Nook App does not work in any rom - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to get the nook reader app from B&N to work on any rooted mod? I need it in order to read the book I had previously purchased and I don't want to dual boot. I just want the app to work. I keep getting an error say "SD Card Not Detected. The NOOK application needs an sdcard to function properly. Please verify that an sdcard is installed and mounted" even when I have an sdcard installed. Thanks in advance for any insight to this problem.

You can either use a SD card, or edit /system/etc/vold.fstab to use the second partition in the Nook internal memory as a SD card. To do the later, edit the file (e.g. using Root Browser, or doing sdb remount && sdb shell vi /system/etc/vold.fstab), then change sdcard0 to sdcard1, and sdcard1 to sdcard0, save the file, and reboot your Nook to get the second internal partition mounted as if it was the SD card.
I hope this helps

The error message makes it sound like you do not have your SD formatted properly. If it is not, then the app would not read it properly. Try formatting it in your PC using SDFormatter which you can get free on the web.
However, you are confusing me. That error message comes from the Android version of the nook app, not the stock version. Are you running something besides stock? If you are running something else, try CM7. It has a setting to allow the apps to use internal memory for those users that do not have a working SD.

I have tried using several different mods in CM7 even though I would prefer CM10. I want to be able to use the nook app without inserting a sd card if at all possible. I am a teacher and I am trying to create a class set of rooted NOOK so I can have better control over the using app from Google Play but they have books they need to access using the NOOK app.

No. But if you install CM7, there is a setting for it.
Edit: if you want to use apps without an SD, CM7 is your best bet. While you can hack CM10.1 to do the same thing, it is flacky. CM removed the setting in CM10.1 just because of that.
The setting is in cyanogenmod settings, something about allowing apps to use internal memory.

It may be considered as flaky, but at least for me editing vold.fstab has been working fine consistently from CM9 onwards. And it works fine for me not just with CM, but also with mateorod's AOSP and ParanoidAndroid builds. Something I try to do every 2-3 months is to run FSTrim to balance the wear-leveling of the EMMC — not sure whether it really helps making things a bit snappier or it's just placebo effect

kicking around ideas here, how hard would it be to backup and restore a stock nook color to sd, and a cm10 to internal, then change the default boot to internal ??
sorry if this has been covered, i think i remember seeing a piece here and there about it. been searching and reading and trying to be independant.
thanks so much for the time,

No, internal is not much, if at all, quicker than an SD install if you are using a SanDisk class 4 card.
You cannot backup and restore stock to an SD install. But you can now install the stock ROM fresh on an SD. Look at my tips thread and item B11. Then you can install CM10 to emmc.
And you can change the default boot to internal, but you would have to put fattire's Cyanoboot u-boot loader on the stock SD install and change some settings in /rom. See his thread in the dev forum to see how to change the default. And to install his u-boot loader just copy it to the SD while the SD is in your PC. You may have to put his new MLO file there too.

wouldn't changing the default boot device from SD remove the safety valve of always being able to get out of a potential "brick" situation by using SD boot?

No. You can always manually override the default selection by using the boot menu. And if your card was not using Cyanoboot, it would ignore the default anyway.

[Q] Accessing media on internal storage

I hacked a pair of NC's for my kids for Christmas, running Mirage CM7 (seemed the most stable, but I could be wrong). I was planning on waiting a bit on the micro SD's and just running off of the 1GB internal memory, but I can't access the songs I put there. Every time I try to pull up the music player or MX player or gallery, it tells me "No SD card".
Well, no duh...
My question is, is there a setting that will allow me to access the internal storage until I'm able to get a couple SD's? Or should I upgrade to CM10? Also, the reboot SD for the Nook Tablet has a neat little repartitioning affect, got me another 6 or 7GB when I used it to install CM10 there---does the NC have a similar repartitioning tool?
Thanks in advance

Yes there is an option to use internal memory. I don't remember the exact menu since I have not used CM7 in a while. But go to settings, cyanogenmod settings, applications, and choose use internal memory. Or something like that. It swaps emmc and sdcard so that apps think internal media is sdcard.

Also, does CM10 on the NC not have to worry about that?

Yes, unless you want to keep it that way. Your new card will show as emmc then.
CM10 has not implemented that yet. And it would have the same problem. Some apps would not run without an SD present.

CM10 Internal EMMC

Is it possible to install CM10 on the internal EMMX of Nook HD. I know that it is possible to bypass the Nook HD bootloader to prevent it from checking if all the files match. I want to know how to do that with bootloader.
Thanks

It is possible. Hack away. Just don't bug the rest of us always asking for how to do it when most of us don't have a clue. Very few do. It takes some very talented people to figure it out. Do you understand how to read, modify and write code? That is what it is going to take.

I do understand how to code. But I don't understand how these systems are set up.
Can anybody explain exactly what "locking" the bootloader means? Is the boot code in the Nook's OMAP ROM designed to check for a cryptographic signature in images it loads from EMMC storage? Even though it doesn't make any such check for images loaded from the SD card? (The OMAP Wiki doesn't seem to mention anything about checking signatures.)
I tried overwriting the first 8 MB of /dev/block/mmcblk0 on my HD with the partition table and VFAT boot partition from a CWM Recovery SD card. It would not boot, even though the the HD boots perfectly well off the card.

You are right about the bootloader checking crypto codes on emmc. And it does on SD too. Verygreen has just found a loophole to defeat the check. That is your challenge, find a loophole to defeat the lock on emmc. Study verygreen's code and you may get a clue.

I assume you mean use emmc (internal memory media storage) as "sdcard". Usually with CM10 you can add a simple file to swap emmc and the real sdcard. But because of the way emmc is mounted on this device, that does not work. Why do you want it? There is a work around if you really need it.

If you just want to use it as media storage, it is available as "emmc" in your file manager. You can copy files there. And you can sometimes set your applications to use "emmc" instead of "sdcard". Is that what you want to know?

What file manager are you using? The one that comes with CM10? If so go to settings in the lower right and click on it. Then general, then access mode and select root. Then you can go to sdcard0, which is internal storage. That file manager is very bad. I recommend you get root browser lite in play store.

Black screen of death

I used ManualNooter for my nook. As I recently installed a bunch of apps and ebooks, I thought I should back up my device. I went to Rom Manager for back up which then brought me to CWM when it was done to reboot. When I reboot it was stuck in boot loop. I turned the nook, then back on and whenever i reboot i get black screen of death. I can boot to CWM by holding all three buttons down. I tried wiping data, factory reset, reinstalling nooter zip, yet every time I reboot, I get black screen of death. Can someone help me figure out how to fix this? Thx.

My computer no longer recognizes the Nook (I have an HP laptop running Windows 8). Prior to the black screen, the computer did detect the nook when plugged in with the USB cable. How can I now copy the zip file to flash through CWM recovery? I have version 3.2.0.1 installed? I don't understand why trying to make a back-up file through the ROM manager would cause such failure? Thanks for your help.
EDIT: Should I now be trying the verygreen method via SD card? Apologies for the panic.

Make a bootable CWM card as described in my item A10. Then copy the 1.4.3 rom zip downloaded from A15 to the card. Put the card in the Nook, boot to CWM and flash the ROM zip.
Sometimes files get corrupted when writing them to the Nook. Obviously that is what happened with ROM Manager.

What size SD card do I need? I tried copying the 1.4.3 rom zip (unzipped, used 7 zip to extract the other files) onto a 8 GB sandisc and a 16GB and both tell me the card does not have enough space. I've used Win32diskimager-v.07 (the link from manual nooter no longer works), I copied the CWM-5.5.04 image to the SD card. I had no trouble copying manual nooter onto the 8gb sandisc. I used a SD formatter program to format and wipe the disk before using it for this. Thanks.

I guess I should modify my instructions. The 1.4.3 zip is so large that you need to use the 6.0.1.2 version of the bootable CWM SD. It has a little more room for the zip. It does not matter which size card you start out with.

I'm back in business! It worked - whew! I had trouble with the 1.4.3 zip, so I used DizzyDen's 1.4.1. I was stuck in boot loop the first time I rebooted, then used the 5-6-7 partition fix zip, reinstalled the 1.4.1 zip and it worked like a charm. I also used the newer version of CWM you advised which was smaller in size, it's all on the 16gb SD card with no issue.
One last question, now that the stock rom is in order, am I safe to flash CM10? I'd prefer not to use manualnooter again as you said in a previous post, CM10 is leaps and bounds above nooter. If you think it's okay to flash, do I have to do the 8 count reset to fully wipe?
Many, many thanks for your clear, detailed instruction and patience!

When I was last working on this, I had my external hard drive plugged into the computer via the usb port. I was backing up the files that were on my micro sd card, I had a 16gb in my droid bionic, I swapped it with the 8 gb I had in the nook when I couldn't get the older version of CWM on the card. Now when I plug in my external hard drive, all I see are the win32 imaging files on it. I take it, this process formats over everything plugged into a usb port? I've lost all my kids photos and videos, I can cry I'm so mad at myself for letting this happen. I've tried the two laptops we have and I get the same list of files in the folders. I guess this is one of those mistakes you only make once.
Oh no! Yes, burning a card writes over everything. There are some utilities that may let you rescue your old files, but maybe not. I would set it aside till you find out. I think the free MiniTool Partition Wizard has some paid companion products that may help.
Edit: just reread your post. It does not write over everything plugged into the USB. You just made a mistake when you burned once and selected the external drive letter. The same solution applies. Find a disk partition repair utility.

Am I able to copy files to the SD card while it's running CM10? I wanted to copy some pdfs and ebub books to read and when I try to copy to the SD card it says the Nook is not responding or disconnected. I don't think this is a driver issue as I can see the Nook on my computer and can see the files stored either on internal storage or SD. When I'm in CM10 and go to file manager, I can only see what is on the SD card, I can't access any of my files that were on EMMC. That's fine, I have copies of my ebooks saved on my laptop, I just can't figure out how to read them now. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

You need to be a little more specific.
There are two methods to connect to your PC with CM10 using the USB cable, MTP and USB mass storage. They are selectable in settings. Go to settings, storage, menu and USB computer connection. MTP is default and shows the Nook as just devices in Windows Explorer with no drive letters. If you choose USB mass storage, they show as drive letters in Windows explorer. But they do not contain anything until you activate them by touching a button on your Nook. And the button does not show if Android degugging is activated in settings.
So that is why I say you need to be more specific.
You say you can't copy to the SD. What are you seeing on your PC, drive letters or just labels that say internal SD and sdcard? And describe a little more the errors.
The reason you can't see emmc with the file manager that comes with CM10 is by default it is in safe mode. You have to change a setting to get it in root mode. Either get a different file manager like the free Root Browser Lite or change the setting in the CM10 file manager. To change the setting, press menu while it is open and you will see three dots in the lower right. Touch that. Go to settings, general settings and access mode and change it from safe to root. Then you will be able to see emmc.

I think my quick reply didn't post. Anyway, thanks, again, for your help. When I went to transfer files from my external hard drive to the Nook, I was using the wrong lap top and then realized I had to update usb drivers which helped. I then followed your other steps to change settings, including safe to root, and I can now see all my files.
Can you recommend a file manager? The default one is a bit cumbersome.
Thanks again for everything.

If you want a free one, I recommend Root Browser Lite. For paid, I like Root Explorer.

I'd like to update to the May 4 nightly and new gapps, should I run the 567 partition zip again before flashing? If so, should I wipe cache and dalvik as well? Are you still using ADW launcher? I'm using Nova. Thanks.

The 5/4 nightly is CM10.1. The version you were running earlier was CM10. You should be able to just flash the 5/4 nightly with only wiping the dalvik-cache. No other wiping or partition zips. Since CM10.1 requires a newer gapps (20130301), you should flash that too.
Yes, I still use ADW, but only because I am used to it and do not want to try something new.

Is there any difference in performance running CM10.1 off emmc vs SD card which I'm presently doing with the April 7 nightly? I have some vague idea that I read a while back once you put CM10 on emmc you could no longer return to stock?
If I stay on SD card is there any harm in trying (I think the name is Dean) method to adjust internal partition for more room for apps? I've run out of room on SD card? Or is using Titanium to move files a safer alternative?
My kids are now using the Nook, I won an ASUS tablet from livinginkaos over at the Droidrzr forum. He had a give-away while fundraising for a root exploit bounty for JellyBean which Dan Rosenberg created. Method works using Linux Ubuntu, that forum is awesome. I was singing your praises to them. Android forums have the greatest support! Thx.

Process just to get root? Can 10.1 be flashed and install apps to internal storage?

I have discovered an apparent reason for sporadic lag issues is the random library syncing. I want to freeze the app with Titanium.
What is the process just to get permanent root so I can use Titanium? I have the image card I used to install the Extras.zip to allow unknown sources. Can I use that for the process?
Update: After reading more, it is maybe too easy when rooted with 2.1 stock to alter the system and cause a stock reset. I wonder if something as simple as using Titanium to freeze the Library and other apps is enough to cause this? Perhaps just installing Titanium alone could as well....
Perhaps another option would be to start from scratch and install 10.1. Is there a way to install 10.1 and still let apps install to the internal storage?
The answer to the rooting question I think you figured out. It is possible to root, then make some changes while rooted, then disable root when finished. Then there is not a danger of inadvertently resetting later.
But I think that TB needs root to be able to freeze apps. Actually some system apps can be disabled in settings/applications without being rooted. It is the same as freezing in TB. And just freezing an app does not cause a reset.
If you want to install CM10.1 so that you use internal storage to store installed apps, use the Hybrid SD. You do not say whether you have an HD or HD+. There are different threads for each.

HD+. I would like to use 10.1 as my installed internal OS, but keep app storage internal. Prefer using the sd for media only. Easy to use different cards then.

Then follow this procedure I just wrote for another user. It will install CM10.1 on internal memory and you can use an ordinary SD to store your media files.

Excellent! I was looking for a sure fire way to have a custom recovery & flash roms ala my phones or other tablets. Thanks!
Ok, so I didn't realize this was just an HD+ only method. I tried flashing the native EMMC & it failed on the assertion that it was Ovation (I guess code name for the HD+? New to the nooks).
Is there a pure overwrite stock with CM10 for HD? I've made a stock back up, familiar with CWM/TWRP, but now I want to flash CM for HD!
