Can't turn off my device - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When i unlock my nexus 4 and hold power button nothing happens and when i leave it it just locks again, i don't think it's an hardware problem because my power button works fine in locking and unlocking action...what can i do?

Have you held it for 10+ seconds?

Yes i know that this method could work but what is strange is that the menu with all the options like sound, turn off ecc won't show up if i hold power button and i think that if i turn it off maybe it won't recognise the long press action when i'll try to turn it on

Press and hold the Volume up and Power buttons simultaneously to simulate removing the battery. After your Nexus shuts off, go ahead and power it on normally.

Are you using a custom ROM?

Possibly the SystemUI is bugged, I had this issue with CM nightly around May. Reboot then it'll be fine again, until you trigger the bug.

I am all stock, i only have an unlocked bootloader, i held power for 15 seconds and it rebooted now all is working, thank you guys i was really scared

[Q] Power button not working

Hi,
after unlocking and rooting my Nexus 4 I flashed the franco-kernel. I did these steps with the ToolKit. But now when I start my phone I can press the power button once and it offers me to shut it down. After that there is no reaction when pressing the power button. I tried to reset the Nexus but I still get the same error. Can anyone help? Thanks!
EDIT: My nexus just turned off the screen and I was able to reactive it by pushing the powerbutton. What works all the time is shutting down the phone by long pressing.
From your initial post it sounds like it might be sticking..

I don't think that it's hardware related. It might be a software issue. Sometimes the screen stays on for ever unless I open an app and close it again. It seems the phone doesn't know what to do when the button is pressed.
EDIT: When connected to PC I can use the button only to power off the phone. I can't wake it...weird

[Q] power button

I have Nexus 7 32GB Wifi. I have rooted it last week, but hasn't installed any custom recovery or ROM. The one problem i have noticed after that is , sometimes i have to press power button twice to wake up the tablet, only then my unlock screen comes up. I tried waiting few seconds after pressing power button once, but the screen will not turn on, i had to press power button second time. Any idea?
Thanks

[Q] Nexus 4 died weirdly

ROM: Cyanogenmod
Android OS ver.: 4.4.2
Device: Nexus 4
Apparently, using CleanMaster to clear up RAM and locking my phone at the same time is a bad combination.
My Nexus 4 is now bricked somehow.
I remember my battery is about 60% and above.
My "Hold" button is broken so I used Cyanogenmod's double tap on status bar to lock screen function mostly.
The "Hold" button will work if I pressed the "Sweet" spot.
I tried calling my Nexus 4 and there's a dial tone but my Nexus 4 do not have any indication that there's a call.
No vibration or ringtones.
There isn't any LED light indicating my phone is in critical state.
I believe my Nexus 4 is still "Online" as I still can call it.
Please help! What should I do now? I think I'm the first one to have this problem.

Well, I don't know if i'm pressing the "Sweet" spot but I tried holding for more than 60 seconds. Nothing happens.
I think my phone is having CPU or RAM lock?
Any more ideas to force reboot my device? :crying:

I've tried and held it more than 60 seconds again.
both holding Volume up + Power and Volume down + Power doesn't work.
Thanks for the suggestions though!
I'm still confused.. why did this happened? :l
Oh.!!! After constantly pressing volume up and down with power button and power button alone.
I couldn't tell if my phone had shut down, I tried calling my phone and there was no dial tone!
I tried powering on at the same time and a logo on the screen came up!
My phone is working fine now!
Lesson learned: Do not Clear RAM with Clean Master and lock screen at the same time.
Current Battery Level: 25%
Thank you all!

glad it's working. just to let you know you don't need to clear ram since Android 2.0 eclair. So don't use those apps.

Volume Down and Power button don't seem to work anymore

Something just happened to my phone where the touchscreen actions went a little crazy for a second or two and then the Volume Down and Power button don't seem to work anymore.
The Volume Up button still works though...
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to turn off or reboot the device without using the power button?
Volume down, power and home button. All 3.

Actually, I found in this case holding down Volume Down and Power caused the phone to reboot. I wonder if something got stuck...
It happened to me as well and I found some article which said to hold power +down button for some time and it will reboot

hard restart

How do you do a hard restart on the 6T,tries holding the power button in for 10-15 secs and nothing
Thanks for any help
Should be volume down and power button held in while turning the phone on.
I don't mean recovery ,I mean forcing it to shut down ,on all my other phones it was hold in power button

i thikn u just have to hold it down for much longer. i've noticed that power on takes probably a full second longer of holding the button than any other phone i've ever had.
Can't even get it to switch off ,held it down for about 30 sec and nothing

i read somewhere on here that you may have to press and hold both volume buttons AND power for the phone to do something. i dont know what it was, but it was something. try that. try all the combinations. holding buttons down isn't going to damage your phone.
Ok this definitely does not work on my one +6T
No matter how long I hold the power button in for it does not force the phone to restart .
Could anyone else test this ,or suggest reasons why .I always liked to do a hard reset Evey week or so so close down any apps that have run in the background etc
Thanks

My phone will hard reboot by pressing and holding power and volume up for approximately 10 seconds. Can you not just reboot the normal way through the power menu?
Mine doesn't turn off just by holding the power button. What you're describing though is not a reset of any type. It's a force shutdown, and that's not something you should be doing unless you need to (when the phone is unresponsive, for example). Just do a regular restart, if you feel the need to be refreshing or resetting, as you call it.
power off /restart/screenshot are the 3 options I get when I push the power button..tmo version..

I tested mang0s solution by pressing power and vol up in both recovery and normal mode. It works, recovery will reboot the phone and in normal mode the phone powers off.

Forcing a shutdown has the potential to cause corruption. If you shut down correctly then the OS tells everything to close first, which will avoid that.

I second this. Hold volume up and the power button and the phone turns off after 10 seconds.
