[Q] Phone doesn't go into deep sleep + wifi always stays on - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is very annoying, I have spent the whole morning trying to find a solution for this issue. The battery runs out already fast as it is, and now the phone is not
Battery drained about 20% at night by itself. Currently draining about 1-2% per 5 minutes when idle. What do I do? I have looked on various different threads for a solution, but did not find anything to fix this issue.
How do I fix this?
Thanks, in advance.

Also some details.
I had my phone at home, I prefer the phone to use WiFi networks when syncing and updating, but to have phone turn them automatically off when not using them, that is when the phone is locked and not syncing and updating anything. But apparently it doesn't do that, it has WiFi on at all times for some reason. And I don't know if its related to WiFi, it doesn't appear to go to "deep sleep"

For me, it was the last Google Maps update. Try to disable "Reporting Location" and "Location History" under Location settings on Google Settings app(the one with the green icon). I had around 25% drain over night and half of it came from this.
Try it and see if this can help you.
:fingers-crossed:

Like above say, disable location, especially if you keep wifi on.
Leaving wifi on while sleeping itself is not good for our health anyway, so if you have data switch to 2G, its at least enough to keep internet messages coming while saving battery. And if its wifi wise, apply pm.sleep_mode=1 in your build.prop. AND, scroll up a little, wifi_supplicant_can_interval(something like that, from its SHOULD BE 15 change to 300-600).
Disable unused apps and use greenify.

Thank you for the answer, but sadly it didn't seem to do it. My WiFi is still always on, even though I have it set to turn off when phone is sleeping at WiFi advanced settings.
Although the phone entered deep sleep mode when I manually turned WiFi off, but I'm not sure if that was the case.

I understand, but I forgot to do so, I actually have an app that turns on air plane mode at certain time. But that still doesn't fix the issue that the phone doesn't enter sleep mode with WiFi on and doesn't turn it off, even though it's set to do so.
Also I did not quite understand what you were telling me there, as I got the phone last week and it's my first android phone. The app you suggested could cut it, but that means that whenever there will be an auto check for news sequence I will be downloading it with mobile data? Is there an app that could cause this?

I was about to update on this, but I just got notification about 4.3 update.
I will update this post, if this problem still exists.
UPDATE : Of course, still the problem persists, Phone goes to sleep when I have Wi-Fi turned off. But when on, even though I have it set to turn off during sleep mode, it keeps the phone wake and drains the battery.

How is it related to my router exactly? My iPod disconnects from Wi-Fi no problem.
Thank you for trying though.

I had left my phone this night with Wi-Fi off, but mobile data and 3G was on, Lost 7% in 7Hours from 47%. Does this seem okay, or a little bit too much? By the time I answered 2 emails and made 1 short phonecall and checked on battery logs from 2 different apps, and changed my wallpaper, battery has dropped to 33%. I'm not proud.

The answer to your problem is JuiceDefender Ultimate, available from Play Store.

Unfortunately this is normal, the battery life is not the best feature of nexus 4. How many screen on time hours do you get averagely?

This fixed the Wifi always on issue for me.
Turn WiFi on: Settings, WiFi, Menu (3 dots upper right hand corner), advanced, uncheck scanning always on.
Hope this helps.

Insane Battery Drain...Please help

This is my first android phone and I'm wondering if I am doing anything wrong. Yesterday I charged my phone and it was at 83%. I unplugged the phone and went to sleep, when I woke up this morning the battery was completely drained.
This happens a lot. Even if I am not doing anything it still drains like crazy. I just text, make some phone calls and it barely makes it through the day. I don't play any games, no gps, no Bluetooth or anything. With my plan, I don't have a data connection so I can't connect to 3g/4g so that shouldn't drain anything.
What could I be doing wrong? When I'm done using the phone I tap the power button on top, the screen goes black - to sleep I presume and I put it away. I had an iphone before this and I did exactly the same thing and the battery lasted for 3-4 days on one charge.
Whenever I see what's using up the battery, the display tops the list. The display is using up 75-80% of the battery. If the phone is asleep for most of the time why is the display using up that much battery? Am I not putting the phone to sleep correctly?

If you cant connect to 3g/4g, you should turn it off in settings. Otherwise, Your phone will constantly look for a signal, draining your battery.
Battery life is all relative. Every single person will experience different battery life. The apps you have installed, the amount of time you spend on it and the time you spend on/in each app, distance from cell towers, distance from Wi-Fi sources, settings you have for every app and things like sync and what not.
The first thing to check is if your phone is being affected by the init or suspend bugs. The good news is the former has an easy fix, and the latter can be temporarily fixed by a reboot.
First, download & install Watchdog Lite from the market. Then open its preferences and check "include phone processes," "monitor phone processes," and "display all phone processes." Then just use your phone as normal. It may take a while before you get an alert from Watchdog (and maybe you never will and it ends up you have a different problem). But if you do, note the process that is the culprit.
If it is the init process, go to settings>applications>development> check "usb debugging."
If it is the suspend process, reboot the phone. It should keep it from happening again for a while.
I know the second answer isn't really an answer, but so far it's all we've got for that problem. There is more information on the 2 problems in these threads:

Suspend:

Good luck...I had both of the problems and my phone didn't last to dinner time. Now I get better battery life than the iphone 3GS I had before this...about a day and a half of moderate use.
EDIT: also you'll probably want to go to settings>wireless & networks>uncheck "mobile network" since you don't have a data plan. No reason to have that on since you don't have a data plan.

I installed this using the Moderate setting, and then selected those options as recommended in preferences.
Does Watchdog use a lot of system resources when running in this manner? Will it cause the battery to drain noticeably faster?

Completely unnoticeable, IMO.
I installed watchdog lite and I have had couple of alerts. I got suspended couple of times and I also got Android system once.
Android system - 50.1%
Foreground
Suspend - 54.4%
Linux Process
I turned off the data usage from the settings and it did help save battery. The display is not using so much battery life anymore. It went from using 70% to 35%.
Edit: Battsatt reported that the battery was at 93%. When I saw the two alerts above I rebooted the phone and Battsatt now starts reporting the phone is fully charged.
Make sure the GPS is turned Off, too...
All these answers and the easy ones were not mentioned..
Make sure you shut your AUTO SYNC off...
Make sure you lower your brightneess....
Make sure you turn off GPS(was stated above me)
Turn off your wifi if you are not using it.. make sure you are not transmitting your hot spot stuff...

You just summed it up right there. You are experiencing the 'suspend' issue, period. There is no app you can install to fix it. There is no app you can uninstall to fix it. There is no setting you can adjust to fix it. There is no fix for the 'suspend' issue, literally.
I started the following thread in an attempt to consolidate posts and hopefully work toward flushing out what the real issue is...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872839
This is a real, legitimate issue with Android 2.2.x Froyo. As I linked in my post, this is Issue # 11126 on Google Code...
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11126
If there was an app or setting that fixed the 'suspend' issue, we wouldn't even be discussing this right now. There are fixes/workarounds for a lot of things, but right now, the 'suspend' process issue truly is a mystery. No one, not a single person has yet to post, "this is the cause of the issue," let alone a fix for it.
I wish you had a fix man, I really do. My fiancee experiences this and there's only one way she's found to sort of workaround it, sort of - she reboots her phone every morning. This seems to keep it at bay, at least more so than when she doesn't reboot each morning, once she takes it off the charger. She still gets it though and she's just used to looking for Watchdog and checking her processes now.
This thread could go on and on forever but it comes down to this:
- The MT4G does not have insane battery drain and will give you about 12 hours of life, under normal>medium usage. If your battery is draining insanely quickly AND if you're seeing the suspend process jacked up so high, then there.is.no.fix.yet.
There might be a ton of other replies after this about uninstall this, install that, change this, don't use widgets, use widgets, etc. Those attempts will be futile.

Battery tip for people with bad battery life.

I've had bad battery life since I bought this phone on release day. I would get no more than 1.5-2 hours screen on time. The battery wouldn't last more than 12 hours. I've been messing around with it since then but still had bad battery life up until the last few days. Now I get 3.5-4 hours screen on time and I'm a moderate user.
Here is what I did:
1. Go to Google maps and then go to settings and untick anything that is ticked then click on "location reporting" and set it to do not update your location.
2. Go into the phone settings>location services and untick everything. When you want to use maps just turn on gps.
3. Get the app "battery calibration". First charge your phone to 100% and keep the charger plugged in and then go to the app and Press calibrate. Then use your phone till the battery is dead (turns off) and plug the charger in and let it charge to 100% while it is off.
Turn it on and then use it till the battery is dead again and charge while off to 100%.
I'm not saying this is guaranteed to work for you but it has for me.
You know my problem is I did that and when on Jb lib battery drain like crazy.Back on ICS no problem with battery can you explain that why on ICS calibration is not needed ???

First two items I agree on. GPS uses up a lot of battery, though from personal experience, it didn't dent my battery too much anyway as long as I don't have running apps using it.
But the last point. I believe those battery calibrations are actually useless. There was some article from the android team describing why.
The 2nd and 3rd are completely useless.
People who use gps know that even if you tick those location services, it only gets enabled when an app requires gps. Thua, battery is only lost if you use loads of navigation services. Unchecking those won't do any good.
Battery Caliberation is just what you can call the perfect reading that is shown on your status bar. Ultimately, whether you caliberate or not, battery gets charged upto 100% only. It won't surely exceed that.

A better idea:
Disable auto sync for accounts
Disable GPS (and wifi gps)
Disable auto backup of Gmail account
Set wifi sleep policy to “when plugged in”
Disable motion
Check your apps settings and disable useless background sync
Setup a static IP via your router.
I had issues with Chrome Sync - when enabled it prevented phone from going into deep sleep. So if you use Chrome and struggle with battery life this is one more thing to look at ...
Official Facebook app uses a lot of power and waking device for many times. Use browser for facebook or alternatives...You will see the diference !

good list id like to add:
freeze unused apps/battery hogs if used sparringly (with titanium backup)
set wifi to always on, switch off manually when not in use
firewall apps that dont require internet
I agree on the Facebook app. I will charge my phone to full, reboot it, and then let it sit overnight without using any apps and it will be one of my top processes in better battery stats. I really like using facebook simply for the picture and phone number syncing. I guess I could always go back to haxsync. On my Galaxy Nexus since I can't use facebook app to sync I just use mobile page and it definitely is better on battery life.
I've been trying to improve my battery life on 4.1.1 LIB as if I leave it on Wifi overnight with no use after reboot and full charge I'll see Deep Sleep at maybe 90% if I'm lucky. I'm losing almost a full hour of sleep time over the course of 7-8 hours. I think Facebook is part of it, also it seems to be worse when I use the S3's built in alarms.
Go into Settings -> Location and disable everything? You mean that we should disable:
1) Use wireless networks (location determined by wi-fi and/or mobile networks). I really don't see how this saves battery.
2) Use GPS satellites. This uses up battery ONLY when an app requires GPS (and when the icon shows).
3) Use sensor aiding. See above.
4) Location and Google Search. (only used to get your location when you're connected to GPS and/or wifi/mobile network).
I really don't see how this saves battery.
On a side note, one might want to freeze unwanted apps, not use too many live wallpapers, sync only when needed, and get rid of unwanted widgets. THAT might help.
Better tip. Use your phone with everything turned on as it was designed like I do and get 4 hours + screen on time, and 1 to 2 days useage depending on how much it's used.. simples...
I really don't see the point of buying a phone like this and turning everything off!
Google now won't work properly with all the location stuff switched off.
I always get through the day with everything turned on, in use power saving at work and switch off wifi that's it.
If the battery runs down have a back up waiting, galaxy s3 owners are always going on about it being good that our phone has a removable battery and iphone doesn't but there are still many people not happy that their battery runs down quick!

Yes that's true but this is not for everyone. I don't use Google now and why should I use wireless networks when there is a built in GPS.

You're only turning of location services. Why does the phone need to know where you are 24/7? Just turn it on when you need to use maps or location. Not hard.
My car was designed to be driven, does that mean it should be left on while I'm not using it? Think about that.

Wi-Fi Not Allowing Deep Sleep

So I posted this in a different thread but figured I would post it here to see if anyone could duplicate my findings. I have a Note3 from T-Mobile and for whatever reason leaving the Wi-Fi on will not allow the phone to go into deep sleep mode. I noticed when I was down to 40% battery after 10 hours with only one hour of screen on time. After running some tests I had only 2 minutes of deep sleep those entire 10 hours (tested using BetterBatteryStats) I tried setting "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to Never and unchecking "Always allow scanning" under advanced network settings but neither of them fix the issue. In fact, after several tests I concluded that setting never for "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" wasn't even functioning as my access points still showed the client connected while the phone was asleep.
Can anyone else confirm this issue is actually a bug and not just my phone being defective?
Here's my original post on the topic regarding how I found the problem and what I have tested so far:
OK so after only 2 days of owning this phone (got it late Monday night, the T-Mobile variant) I finally figured out why I'm getting such bad battery, and I suspect the same thing may be happening for the other people in this thread. Hopefully this information helps at least one person.
My battery stats was almost identical to all the other users in this thread that had bad battery, I would get barely around 10-12 hours on the phone with less than 2 hours of screen on time. After using multiple apps to track down the issue I finally got what it was.
Wireless. Yes, wireless was my cause. But the thing is Wi-Fi didn't show up at all in any of the battery apps so I assumed it was a non issue. I've had other phones and have always kept the wireless turned on the entire time without problems. The basic problem is not that Wi-Fi is using power itself but it's that by default the phone cannot enter deep sleep while connected to Wi-Fi. This is why trying to use apps like BetterBatteryStats will lead you nowhere initially (though they were useful in finding out what was causing the issue) You can discover this by turning on Wi-Fi and connecting the phone to a charger, then disconnecting it so your BBS information will reset. Then power off the screen and power it back on after 10 minutes. You'll notice in the other section that deep sleep will have less than a minute time while awake probably has close to 9 minutes, if not more. This is with everything else turned off, almost no apps, and no special Samsung stuff enabled.
Under Apps > Settings > Wi-Fi > Menu > Advanced there are two options that should help this: "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" and "Always allow scanning" I set the "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to Never and unchecked Always allow scanning and rebooted the phone. And low and behold...nothing. Yes, these options don't work (at least not to fix this problem) The phone still won't enter deep sleep mode while the wireless is enabled. Based on my company's wireless devices I can see that even with the screen off for well over 10 minutes it still shows connected as a client meaning the wireless is not turning off properly while it's in sleep mode. Or perhaps it can't go into sleep mode because the wireless is on which stops it from going into sleep mode and turning off the wireless. My guess is that it's a Samsung bug.
The reason why there's so many people here to get good battery usage is because they're either used to turning Wi-Fi on only when needed and keeping it off. You'll also not notice it if you have more than 6 hours of screen on time because you could easily assume that it would make sense that you phone would only last 10 hours total with that much screen on time, even though it should have technically lasted 20+ hours with only 6 hours of screen on time if the phone could have entered deep sleep.
So what's the real fix for this? Unless it's by design my belief is that it's a bug and won't be fixed until Samsung/T-mobile notices. I can't test to see if the same thing happens on other carriers so if someone feels like testing this theory out it would help.
For now, I guess we're just left to manually turning Wi-Fi on only when needed and leaving it off in all other cases. For those that have the T-mobile variant, make sure you also go into Settings > General > Backup and reset > Collect diagnostics and uncheck the "Allow Diagnostics" as that will probably be the highest offender of Partial Wakelocks (it'll show up as com.carrieriq.tmobile.wakelock or System Manager Application)
If anyone wants more information on my testing let me know!

That's because the 'Keep WiFi during sleep: Never" setting only disconnects, it doesn't shut down the WiFi radio.
You're going to have to use a manager (Like Deep Sleep Battery Saver).
Or just hit the toggle yourself... If you're going to keep it disconnected in sleep anyway, just swipe down the notification bar and hit the bloody toggle.

The problem is that it doesn't disconnect, the access point 100% shows it is connected and transferring data every now and then. But the real issue isn't weather it disconnects or not but it's the fact that Wi-Fi will not allow the phone to go into deep sleep mode. For now I am fine with switching Wi-Fi off and on as needed, but with no other phone have I needed to do this before and definitely seems like a bug.
But regardless, what I'm trying to figure out if this is a legit bug that I should submit to Samsung/T-mobile or if it's just my phone and I should ask for a replacement. If anyone has BetterBatteryStats and could test this with their Note3 that would help.
My stupid phone has just started this same issue!!!! Freaking annoying, after only 8 hrs from 100% charged state, the battery is at 46% with only 26 mins screen ontime, I checked out that the phone never goes into deep sleep. What is going on and what can be causing this? Did you manage to resolve your issue?
PS I checked out wakelock detector but doesn't tell me a thing, as what program is keeping the phone awake all the time. Starting to hate this phone and miss my S3
What is your GPS accuracy setting set to? GPS, Wifi or Networks? Try setting it to GPS only.

Can anyone else confirm this issue is actually a bug and not just my phone being defective?

Well, your issue looks pretty similar to mine, which I solved with this Xposed mod (you could give it a try if you're on KitKat): http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-wi-fi-deep-sleep-t2752947. I was experiencing that even when "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" is set to Never, Wi-Fi still was awake most of the time according to battery stats.

Wifi prevents deep sleep

I've had my V20 for just over 2 weeks now and found something strange regarding wifi.
Normally I set my phone to keep wifi on, even when asleep because cell reception at my office is spotty and staying connected to WiFi used to keep the battery taking a hit during the day. But, I left my phone off the charger overnight last week and saw my battery drop 11% in just under 8 hours. That seemed higher than my old phones so I installed BBS to see if anything was misbehaving when I'm not using my phone. To my surprise, no apps were causing a large number or long duration wake locks but my phone was only in deep sleep for 25% of the night when left off the charger.
While I was testing different configurations I left wifi on, but set it to disable when sleeping and sure enough, my phone stayed asleep for 80%+ and the 8 hour drain dropped to 5%. I havent been able to find any other combinations of settings that get the phone to sleep.
Has anyone else seen thing on their V20?
Only 4% drop at worst over night with Wi-Fi left on here.
Hey shwnr11, thanks for the reply. Just to clarify, you had the setting "Keep wifi on during sleep" set to always as well?
I always have wifi on at home, but unless I set wifi to turn off when sleeping, I see the drain.

Does this help....see pic
Yep, that's the one. Different wording on the Verizon V20, but same idea. Guess I've still got some searching on my end!

Could also be that I'm on a T-Mobile V20.

AOSPA Battery Drain

Hello, just yesterday i installed AOSPA on my P8 Lite ALE-21, and i realized the battery drains too fast. I had like 45% at the morning and when i was in school (not even 4 hours passed) my phone ran out of battery.. Someone advised me to disable 2 cores, but won't that slow my perfomance?
P.S: I installed Greenify, it won't help..

Walk us through a daily use of your phone: what do you leave turned on while in school (BT, GPS, WIFI, Mobile Data, etc)?
If you have your phone rooted, try installing BetterBatteryStats, if not, WakelockerLite and see if there any wakelocks active while your phone is in idle.
Also, make sure the "Wifi Scanning" and "Bluetooth Scanning" are OFF in Settings->Search-> type "Wifi" -> Scroll down to Wi_FI Scanning"
Changing that and Settings->Wifi-> Gear icon -> "Keep Wi_Fi on during sleep" to "only when it's plugged in" helped me, alonside Greenify.
We will have to wait until all these problems are fixed

If I have my phone in idle, even with the Wifi turned on, i don't have that much battery drop.
Something is preventing your phone of going into deepsleep. Which apps do you Greenify? Do you have "Automated Hibernation" turned on?

I don't know, can you tell me how i can check that?
EDIT: Yes, in Greenify automated hibernation is checked.
I Greenify almost every app except social media, cause i want to get notifications

Well, social media apps tend to drain battery running in the background so I always Greenify them.
From time to time I open the app instead of waiting on a notification but it's a choice I made.
Try turning off things like Ambient Display, head to Settings > Display and select to turn off Ambient Display (which means no app notifications will cause the screen to wake).
Also, if you're using apps that require your location, you can head to Settings > Location > Mode and select “Battery saving” (where Wi-Fi and mobile networks are used to determine your location) over “High accuracy” (where GPS is also used).
You should wait of further updates to the ROM, since there are issues regarding the battery drain.
