[Q] lock my nexus into landscape - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just picked up a 2012 Nexus for $150. When I first got it, I believe I was able to go into landscape mode and lock it down - so no matter how i spun the device, it would remain in landscape. I can't seem to lock it down anymore; it will rotate but not stay locked. I upgraded OS the other day to 4.3 - only have had the device about 2 weeks. I swear it was working before. One thing I know has changed is my notification shade no longer shows the rotation icon; it did before. However, I seem to recall I had to do something special to lock it down to remain in landscape. Getting old....can't remember a thing anymore.
I really don't want to use an app just to do something so simple. What gives???

Nexus 7 (2012) updated to 4.3 here — Auto Rotate toggle present and functional in the settings shade so it should be there and you should be able to lock rotation in landscape/portrait. Unless any brighter suggestions present themselves, have you considered a Factory Reset?

I was going to root my Nexus anyway so maybe I'll just go ahead and do the the reset that way. Just a question though ....
When you say 'settings' shade did you mean 'notifications' shade?
I can enable rotation via checking the box in Settings->Accessibilty.....but I lost the rotate option in the 'notification' shade.
Thanks

I'm not sure what the proper nomenclature is but the Notification Shade is pulled down from the left-ward half of the top screen edge and the Settings Shade is pulled down from the right-ward half where the Wifi strength, battery level and time live.

The 'notifications' shade is what pops up, as you say on the upper left, whenever something happens. Like on my phone (S2) - I'll swipe down on that shade I can do all sorts of things - turn off volume, wifi etc - now maybe that is because I am running a custom ROM. In any event....I did the factory reset and have the same issue. The Setting->Accessibility allows rotation of screen from portrait to landscape but my 'notification' shade is blank on top - no icons at all.
Question - when you want to lock in landscape - what do you do? Do you do it through the pull down 'notification' shade and the icon that you see on the top or do you - do it through the 'settings' menu?
By the way - are you running 4.3? I am - I swear I had it locked down before but maybe I am dreaming.....thanks for help. Peter

Sorry - I see you already said you were on 4.3!!
But it would be helpful to know how you 'lock' landscape - that way I know for sure - if I am missing some icon or not.

I think you have your answer. I'm running factory pure 4.3 — all the
settings shortcuts and toggles are in a separate right shade (Brightness, Volume, Wifi, Auto Rotate, etc.). Perhaps you should revert to a less custom ROM (or one that has quick Auto Rotate access) if you want that feature.

No - I guess I wasn't clear.....the custom ROM was just a reference to my phone. I too am running pure google. I got the device about 10 days ago and then I got the notice to upgrade to 4.3 - I went ahead and that is when I lost the ability to lock my screen into landscape. I have since - based on your advice - done a factory reset - which was logical and not an issue - but still nothing. No way to lock my screen.
You have been very patient but can you tell me - when you 'lock' your display into landscape, do you do it by touching an icon - present on your 'notification' shade or do you go through the 'setting' menu and check a box or something? It would really help - I normally blame myself for stuff - but I just don't see how I can lock my screen using my 'pure 4.3' experience.
Thanks

I lock my rotation with a button (technically a toggle) called AUTO ROTATE in my settings shade which you seem to have lost — it was there in 4.2 and unchanged in 4.3. Since you've gone this far, and want to root anyway, you might want to flash a fresh factory image of 4.3.

Thanks for your help. At this point - I don't want to root it because - should I need to return it - don't want to have to worry about it.
I don't have a shade at all for my settings. Just the notification shade which remains empty. I can allow rotation by 'checking the box' after navigating through the Settings icon to Accessibility but nothing appears that specifies the ability to 'lock' the screen.
Guess I'll just wait to see if someone else has a similar issue - I suppose I can download an app but I hate adding junk that I should not need. Really appreciate your help....patience is a virtue

You're welcome, I had time to kill
As a native workaround, you could give yourself a Settings widget and set it to be a shortcut to Accessibility.

Lockscreen rotate help.

Hi guys, I was just wondering if there was a way to make the lockscreen stop auto-rotating? I know this is a feature in most ROMs, its just it feels real weird when I open my Portenzo case and the lock screen is off. I still would like the launcher to rotate, just not the lock screen.
I'm running ParanoidAndroid 1.98
Thanks:laugh:
Of course there is! Just swipe down from the top of the screen to bring up the notification tab. Then up the top of that you click the icon to the left of the settings button - its is an icon that looks like a device with two rotating arrows either side of it. This will toggle the lock on and off.

Heh, that disables rotation for everything. I'm looking for something that disables rotation for JUST the lock screen.
Weird, my lock screen has always been portrait-only on my N7, even though I have rotation turned on generally. On my Transformer TF101 on ICS, it rotates and drives me nuts.

I've tried those settings... everything works fine, just the lock screen does not rotate.
Ultimate Rotation Control had an update (mine was yesterday) which allows for Lock Screen rotation. If you have the app installed, just update it and it will work.
Funny, it just updated. Works.
does ultimate rotation control still cause lag on the tablet? does it take the home screen a while to refresh when you rotate the tablet? i tried it a few weeks ago but used to find when i rotated the homescreen it would take a second or two for it to redraw and prior to that it would cause video to stutter when playing

My lockscreen started auto-rotating when i first flashed the BAMF ROM. I have moved on to ParanoidAndroid ROM but the rotate feature stayed
Running PA 1.98 in tablet small mode with apex and it rotates the lockscreen/homescreen natively without the need for any apps. It could be related to what mode you're running.
Ultimate Rotation Control is really cool! I've now got my lock screen forced to landscape, and my home screen rotates. Very cool. This was really the last piece to keep me on the Phablet UI instead of needing to root and change to the Tablet UI. I really like the pull down notifications and the centered soft buttons, I've grown to love them better than the honeycomb/ICS Tablet UI style.
Ultimate Rotation Control is cool, but it's always sitting in the background. Kinda extreme for such a simple task. Plus it doesn't really fix the problem. When I open my smart cover, if the lockscreen is in landscape, it forces it to portrait... which sounds ok but it shouldn't even be in landscape to begin with. So you're having to wait for it to do it's thing STILL before you can unlock it.
Ultimate Rotation Control DOES force the lockscreen to Portrait, but there is still a rotation delay there.
I'm looking for a way when I open my tab, it is just always in portrait and I can unlock without hesitating. At this point it seems a lockscreen replacement such as WidgetLocker or just disable the security screen altogether.
Anyone else know of a simpler method? Maybe a stock lockscreen replacement apk file that is forced to landscape. My phone is always locked to portrait but my tabs freely rotate.

Reason Why HTC Removed Drop Down Toggles

Pardon me if someone has posted this, but I didn't see it anywhere, and I thought it is an interesting view into the design concepts of the One.
I finally got my One, and after a day with it I realized why HTC removed the toggles that used to be in the drop down. The answer is that they intend us to use the "settings" button that is at the right edge of the notification bar. When I swipe down, I can hit that button and get toggles to airplane, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile data. I suppose those are the main ones that are used.
Of course it is only a shortcut to the normal settings menu, but it basically performs the same function as some previous toggles. On my Amaze, the standard was to swipe down, select the toggles tab, the use the toggle. This has the same number of touches to accomplish those "toggle" tasks.
However, we are still missing the wide array of toggles that were available before.

Those are on the desktop, right? I'm speaking of ones on the bar that can be pulled down and accessed any time. Sense 5 comes with a number of toggles and toggle bars for desktop use.

They are notification toggles not on your home screen. Im glad they are gone, ill wait for the 4.2.2 implementation otherwise you get a messy notification area like on touchwiz.
That may be the intention but I still think it is a poor implementation. I'm not sure there is anyone that would agree the current setup is easier than simply have notification toggles like stock 4.2.
+1 to Power Toggles, great way to bring back the notification toggles. Stock 4.2 notification toggle will probably be integrated but it's annoyingly an extra click. I would prefer it if it was just swipe down then press the toggle you want.

I don't particularly care for it either, since one has to back out of the settings menu.
Overall, I really think that I would prefer more control over the phone rather than having Sense 5 do things automatically.
They will be returned in the 4.2.2 update.
I'm betting we'll get them with the 4.2 update.

But there are drawbacks of using an app for toggles. If you force the toggles to always stay on top then you will have to manually expand every notification as only the top notification is expanded automatically. If toggles are built into the rom then they are not considered as a notification by the system hence no issue. If you want the toggles to always stay on top you have to live with a status bar icon as well. Then there are apps like poweramp and amazon app store which simply refuse to have a notification on top of their own. With amazon app store you will see a "fight" between power toggles and the download progress for the top spot. Needless to say its hugely annoying.
Now if you want automatically expanded notifications then the toggles can be set to low priority so other notifications will go on top of it but that again isnt a great solution as I want my toggles to be at one place all the time.
The best solution in my opinion is to keep your most used toggles in the notification drawer and keep the less frequently used toggles in the quick settings bar thats what I do in CM10.1. I really dont understand why OEMs cant get it right, there should be option to completely disable the toggles for those who dont want it and option to clutter your notification drawer with them if the user so pleases, its just all about options.
Looks like we may see notification toggles.
I like power toggles and all but man are those low res images ugly. >.< For being so popular I'd think they'd support 1080p displays.

Well, you can make the Power Toggle icon in the status bar invisible anyway. And I don't really use any other apps that fights for the top space. However it seems HTC is going to include this in their next big update, seems they got busy:
http://www.htcinside.de/htc-one-and...igen-verbesserungen-soll-vor-der-tuer-stehen/
Rough translation:
Earlier this week, has received a major update with the 230MB software number 1.29.401.12 the HTC one. Among other things, this update has improved the camera and fixed some bugs and improved performance. Now we reach about another update for the HTC one which is to be rolled out soon. This update is based on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and bring some small but nice improvements.
The information comes from Eastern Europe, the exact source but we can not name. But here we go ...
Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
The update as mentioned above are based on Android 4.2.2 and Jelly Bean brings with it ever the latest Android OS version with it. The software number jumps directly from 1.29.x up to 2.x.
Software menu button flashing feed, TV app
The first innovations that should there is a workaround for apps that still require the Menu button. Currently, the HTC one receives at the bottom of an additional bar with a menu button. In early versions of the software you could adjust the back button as on the One that calls this through a long press on the menu. HTC had to remove this feature but unfortunately. Now this problem is to be solved.
In addition, to obtain HTC Flashing feed new content. What does this mean, I can not tell you exactly, unfortunately. But I expect that we will have more opportunities for the stream. Currently, there are in addition to the news feeds so only Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, Twitter, calendar, HTC share, Children mode and TV. I am almost sure that this list should still be extended. Also the app for the TV remote control to be improved. But no details are available for this purpose.
New Quick Settings menu
Many of you will certainly look forward to the next innovation. And that should be re-introduced the Quick Settings in the notification bar. The Chinese version of the HTC one, which was recently officially introduced already comes with a Quick Settings menu. See photo from Engadget China (already posted in #15)
More?
We do not know if those are the only improvements that await us. But I'm almost certain that HTC in a relatively big update (Android 4.1.2 => 4.2.2) will still pack a few other new features. We may get in the next few days still more. We are definitely excited and have been waiting for the update.

Edge screen developments you'd like to see ...

Hello everyone. I'd like for this thread to be a repository for Edge screen developments you'd like to see come to life.
I, for one would love to see edge notifications which when swiped, slide out the app they represent, like a drawer.

I would also like that same feature to come with a setting for adjusting the scroll speed and duration of the preview. In the stock configuration I find that it happens way too quick and there's no way to call it back up.
+1 also on a more comprehensive sports ticker.
And a suggestion I have been calling for is expanded settings for the edge panel itself. Specifically I would like to be able to adjust the background opacity to completely clear.
Already a thread about this.

In my opinion I think Samsung missed the obvious when they didn't put a clock and battery indicator on the notification panel(or any panel), especially because any app the you use on landscape mode you can't slide down just a lttle bit the regular notification slide down menu to get that hint on battery % left or the time without exiting my game, video, etc.
What I would like to see on my edge screen? Everything on the top of the phone when used normally should go to the edge when used on landscape, not some text that does nothing for you. The actual notification panel would be awesome cause then you will have the weather aswell.

For some apps/games yeah but for others that are landscape only nope. Some of this games I had in my S4 and I was able pull the notification slide down menu sideways or in landscape but in the edge it ain't happening, not even by orienting my phone vertically. This is the only thing that makes me think the Note4 would have been a better choice.

Ahh I see. The issue those apps forced landscape one way. Try a rotation app that forces the other way so the edge is on the bottom.

Only works if the app supports both landscape orientations. Those games don't...
I guess it just comes down to each user.
I haven't had any apps not work the way I said.
I believe all the app will rotate 180 tho.
Edge notification panels
I think of all things that this phone is missing, are fully customizable panels for use on the edge screen.
Being limited to the 5-6 standard ones you can get for the phone, I find myself starting to regret getting this phone.
I was seriously hoping that the user would be able to create or even modify the panels a little more heavily.
Who the hell will use the yahoo stock app for god's sake? Would have been better offering a custom panel instead.
I am going to be looking into this to see how hard it is to create/manage these panels.
I will need suggestions as to what people would like these panels to do. Please try and think of what you want and post as many suggestions per post as possible so its easier to get an idea.

This guy has made an edge panel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-edge/themes-apps/edge-navigation-bar-button-t2950486
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dev.ianbyun.edgepanel.navigation
that shows the BATTERY % , TIME, date, day and
* on the first panel:
Red Stripe icon
one click: Notification bar
double click: Quick settings
Yellow Layer icon
one click: Recent apps
Blue Home icon
one click: Home button
Green Backspace icon
one click: Back button
White Lock icon
one click: Flips to second panel
double click: Power button
* on the second panel:
Grey Aperture icon
one click: no function yet
Grey Upward icon
one click: Volume up
Grey Camera icon
one click: Camera
Grey Downward icon
one click: Volume down
White Lock icon
one click: Flips to first panel
double click: Power button
Can you make an Edge panel that hides the statusbar and places it on the edge screen?

Heads up motivations (peek) removal

Love the device but I can't seem to find a way to disable heads up notifications! The system UI tuner cannot be activated by holding the gear icon on the T-Mobile V20. Any help ?
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I'm looking for the same answer, I'd prefer a bit more granular control of my notifications as the options available aren't enough. All I'd want to do is hide the "peek" option.
Seems like you have to go to the app specifically and tap notification from there you can hide them for that app.

How did you turn on battery percent?
In the battery section in settings there's a toggle

None of these settings are just for peek, you'd need access to the System UI Tuner for a slightly more granular adjustment. I would still want to be notified with a sound/vibration, I'd just want to hide peek which gets in the way when I'm doing other things on the phone.

Bumping because I am looking for the capability to do the same thing. For some reason they (ATT and/or LG) have blocked the System UI tuner which allows for blocking peeking notifications while keeping the sound and vibrations. Android not having a simple option to globally disable peeking is greatly annoying.
If there is no way to enable the System UI tuner is there another way to disable peeking notifications on the LG V20 while still allowing vibration/noise? Silent notifications are almost as useless as peeking/heads up notifications.
LG has. There has never to my knowledge has there been a LG device that has had it since it was introduced.

System UI Tuner is a special option, that has to be enabled (akin to Developer Options), added to Android M and above so barely any phones have it. Some carriers and manufacturers have disabled it on those that do, such as the V20.
Regardless of the System UI tuner there should be some other way on the LG V20 to disable peeking per app or globally. We are just trying to find a way on the LG V20 without also having to silence sound/vibration. There also does not seem to be an app to take care of the issue since those like HeadsOff are no longer compatible.

All you are able to do is what was linked above in the screenshot.
-Block (No notifications)
-Show silently (no sound, vibrate, or peek)
-Lock screen notifications (all, sensitive, none)
-Priority (yes/no)
Am looking for this too it's driving me nuts anyone? It was present on galaxy note 7
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers mobile app
add me to the list
this is an unbelievable situation, its driving me crazy.. i did lots of experiments and researches, still no solution, appearantly its an app based and not a general thing, i dont know why, apps and Andriod N.. Whatsapp in my case will be the exmaple
My conclusion is based on the below tests and readings:
- All my whatsapp settings are set to vibrate and/or sound, but no pop up
- Am using Novo launcher, so i thought the launcher is the problem, however, tried the default one, but still pops up
- surprisingly, Textra app, Telegram app, some other calendar apps, doesn't show a pop up peek if u disabled it from the app itself. keeping the sound and vibrate on as wanted.
- I sent to whatsapp an email, but the email they replied with was useless and didnt address the problem itself
- i tried few apps at the play store, but all of them didnt work, as non is built for Andriod N
- the only way is what mentioned in this thread, where you will block the notification alert and show it silently, and thats not what we want.
- Yes the UI Tuner is not activated and cant be activated in this device
The End result, its a problem in these specific apps with Andriod N, and its the problem from LG not activating the UI Tuner, if only there is a way to communicate with LG and force them to solve this problem.
Glad to hear others thoughts..
Dear all,
I can confirm that i was able to block the headsup using adb commands. Refer and search through the forums here at xda, few threads explained it.. Easy in 30 min done
adb shell settings put global heads_up_notifications_enabled 0
You're welcome.
You should still get the ticker-like notification in the second screen.
thanks it works

Yes am still getting the ticker and thats a very useful feature in LGv20, i dont mind that as long as the headsup is disabled.
Ok now how do we get the notification to show longer in the second screen? Most my apps time out in about 2 seconds with the exception of the stock messaging app, and bluemail (both show for approx 5 seconds)...

Moreover, you can still assign actions to the swipe on the screen and down and up. How convenient for you. If you are talking about a swipe on your home screen. Or do you talk about the swipe on notice

no i talk about notification that arrived at notification bar or lock screen. i want to swipe down notification for read more and fast reply like newly announced notification shade feature in miui 9 but dont released yet.
Think there is any way to run FGO on this ROM? You ( or devs ) nearly tackled all problems I had with Miui roms, but because of the "special" root simply unrooting and removing SuperSU is not enough.
