[Q] Hybrid Tablet/Laptop Ideas - Windows 8 General

I've finally given up on trying to create some type of hybrid tablet/laptop with my Nexus 10.
Now, I'm looking for ideas on a Windows 8-based hybrid tablet/laptop that will give me the ability to detach the screen, if needed for the tablet feel, but still retain the standard laptop function.
I know that this description is very general, but I'm hopeful that if I get a few ideas here, it will help me focus better. My price point is <U.S. $1,000 if possible.
Any ideas to get me started would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
[Mods: If this is not the appropriate section for my question, feel free to move.]

Well, the Surface Pro would be an obvious candidate, but for the price. I assume you want x86... sub-1k x86 tablets are mostly going to be Atom CPUs, which are... "competitive with ARM chips such as you'd find in the iPad" is probably the nicest way to put it, although that's true on both perf and power consumption (higher-end CPUs will be much worse on power usage and cooling need).
If you've got a Microsoft Store nearby, that's a good place to go and see the various tablet models, try them out a bit, and (if you'd like) buy one knowing that it's free of the garbage that OEMs usually dump on their systems. If you don't have such a store, there's always options like Best Buy or Fry's or similar.

Hello.
Thanks for the plentiful info!
I've read about the Surface Pro. As with anything, lots of pro's & con's. I've also been looking at Lenovo, ASUS, & Dell.
Frankly, you've got me with the ARM &CPU data.
I totally understand your rationale for visiting stores &taking a test drive.
Sorry I wasn't able to provide more substantial feedback but the hybrid world is totally new to me!
Thanks.
P.S. I'm planning on selling my Nexus 10 (less than year old).
Any ideas on conduits to sell?

Samsung and Asus both make windows 8 tablets with a keyboard dock that is similar to the Asus Transformer. With the dock it basically becomes a full fledged laptop. And at least one of the docks has an extra battery and storage in it to make your device last even longer. Both are under $1k. No need to build your own

both are also atom == low performance. Although that might suffice for the OP.
Upside to atom, long battery life, cheaper, tablet can be slimmer and lighter plus it doesn't get so warm so no fans.

Bingo! You nailed it. I'll take a look at all of the ones you mentioned.
Curious question though. Why did you separate the Transformer from the other two?

Can you suggest one or two Samsung & ASUS models. I've been using Google, etc but just can't find the ones with detachable keyboards. Tx

I'm actually in the same situation. Nexus 10 lacking any functionality as a tablet worth anything more than watching youtube videos.
I picked up (still waiting for it to arrive) the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2. Although it's atom, I really don't need to use it for anything that needs an i5. I'll be using it for PDF and eBook annotation, taking notes with the awesome Wacom digitizer, and word processing. Also the stuff I used my Nexus 10 for.
I got it brand new for 475. It has a bluetooth keyboard dock of sorts, it just isn't quite the dock like the Samsung Ativ is. Honestly, it'll do what I'm looking for it to do. The people complaining of performance are the ones buying it with the expectation of it replacing their laptop or competing with the i5 processors. You're getting a lot more mobility and battery life with the atom tablets.
It all comes down to your needs. Do you need power for some power hungry legacy apps or gaming? Or do you need a companion to your PC/laptop for school or work for note taking and media consumption?

The hp envy x2 has an atom processor and is 11.6". The hp split x2 is an i3 hybrid with a 13.3" screen. This is, I think, is the best one you can go for right now.
And don't let the word "atom" fool you. I've written and published 2 apps using nothing but the envy x2 and visual studio. Most people don't give this device a fair chance. It is actually quite powerful.

Oh yes that is the one. Sorry got my specs a bit messed up. And yes the atoms will certainly do what you need. But don't expect too much multitasking. It will work fine one app at a time

Thanks much for your very informative review of the Lenovo. Will check it out.
Just so I don't lead anyone astray on my intended use. My current laptop is part of my home network, just as my Nexus is. I use it primarily to work on spreadsheets, (Word) documents, etc. I don't play games or listen to a lot of music on it. The Nexus actually does a better job when I watch videos or live TV from my cable provider! Hope this helps.
Oh, a screen larger than 11" would be nice.

Exchange My Nexus 7 for EEE Pad Transformer TF101- Is it worth?

Hey Guys,
I need some help here. So basically i have the all new Google Nexus 7 tablet which has just launched. So I am getting an offer to exchange my Nexus 7 for an ASUS EEE Pad Transformer TF101. I was considering switching but was not able to make the descsion, so i need help from you guys on whether switching/exchanging a Nexus 7 for a TF101 Transformer Is worth it? The Transformer has a Dual Core Tegra 2 while as the Nexus 7 has a Quad core Tegra 3. Other than that the Transformer seems better. It has a larger screen with slightly lower PPI, it has a 5 MP camer + front facing one too. It has 16GB internal + expandable storage(not sure if expandable). Build quality and battery life seems equal on both. So i want to know if the Tegra 2 is well performing on the TF101 and whether it can handle the latest games/apps and whether the TF101 lags?
Thanks all!
Do you get the keyboard or just the tablet?
The Asus Transformer is also worth taking a look coz its is bundled with features....
But finally it depends upon you that what are your needs as If you want to use it for hardcore gaming then obv. Transformer is the one to go with but if you want a pure Google experience and are GOOGLE FAN then you should stay with the Nexus 7 as it has the latest and coolest features....but in the end u r the 1 who has to make the decission as per ur needs... Happy googling

Even running at stock speed, my TF runs all the games I've played smoothly. ....But there are some newer games optimized for Tegra 3. BTW, I have both the TF and Nexus 7, and they're both awesome in their own way.

If it is new or a refurb and not coming from a private/owner seller, I say go for it. You can always buy another Nexus 7 when the price drops. If it is the owner, then maybe you could work out a temporary/trade/try it. If pre-owned does it have any problems. Maybe nothing is wrong and they are just feeling the urge ( you know, that desire for the latest toy). I have noticed that the price for the TF101 has gone up since I bought mine 7 months ago. I will probably buy the N7, due to the urge. But I had better wait for cooler weather. Just paid an electric bill that was over $300
after using a 7', the 10.01" will seem huge in comparison. I have the keyboard dock, it's cool, with the extra battery, USB & SD slot. But I rarely use it, the soft key pad is great.
Actually you should keep the Nexus coz it is new and latest tech by the Android Owner/Developer, so it is a must have tab fr Android geeks as Google has worked hard for putting all those features in such a low rate....and the second reason is that Transformer has become a bit old and isnt the latest technology although it is a good competetor but it is like an old Grand Father with less usability.
....also you will in Starting love the keyboard along but after some time you will see no use of the keyboard....also the keyboard dock after some time becom lose and while carrying both connected it slips(nt personal experience of dock)....well indeed make a good choice which suits you the best....

Even though the n7 is a Google device I will probably never buy any tablet smaller than the 10 inch. Same reason I will never buy a phone bigger than 5 inch. Just my two cents.
Sent from my Transformer using Tapatalk 2
It depends on your usage model. I have both the TF and N7, and ever since I got the N7 my TF has mostly stayed turned off. However, I don't plan to get rid of the TF either. I mainly use my tablets for browsing and watching downloaded videos. Browsing on the N7 is smooth and buttery, while on the TF it is reasonably quick but the occasional stutter happens more often and is therefore more irritating. The UI on the TF isn't as smooth, but in my experience apps work flawlessly. Videos, on the other hand, look better on the TF. It's not just the screen size, but the contrast seems better as well. The N7 is also easier to hold/handle due to it's small size.
Let me put it this way, if you primarily browse the web or stream most of your content (or love having the latest and greatest OS), stick with the N7. If you need lots of local storage (or are stuck with slow DSL), want to output content to a TV (I use mine to play emulator games with my PS3 controller), or want the optional convenience of the keyboard and the epic battery life that gives you, trade for the TF.
I would go ahead and probably swap a nexus 7 for an OG transformer.
Simple reason being...SD card support. They both got great screens but transformer is bigger at 10.1 inch. The difference between quad and dual core doesn't really bother me at this point in time. Both got 1 gig of ram also.
You can't really go wrong. I love my transformer still after almost a year. I've no intention of replacing it anytime soon.

I've got both and personally i would stick with the nexus. i really want to love the TF101, the keyboard hybrid is such a great idea but it's been a really frustrating experience - very often laggy as hell (press the recent apps key and wait 5 secs for it to respond!), too many bugs for a device that is now over a year old (crashed launcher, screen locking up, i still occasionally have the device randomly rebooting). the speakers and microphone are also awful, really poor quality.
The nexus really is the best android tablet on the market at the moment in terms of performance. but if screen size/storage space is important then maybe it's worth swapping - but i would consider another android tablet.
well the OG transformer has HDMi out while the nexus 7 doesnt

man, i'll gladly go with a Nexus 7 over my Transformer+dock.
i would rather want the smaller form factor. taking around the Transformer+dock just seems too much like a laptop to me, and without the laptop power.

As someone who owns an ipad3, could this be a replacement?

I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on this. It being a Nexus 7 forum I hope people aren't completely bias. I've had my iPad3 for about six months now, I love it, although lately Apples been rubbing me the wrong way. My biggest concern is the variety in apps.. I've spent so much money purchasing apps for iOS and now that I'm back on Android, I find myself having to either repurchase these apps or look for alternative apps similar to what iOS has. Could this be an alternative to my iPad? or is it more as a companion? Could I expect my Nexus 7 to replace my Kindle3 rather than my iPad? Also, are the amount of apps starting to pick up? I hope the variety is close to what iOS offers.
I already placed one on order so I guess theres no going back but would be nice to get some input from you guys, thanks.

I wouldn't say reading on the N7 is better because of the screen. The N7 has decent enough text, but it's still nowhere near the iPad 3, which simply has lovely, crisp, magazine-quality text.
I'd say the N7 wins as an ebook reader because its text is good enough, and it's smaller and lighter and so easier to use for longer reading sessions.
Like I said, I own and enjoy both, but there's really no comparing the screens.

I would say it is a worthy replacement. The Google play store has rly beefed up its selection and developers have realized they can no longer ignore android. Most ios apps are on Android I would say with few exceptions.
Also nexus seven is a joy to read on.

It is not a replacement, it is for a completely different target market and usage scenarios. Now if you settled for an iPad despite it being inappropriate for your use cases, then the N7 might be more suitable for you.

I had an hp touchpad running some form of Android but I didn't use it all that much, actually it wasn't until I bought my ipad where I actually found myself using a tablet more often. I'm trying to veer away from Apple.. Slowly but surely, hopefully this tablet helps.

In my case, I always try my apps before buying it, that means I would take my nexus 7, open chrome, go to google and type in search feild : ApplicationName Version(ex 1.5) apk then I download it and install. Yeah that is not cool for dev to 'crack' their apps but in my case, I test them and buy if I like

They're about the same speed, ipad 3 has a bit more polish. For general browsing ipad wins, but for reading the nexus 7 is better.
Honestly I don't see the point unless you're just tired of apple, but the nexus 7 apps are nothing compared to ipad apps.
Wait until October when the new smaller ipad is said to be announced, that way you'll have the same format factor as this but with all your apps.
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
I have both. And since my n7 has arrived, I barely touch my iPad. Form factor is just perfect. Speed is freaking good.
There are not so many tablet specific apps like the iPad, but you can test any purchased app for 15min. Then you can call a refund. And almost all apps for phones scale very well for the 7" size.
Offline voice dictation is simply outstanding. Great feature.
And the best? You don't need iTunes.

The number of apps are relatively similar now. All major apps and brand have both version. So it all ends with specialty and obscure apps that you can't live without.
Best, check your current iPad apps, and run down the list. simply google android store, and see if equivalent is available...probably half of them has free version.
if you have specific app question, I am sure somebody knows the equivalent if you post it here.
As of June:
it now has 600,000 apps in the Google Play Store. As well, the store is clearly hitting a brisk pace in adoption, with 1.5 billion downloads every month and 20 billion since Android began. Free apps are available in 190 countries, with paid apps in 132. The app and download counts stack up fairly well to Apple's own claims, although not universally: it's just short of the App Store's 650,000 apps, but Apple can still point to 30 billion total downloads. Google also hasn't said how many apps are explicitly tablet-friendly versus 225,000 iPad-oriented apps. Either way, Google can say that it has largely erased the app quantity deficit, and that's no mean feat.

I've been able to use my iPad 3 without once using iTunes. I mean, literally, mine has never been connected to a PC, and I haven't installed iTunes on any of my machines. Basically, I use iCloud for backup, use Kindle, Nook, and Play Books for ebooks, and installed an app to access Play Music. I don't buy/rent videos for tablets, so no need there.
It's entirely possible to buy and use an iPad without once touching iTunes. Just sayin'...

Size matter?

I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1.. I had the same issues with it as you did. Yes it's a big difference from the N7 but for me it made ALL the difference. Portrait mode is perfect to use and type on and landscape mode is perfect for web browsing.. 10.1 was just too bulky for me.. I always felt burdened by it like I was carrying around a computer monitor and not a convenient and productive piece of technology.
My Tab 10.1 now sits on the shelf as I wait for pershoot to pump out some new CM10 builds for it and I plan to just use it as a media center interface. Meanwhile me, my Nexus S and N7 are attached at the hip
I had a 10" HP Touchpad with CM9 that I really liked, but after using a friend's Nexus 7 for a little while, I decided to sell the Touchpad while they were still selling on eBay fora decent amount and buy a Nexus 7. I have had the Nexus for a couple weeks now and have found I use it a lot more than I did the Touchpad since it is a lot more convenient. Also, now when I pick up my wife's iPad, it feels HUGE and unwieldy!
I have not missed the larger screen at all.

I like the 7" size, as it seems to be a happy medium. It's easy to hold with one hand and read. Its comfortable in landscape mode and much more comfortable for playing games. It's easy to carry and to toss into my purse or a pack. I don't watch movies much but it's a nice personal size for viewing. My other device is a HP touchpad and it feels large and heavy in comparison.

Sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB WiFi for the money to buy an 8GB Nexus7, and didn't regret it for an instant. It's actually portable, it's ridiculously fast, and while it has a smaller screen than the GTab10.1, it's the same resolution, which results in a much more crisp picture.
We now have two Nexus7's in the house: an 8GB and a 16GB. We'll be adding a 32GB as soon as they start showing up for purchase.

I liked the feel. Just wanted an opinion from someone who spent more than 5 minutes with one. Someone who actually made the switch and has some experience related to the concerns in my description.

Nevermind the GTAB 10.1 had a bug in portrait mode that caused it to lag like hell.. Even their ICS update had it. Samsung really screwed the pooch with the tab 10.1.. It seriously under performed considering it was a dual core tegra 2.

Sold mine as soon as the n7 came out. Hadn't made it to ICS yet. I hear they run VERY well on JellyBean though, especially with all that TouchWiz crap stripped away
I was a hardcore 10 clincher, had four tablets in the 10 inch variety and loved my prime and keyboard. But 7 inches is perfect for almost everything I use a tablet for. In fact since the nexus 7 launched, I got mine before preorders shipped but I dunno the date, I haven't used anything that would be better on a 10 inch screen.

Thank you all. Looks like going to sell the thrive 10.1 and get a 7. Can't keep both devices. Now I'll have to decide between 8 or 16....... Ahhh choices!

Hi all, I'm considering buying a nexus 7. I have a thrive 10.1,but find it bulky to type in portrait mode. I use it to take a lot of notes on students, but also for the Web and reading on the weekend. Anyone give up a 10.1 for a 7 screen? Is it that big of a difference?
Thank you!

I know alot of people that once they got a 7 ince tab, mainly the Nexus 7, they no longer used/wanted to use, their 10 inch, as it was uncomfortable, heavy and just too big to be portable.
7 inch is the way to go, I personally think 8 inch would be perfect, but 7 inch it is.
GET A N7! TRUST ME
Get a 16 for sure, or wait for the 32.. 8 is just too small
I personally enjoy the size, it works for me immensely. And is super portable.
It's not the size of the tab that's important, but the skill with which you wield it.
I like the 7" and find it very easy to transport. But it is important to give your eye's more "visual breaks" and look arround more. I seem to get more eye fatigue with the 7" if I'm not careful.
So to add another overused phrase to this thread.
Be careful how you handle that 7" tab, you could go blind.

[Q] Is the Nexus 7 the best tablet out right now?

Cnet.com voted the Nexus 7 as their best holiday gift idea. It beat out the iPad Mini, which came in at number two:
http://cnettv.cnet.com/ultimate-gift-list-cnet-top-10-tech-ideas/9742-1_53-50135472.html
This guy over at forbes also thinks its the best gift to give (he actually cites the Cnet special as well):
http://www.forbes.com/sites/taesiky...y-season-and-why-its-not-good-news-for-apple/
I've only had mine for a week. So far I love it. Can't say its the best since I haven't played around with many others. I'd like to take the Nexus 10 for a test drive. Still, for the money, I can't think of anything better. What do you guys think?
I've had mine since August. It's my fifth tablet and by far my favorite.

Five!? Wow. What were the others and what makes this one so much better if I may ask?
I have a viewsonic g-tablet, and a transformer prime. They collect dust since I got the nexus7.
It's mainly size that makes it much more useable then those 10" tablets. Take it with me everywhere, its better for gaming also due to the size.
For the hardware and price, it really can't be beat.
I started with a 16gb on pre-order. Then they announced the 32gb. So I bought myself one of those. The girlfriend is getting my old 16gb, and I picked up another 32gb for my mom for the holidays for 229.
Really can't go wrong.
May I ask where you got the 32 for 229$

I had a Acer a500 10" tablet before my nexus 7. I'd have to charge it about once a week, maybe not even that. My nexus 7, I have to charge about every 2 days. Noo, this isn't about battery life. Its that I can't put my nexus 7 down! I can't believe how enjoyable this device is to use. I thought I was taking a step backwards with going to a smaller screen. I was wrong. I love my nexus 7 and I use this thing everyday. Its amazing and for $200, you can't beat it. My gf loves my nexus 7 and always wants to use it. In fact she wanted jewelry for Christmas but now she wants a nexus 7 lol

I actually got it from Adorama but it was a cyber monday thing on ebay.. But I've seen a few people in the whos is shipping thread stickied at the top getting similar prices since.
At that price, it was a great deal. I totalled up the 16gb from the play store, with tax and shipping it would have come to 230 something. And I got the 32gb for 229 with no tax and free shipping.
Had an I pad 1 and a Kindle Fire and by far this thing is my favorite tablet to date. Just works!

Best 7" Tablet and probably best tablet for the price.
If you want a larger tablet, then obviously there are probably better choices out there, but they cost more $$.
After watching Cnet top 10 gifts this year. I can see why the Nexus 7 made it to the #1 spot this year.
In the area where I'm living you won't find the Nexus 7 16GB model anywhere within a 50 mile range in any stores. Cause they are flying out of the door faster then they can get them. The stores in my area still had like four 32GB model of the Nexus 7 still. Least that what they had when I called them asking how many they had. That was three days ago when I bought my Nexus 7.

Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Asus TF300 and Nexus 7.
The Nooks were crippled with old versions of Android and had to be hacked to be made useful. The Galaxy Tab had Touchwiz over Android and Samsung was slow with updates. The Asus has terrible I/O issues that cause the tablet to be very slow when any I/O is being done. After having both 7 and 10 inch tablets I find for me 7 is the sweet spot and the Nexus has been my favorite.....so far.

Maybe not the best in sheer performance, but I would definitely say the best overall when it comes to value quality and performance as a package. And its a nexus, after getting my gnex in July I don't think I'll ever get another non-nexus android device.
On another note, when I decided to get one (I buy everything in 32gb where possible) most stores were out of stock, I bought the last one office depot had in.

Lame how CNET had to include the rubbish ipad mini as a runner up. Perhaps apple paid to get it I think there.
It doesn't deserve to be in the top 10 IMHO, it's overpriced and under spec.

It's the best of the cheap tablets but lack of TV output, poor Nexus' battery life and lack of a full screen web experience still leave iPad mini in the top spot imho.

Poor battery life? Not my experience at all. of course, I've only had it for a little over a week. Still, I've used the heck out of this little device and haven't felt the need to run to the charger. Two days is my requirement. If it can last me two days with heavy use then battery life will never be an issue. The Nexus 7 does this and more. Also, maybe I have very clear vision, but I think seeing web sites in full desktop view is fine on the Nexus 7. I always hit the "request full desktop option under chrome when browsing.
But it still nice to get someone's opinion who favors other devices. IMHO, the lack of a true HD screen, the wider and taller form factor (yes it is noticeable after holding the two devices in your hand), having to look at the same static stale home screen all the time, puts the iPad Mini near the bottom spot for me. Frankly, even if the Nexus 7 was priced the same at $329, I still think it is the better buy.

The lack of the TV output is most certainly a valid point, but I really don't know of anyone that uses that on a tablet. I have it on my Acer Iconia A100 and I have the HDMI cable and I used it once just to check it out. Not really that important with very few use cases.
The full screen web experience thing is a little confusing. You get the full desktop versions of the sites if desired. Web browsing is very snappy due to the quad core processor and 1GB of ram.
The iPad mini does have the upper hand on the battery life though, but it is by 2 hours. The iPad gets 12 hours while the Nexus 7 gets 10. I don't think I have ever used a tablet for 10 hours in a single day.
Yeah my first tablet and loving it.

Do I need the Nexus 7?

Hey guys I recently got a Nexus 7 but have noticed that it is nowhere as smooth as my Nexus 4 even when running Paranoid Android. I don't play video games and only use it to watch YouTube videos. I don't really think I need it. Unless you guys have some amazing ideas for me I'm probably going to get a refund on it.
Thanks guys

I love having my N7. Use it with Apex launcher/stock rom/rooted while at home. It's so light and the screen is mesmerizing to me. Save the N4 for work/on the go. There's no way I could go back to only N4/laptop. I see a bit of lag every once in a while (was really bad with Nova) but must have a nice tablet now and hate the weight of all ten inch ones.
I use my tablet (A500) whenever I want to play or watch youtube videos, it's nice to have another device with the same options as your phone

OK. Here's my opinion on tablets in general. Seven inch tablets are made for those who can't afford a ten inch tablet. That doesn't necessarily mean people buy them because of that, it's just the target demographic. Now, seven inch tablets do come in handy when you need a device for FPS gaming or portability. They own that area. And the very best seven inch is the Nexus 7, so if you want a seven inch tablet, buy the Nexus 7.
But...in every other area 10 inch tablets win. Usually they're top of the line, have back cameras (if you need one), are much easier to type on, and generally have better screens. So in this area for Android you have a few flagship tablets such as the Nexus 10, Note 10.1, and Infinity. The Nexus 10 is having major light bleed issues. I picked up one and exchanged it to find the second had it worse. So I returned it and bought an iPad. Yes. An iPad. I would never buy an iPhone, but the tablet experience on an iPad is stellar. I'm still mesmerized by how smooth everything is and how well it works. So don't be an Android fanboy and exclude the iPad if you're considering going for ten inch tablets. It's quite possibly the best of them all (in my opinion, anyway).

A 7 inch tablet is evolution of the eBook readers to me.
EBook readers where extremely popular. Let's take the basic form factor and make a it full fledge tablet. So yeah you can use it as a eBook reader and...movies,internet, email, games and everything else that full android device can do.
it depends on your routine.
if you have a nexus 4 you don't need a nexus7, nexus10 yes with its display, prefect for ebooks and Paranoid android, ,the nexus4 and its large screen is fine, I will get a 10 inch when its here, just for reading at night, I use my phone more so tablets are excess luxury goods

Yes, 7 inch aren't aimed at people who can't afford 10" tabs, they are aimed at people who want a more portable solution but a bigger screen than a phone.

Have owned an iPad 2 for a year now. Has been collecting dust ever since I bought Galaxy Nexus and then N4. Watching video? LOL @ Youtube fail. Website? N4 is ok. Playing games? too heavy. I'm still waiting for someone to suggest some use for me.
I don't feel a need for a tablet personally. I have a transformer which I used when it was newer than my phone. If i was to get a nexus 10 I may use it more than my Nexus 4. It just seems pointless to have a tablet and a phone when most of my usages are done on a desktop.
It depends what kind of a person you are. For me i use whatever is newer in my hands.

Which proves that you didn't read what I wrote. I said they were marketed towards those people. You don't see many (none that I can think of) seven inch tablets over $250, whereas ten inch tablets range from $250-$1000 depending on the model and storage. So, of course, seven inch tablets are getting better, but there are still none of them that are as powerful and "luxurious" as the high end ten inch tablets on the market.

It's opinion, rather than being true.
Don't think I'll ever buy another 10 incher as they are too big and clunky for general lounging about the house.
For me, the nexus 7 is perfect in terms of size, speed, utility for browsing and email etc. If I need to do any serious typing or work, that's when the tool for that job comes out ie. Iaptop rather than tablet.

I would never use an ipad because the design is beyond awful. Personally, i don't like the ios look. It's just me, but it's old, i had my ipod touch for years, I'm done with that look, and every app you get from ios follows the same rounded and glossy theme. I like squares, and i like matte. That aside though, you can barely put icons on the screen, which i guess doesn't matter because anyways because the reason why iblike my two bottom rows of 10 icons is so i can use widgets, which the ipad can't. I also dislike the back button. Unless I'm mistaken, it's still in the upper left? Which means that, right now as i type in portrait mode, i could not go back without setting my device down, repositioning my hands, pressing back, then reholding the device again. Same goes for the status bar (I'm using a kf2 i got from a raffle so it still has a classic status bar, and it's awful, i can't reach the touch of the screen, the idea is great on phones, bad on tablets, it's why they have a bottom status bar)
And in the very end, i like to tinker. I may be odd but in the end of the day i like to play with things. Break things. Get new themes, try new fonts, play with devs unique roms, see what my device can do. That's just so much better on android, especially being here at xda.
I just don't see anything the ipad really does right, uness you do like the look, then having that look across all apps would be nice for you, but the ui is still just annoying to use compared to android for tablets.

Yes. 7 inches are better than 10 inches. I sold my transformer for the nexus 7 because the transformer was too large it wasn't all that comfortable for one handed use. It was useless on most games. Typing required the keyboard or pretyping finger stretches. The 7 allows you to do everything a 10 can do but without the bulk. The only benefit a 10 has is if you are sharing a video and therefore need more screen, or you are doing something that requires a lot of screen real estate.

if you care about having a larger screen for mobile gaming or browsing on the go, if its for home only use i see no reason for a tablet because at this point no tablet are as good at browsing, gaming (depends), or productivity as a full computer. in fact, i got an infinity with dock for school, and later exchanged it for a chromebook because its only a little heavier but works so much better for school because of its great keyboard and much better online google docs experience
