Really bad battery life after upgrading to 4.3 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used to get really good battery life on stock 4.2 rooted (radio - 0.48). But after upgrading to 4.3, stock rooted I'm getting really bad battery life. At night, right now getting 30% reduction in battery where it was like around 5-10%. Interesting thing is, I can't find any unusual usage from battery usage screen.

Online, everyone is posting about battery life improvement, so I tried formatting and flashing factory image. Still no change. Can some one help me identify the issue and resolve it ?
UPDATE: seems like I'm getting better battery life after flashing .48 radio. So issue might be with the radio which came with 4.3

Are you still on your first charge? Battery life should improve on your 2nd + 3rd charge. Also the gauge might be wrong, let the phone die on low battery once to reset the stats.

Battery Geeks use zero brightness, turn everything off, look at a black screen for hours to get those results.
My results are not as bad as yours. They say my reception is bad. the cell tower is in my sight all day. There is only a double glazing between the phone and the tower which is 50 yards away.
I just accepted the fact that the nexus 4's battery life is crap.

Did you updated radio and bootloader also?.
Some people reported problems with old radio/bootloader and updated to 4.3. Also there are some wakelocks around there, my findings here:

No. No improvement after charge cycles. Tried full discharge also. No difference.

I was using same settings for 4.2 -> auto brightness, GPS etc. Reception is also stable. So no point in turning off everything.

Am in new bootloader and radio.
I flashed old radio, 0.48, will update the post after checking.

I feel like I am getting better battery life since updating to 4.3, strange.

What hardware revision are you on?
I had bad battery life but I think that was due to my CPU burning at 50-77°C
Its gone back to LG.
I wondered if it was due to having Hardware r10.. Just a thought

After upgrading to 4.3 OTA, It took me 2 charge cycles to see the improvements. Made sure that the battery was never discharged below 15% and did not keep it in fully charged state for too long. Overall the performance has significantly improved with 4.3.

Upon my first using of 4.3 my battery was draining quite a bit and I was lost as to why. I looked in what was using battery and it showed "Google Services" I saw where others were having weird battery issues so I read around and found out a battery drain is happening with location services using network and wifi to locate you. I turned it off and battery has been significantly better. Settings>location access is where you'll find it. My phone does fine finding me using the gps.

Seems like battery life has improved after flashing .48 radio. So I think issue was with .84 radio which came with 4.3

I have bad battery also, have only had the phone for a week and no unusual drains or wakelocks...

I had the same issue, and solution was the same.
Didn't saw this thread while I was experimenting with it.

[Q] Battery Life after recent software update

Has anyone noticed any significant decrease in battery life after applying the recent update issued by Verizon a couple of days ago? My Fascinates battery life was actually impressing me tremendously before the update, and it seems to have taken quite a big hit since the update. Just wondering if my case is isolated, or if others are seeing the same thing.
How many hours are you getting? My battery life always lasted around 13-15 hours even before the update which is still pretty short imo. I wonder if I have a defective battery. I turn everything off and brightness to the lowest but it's always around 13/14 hours when my phone dies completely.
My battery life has definitely takin a hit...

There's an UNCONFIRMED rumor floating around over on Android Central that Verizon and Samsung have pulled the update due to problems. Again, this is unconfirmed, and just a rumor, and makes NO mention to the reasons why. Perhaps the battery life is a more wide spread issue.

Well, isnt that special.
Took me forever to apply it manually and now it might be borked, great
I didn't really have a problem with the battery life after this update, but I did notice a signifigant loss of speed when going to websites or watching Youtube.
I installed the update by reverting to stock and updating, and then re-rooted and re-applied the lag fix, and of course re-removed bloatware. I can report that I have noticed no difference at all on data transfer performance, and also no battery life issues. In fact, when I got home from work today, I looked at my battery gauge, and it was still at 87%. That's after almost 12 hours of mostly standby time, with gmail, corporate email, and weather services updating regularly. That's actually the best battery life I've seen out of this thing yet. If your battery is draining faster than that, then you must have some kind of process or background service that's not letting the CPU sleep, which will drain your battery fairly quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if the culprit is one of the bloatware apps that I disabled.
On a side note, I still seem to have an issue where the data connection intermittently cuts out. I don't lose the 3G icon, and have plenty of signal, but it's like the connection just times out, and a few seconds later resumes again. I was hoping the radio update in DI01 would address this, but no dice. I'm actually suspicious that it's an issue in the OS itself, as I've seen similar behavior over WiFi, which is a completely separate radio and network interface. I hope it's just a software bug, not a hardware defect. If it persists after the Froyo upgrade, I plan on doing a warranty claim.

You should be able to redo the original root procedure as documented here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=779238
Note that some have reported that they had to do the root procedure twice after installing DI01 to get root access back, though it worked the first time for me.

Yeah I have done it probably 7 times to no avail.... :/
It freezes my phone i believe after it sents the second restart command. it comes up with device not found, even after it says it was successful....
I also tried the original version of this program (i believe), but it is the one I used to root it the first time.
I bought the phone on the 25th and got the update within minutes of leaving the store. I got great battery life the first day but it's been more standard fair so far getting 13-14 hours with moderate usage.
I unplugged my phone about 12 hours ago. I have used it all day for email, text and phone calls and I am right now at 64%. I am getting great battery life with this phone, loads better than my droid 1 and 2.
Reinstall the Samsung drivers. I had to do that and then root was achieved again. I'm an employee of Vzw and haven't heard any rumors of the update being borked. I'll keep y'all posted!

battery life

Just thought I'd give a quick review of Cyanogen Mod 7 battery life and performance.
Standby battery drain of about 1.5%/hr with 3G, backround data on, auto-sync on, wifi on, GPS on.
I've never obtained such great battery life on any stock rom or stock-modified rom (I've tried a few different ones over the last year or so)
The performance is also much better than any of the stock-based roms (no lags).
No need to create new topic for that information.
fan/zombie boys everywhere
aple has ones so why not android ;]
Which nightly are you using? Which kernel?
After a night my Galaxy S is always dead. I solved the problem disabling 3g connection and sync. Stock rom 2.3.3 and semaphore kernel.

Sorry to say but useless thread. Just keep the damn charger always near you and battery life wont matter.
Btw did cyanogen pay you for posting this?or........
haha I had the same thought
I used to always hear about CM7 having god-awful battery life. I don't know if people were lying or if they fixed some major bugs, but I certainly have no complaints about my phone's battery life (running CM7, of course). I get through way more than a day.

That's my current battery stats. Haven't used the phone too much the last little while, but getting over 24 hours is not uncommon—I actually very rarely see my phone last for under 24 hours, and that's usually because of 5+ hours of screen on time. For that battery, I'd say about 75 texts, 30 minutes of phone calls, and about 30-60 minutes of web browsing. Fairly light use, but nevertheless, the battery life on CM7 is nothing to complain about.
EDIT: Looks like something was causing a wakelock the last ~6-8 hours while I was asleep, causing my phone not to deep sleep. If that hadn't of happened, it would still have quite a bit more battery (when I went to bed it was 44%, so it shouldn't have dropped to 27%—it should have dropped to ~40%). This just proves my point even more: battery life on CM7 is not bad at all.
seriusly?
do you see any battery change in that period compared to one earlier ))
when it was awake on your funny screenshot it was discharging with the same when the phone was not awake acordding to that stats so no impact registered
Thanks to share that information...

This sounds fantastic, Cm7.1 is my next choice, on XXJVT battery life is only 12h
thats using juicedefender to activate the data connection when screen turns on, emails still push to phone straight away with gmail so it is fine for me.
WIFI seems to drain the battery a bit quicker but not enough for me to bother flashing different kernels
I saw someone who did 2 WEEKS without charging. Normal using with black wallpaper on 2g network.
seems to be even better on ics... the best i had was ~2% per 8 hours...
3G + WiFi + email max 1 day

Getting some great battery life on evervolv's ICS rom. Anyone else getting similar performance?

That's good. Might be a glitch though if your battery is not calibrated. I had an issue when my N1 was showing over 20% and then shut off. When I turned it back on, it showed 0% and turned itself off. Try to discharge it all the way and see it if will shut off before it hits 0%. I would do it as a precautionary measure just to make sure that your phone doesn't die unexpectedly when you need it most.
nice battery life mate

But my mobile shuts down when battery at 15 %.

what are you guys using to calibrate for your battery? Mine used to turn off around 20-25% remaining but after I reset the battery stats its been more accurate. I get nowhere near the same amount of battery life that the OP has but I also am in a bad reception area.
I'm on the MeDroid HWA Mod and I cannot believe thatmy battery lasts for about two days now.
Do you really recalibrate or do you use the function out of your recovery, which function is busted meanwhile?!

Would like to find out about this battery calibration as well. Battery life on my N1 hasn't aged well, and I wonder if the batt's showin its age or something.
Mine isn't that good
I'm on latest MedroidMod but my battery drops fast with screen on and wifi but data off. It's like 20% each 25mins. But ICS is so sweet and cool that I don't wanna go back to the buttersmooth GB.
P/s: Which home launcher are you using/do you recommend to run on ICS?
My battery life seems to have improved slightly as well. I guess the complete redesign Google did, has done some good
wow its amazing
I'm running medroidmod remix and I'm happy when I make the day with one charge.
When my screen is on you can almost see my battery discharge.
With texice i had a huge drain (10% per hour), with medroid it was a little bit better but not nearly as good as with cm7.2RC1 now.
I've also finally updated radio to 5.08 yet.

[Q] update: ABYSMAL BATTERY LIFE - internal storage faulty?

So my phone sometime last for 3 days, normal usage, sometimes it lasts barely a day. That's with same apps, same usage, same patterns.
I charge my phone before going to bed. If I wake up with it still on 100% I know I'm in for a 3 day+ cycle, but sometimes for no apparent reason, I wake up with 75-80%.
Better Battery stats shows the phone was asleep 99% of the time. I'm going crazy over this love/hate relationship with my phone.
That's android. Sometimes apps go rouge.
Posting from my LG G2 while driving an Evo IX.
Under alarms section I see com.android.phone has hundreds, even thousands, depending on uptime, wakeups. What could this mean? My carrier has FD so I have it enabled, is this connected?
I've now started having abysmal battery life. I've flashed kk kdz and started from scratch yesterday. Greenify all apps I can think of, frozen all bloat. Google now is not running, location services off, Google backup turned off, I barely used the phone. I've had great battery life on kk before, it's abysmal the last week. No apparent wakelocks, no rogue apps. I'm literally stumped as to what is happening.

Could be a built hardware issue. I've heard and seen bad battery reports.
Mine isn't as great as everybody elses, but lately I've been running without battery save on full brightness using chrome all day and changing things since root. So that's to be expected.

I'm thinking it's hardware as well. I'm gonna do another charge cycle and see if anything changes. If not, I'm factory reseting again but with no apps installed. If that fails as well, I'm gonna go claim warranty...which will leave me without a phone for a week, at least.
My drain hunting is still going on. What I have found out is the phone works fine when it's factory reseted. After installing apps, everything is still fine. The problem starts happening after my memory starts getting filled. I can't pin-point if it's pictures, videos, music..but I' sure the files themselves are good. Because they are my personal files, not downloaded from shady places.
Pretty much after some time, the drain appears again.
Is there a way to check the internal storage for errors and to possibly fix them?
i reverted back to 4.2.2. KK was draining my battery for the same activity about 2x the speed. it wasn't even a "i think" it's draining more.. it's definitely. revert back to 4.2.2 if batter life is important to you.
i tried both XDAxebb's and micromods's stock and stock debloated.

Battery Life Issue (Is this normal battery life)

I've been noticing my battery has been draining a lot lately, and the majority is going to Android System. I did a search and found another post about this with no answers. I'm not getting much more than 12 hours on a daily basis, and I hardly use my phone. I'm including a screen shot of the battery usage. Is this a normal usage amount? I remember this phone being better on battery than this.
What are you guys getting for typical usage?
Anyone have any suggestions?

as of yesterday, I'm seeing the same problem. Didn't have short battery life before that but several apps updated yesterday morning and now I have something like 50% on Android System and an unusually high "Stay Awake" - we're talking something like 10 hours when I wasn't using the phone for anything in particular - certainly not 10 hours worth!
So, I'm wondering how we tell what is keeping a phone awake?
usually we need more info such as what rom your using and when it started to happen..
second post might be one of the apps thats causing it so id backtrack them n see if u can find the culprit

I had big time battery issues when I was running NI2, and similar to what you were seeing Android System and Kernel, my battery would be nearly drained after about 10 to 12 hours. I rolled back to NE9 and my battery is back to being great I am usually at about 60% after about 10 hours. For what it's worth apps and programs were the same between both builds. Not sure this is much help just figured I'd share my experiences and what worked for me.

This was the solution I feared. I'm having massive battery drain on NI2 as well. Unfortunately, won't we lose "HD Voice" or VOLTE if we roll back to NE9? Not a deal breaker I guess.
It's really too bad Samsung/Verizon broke the phone with an update. This is seemingly pretty common now. Hope another small update gets released soon. I'm on international travel starting Friday and having a phone dead by 3pm doesn't sit very well with me.

Yes, you will lose HD Voice / VOLTE unfortunately. That was a sacrifice I had to take I couldn't deal with my phone being dead by 5:00pm.
agreed. Yesterday was a complete joke. By 2pm with light use, I was down to 21%. Dead by 3:30.
I hate that I have to flash my phone back to a prior version because Verizon/Samsung broke it.

agreed. Yesterday was a complete joke. By 2pm with light use, I was down to 21%. Dead by 3:30.
I hate that I have to flash my phone back to a prior version because Verizon/Samsung broke it.

Wake lock detector and greenify are your friends...
My about phone.
so, after posting the second post in this thread I'm happy to post that my battery consumption returned to normal by the next day. I don't know what was going on but I'm still on NI2 and regular battery consumption - what I've been used to seeing on the phone all along.
that said, it's great to know about some of the apps that are available for better tracking/info about wake-locks and battery use.
