Replacing S4, what to do out if box? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I bought an S4 about a month ago from Best Buy for $199. Walmart sells them for $168 so I went to get a price match. I'm a silver rewards member so thought I had 60 days. For some reason the price match is only good for 15 days but they want to have me return my current phone and give me a new one. I'm stuck on mf3 but going to make sure the new one is old. What is the first thing I should do when I take it out of the box? The first time I didn't know, and got auto updated. Thanks

Take the sim out, it won't auto update. Then put a custom Rom on it. If you just root it there are three files you need to freeze/delete. I don't remember specifically what they are but they're att update, fwfota, and one other. Our something like that.

Just take out the sim card and leave wifi off. Turn ohone on and check WHICH firmware version is installed. If it is MDL or the older version then go home. Download the root and recovery exploits FOR MDL/Older fimware. Follow the instructions to root and out recovery on your phone. Next I would suggest also downloading one of the roms you want to use. Now flash the rom. Once it is all done you will have root, recivery, and a rom. Now put the sim card in and start downloading all your apps.
As long as you have root, recovery, and a rom it SHOULD NOT ask to install the update. If your NOT SURE if the rom has the update firmware removed ask in the respective thread first. Then ENJOY your phone. ..

At least with 4.2 you can disable each of the "bloat" and ad apps. Just go to the application manager and disable them from there.

LOL....my wife traded her iPhone 5 for a white S4 off craigslist. I took it to the AT&T store to get a micro SIM instead of the nano one from her iPhone. I had it turned off until the guy got the SIM and tried it in the phone. It turned on and everything was fine. It then connected to the AT&T Wi-Fi network and BOOM the update started downloading. The rep said "Oh it has a software update" I yelled "No, no, no, no!" grabbed it from his hand, ripped the cover off and took the battery out. Hands down one of the scariest moments of my life. The reps shouldnt be entitled to let the update run like that. Hopefully it worked out for you.I too cant stand the bloatware.

Let's be perfectly honest, most reps have absolutely no idea about any update or what it's reprocussions could possibly be. I feel if you go into the store and have the prior knowledge that this update can occur you should just be upfront with the rep. They are sales people and will be more than happy to oblige you, especially in an at&t store.

I swapped out my Vibrant for a new one and forgot to delete the file for root. Is this a problem or will T-Mobile not even notice the file and just wipe the internal mem? I unrooted it before I sent it in but I forgot to delete the file.

I hope you don't get charge cuz if they find out you will. Trust me I got a couple of friends working for Tmo.
I did the same thing OP, no big deal... I didn't get charged..
When I got mine I asked the sales person about rooting the phone. Keep in mind this is a salesperson and not T-Mobile corporate, but she really knew her stuff. She was the one everyone else in the store went to for help when they were not sure of the answer to a customer's question.
She said, if you have to return it just get it back to looking stock. Have the stock ROM on the phone and remove any obvious root or root required apps if they are still installed after you put the stock ROM on there. She said if it made me more comfortable I could remove busybox and su, but that nobody was going to go digging into the file system to see if the phone was rooted.
Basically they know, even if they don't officially acknowledge, that rooting the phone does not break it. If the phone is running stock firmware and it is still having issues then it is highly likely that the issue is hardware. Also, the preliminary acceptance or denial of the claim is done in store. If it makes it back to the factory it is pretty much accepted unless something really fishy pops up, like it is obvious you have been dissembling the device. They might kick it back if they find a FFC or soldering at the GPS antenna, but they are not looking for the su executive at that point.
They don't check the phones out that they get back they just restore them or whatever

I found a TMO store with the Gingerbread SDCARDS but>>

I found a store in my town that had the SD Card gingerbread update so I went there today. While I was waiting to be seen, I saw a My Touch 4g get updated using the SD Card by a customer service person. It took about 10 minutes. I was encouraged to see how quick it took. Now it was my turn. The customer service (C/S) who assisted me was a former tech support person for Tmoble who was now working in a store. She was very knowledgeable and very nice. She took my sdcard out and put in the gingerbread sdcard. The update started. There was about 10 steps that the update had to go through. The first step was 'bootloader'. The C/S said that this was the first G2 that she has done. She said she had done her My Touch 4g Slide and the update went smooth so again I was encouraged. I was happy to not have to wait for the OTA.
Well the update started on the first step and 45 minutes later, it was still on the first step. So she stopped the update to allow me to do a factory reset of my phone and I did so. The store had two gingerbread sdcards so she tried the second one on my phone. I went to starbucks for coffee and 20 minutes later, the update was still stuck on the first step. So, she told me that there was something wrong. She asked me if I had done anything to the phone? I said no. I told her that this G2 was a replacement phone that I had just recieved about a month ago because my first G2 stop charging. Well she gave up and so did I.
I called TMO C/S and they said that they had no record of the G2's having problems with the store gingerbread sdcards. He first asked me if I had any third party apps on my phone, I said no. They told me that the cards did not come from them but they came from HTC. So, I called HTC. The guy there commenced to reading the press release that we all have read a thousands times about being able to go to the store and get gingerbread after August 6. He also told me that he had no record of G2's having problems getting the update at the stores. I asked him if the same SD Card was to be used on the My Touch and on the G2? He said that he did not know and yes he was tech support . He advised me to call HTC headquarters at a different number and ask them that but they were closed.
I know some of you are gonna tell me to do the update myself with the links that are eveywhere on the web. Well, I'm not gonna do that. Tmo and HTC gotta get it together. They are running a business and they MUST do what they say they gonna do. I know that TMO don't have to provide any updates, I know this but they are offiering the updates and they tell us to wait for the OTA or go to a store after the Aug 6. Well I did that, I got nothing. By the way, there are three TMO stores in my town and only one had the SDCARDS. Peace
Well they DON'T know what they are doing otherwise the custom rom community wouldn't be as big as it is if they were able to get anything right themselves. So your **** out of luck. Let us know when you want a good working phone.

That's being kinda rude. If he doesn't want to root or apply manually he doesn't have to. He's just telling us what happened. No need to be rude.
OP, if the SDcard update didn't work, you should wait and see if you can get the OTA. If the OTA isn't working for your device either, you should contact T-mobile and express that you'd like a phone with 2.3 or will properly update to 2.3, assuming that you don't want to root or manually apply the update yourself.
That's ridiculous....minus the rude part, it is true tmobile and htc would much rather see you buy one of their newer phones and renew your contact than get a good working update. Try custom roms if you can...the vision is one of the easiest to root and stable when rooted and there are hundreds of roms around, I'm sure theres some rom gingerbread flavored you'll like.

Whether you choose to root or not, it's your device and you can do what you want with it. If you want the stock T-mo experience, then they should give you what they promised you. Good luck!
While I disagree with you rooting (many of the problems here are people who shouldn't even need to root in the first place, it's not for everybody), I don't understand why you wouldn't manually update. Download the file, name it update.zip, put on your sd card root, press a few buttons, done!

I may have the answer. You said that you had received the phone as a replacement. Did it already have gingerbread on it? Remember that some of the phones people were getting as replacements had gingerbread 2.3.3 on them and if your phone was one of those you can't update from 2.3.3 to the final release which is 2.3.4. Just a thought.

I am very familar with rooting. I rooted my G1 within 5 months of having it and it stayed rooted for a year and half more until I retired it and got the G2. The reason I chose not to root my G2 was because I did not want to be contastantly flashing and removing roms and fixing issues. I got tired of baby sitting my G1. I have other things to do.

So... you tried a bunch of half-baked "roms" made by a bunch of kiddies who don't know what they're doing and found it a royal PITA. Ever heard of a "superstock" system image? Its basically the factory image with a few goodies added in, specifically ROOT. It doesn't require any "babysitting", but opens the door for some amount of enhancement, like the ability to change your hosts file (usually used to block spam), or the ability to delete useless cruft from the system image (i.e., you don't like the gmail application? Delete it.). You don't have to go with a full out special brownies system, but it is nice to at least gain control of what you own.
The store I work at finally got the SD cards to update, but the G2 update will not install.
The update works fine on the mytouch 4g, so the card is goood.
Well that sucks. Hope you get the issue resolved soon.
Looks like I figured it out. The G2 would only update if the battery was %100 charged.
Any less and it would freeze during the update.
Now that I know the update works I'll try and post the files when I get home.
Thanks atlp99!
I'd really like to get my hands on that file. I assume it is a pc10img.zip ? Seems like this is the best solution for those of us running the 2.3.3 leak...

Here is the G2 update off of the micro sd cards the stores are receiving.

Just used this file to update my G2 running the 2.3.3 "leaked" gingerbread rom. No problems. Just slip the file into your root directory, and hold the volume down while turning the phone on. Piece of cake. You will lose your application data, of course, but you'll be updated...

Having my battery at 100 percent did not work for me. The update still just sat there looking at me. This is crazy buy while I was trying to figure out what the problem was. I decided to do checkin and about 5 minutes later, I got the updae OTA

Verizon R800x owners are completely hosed.

Google searches tell me that I'm not alone in this - in fact, as far as I can determine, this is the case for every single Verizon r800x owner who made the mistake of updating their phone to 2.3.4 a few months ago.
2.3.4 completely broke push data, as I'm sure many of you know. Gmail, Calendar, Facebook notifications, etc...none of it works, at all. A sync has to be forced by either manually refreshing in the app, or turning auto-sync off and on again. This is a pretty huge problem - I pay over $150/month so that I can get important e-mails when they come in, and so that I can make a calendar appointment on my computer and have it instantly pushed to my phone.
For r800i users this isn't a huge deal - they can just flash a new rom or rollback to 2.3.3. r800x owners, on the other hand, are stuck with a locked bootloader. ZergRush is great for people who are still on 2.3.3, but 2.3.4 patched the security hole that allowed ZergRush to work (hellions with blue flames...).
I've spent about 6 combined hours on the phone with both Verizon and Sony about this. Sony is COMPLETELY worthless. They have no idea what I'm talking about when I say 'push data,' and when I mention 'Facebook notifications,' they instantly start up with their script about troubleshooting the built in Facebook app. Useless. Verizon wants nothing to do with this issue - they say that if there is an issue with the phone hardware, it is Sony's fault, and Verizon is not liable. The best that Verizon is offering me is to spend another 3 hours on the phone with tech support, where they'll have me reboot the phone 15 times and **** around with auto-sync for a while before they declare it a known issue and send me a new phone of the same model. I've been informed that all phones that they would have in the warehouse would be updated to the latest firmware, so I'd just have a new 2.3.4 that would be as broken as the one I have now. They'd do that 3 or 4 more times before they finally gave me a different phone. They are refusing to cancel my contract or allow me to buy a new phone at an upgrade price. Am I unreasonable for thinking that, if services are no longer being provided to me as I understood that they would be when I signed the contract, I should be allowed out of the contract?
Has anyone had ANY success with this issue? To phrase my question more specifically: have any Verizon R800x owners who updated their phones to 2.3.4 managed to root or unlock their phones, or get Verizon to alleviate the problem in any way?
This is driving me absolutely insane. I'm pretty close to just selling this piece of **** on eBay and buying a pay-as-you-go phone at the gas station down the block.

You can just reflash the 2.3.3 ftf... then root with zergrush and rename the files FOTA.apk that will prevent the phone from receiving the update. Or even better unlock your bootloader. I unlokced mine last summer and totally worth it. You do have options with your phone even if the bootlaoder is unlocked... if you are rooted you restore a 2.3.3 nandroid.

Dude... I am on a R800x. With an unlocked Bootloader. Many many R800x users here have an unlocked bootloader. Some had it done last summer via an unlock code like me, or others unlocked via the user alejandrissimo who unlocks your phones bootloader for $24. And this fee he charges is NOT because alejandrissimo makes money on. The software he uses to unlock your bootlaoder charges a fee for certain aspects of teh software each time he uses it. So the $24 fee you pay goes straight to the software, he make $0 on it.
There is info all over this forum about how to unlock your bootloader, root, flash an FTF on CDMAs..

Good luck. Again, let us know how it goes.

all I've ever done was remove the Mobile Care app with Titanium Backup and my phone has yet to ask me for an update since. This is when I was on 2.3.2 and now that I'm on 2.3.4.
I don't think I have any issues with push notifications on 2.3.4, but then again I don't use the gmail or normal mail app. i used Enhanced Email and juicedefender. Juicedefender enables data when I turn my screen on and also every 30 mins or so if the screen is off that long. I get email notifications generally between when they are sent and 15 mins later.
As jgregoryj1 said, flash tool works just fine with the R800X straight out of the box, locked boot loader and all. One important thing, when you flash back to 2.3.3 make sure to get root (very simple with super one click; again works with locked bootloader) and use titanium back up to disable the app called mobile care. Otherwise your phone will automatically update to 2.3.4. Even if you tell it not to update it will still do it in the middle of the night unless you uninstall/freeze mobile care

Tommy_861, I can understand why it would be upsetting for features to stop working that previously did before. Per our product team, connectivity issues with Google Talk were found to be caused by changes to Google's encryption servers and this is no longer supported by the Xperia Play. I apologize for any inconvenience. The issue with Gmail sync has been reported, but I don't have any info on when this will be resolved. For Facebook, are you using the application or the browser? You too huh?...why look at the att play....that one is fine isn't it?
Sent from my R800x using xda app-developers app
someone named poorxperiaplay replied and called them on it, then I replied as well:
I agree with poorxperiaplay here. The problem is directly related to all Google services not just Gtalk, thats why Gmail doesn't sync right, nor does the calendar, nor does it work right when you pick out an app on the Google Play web site on your PC and try to install from there. It never live syncs with the server.
You can't just take out features like that because you broke them and then say sorry. People rely on the Google services, its why we bought an Android Phone! Not only that, ALL other versions of the Xperia Play, R800i, R800a, R800at, all run 2.3.4 official from Sony successfully. Verizon modifies it for roll out to their phones, to add their software, which means your product team broke it, and they aren't spending the time to fix it.
And yes the facebook application does not sync properly or even work properly on 3G either. The sync issue has been a problem from day 1. The web site on the phone works fine.
These are major issues that are fundamental to all R800x phones. This needs to be fixed, immediately.

New S4

I was going to upgrade tomorrow. The guy at the store said they got a shipment of S4s two days ago. Does anyone know if the devices are shipping with MF3 yet? Anyone who got a new one recently have any info?
Also, if it doesn't have MF3, do I have to do anything to keep it from installing? I saw some people saying not to use the phone til I'm home and can root it and freeze the update app. They claim the upgrade will automatically happen without my consent. Other people claim the upgrade requires user approval.
Thanks guys, I really want root so this is a deal breaker for me The guy at the store assured me all phones get updates when I asked if they were up to date. I didn't want to elaborate I didn't want that though haha.

If you are fortunate enough to get an S4 with AMDL firmware, then I'd root it and freeze the AT&T updater with Titanium Backup. Keep in mind, you'll probably want to flash a custom rom because the stock AT&T software is so laggy it almost makes the device unusable.

I don't plan on buying it if it doesn't. I just want to make sure it stays that way. I don't want to drive home, pull it out of my pocket, and discovered it auto-updated or some other horrible thing.

I don't think it can automatically update unless you agree to it. But be careful with the very clueless at&t reps, because they might actually update your phone for you.
Check the box. It will show the firmware revision number right on it. I recently got my replacement through Asurion, and it was MDL.
And yeah, like the others said, don't let him/her update the phone. They may wish to place test calls, but as soon as you have it in-hand, just turn off Mobile Data and the WiFi. You don't need those to place test calls.
Thanks. I have 14 days to bring it back even if things go horribly wrong. However, I am trading in my Infuse which I won't be able to get back. So I'm not sure what I'd do if I had to go down that road.

I'll report back tomorrow. To confirm: MDL and MDB are both good, MF3 is bad?

Correct. MDL and MDB are fine, but if your on MDB I am not sure if the update for MDL will come through. MDB was absolutely horrible, beyond horrible actually. Everything lagged, everything was choppy, and the modem sucked. MDL was an improvement, but nothing drastic. I hear MF3 is really good, it just kills root and loki.

It is possible to manually use Odin to get up to MDL version. Let it be known that the MF3 patch will check to be sure you are on MDL at least, so I can't see that they would pull that OTA any time soon.
As a last resort, I have a copy of the MDL update that you could theoretically just flash with a custom recovery.
ROM Suggestions? I'm prepping for tomorrow's surgery. Speed would be number one priority. Also I like lockscreen clock and % battery in the top bar. Other than that, I'm not picky.
I eyeballed goldeneye but it doesn't seem to have % battery, and it retains TW, which most people seem to dislike?
Be wary of speed. It's the enemy and number one culprit of many problems here on xda. If you're device is running MDL, simply make sure it is charged and pull the sim. Then begin your rooting, etc. Check out the I337 guide in my signature. All steps are important.
Touchwiz roms are in Android development, aosp roms are in original Android development. Cheers

Ah sorry, speed of the ROM and thus my phone. I'm not trying to rush through the steps and brick my phone ; )
I got my s4 today via best buy and no mf3

I updated mine and am pretty content with it. It is much smoother than the original software and the phone overall works great. I guess if you want an unlocked s4 you need to buy the Google one or a Canada one if possible.

That'll work. Try out the rom GoldenEye

Chances of MDL being available

So my update is on Sept 1, and I plan on going anywhere I need to in order to find a MDL phone. I NEED my CM10.2! haha:angel:.
What are the chances I'll find one? I know they are getting slimmer by the minute, but I'm thinking maybe some rural Target or BB may have one? I've been trying to get my update anytime I'm near a store, but they all tell me I have to wait for the 1st of the Month. dumbbb.
Or do I wait for Note 3/LG G2/new Sony? (i know, i know, s4 forum...)
Or do I wait for the new iphone, sell it on fleabay/cl, and buy a Google Edition s4?
I dont NEED to update right away... But my skyrocket battery is KILLING me.
AHHH I hate this!
I'm on MF3 and I'm suffering with Touchwiz (I'm a huge fan of AOSP).
I'm pretty sure the Note 3 (from AT&T at least) will have a locked boot loader so it'll be the same situation us MF3 users are in right now.
Since MF3 has been out since July, I'd think that many/most S4's would have it. If you're willing to sell/buy unlocked, go ahead for the Google edition(I personally like black mist much more than white frost, which is what the Google edition comes with. ).

Actually, ask if the employee would be kind enough to let you see the stickers on their boxes. The side of the box shows the firmware revision (on brand new devices only). The employees, nor AT&T would have absolutely no reason to update something in-the-box like that, so this sticker should be accurate. It's the same sticker that includes all the serial numbers/etc.
It may or may not be beneficial to explain that you want a specific version of the firmware, otherwise the employee(s) may get a bit suspicious of a request like this. They may think you are trying to steal IMEI numbers or something stupid.

Not exactly a lie. In the very end, MDL does perform better, because we can flash 'whatever' firmware we want... some of which can perform better.
whatever you do, DONT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. install through apk's and then go to cm10.2. you can get terminal and the goomanager files, and install w/o internet....
Just ask to check it out before you buy. Most sales persons won't have an issue with it. Find one with MDL baseband and ask them to Leave it in box and that you prefer to set it up yourself
I'm running cm 10.2 on my s4 its so much better than touch wiz and the only feature I miss is the Samsung camera app.
Also I agree don't connect to the internet until after you have rooted and flashed a custom ROM as you can only delay the mf3 update 3 times before it auto installs
Good luck!

I think thats what I'm gonna do. I'll see if I can find a MDL, and if not.... i'll cross that bridge when i get there.
Thanks for the help, friends!

I just picked up a 32GB version yesterday.
It has AMDL firmware. Turned on airplane mode as soon as I could and rooted then renamed the file to prevent an OTA.

good news! Thanks! Is it september 1 yet?
Well, from here on out...ATT released a statement a few weeks ago stating they no longer will be supporting unlocked devices...which means all their smart phones will theoretically have a locked boot loader.
With that said...personally I wouldn't get another device and sell it for the Google edition. As far as I know (correct me if I'm wrong someone) the Google edition does not support touchwiz ROMs, only aosp. However you can get the T-Mobile variant which has an unlocked boot loader and allows you to flash anything from touch wiz to aosp based ROMs to the actual Google edition ROM...plus the T-Mobile supports all the bands that ATT uses so you won't have problems with service

the google edition (i9505G) is theoretically an i9505 running a nexus firmware... you should have no issues running a touchwiz rom made for i9505.
funny thing is when i got mine it was on MDL from at&t about a month and a half ago and it never onced tried to update. then i had to do a factory reset which put me on MDB and i want to go back to MDL. theres an over the air update now that im on MDB but i froze the apk because im scared its the MF3 firmware. i'd love to go back to MDL though is that even possible ?
I seen a little bit of bad information here that I feel I should clear up.
When you first get your device on MDL. Just don't insert the SIM card. You can power it on, and keep wifi completely open. No airplane mode needed. The OTA is pushed through on the AT&T network. If you don't have the SIM in on boot, it will not pull the update. The reason behind this is that the Phone verifies the network you are connected to. It can't verify AT&T without the SIM.
The only way you could possibly get the update without the SIM in is if you turn the phone on with the activated SIM, at this point it calls for the update. When on WiFi, it downloads it. So as soon as it calls for the update, you then need to remove required items to stop it. Even if you pull the SIM it will continue the download. So just don't turn it on with the SIM in it. I know this from personal experience and reading the Forums.

Thanks for the clear up! I was under the impression it would download as soon as i was connected to wifi.
Thanks again!:good:
Even if it downloads you don't have to install it. You can always disable the apps that prompt you to update.
I was in the same boat, being ready to upgrade after MF3 was released.
I spent the last two days checking 7 different ATT stores in the Los Angeles area for a 16GB S4 with the MDL firmware, unfortunately they had all been sold or replaced with the newer update. I was lucky to find one store that still had a 32GB version with MDL. I really dont need the extra 16GB, especially for an extra $50, but as long as i can Loki the damn thing Im happy. You might have to look for a 32GB version if you want a chance to find one as these do not sell anywhere near as frequently as the 16GB model.
Just do not put the SIM in until you block the OTA packages.

The above quote is inaccurate. I purchased a used MDL S4 during the last week of August. For the first few days, I did not activate the SIM. However, whenever I turned on Wi-Fi, the update would start to download immediately.
Short story: I placed the su binary and su app on the root of the internal sd card via Samsung Kies, ran CASUAL to root the phone and install twrp, downloaded Quick Terminal via my desktop, placed Quick Terminal on the phone via Kies, installed it, then used Quick Terminal to disable the three apps causing the OTA update as well as delete the fragment of the update that downloaded via Wi-Fi. (I posted the commands in the loki, motochopper thread.)
After doing this, I activated the SIM and didn't have to rush to find a ROM since OTA was disabled.

Just got back from upgrading to the S4. I asked the clerk to look for a MDB or MDL and lo and behold he walked out from the back with a Black Mist 16GB MDL in his hand. Damn am I glad. :good:
