how long do you think - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how long do you think the nexus 10 will get updates for?
do you think the updates will come quickly (new android versions) since its pure android and doesnt have a carrier like telus or sprint whom would have to push the update themselves?

History shows for about two years.

the nexus 10 is pretty powerful, but obvs not for too much longer. i wonder how much more powerful the next n10 will be. sometimes updates dont happen cus the device cant support it but im sure the current n10 wont go obselete for sometime and not be powerful enough for big updates. just imo

Mmmmmmm. New nexus 10... can't wait...

If you root the Dev community will usually update and support devices using custom ROMs for longer than what the manufacturer would normally do. At least in my experience

I would think Snapdragon 800 or similar in the next N10 as its competitors such as the Kindle Fire HD 2 and Surface RT 2 is rumored to include the Snapdragon 800.

[Q] Missed Nexus 4 in Canada again! What should I do?

OK so I was at work and missed the chance to get the nexus 4 again! Supposedly gonna take 7-8 weeks now to ship according to mobilesyrup. NOw if I do get the chance to get the Nexus 4 again in a couple weeks, I will recieve it in March or Feb. My question is that is it worth it to get a November phone in Feb? Now I have a **** lg xenon and gossip which I could last out till next year for the Nexus 5, or I might get the s4. Should I wait?
What is expected from Nexus 5 and S4
-1080p screen
-10-12mp camera
-2ghz processor estimate
-2gb ram or maybe 2.5-3gb
-5inch screen
-Quad core maybe more?
Overall I think the smartphone as we know it is going through a transition phase so should I wait? I don't have enough money to get a new phone every year like some people. I buy a phone for 2-3 years. Will I be stuck with old technology with this phone?
-WHAT THE FUUDGE SHOULD I DOOO????
Mod please move to q&a if you think that is were it should be!

You're asking us for advice to speculate on a phone that is unreleased (better yet, a year away)?
Yes, get the Nexus 5. Historically, a newer Nexus is better than an older Nexus. Might need confirmation on that though.

Only you can answer the question of whether you should wait. In Feb the nexus 4 will still be a great phone. Is only 3 months old on 2/13. You seem to think your current phone will last to next November for nexus 5. If you think that just wait.
In the end you have to use the device, no one can tell you what to like or what works for you. My wife thinks I'm insane buying a new phone every year. I don't, I like upgrading to the new nexus or whatever the new stock android experience is. Been that way since g1. Just what I like. Others will say go buy a note 2. Since this is the nexus forum you'll find no shortage of posts about how great the nexus 4 is.
Oh, please stop bumping the thread, it's annoying.

Buy nexus 4 or wait for the new google X phone?

Been trying to decide if i want to get the new nexus 4 ( LOOKS AMAZING!) or wait for the X phone that was just announced. I've heard some bad things about the nexus 4 which is making me hesitant. What are your thoughts? I'M still rocking the G2 from way back so im pretty due for a new phone!

It was more of a rumor than an announcement, and i wouldn't expect it to come out any time soon.
Like I'll tell anyone, if you keep on waiting for the next big thing, you'll wait forever.
The answer is simple by answering this question. Does the desire for the nexus 4 outweigh the usefulness of your current phone?
For me, it was a no-brainer. I was not happy with my vivid stock, I did not care for the bugginess (<--- is that even a word?) of the available Roms, but loved aosp.
If you feel you'll be happy with your current phone, then wait until a phone comes out that you must have.
The phone probably won't be out till summer most likely. Then the next nexus will be around the corner. Great hardware or not I don't know if I'd even get one if it doesn't have direct from Google software updates. Don't care if its a different branch than the nexus line... It has to be straight from Google or its no better or worse than the galaxy line from Samsung or the one series from HTC.

Thats what im thinking. Ive been babying my G2 so its lasted me a lot longer than others ( the whole loose hinge shenanigans). My phone is still serving its purpose but at the same time i know it wont last that much longer. N4 seems like an awesome device with a few quirks. For those that have the N4 can you tell me what you both like AND dislike about the phone. Want to start weighing the pros and cons.

I love absolutely everything about the phone. Only thing I don't like is the limit on memory (I have the 16GB). It'st he first phone I've owned that has yet to experience any lag or slowdown whatsoever.
I would personally go for Nexus 4 because
1. The x phone is just a rumor and hasn't even been announced
2. If it is going to be sold by Motorola who makes money off the hardware, then the x phone will be more expensive than Nexus 4 by Google who makes money off by software (which explains the price of Nexus 4)

Choosing a device for Ubuntu

looking at Canonicals system requirements for Ubuntu here, it would appear that even the nexus 4 which is the best officially supported device currently isnt up to the "Superphone" requirements. The gs4 google edition seems like a reasonable choice however it only has 16gb emmc so it too doesnt fully meet up to the superphone requirements. I am seriously considering just waiting for the first snapdragon 800 phones to ship as i would expect much better performance for ubuntu.
Do you think the snapdragon s4 pro(nexus 4), or even 600(gs4 ge) can provide a good ubuntu desktop experience?
I think that a regular 1.2Ghz Dual Core can provide a good ubuntu desktop experience.
A nexus 4 or gs4 ge probably can provide an awesome experience.
LG Optimus G could handle Ubuntu touch fairly well.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Ehh forget the optimus G, it's all about mako.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The "requirements" are set for phone manufactures so that when Ubuntu is ready to be released on devices the requirements should still be a top end phone. Those are not meant to be read and followed by normal users flashing over Android or something.
Well... you make a compelling argument for the nexus 4. Im really debating picking up the white model when it comes out now. However i still feel hesitant knowing the phone has already been out for 9 months and will likely have a successor in the next few months.

For now I'm putting daily builds on my GNex... Ubuntu Touch is is no way ready for seamless desktop mode yet...
Once it all comes together, the N4 will probably get UT and see use as a daily driver. The system requirements cited in the OP are most likely for OEMs considering new hardware dedicated to Ubuntu Touch. Meanwhile, while the world waits for that dedicated hardware, the Nexus Line is obviously the smartest choice for LTS (Long Term Support) through Canonical.

If they cannot get a manufacturer to support them and out out UT devices then the Nexus devices are the smartest choice, however if they have a manufacturer that is wanting to build phones specifically for UT that would be the best thing for them to do and the smartest choice. I don't see many big manufacturers steeping forward though and I wonder if it is Google stopping them from doing so, that's a little tin hattish I know but.....

[Q] Next Nexus

As I continue to read new about the upcoming google device, I cannot help but wonder if it will manifest. Many people are pointing to a Motorola x phone. However, I have waited my time for this new device and more importantly a newer version of Android OS. I would like to know all of your opinions on this topic. I really want a Nexus 5 made by HTC, but that is just a wish. Please let me know what you believe will happen along with your dream phone.
Enjoy,

Personally I would like to see a Sony Nexus 5. Look at the build quality of the Xperia Z Ultra, the big-a** phone. It looks great and is thin as all hell. Their too invested into the Xperia name to do so. And I'm not sure how Google feels about Phablets but I'd like to see a Nexus Phablet. A 5.5-6 inch screen running pure Android with a almost 2GHz processor, smoothly flowing thanks to (wait for it...) 3(!) GB of RAM. No, no, no I mean 2GB of RAM. I would like to see a HTC Nexus though.
How about an Apple made Nexus?...

If you guys just put two and two together.... in december when they have historically released their phones for the past like 3 or 4 years in a row.... we will probably see a 4.7-5inch phone made by Motorola which google just acquired, with either the sapdragon 600 or the samsung exnos 5 octa ... and at least 2 gb of ram.. Theres been rumors of this for a while, looks like internals will be identical, only difference is screen size and it'll probably be more expensive. I'd probably prefer a larger tablet to fit the size of a sheet of paper but i'm not sure if I'd pay extra for it since it'll be close to the size of a laptop screen.

yeah, it's been known for a good bit and even mentioned in one of these threads here. seeing as the 10.1 is $600 i'm sure as hell not gonna spend that much more on an android device that i break a warranty if i want root access. i'll just get a wintab and put what ever os i want. if next year's samsung tablet jumps the $600 price, i'll just have to do with out the spen or just stick with some x64 tablets.

I believe I will stick with the 10.1 as the screen is currently rounded up to 300 ppi. The 12.2 will have a lower ppi if it has the same resolution, and if it has a higher resolution then the extra processing power will have to accommodate that. The 10.1 is already a little sluggish as it is (hoping for more snappy updates).

Samsung's product releases are already shoddy enough. I'm perfectly content with just getting the friggin 2014 note 10.1, but it's not available yet in Canada despite it being out for 3 weeks and counting in the US. All Samsung Canada has to say is 'sorry we don't know lol'. Anyway if they really want to compete well with Apple, they should really have a shorter wait between announcement and release. Also release simultaneously internationally!
I have half a mind to just go get the damn iPad Air at the time it was announced (which I won't anyway). Apple announced it a month later than the new note and it's going to be coming out sooner here! Hell we don't even have a firm release date for the WiFi version here. Even in the US there's no word about the LTE version. Crappy logistics.

Why don't you post this somewhere more appropriate? It has nothing to do with the 12.2. Developers do what they for fun and have real lives. I am sure some one will get a recovery for this.
They could have announced a 12.2 Version coming later in the fall at launch.

I actually heard about the 12 before I heard about the refreshed 10.1. I debated over waiting for the 12 or getting the 10 and opted for the 10 since I have my 11.6 700t. I can easily dual boot a decent working version of android on it.
Coming soon maybe... I wonder how much it'll cost
