Whites have a yellowish tint? - Nexus 7 (2013) General

First of all, I love this tablet. The only complaint that I have is that compared to my 2 previous 2012 Nexus 7s (now sold) and my Nexus 4, the new Nexus 7 I just received yesterday has a rather different color temperature. Whites aren't white -- instead, it has a yellowish tint to it.
Are any of you guys experiencing this, or is this just an LCD panel lottery that I lost? I'm wondering if I should swap this one out at Staples, return it and wait for the next batch, or if this is a normal characteristic of the JDI panels used in the 2013 Nexus 7?
This is really confusing to me, because in the AnandTech mini review, the 2013 Nexus 7's white point average is 6940K while the original Nexus 7's is 6215K. So my new tablet should have a cooler/more blue color than my old one, but instead it's the opposite and looks warmer/yellow.

mine is like yours so I just think its that way but I prefer it actually

I'm seeing a lot of green wash into whites/browns with mine, and poor black levels (too bright.)
The effect is more pronounced if there's a lot of green in a photo to start with.
I've posted photos comparing what I'm seeing on this device with what I see on a Note 8 in some of the other forum threads on this device.

No the whites are white especially compared to the old N7 which had yellow tint

That gives me hope that not all the displays used in the 2013s look like this. I ordered this one online from Staples, so I haven't seen another 2013 in person yet. I guess I'll head to Staples and Best Buy and look at the demo units and compare them to mine.
Edit:
Reading the other threads make me nervous about exchanging it now. This one has no dust under the screen, no dead pixels, no random reboots, the wireless charging works fine, etc. Aside from the yellowish screen, it's perfect.

I've seen what you guys are talking about with different Nexus 10s side by side. Had one where white looks like snow and two others beside it piss yellow looking white. I wonder if that's due to sourcing the display from different companies. My 2013 N7 arrives tomorrow so I hope it's not funky.

Just bought mine from my local Best Buy tonight. My screen looks perfectly fine. Also, no random reboots(was on it 4 hours straight), and no dust under the screen. I'll check it out again in the morning, but keeping my fingers crossed that mine is good! I didn't even know there were any issues with them until reading this thread

Displays ARE different.
Get over it, guys.
With the Sony Xperia Tablet Z, many people also always complain about the display being too yellowish.
Some displays are too bluish, some have a reddish tint (like my prev-gen N7), some greenish (my SGS2), some yellowish (my Tablet Z).
That's how it is. Some people will shout: "But my Samsung has perfect white", bla... But this isn't true, either. Most probably their display will have blue tint, but they are accustomed to it.
If you want perfect colors, you have to buy Apple, and even then you can't be sure.
And now enjoy your Nexus 7,damnit!

I actually have a good screen, no reboots, (haven't tested wireless charging, probably should) but I'm not actually experiencing the yellowish tint. Try to download Dead Pixel Test by Ossibus Software from Google Play (only a 64kb app), launch it, then tap once to get to "pure" white. Post a picture (not a screenshot) of the tablet at that point.
EDIT: I've noticed that the xda app does have a yellow tint, but doing the dead pixel test reveals a pure white. This could just be xda.

yes, its a lottery. i compared 4 units now, all had different (from bad to worse) whites and contrast setting that effect the scroll blur, overall sharpness and black levels. there's definitely green push somewhere that comes of as yellow tinted screen overall depending on other settings of that particular screen or page you're viewing etc. keep on exchanging or wait for kernels with color control if they ever come that is.

and never go by any review which provide any screen tests and data. they were victims of the lottery too.

Well, I've got an HTC Desire, and after every reboot, the display gets horribly yellow. Though, turning screen off and on resolves it. Thing is, displays differ from device to device. A friend has a SGS3 with overly cold display, the kind that made my eyse stare at it all the time
Then I look back at my Desire, and it looks yellow. But it goes off after a little time(the yellowish look).
What you should try is to lookat your N7 for longer periods of time, and you'll get accustomed to it

Perfect whites here.

Just wait. Custom kernels will allow you to adjust all of this. With my nexus 4 the colors were not ideal for me, flashed a kernel and choose from the many options of color settings. There will be something for everyone, no matter what colors you prefer.

we don't know that yet. nexus 4 color adjustments on kernel level were possible due to the exposed color controls. somebody needs to confirm if it's even an option with this device.

Correct. Even iPad 4s suffer from screen issues. Just Google "ipad 4 yellow screen" and "ipad 4 backlight bleed".

true, ipad screens is just another lottery.

Definitely different white than my original Nexus 7. First thing I did was open Kindle in both, because I wanted to compare font sharpness, and I was struck by 2013 Nexus 7 looking yellowish compared to original, and thought I much preferred the softer look of the white on the original. Now, however, after using the new 2013 model for 2 days, when I compare the two, the new one seems white and the old one seems pinkish! So I think perception changes with use and familiarity.
I had far more noticeable white balance issues with Galaxy S3, and there was also a noticeable difference in white balance between Galaxy Note GT-N7000 and the AT&T LTE version.

I can't get used to it -- I have really low tolerance for this stuff. Especially since my Nexus 4 screen has good whites, and I'm sometimes switching back and forth between the devices. Or the 3 monitors on my desk that have excellent whites. It's too jarring.

I won't even get started on AMOLED screens on my past Galaxies lol
Thinking back, my very first Nexus 4 had very pure whites. My current Nexus 4 is more yellow than that the first one. So for the Nexus 7 to appear yellow to my Nexus 4, it's got to be really bad.

Just to give an update...
I decided to order one from Amazon yesterday instead of exchanging the Staples one. I figured that buying from a different retailer would increase my chances of getting a different batch.
The old one from Staples was made in June 2013, while the new one from Amazon was made in July 2013.
Overall the screen looks much less yellow than my old one! So yes, LCD display lottery

Do all Nexus 7 have gray scale issue?

It starts to bother me like some of the texts on the websites are really hard to read. I was thinking to replace mine cuz mine also had screen separation and dimming/flicking issues. But I am seeing a lot of threads saying they actually got worse ones, so is it worth for me to send mine back or not? Do all the Nexus 7 have the same problem? Thx for help, guys.
If you're having a hard time reading then replace it. I bought a N7 for my gf (mine is a c60, hers c70) and my screen is slightly washed out compared to hers but nowhere near the level of not being able to read stuff.
I don't think a replacement will help with the washed out colors, white saturation, unclear small text, etc.
I've had four Nexus 7s, they have all had the same issues. I'm hoping this is something Google can fix with an update.
Mine doesn't have any screen issues just that stupid speaker...

It's possible you may just not notice it. I suspect if you visit this page you may have a hard time seeing any boxes after 249 or 250. I'm not certain, but I think this is what is leading to some small text on white backgrounds to be a bit distorted.
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php
Honestly I think at least some complaints about the screen come from people who aren't used to properly adjusted neutral displays, which IPS panels typically are.
I noticed my N7 looked less saturated compared to my G2 but is quite similar to my calibrated IPS monitor and my calibrated HDTV.
Not saying there aren't legitament issues out there, but it might not be as common as these forums make it look

There seems to be something wrong with the greens and yellows to me. They look very pastel. Comparing this to every tablet I own, Nook Color, Touch Pad, iPad 3, the Nexus 7 those two colors look more faded, other colors seem fine though.
Thx for the responses, guys. Well I don't expect too much about the display cuz overall that's already good enough for the bucks... I used a few of Samsung and apple devices, those displays are comfortable & sharp...but Asus........, I'm just a little bit disappointed about this one Guess I'll just hang on and see if I can get used to it otherwise just send it back to Google.

Are there any non yellow N7 3g screens out there

I have had a 16gb N7 for several months and have just purchased a 32gb 3g N7
The screen on the new tablet has a distinctive yellow tint and is lacking in definition.
I have read around these forums about yellow/blue tints but was wondering if newer models are now all emerging as yellow or whether or not it is still a lottery.
I would especially like to hear from other 3g owners as to their experiences
Cheers
Baz
I have attached a picture of both tablets side by side running at the same brightness, the picture does not show the tint very well but clearly shows the definition issues
Release day 3g here and it's not yellow. The thing seems a hell of a lot better than my old 16g which I got a refund on due to screen lift.
Mine is definitely NOT yellow.
Looks like it's RMA time.
My 16gb looks so crisp compared to my 3g.
Mine is having same yellow tint...do i need to get it replaced or it's a common issue with 3G one?

I had the same problem with my iPhone and Apple's reply was that they use different manufacturers so some times things vary from one manufacturer to another and there's nothing they can do since there's nothing really wrong with the device. I'm sure it's the same time case with Google.

This is what I am trying to ascertain, I have tried to accept it they way it is but every time I use it the colours look too yellowy and bloom. I have compared to my N4 & old N7 and the difference is like night and day.
Mine looks pretty good. The colours are softer than my Galaxy Nexus but that is to be expected because Super AMOLED tends towards the blues and has overblown colour contrast.
My 3G is certainly yellow when put alongside my original N7 16GB. The screen seems to lack the 'bite' of the older device.
I've posted a seperate thread trying to find out if the newer non-3G 32GBs have the same problem. I may return and opt for a 32GB with a MiFi.
Just got my replacement from google, not yellow this time....but has one stuck pixel.
Trying dead pixel apps in the hope it will resolve.
I have an N7 3G I ordered on release day and it has no screens issues at all (no yellow tint or lifting).
RMA number 2:crying:

[Q] My Nexus 7 has washed out colors!

I bought a Nexus 7 yesterday. But i the colors are washed out.
Should i return it or wait for the screen to warm up, as many tell me to do?
I have the same situation. I do believe it's a software issue. Don't know how to fix it though.

If you are rooted, you can download the TricksterMOD application and under Specifics, turn off Smart Dimmer. This might help.

It is just a characteristic of the LCD panel I think.
I've had AMOLED and SAMOLED devices for the past ~4'ish years, so it was a bit jarring to see the washed out colors on the N7. When I compare it side by side to my Galaxy Nexus, it is really surprising the difference in colors.
The 7's screen also appears to be "warm" compared to the GNex which is more "cool".

Slight pink hue.

I have noticed my unit has a slight pink hue. When tilting device vertically I can see it disappears and its only visible when looking straight on the screen.
I am not used to AMOLED displays, last I used was Galaxy S2 is this a common issue or maybe not an issue?

Switch to sRGB aswel as the out of the box settings look like a HD Cartoon
I don't think it's a face reflection. I have tried sRGB but its way too washed for my liking.

My display is warmer/yellower than I expected straight on (not as much from an angle) - I thought they figured this stuff out by now?
When I turn on sRGB mode it makes it less yellow but too washed out and it doesn't seem to stick after reboot. Anyone?
Put it this way, whites on mine definitely do not look pure white like some reviews have said. I hate how screens can differ....

Yes sounds like mine. I called Google and they said if I want I can have another sent to me (they would put a hold/authorization charge on my account) and then I send the original back when received. Then the hold/charge is dropped. I told them I'd think about it.
Any chance the warmness will change/look more normal over time or no? I'm pretty positive that it is actually more yellow than it is supposed to be compared to "normal" ones, so don't second guess yourself if you think it is. I've had this issue so many times in the past with phones....

I've just read online the 5x has had massive issues with yellow screens. Google is replacing them so I'm definitely going to pop into CPW and raise the issue with them. When holding my phone next to my old HTC one m7 its clearly very yellow, which can't be right!

Every amoled I have has had this to a certain extent or another. My GS6 edge, my Moto Maxx (international version of the turbo).. It's something I have grown use to on amoled displays. I can see it in all of them, even if it's slight. Some people just do not see it or notice it for whatever reason.
I have a felling that all phones will have this "issue".
I had mine against Galaxy S6 edge plus and it seemed that mine has a better colours etc. But it was on the first day and I didn't notice pink/yellow hue so wasn't looking for it in Samsung device.
Regarding CPW exchange stock. I have ordered it this morning in store and got a text it has been despatched so should have it tomorrow.

I was just going to ask this - for the people who are saying the screen is great and whites are really white, etc...I mean they can't really be seeing what we are seeing right? It's not awful or terrible but it is definitely noticeable slightly yellowish/warm to me, especially compared to my LCD G3 screen and an iPhone 5 screen.
Do you really think all AMOLEDs are slightly yellow/warm? I can't let myself believe that but at the same time I haven't had an AMOLED in a while so it's hard for me to decide in my mind...

I was talking more about the pinkish hue. Amoled whites have always sucked. lol They are never white but always have a tint to them. With the nexus s it was a blueish tint, with later devices like the GS6, Turbo etc... it's a pinkish tint.. I mean if you just do a search of Insert_any_device_name_that_uses_amoled_screens_here and "pink tint" or "blue tint" or "purple tint" there will be at least one thread or something about it online for every single device.. lol I think some people's eyes aren't as sensitive to it so it's not as noticeable to them

Well I consider mine more yellow than pinkish, and also goes away when you tilt it - but I'm sure everyone sees the temperature slightly different.
I know there are always variations of screens but knowing that there PROBABLY is a much more balanced/correct version of the display out there is an awful feeling - the thought of having to get a second one and the second one will possibly suck too is just the worst (first world problems).
It also sucks that these aren't in local stores to go in and compare the display to.
Fwiw, mines the exact same way. There's a small degree of head-on angle that goes yellow-whites instead of bluish-whites.
Putting it side-by-side with my Turbo, its still a lot less yellow and I never had an issue with the Turbo screen.

Have you got yellow screen tint?

Hey guys, I've recently noticed my nexus 6p has a very warm/yellow feel to it when compared to other devices such as my old HTC one m7!
I did some reading and apparently the nexus 5x has had a massive problem with "yellow screens".
Now am I just being naive as I've never had an AMOLED display before or is there likely to be something wrong?
Also, is it likely to be software related as its affected both the 5x and 6p?
Thanks
Mine does not have a yellow tint, not sure about if it is software.
I am coming from Oneplus One. After two days with 6p it does have yellow whites and a bit of pinkish hue when looking straight at it, when tilting it disappears (pink).
Looking back at Oneplus One feels too blue on the other hand

It's just the way the screen is calibrated. This will be adjustable later on in development I'm sure.
yea, its how the screen is calibrated. i compared it to my oneplus and the oneplus has a more white color, though a slight blueish tint. the nexus 6p has a more yellow screen.
Loose Part(s) When Tapping on Screen?
Yes. If they don't tweak it, then surely the community will.
On another hand, does anyone have a hollow/loose sound when tapping on the top right quarter of the screen? The sound reminds me of a loose ceramic buttons on a Nexus 5. It feels as if it's behind the screen just right of the speaker but sounds as if it's out the side.
Could be the adhesive for attaching the screen... If the yellow goes away after a day or two the adhesive needed to cure. It's happened with other devices
Put it side by side with my Nexus 6. Apparently the Nexus 6 screen is super yellow, never noticed. The 6P is MUCH whiter. Looks great.
Ask Google if you should return it. I've seen some complains around about yellowish screens. During the reviews one thing that was pointed out was precisely the opposite, with the 6P having a much cooler screen than the 5X, way more to the blue (cool) than to the warm (yellow) whites.
A bit strange you find the opposite.

Pink not Yellow
Mine's got a pinkish hue at certain angles, but no yellow. Have come from an S4, which has a much whiter screen. Changing to sRGB gets rid of the pink hue but gives ghastly washed out colours instead. Guess we have to wait for some kind of tuning facility.
I'm very disappointed in the screen calibration. The 6p has the same pixel dimensions as the Nexus 6 with the 6p having slightly more pixels per inch. When I play a youtube video side by side the 6p looks terrible!!! Especially since during the keynote they said they worked really hard to get the colors right on the screen calibration. I hope this can be fixed with a software update. I might be returning mine.

I too have the pinkish hue but I have come use to this on amoled displays. Every single phone I've had with a amoled display has had a pinkish hue. So either I'm very unlucky and keep getting device after device with a bad screen, or I have eagle eyes and I can see it when others can't.. haha Some times people do not notice it. I think it really has to do with your eyes. If they are sensitive enough to see it. For example. I work for Swappa and me and my co-worker both had the international version of the Droid Turbo(The Moto Maxx) I had asked him if he noticed a pink hue, he said no he did not.. When we met in person I saw it right away. While it wasn't as pronounced as it was on my device, it was still there. He didn't see it.
Last night I was chatting with Derek Ross from phandroid and I showed him a pic of my 6p screen.. I saw pink..he said it looked fine to him.. lol I still might order a replacement just to see if the next one is like that.

I am using a screen filter app now and it seems to fix the screen so I'm pretty happy!

I bought it from Carphonewarehouse (UK) so I may speak to them!

Store bought or online?
I'd go there indeed. If they have stock they should replace it.
Saw below you tuned it with an app (which?) but that may not be a permanent solution.

It's called MOBTI screen filter. I just put it to like 15-19% opacity and only had the blue halfway, a tiny bit or red, no green and it feels a lot better. Obvs its a temp solution, but it shows it can be fixed by software changes!
