[Q] Anyone knows where my storagespace went after upgrading to 4.3? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
i noticed something weird after ugrading to android 4.3 (official images).
After the upgrade and setting up my n4 i noticed that my available storagespace was only 6gb, but i have a 16gb model so it must be around 12gb user available space(????) at minimum i guess.
Somebody noticed this too or is there some explaination for this??
I clean flashed the sh*t out of it so that shouldn't be the problem i think.
Cheers

I don't recall the exact cause of this. But if you flash the factory images with the bat file it will be back to normal.
That will also wipe your phone though so keep that in mind.

THNX m8,
gonna try asap!! Will report back.
Really??? So flashing the img one by one isn't the best way to do it, tought it was the right way.
Cheers.

I'm sure it can be done no problem flashing them one by one. Just can't recall what causes it. Whether you need to fastboot erase things or what. Maybe don't flash the userdata. Img Had it happen to me on the original nexus 7.
I'm pretty sure if you look around in the how to threads its probably mentioned and explained. Or a Google search. I just don't care. Since the flashing script fixes it / doesn't cause it.

I think it mostly comes up from erasing cache instead of formatting it. I ran into it the other day too when going back to stock. You can try wiping cache if you installed a custom recovery, otherwise a factory reset (formatting data/cache) cleared out up for me

Sgace,
I have the same problem.
Did you manage to solve it?
albundy2010,
Do you mean the file named flash-all.bat?
If yes, what should I do with it? enter the bootloader and double click on the file? I mostly used toolkits by now...
Thanks!
Edit: Nevermind, it seems a factory reset (from the phone settings, not recovery) fixed the problem. Wierd.

It will return to phone to a clean full stock 4.3. It will be exactly like how a device would ship from Google with 4.3 on it. Except that the boot loader will still be unlocked.
To use the bat file its fairly simple.
1. Unpack the file you get from Google. Do not extract the files you end up with any further.
2. Depending on how your system is set up it can vary. So just do this to make to be sure. Move everything that was extracted to whatever directory has the fastboot executable ( fastboot exe)in it. Toolkit folder maybe ( I don't use those awful things so no idea where it puts things.). Or the platform tools folder in the SDK if that's installed.
3. Yes the phone needs to be in the bootlader. Once you're in the boot loader just click on the bat from within the folder with the fastboot.exe from step 2.
All this is assuming your computer has the proper drivers / working fastboot etc.
Still lost or can't figure it out, follow the flash factory images guide.

For me also a factoryreset from settings did the job.
Thnx for the help Guys!!
Cheers

[Q] Help! Nexus 4 stuck in bootloop after 4.4 update.

Hi guys,
I tried to update my Nexus 4 to 4.4 when Google pushed the update out for it yesterday, I forgot I had unlocked the phone (I don't have any custom ROMs on it, just SuperSU.)
Every time I try and power it on, the loading screen is endless, although I can hold power and volume down to enter recovery mode, nothing seems to be working.
I am a bit of a novice so any help or suggestions would be really appreciated!
Thanks.
The first few pages of the forum is littered with posts like this, i was in the same situation.
What i did was download the 4.3 rom from google, and flash /boot and /system onto the phone. I suspect the 4.4 rom would also work.
This got the phone booting without harming (most of) my data, but much of the UI was mangled and didnt work properly. I tried to backup my images over USB but it didnt work, you might have a better result. I also wanted to backup my SMS but they had all vanished.
I rebooted the phone to recovery (TWRP) and used adb to backup the sdcard (adb pull /sdcard sdcard) then did a full flash using the 4.4 rom downloaded from google and that got it working again. Then i reflashed the latest version of TWRP recovery and SuperSU.
Hope that helps.
That's really helpful, thanks! Is there ANY chance of a step-by-step? I'm a complete 'noob' probably a mistake to root in the first place :crying:
If you're busy don't worry, just don't want to **** things up more than I have haha.
Thanks, appreciate it.

Cheers guys, a lot more helpful than the bloke from Google. Will try it in the morning!
This will surely help
If somebody is facing boot loop after kitkat update on nexus 4 and no data backup can try to go to safe mode and backup their data. To goto safe mode on boot screen just keep pressing up and down volume button for some time phone will get into safe mode and can be backed up.
Hi,
It also happened to me, dont know if it is related to having ROOT or not, but i had to manually flash factory image (4.4) and it worked. I flashed everything except userimage.img but on first boot it took like 15 minutes to reboot and then all my personal data (photo, music...) was gone....
So just be cautious before upgrading!

Yeah that is pretty much what I did to fix mine except that I did not flash the userdata (step 10 in chapter D) so that I would't loose my data.

I had sideloaded a rom in recovery so that it will replace the lost system.img on my phone. Then, it booted up and I flashed back factory images the usual way. Everything is running smoothly again.

Installing the driver. Refer to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992345
Boot to bootloader and connect to your PC, usually Windows will find the driver automatically

Weird issues after kitkat upgrade

Was happily on CM and for some reason decided to try stock kitkat. Did everything via tutorial and all went all well - but been getting some strange issues which has made my phone unusable.
When i press vol up/down it takes ten seconds to pop up. Sound does not work at all whether calling/playing music. Settings f/c when I attempt to click the sound menu. I believe everything else is working fine.
Tried reflashing stock firmware countless times... Tried flashing numerous custom 4.4 roms.
Australian bought phone if it makes any difference.
Please help as Im stuck using a spare iphone 4 and its killing me! haha.
Thanks,

Can you describe your method of flashing in case you are doing something wrong? Please describe as much information as possible.

I believe the best thing to do now is to flash stock ROM and make sure to full wipe everything even internal memory.
If you have external memory, back up what ever you think necessary to it, the remove it from the device and keep it out.
That clean start well give you a good indication whether the problem is based on a bad flash or there is something wrong with the device.
If everything is running smoothly, we will see about flashing custom ROM.

Yep its what ive done, reflashed stock completly and removed sd card. Still no dice - running complete stock 4.4 still with this problem.
Could this be an EFS problem?
If it were an efs problem you wouldn't even boot in most cases.
Can you describe how you flashed stock ROM? Maybe you did it wrong.

NEE region? - if so it has issues with 4.4.2, @nex7er had the same issues, and if you're using SweetROM I believe he pm'd not-i the fix for it. -- It can be fixed though.
Maybe completely wipe it (System, Data and all) and then Flash stock with Odin?
After kitkat upgrade.. if i use camera app such as camera 360 Or picsart, i can't save my photo to sdcard. It's error, Has anyone had or know how to resolve this problem???

I did post the reason on the last page what I think it might be...... if you're in a Nordic region or even have a nordic model it's a common problem, if you search around you'll see others that have the same issue (notably ne7xer). -- If it's not that, then it's a warranty job due to faulty HW
EDIT: you could try a complete wipe including re-partitioning, but that's a bigger job that you'd want to do in all honesty.

Could be my last option considering knox is tripped..
Got a link to a tutorial for re-partitioning?
Grab a PIT file for your device; - then you flash firmware with Odin / PIT file. - I have never done it, nor do I fancy doing it, but have a read (journeyman posted asking how and done it, it's in this section Q+A) - I can never remember whether you flash the PIT first then the firmware or both together. I wouldn't want to hazard a guess just in case though.
But if you've tripped KNOX, then yes, seems like it could be your last option, unless you have tried some various custom ROMs? ( I know sweetROM seems to be the master fix for any issues peple have on KK atm) could just be a stock issue currently that will more than likely get a fix at some point.
EDIT As yours is an AU phone, possible it could be a HK model? - from KOGAN? I know some AU users have had HK models from them.
EDIT2: When I flashed HAL ROM, @theresident stated in his how to OP that we needed to format /system during install - It's possible this may also fix it, but that wipes your entire system obviously and *IF* it doesn't boot up you then have issues
EDIT3 : quote from HAL ROM OP
Instalation:
1. Copy the zip to the phone
2. Reboot to Recovery/CWM
3. Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4. Wipe Cache
5. Wipe Dalvik Cache
6. Mounts and Storage then click "Format /System" (This won't delete any of your data)
7. Install.. wait one minute and ROCK !!!

You are hijacking.
Anyway,
1. Install es file manager or any file reader with root.
2. navigate to /System/etc/permissions
3. open "platform.xml" file to edit
4. look for the stack that has "WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE"
you will find something like <group gid="sdcard_r" />
5. make sure these lines are there, if not, add them
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
<group gid="media_rw" />
That's it

[Q] Updating incrementally, or just the latest?

I'm still on 4.2.1 on my nexus 4 (been a little slow with the updates...they always fail on me so I have to manually flash). My question is, can I download and flash the latest version (4.4.4) or is it best to update my way up (4.2.2, then 4.3, then 4.4, so on and so forth)?
If you have a flashable zip of 4.4.4 you can update to that. Otherwise I'd update to 4.4 and then incremental.
Make sure everything is up to date, recovery, boot img ect. ect. I had an issue with twrp and had to update it, problem was that the twrp updates would fail. Long story short, had to go the adb route and update my recovery...all went well after that.

My version was 4.4.2 and I flashed manually to 4.4.4. Only one app needed reinstall. (Hex editor)
See my reply http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/help-ota-t2802250
If you don't mind losing all of your data, then you can simply download the latest factory image from here and install it via one of the toolkits or using fastboot. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
If you're rooted, then you need to update to the latest TWRP, flash the latest radio and bootloader and then install any 4.4.4 ROM and Gapps. A factory reset is recommended however.

When on a Nexus 4 the LTE is activated (hack) then flashing the latest radio is not a good idea.
After flashing LTE is gone.
Maybe my reply to another post is helpfull http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/help/help-ota-t2802250

Actually, if you download the factory image from google and extract it, you can change the flash-all.bat file so that it doesn't wipe your data.
Right click the file and select "edit" and delete the "-w" between "nutfastboot" and "update" towards the end and it prevents your data from being wiped. From there, you put your device into bootloader mode, then on your computer just right click the folder that you extracted while pressing shift and select "open command window here." Type in "flashboot devices" to make sure the phone is seen by the system, then type "flash-all.bat" and boom, good to go. Just flashed a factory image without wiping the data.
Upgraded right to 4.4.4. Did have to root again and reinstall TWRP, but the Nexus Root Toolkit makes that easy, lol. My only thing is that everything seems to take a bit longer. Transitions are smooth, but there's a lag from when I select something, to when it opens. For example, I use widget locker. When unlocking, it used to immediately unlock. Now it takes about 2 or 3 seconds, but that may just be the app itself. Probably would have been best to flash a little at a time (4.3, then 4.4, then 4.4.4) but oh well. Maybe when I get back from vacation next week, lol.
Also, wasn't concerned about losing LTE because I never really needed it to begin with. I only ever use data when i'm on my lunch at work and it's mostly playing something like Ruzzle or reading news articles. Plus, LTE pretty much cut my battery down to half of what it normally is. I'll be getting a new phone when the next Nexus is released anyway so i'm not too concerned about lack of LTE on my current phone. We got, what, 4 months before the next one is due?
Where was this ages ago?

Are you sure, because I didn't take it out. All I did was delete "-w" from the batch file and that was it. Although, I do think I remember something about that as a secondary "just in case you're really worried about it" option.
Happy to be Guinea Pig
I had problems with my launcher @matrix0886 when I just deleted the "-w"
I'll give what @jd1639 said a shot too
Sorry for the late reply. I don't use the stock launcher (I use widget locker for my lockscreen and Apex for my home launcher) so I obviously haven't noticed any problems, lol. But how did the other option go for you @knightowl439?

Ok bro, first thing you need is the LG Drivers which you can get here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/g3...Ver_3.11.3.exe
Next you need the LG Flash Tool which you can get here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/fw..._Tool_2014.zip
Then you need the stock rom which you can get from the sources you found or you can even just google it. Everything is pretty self explanatory. Make sure you're tablet is in d/l mode. If you have any more questions just ask. Good luck!!!

XXX01, did this work for you? I'd like to be prepared if I come across a problem like this. Also, has anyone had any luck flashing *any* custom rom on a 430? Did you get your stock ROM yet. I can pull it off one of mine if you still need it., I got two of them from Sprint just to save the activation fees on 3 other phones. I need to root them because they are way to slow. The hardware is way too small. Anyways, as soon as I figure out how to root them I can do a nan droid off the one I have never used so I won't even have to factory reset first. If you give me the steps you did to root yours it will save me time. How did you brick yours?

Anyways, as soon as I figure out how to root them I can do a nan droid off the one I have never used so I won't even have to factory reset first. If you give me the steps you did to root yours it will save me time. How did you brick yours?

I need to know what recovery you used then you can flash it instead of having to use your PC.
It's guides online on how to extract the firmware I'm not sure how to myself cause I need a way to get mine out of a bootloop

Extracting a nan droid is easy enough. It is what you should have done as soon as you installed a recovery. t's just a back up. I need to use the same recovery you installed so it works on yours. After I back it up I will send you a link. You put it on your card and then restore from your recovery. It is key to always back up your firmware before you modify anything. If I make a back with the device that I haven't used it will be stock for you. I've never rooted a LG so I'm still looking for the method. I can compress it to a TAR if you want to flash it odin (or whatever is used for LG) but it is easiest just to install it as a restore. You can still power your device on to the recovery can't you?
I didnt even get to the recovery part I rooted and try to reboot after installing supers u from King root and been looping ever since

Getting it out of the boot loop is usefully not all that difficult. Did you try wiping the Dalvik and the cache? That will probably do it. If not what you need is the boot or kernel. Find the stock or the custom kernel and install it then wipe dalvik and cache.
I think i need the boot.img or kernal and I can't find either anywhere I've looked and I've tried factory reset and nothing I have the stock recovery so j can't wipe dalvik

A factory reset will wipe the dalvik. I will see what I can find tomorrow. When I get mine rooted you can use the boot image from my back up if I can't find one elsewhere. It's best to install a custom recovery. If your wanting the option to return to stock a good app is flashily. You can back up the boot loader and the kernel before you install a recovery and then use it to flash it back when you want to. It will even back it up to drop box so it doesn't get lost.
What method did you use to root?
I used king root and I'm no rookie to the rooting Android thing I've been doin it for years I just can't find a recovery to flash or anything other then King root to root it and if i could get it to go past the splash screen I'd be able to fix it but I can't get it passed there unless I find those files

Android is starting... Optimising app xx of xx on every boot

Hi all,
Have had my Nexus 10 with a few years now and rooted it not long after I got it, stuck with stock rom though.
All was fine until I updated to the latest LMY49H Build using NRT (Nexus Root Toolkit) which I always do and it has never let me down.
But with this update I get the swirling balls, Android boot screen then about 10 minutes of "Android is starting... Optimising app xx of xx". I have wiped via settings, via recovery (TWRP and stock), Flash Stock and Unroot (NRT), Root (NRT which wipes data), cleared cache, dalvik, data using TWRP but every time I end up with this optimising apps screen.
I have tried restoring previous versions at setup (apps, wallpapers etc.) and I have skipped all setup options for a clean fresh copy but always with the same result.
I have been looking around but didn't find someone running stock rom with the same problem, If I missed it then I'm sorry.
Please someone help me as I'm going on a trip soon and will need my tablet!
Could be your flash memory is wearing out. When you are using TWRP try copying a file then reboot into TWRP and see if the file is still there. If it is gone it is bad flash memory and you need a new motherboard...

Sorry I don't get what you mean. do you mean to flash a file? (or at least see if TWRP finds the file?)
e.g. copy a file, supersu.zip or something in downloads folder, then boot into TWRP to see if its in the folder ready to flash?
Oh I hope its not the motherboard, the tablet has hardly been used compared to others I know of.
Do you know if its safe to revert to a previous version of android using NRT? LMY49H or even G? I was happy enough with those versions and only updated thinking it would clear the security update (7.2mb) which I ended up doing manually anyway (Unroot & Update, install security update, Root).
I had a problem like this years ago when I flashed a ROM to my old Galaxy S4, flashing a different ROM fixed the problem then, I'm hoping it will now too!
Thanks for your help

Not flash your memory but check your: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory
And yes it is safe to restock (another) ROM.

Right, I mean just copy a file to it that is not already there and rebooting it and seeing if the file is still there.
If it works then you probably don't have a hardware issue.
It is always worth trying to flash a known working rom, though you may need to hard reset to get it working.

Sorry, I know what flash memory is, I mean I didn't know what he meant by copy using TWRP.
I may try flash the previous LMY49H ROM then

OK cool, thanks for clearing that up..
This literally just started when I updated to the new ROM (LMY49J). I have done a full wipe already so hard reset shouldn't be a problem, nothing left on it now anyway. Think I may have done it already tho
Before the update I had a full TV series and a few movies saved into it and it had no problems playing/saving anything. Think I may try stock flash & unroot with LMY49H and see how that goes.. I'm away from it at the moment so hopefully will try tomorrow.
I have a feeling it is saving files though, displayed my old wallpaper when I restored from previous tablet option on setup. Must be saving this picture somewhere after initial download at setup. It is booting up eventually like, just after it optimizes the apps, maybe 5-10min.
What other issues could I be having?
You really have to create or copy something new and reboot the tablet to test. Files and setting will stay in the cache and so give the illusion working unless you reboot.
Also are you doing a clean shutdown via the menu after hitting the power button for no more than 2 seconds? Doing power off without going through menu can cause your behavior.

You have to copy something in recovery mode with twrp. From a different directory (or usb stick to your device) and then reboot to see if it is still there.
