Not liking the new back on the 2nd gen N7 at all - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Got my N7 from GameStop, everywhere else was sold out, I love it BUT.... The back of the device seems really slippy and isn't giving much grip, dunno if it's me but I prefer the back of the 1st gen, it kind of feels oily, anyone else finding this?

I like it. Looks better than the OG to me. I guess it's not as grippy but I'm not bothered by it.

I like it, the rubber feel is nice and soft, feels durable to me

oh yeah if defiantly looks better, just feels strange, soft yes, but the only way I can think of putting it is that it feels wax like, dunno, once I get a case it won't matter I suppose

Not an issue for me either. I like to hold this tablet in landscape mode and my thumb rests securely on top of the wider bezel. The remaining weight of the tablet rests on my four fingers below.

Its just thin and the rubber wraps around the edge. You're right though, it is slick. My damn wife almost dropped it. :heartattack:
Its good though. I'll probably grab a 7" sleeve from my sons Samsung tab 7" for traveling.

If I didn't have a 1st get Nexus 7, I would think the new back is just fine. But the original back is Perfect! Better grip, and feels like a British racing glove, looks good, doesn't show fingerprints. So I do wish the new one had the same texture! Also the buttons are smooth, not rubberized like the original, and don't extend out as far, so they are slightly harder to use.

I loved the dimpled back on the first gen N7, this one is ok.

Same here. There is this weird feeling on my fingertips after holding the thing. Much prefer the old dimpled back cover.

Get a life folks! Old back was cool. New back is different but cool also. I like the lightness of this new one. Go shoot a few hoops, hike a hundred miles, get some exercise . . . come back and the new Nexus 7 will be cool!

I think the new back is awesome

Wait....so because some of us don't like the back of a product we need get a life?.... Great logical thinking....

It's like the old Detroit mentality - new model has to look different, even if it's not better. You gotta wonder who sat around and said "Yeah, this new plain back is better, these new smooth buttons work better"

So I have another nexus 7 fhd with a later manufacture date and the back is nowhere near as slippy as my release day one, how strange

welcome to the gang! youll soon come to realize that the nexus s isnt part of the galaxy s series, its part of the nexus family. samsung just made the phone, thats where the resemblence stops. everything else comes from google. even thought there are similarities with the galaxy s series, it is a completely different phone.

lol done. the stock was running awesome, but had to root, to get some apps, that ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN MY AREA. lol.
well CM7 runs neat too, and has some nice features, like vibration, once the call starts. neat.
vibrant with all the lagfixes wasn't feeling the same. even SKYPE doesnt lag with big conversations here. absolutely awesome
btw, nexus s sits in a hand much better than vibrant.
the only thing im concerned. i've read that the nexus s DOES NOT FEATURE GORILLA GLASS. and i dont want to test it out. anyone had problems with scratches ?

yeah the Nexus S has a better grip in the hand but im still waiting for a premium case (preferably Case-Mate Tough Case) as it is still slippery in the hand if i dont hold onto the phone hard.
and no i haven't had any problems with scratches... unless you count the scratches on the back of the phone but pretty sure you're talking about the screen

mmm, it sits nice in my hand. vibrant was slimmer, but its design really sucked. didn't like it.
mmm, the common truth - if you don't scratch the phone, it wont get scratched. since i have scratches even on vibrant probably the keys done it.

Is this what everyone complains about?

Just got my nexus 7 in today. It seems fine, although, I noticed that con the cleft side of the screen, it seems to be slightly raised in the middle. The corners attached fine. Are people sending out back for this? It doesn't seem like an issue, just an annoyance
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Sounds like it. Seems like it's always on the left side for some reason. It's lifts up over the bezel and you can push down on it and it lifts again later. That is how mine is... or was hopefully.
I heated it up with a game, then put a couple clamps on it, left it over night turned off, and today it has stayed down so far. Hope the adhesive that is suppose to hold the glass down sticks now.
I had a previous one though that was slightly different, it was raised on the left side, but I couldn't push it down. Seemed like a screw was tightened too far or something. I sent that one back.
Either deal with it or get a refund if it really bothers you. You can also try number of fixes that are posted on these forums. They pretty much all have this issue to some degree.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yes this is it, but the real problem is if it makes a noise when you push on it. THATS the annoying part.
Mine doesn't make any noise, although it definitely is a tiny bit squishy and if you try and push hard on it, it does act a little like an LCD monitor. I just didn't care enough to try and return it, as I would have never noticed it if everyone hadn't had their panties up in a wad as much as they did. I figure the worst that happens is that it gets worse over the next year and I end up having to spend a whole $200 more on a newer model.
I agree. I can't imagine this truly hurting the experience. Oh well. Not a big deal as long as it works well

Are you guys serious? If I buy a product, it better not have defects. Why would anyone settle for bad quality? Products these days should not have any issues with the technology we have.
This doesn't make sense to me.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I agree, if it was a true issue I would get a new one. In my case, it is only raised in the middle, and not that noticeable. Everything else is fine. You can fix that too
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Besides it shouldn't affect performance. I hope
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
When I got my second one from the play store, it looked like the middle of the left side was raised. I thought I pushed it down but it never came back up.
I keep looking at it and touching it but nothing. I don't know if I imagined it or maybe bad lighting.
Just install a TPU case where the lip overhangs the screen. Problem solved. Out of sight out of mind. I'm enjoying my N7.
If its a problem 6 months later then I'll call and exchange it. Big whoop.

I don't think that they all have this issue, only a select few. I have been lucky enough to get 4 Nexus 7's and no issues. I have seen the issue posted on the site several times though, and the fixes seem pretty easy. There are some youtube videos on fixing it too. Good luck fixing it mate, would take advantage of the warranty if I were you.

I am not talking about a problem to that extreme, I am talking about, a very slight raise in the middle, with no squeak. The only thing that I can think of that could be bothersome about that is that when you push hard on the bezel, a little bit of the left screen ripples

I have exact the same problem as described. They most annoying part is they "cracking" sound it does when tapping on the left side. I curious whether the touchscreen responsivness issue is somehow related to this problem.
Btw I thought it might be related to the processor since its also on the left side, maybe the heat causes the glue to detach ... if you know what I mean.

Just discovered a stuck pixel. Dang

Anybody else have a slightly curved back?

Does anyone else noticed the back of their Nexus 7 being ever so slightly curved? Not that this is something that would bother me, but when I place it on a table it is able to have just enough rock to it that swiping my finger with it or plugging a cable into it will pull the device in the direction of the tension.
(Moderators, I originally put this in Q&A, but since I realized it isn't so much a Q&A thread, I put it here in general. You can delete the Q&A one)
EDIT: Video comparison I just made - http://youtu.be/EhS7-KTwn4g
I believe it is designed that way so the speakers don't sit flat.

But it is down the vertical spine of the device, not the horizontal one. Plus the speaker grills are placed on the curve of the devices edge, so laying flat shouldn't be much of a problem anyway.
Not sure then. I just tried it with mine and I don't have that problem.

Oh, I wasn't sure what you meant by that. I thought you meant if you pressed down on the top or bottom edge it would rock.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Best buy just refused to exchange it and wouldn't even try another device to see if it also did it, claiming it is a design choice (clearly she was on the ASUS/Google development team). Nor would they PM with the Staples coupon after the fact (but I can understand that one). She was just very rude and dismissive.
I just laid mine down on a marble counter. It sits flat. Only the edges are tapered for the speakers. Its pretty sturdy.

Yes! Somebody else notices. I was using my tablet in class today vertically and it kept turning horizontal. I noticed that the back isn't completely flat which is causing it to have movement when I lay it on a flat service.

Yeah, It might not be a huge "issue" (as the comment on my video says), but it is very annoying, especially considering I like to have the charger plugged in when I'm on it at times, and if there is any tension on the cord from where it is plugged in to where I am sitting, it will pull the tablet toward it.

Tablet build quality issue with rear plastic

First of all, hello to everyone, glad to join and be a part of this great community. I just opened up my tablet today (32gb in black I ordered from abt.com) and the first thing I noticed was that the back of the tablet is not flat. The plastic has about 8 bumps (4 on top 4 on bottom), like something is sticking out from inside. They are not very large bumps but definitely visible, and looks bad especially for a $600 tablet. I just wanted to check if others have noticed this, just to verify if this is something common, or if maybe if it's just my device. I took a photo with my nexus 4 but the camera is not that great and didn't show the problem very well. I will try to get a photo with my brothers dslr and post it later today.
no problem here. And I did check mine tablet with microscope I am not kidding, I am super picky about build quality.
The only thing I don't like is very minor light bleed which was not present in original Note 10.1 2012 edition. But it's not that bad as Nexus 10, I went through 4 of those and finally give up on that model. Where is your tablet made?
Nothing like that here. That's something worth exchanging for.
Regards,
John Francis
Mine has a little play in the back left side like it can be pushed in and clank off the guts of the tablet. Will be exchanging it again....

Thanks for the words man!
If this was the only issue, I MIGHT think about keeping it, but it isn't, I listed the others in the build quality thread ... and my black plastic clunks/pops pretty loud, especially since I'm right handed so its always in my left hand. I would feel different if this had some age to it, but right out the box its got all sorts of clunks/pops/creaks ... what about 3 months or 6 months from now? or out of warranty? is this thing gonna **** the bed on me or fall apart? I'd rather start off on a solid foundation and any wear on this tablet is by me ya know?
Welp! Here's to the 3rd try hopefully being the last try to get the tablet I paid for lol

Xmas gift love it - need some suggestions

So my GF got me the 9 for my xmas gift (I got her an apple store card to outright buy the new 6, opposites and all)
Anyway I am having trouble finding a decent affordable case and glass protector for it. Im all over amazon with no luck. All the case seem like garbage and the reviews of the screen protectors say they arent real tempered glass and break easily.
Anyone bought a case they like yet. She got me a gift card to amazon with it to buy a case and I hate using my devices (all nexus) without cases on them. Wish spigen made a 9 case.

Bumper goes around the entire tablet. The magnet is really strong, and no metal clips or stylus holders. It's a very clean case.

I think that I had either that case exactly, or something very similar to it, for my nexus 7, and the feature where you could make it stand up by itself was nearly useless, because it constantly fell down. it forced the tablet to stand at a nearly vertical angle, and it would just fall flat on it's face. Granted, I don't remember which brand, but I do know that I preferred to not use it.

Not a bad case- fairly priced, considering how much they want you to pay if you are considering what best buy and radio shack wants you to pay for things like that (From Belkin, etc).
However there are NO review.... always a little sign to be cautious.

Bumper goes around the entire tablet. The magnet is really strong, and no metal clips or stylus holders. It's a very clean case.

its a cookie cutter case, meaning poetic has the same thing but with less designs. I'm holding it right now, yes the magnets are strong and it is a very nice slim case. the bumper goes all the way around with openings for the hard to find buttons , and the USB port and lower mic. with tiny opening for the upper microphone hole (both of them, yes the N9 records stereo vids)

screen protector is good quality. its a VERY thick dense acrylic urethane. Not glass like I want but I cant seem to find a glass one yet. Most say they arent in the reviews. For now for the price this is a really good one for the money.

Love this case. Just like the one I Have on my nexus 7 thats been on since 2012 and kept it new looking.
Fully protected, not heavy at all, and the stand is great. For 12$ its well worth it. love clam shell cases on my tabs so I get the comfort of know the screen is covered when I carry it. This is def a good case.
