Music is really quiet - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got this phone a couple of days ago, moved from the HTC One S with beats audio. I've noticed that top volume (past safe level) on this is equal to around 9/15 on the HTC. Does anybody know any apps that could increase the maximum volume, as I don't want to root quite yet.

Poweramp is good, and has a louder volume than the stock samsung player.

or flash Perseus Kernel..in Stweak you can boost spkr volume ...

You didn't quite get the "not rooting, not unlocking bootloader (or whatever the Samsung equivalent is, I've noticed no HBOOT)" part, did you?
As long as there's a factory image going around for this that puts the phone completely back to stock for warranty purposes, then I'll root now. With my record with phones, this will go wrong the day after I root, without doing anything else to it.

Try jetAudio, you can configure the pre-amp in the equaliser settings, plus the EQ is better than poweramp from my own experience.

Open Poweramp
Go to equalizer (icon by the side of library)
Set pre amp to the max
Go to "Tone/Vol"
I like to put Stero X at max too
Disable "Mono" if enabled
Change Equalizer settings if you want

I did this with mine and the sound is great quality and high!! Even being a low quality 192kbps mp3

There's also an app called Bass Booster, which can increase the volume as well.
"This Story Ends Where It Began" - Octavarium (Dream Theater)

Stereo X absolutely raped the bass on my headphones (BOSE MIE2) and made every song sound disgusting, from songs with little bass to songs with lots of bass. Both songs are awesome by the way. Well, now that I've bothered to root (and starting to regret it now that I've heard Triangle Away is useless at the moment) I might as well add beats audio to the phone.

I would get V4A tbh, has tons of customisation and when you get something that suits you its great. Not to mention you can boost the volume with it. FauxSound can also apply gain, I use that too.

Well... I didn't expect such a small device to carry that kind of audio capacilities. HTC seems to know what they're doing when it comes to producing sound. But they forgot one thing; EQ. The Hero doesn't have the dynamic range to fullfill my needs. No, I am not an audiophile since I can live with equalizers in absurdum. I just want some settings for the sound though.
Can anyone check if there's some API to speak to the sound`device of the Hero?
AFAIK Android does not support equalizers *yet*. I heard that this feature might however be coming in donut ...
I LOVE the hiss which the Hero generates whenever playing audio. I'm glad HTC didn't bother sorting that out. Very enjoyable.

Well, they did for me, because there's no hiss when playing audio either via Bluetooth or wired headset.
Perhaps another item to add to the list of things that HTC's manufacturing can't get right consistently then.

No hiss.
No hiss and no stuttering here as well. Only using wma and mp3 though.
No hiss and no stuttering, used to have some stuttering with my diamond but with my hero I have abolutly no problems. Also the quality of sound produced by the phone itself while making a call is clearer then any other phone I had before.

Yeah I found that too and was surprised after reading some people say it was terrible sound during calls. The calls on my Magic were pretty bad but I can deffo notice a major improvement on the Hero.
No hisses here either. Just deep bass, and great sound overall!
The hiss, mentioned earlier, could come from the file, right?
HTC have a very useful equalizer on the HD, and it would be nice to have one for Android as well.

It's a signal to noise thing, if you've got music turned up loud you won't hear it. It's only noticeable when listening to stuff at half volume or below (more noticeable the quieter it goes).
True. Also have hiss and stutters, also the stuttering seem to be more or less inconsistent. Unlike the touch diamond, i could always trust on stutter at least every 5 minutes with that phone.
Strange how everyone experiences the sound quality different. I think it is poor, very poor. Too much mid levels makes it sound like im listening inside a tin can. need an EQ to fix that.
your ears gotta be made of steel if you are listening to musin on higher then half the volume range Mine hurts after the second lowest step on the Hero...
Yeah, it's really loud, too loud really. I wish the volume increments were smaller too, sometimes (at night, in bed for example) the lowest volume is too loud. I seem to notice compression artifacts on podcasts more too, not sure why that would be.
I would also be taking into consideration the headphones you are using aswell as the quality of the audio file when speaking in regards to the volum and overal quality.
Personaly i find the sound to be as good as my ipod nana, where as im sure my HTC magic was below par

Personally, I don't have a big issue with the EQ and not being able to control it and the Hiss doesn't mean the end of the world, it's just a bit annoying.

Have added his twitter feed in the 1st post
Nice. Hope it's crispier with loudness. Some apps can easily boost the volume while audio is distorted badly.
I believe SuperCurio anyway.
This should have been Samsung's job anyway. Shame on you Samsung!
Means i will have to turn my sound down .
jje
doubt higher volume levels will really improve the sound quality
personally i feel the s2 has enough volume headroom
its just the timbre is screwed up.sound needs more quality and cpu interference noise needs to be minimalised.(not audible wid cheap earphones but gets really irritating with my nuforce ne6 and friends tf10).
but then again guess something is better than no improvement at all.volume increase it is
a hearty thanx to supercurio and thanx to op for the heads-up
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
donations will be going to supercurio for this.
I hope this would solve the low volume on AOSP based roms
awesome!!!
Personally speaking my phone is loud enough as it is and ive no complaints but i understand some people might have some issues with their phones.
very interesting
Damn, you got to this one quick! I was just about to write up a thread for it. Well done
To those wondering, Supercurio has already stated that there's no distortion, unlike a lot of other so-called fixes (that really just rely on dodgy EQ-hacks). On average, you should see a 6dB+ volume increase.
Personally, I'm extremely excited to see how this stacks up against this, and also if they're related in how they achieve the volume increase (I know that the current fix uses the alsa_amixer file in /system/bin, but apparently it's not a very elegant solution, as it needs a service to constantly run in the background, and needs to push the command every ~300ms to maintain the boost).

I'm using that as its the only thing that works for me right now. It is pretty shabby, but afaik its the best for now.
It isn't very elegant, and the sound dips every time you change it (while its applied) and THEN the sound goes up, thus scaring you to death.

Why is your pre amp volume extremely low, i bet you can hardly hear anything?
The best thing to do is start with bass & treble pre set and instead of highering the bass and treble, lower the mid so bass and treble dont go past 0, and turn pre amp up if not loud enough, it helps cut out the noise from the chip. If you can try to keep limit off and adjust till you are without distortion too.

Remember guys, each brand of headphones has its own eq curve, so one setting isn't going to please everybody. A good idea would be to state your music background (audiophile/general listener), your music taste and what set of iem's / headphones you're using.

[MOD] Increase speaker volume :)

pretty simple mod, I hate how the ringtone and playback volume are not loud enough, so I changed it
MUST HAVE ROOT.
1.Navigate to /system/etc
2.look for mixer_gain.xml, open it up with some type of editors
3. change the value to 26 and 36 for playback speaker (max before running into too much distortion)
4. do the same for ringtone speaker, but I put 37, just a level higher than playback.
5.save the editor (root explorer will make a back up for you)
6.make sure the file correction are RW-R-R-- (I dont think it would changes but it doesnt hurt to check)
7. reboot
8. give me a thanks

you can experiment around with the value, but I wouldn't go above 37. also if anyone know the name to change for the in-call headset let me know
Pretty sure you have to be rooted for this mod. So this means that speaker and in ear speaker volume is again not loud enough... I had to increase it on every Samsung phone I have ever owned, starting with i8910 running on Symbian. Samsung please, wake up and increase the volume of the phone calls, this is ridiculous. It is a phone in a first place. To the Original poster, on my Note 4 I think I increased the "in ear" volume. I don't have Note 5 so I don't know what they call it now.

I believe so....Gain-media-headset(?) change the value from 32 to 36....I dont know I use a Chord Hugo for my portable DAC :/
test it out and let me know :/ it wont screw up your phone, but dont increase too much or you might get distortion.

Yeah, in this thread they doing the same for the S6

Seems it even causes the DAC to cut out if the level is too high. I'll mess around with it once I get my device rooted (Come on SM-N9200 root kernels!)
