I know the feeling. I was prepared to pay the $830 but when I looked today I grabbed one for $625.
People don't think about it, but 40,000 devices for $32,000,000 is $800 per device. Every one they sell less than that they're losing money on.

I think there's a lot of people thinking this. Once it gets closer to the required amount and its a more feasible possibility that the phone will actually be made there will be more people to jump on board. That's what I was thinking until I found out that the funders got a refund if it didn't meet the goal. Once I knew that then I jumped on because I don't want people not buying the device because they're waiting for the number to get higher. There just isn't much logic behind that when you'll either get the phone or a full refund. The longer you wait, the more you risk having to pay more for the device.
Sent from my One X

Yep - I jumped on board too $32million is a big target though - hopefully when it beats the pebble smartwatch funding record ($10mil) people will take it more seriously.

Fortunately there seem to be lots of good samaritans that are pledging lower amounts for no reward - basically subsidising the phone for the rest of us!

Every little bit helps. If this phone gets funded then they'll release another next year that maybe you can jump on. If this phone doesn't get made then there's no knowing how long it'll take for a device like this to be made again.

Would it be against XDA policy to make a thread such as this in the Android and Windows Phone general sections? I didn't think of it till you mentioned it, but just because its in those threads doesn't mean people aren't interested. We're not forcing the phone on anyone, just wanting to bring it to light. I've used all of my social networking connections to promote this device.

If they're not far from making it by the last days, I can give them the 205 dollars to make sure they go through with it. 830+30 dollars is still a good price for that phone.

Would you be interested in a cheaper version?

Just a quick on. Would you devs and general hackers be interested in cheaper alternitive?
Same specs just won't look as nice. and probably only do HDMI out instead of speaker outputs. Also made in china to drive down the cost.
Im in the process of getting a prototype worked up.
Anybody interested?
Here is a question for you.
Would you be happy to buy it at cost price or a slightly inflated price where I could then send free devices to developers?
I do not wish nor want to make money on this product.
sounds good

yeah big time but its gotta really hit the price point of a google TV to be logical...
`
what price point are you aiming for?
Sub-$100, I would be interested.
Hoping for sub $200 but I will try and drive the price down as low as I can. It will have the same CPU/GPU as the Nexus Q and if possible same WiFi Bluetooth and NFC chip to avoid and driver issues when you great developers do a straight up port.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
yeah it would need to run the same components. i don't see devs going out and buying the model that is basically a knock off and supporting it (no offence, i would love your knock off version). I would be curious as to if removing the amp would mess that kinda stuff up? i suggest you talk with devs first and see. I feel as if the amp is a lackluster, and extra cost feature not really needed as buying a external sound system is cheap these days.
all in all i love your idea and would like more updates on where your at!
thanks!
The product was never designed to be a knock off of the Nexus Q. It just so happens that they have the same basic hardware. This device was intended to be a Android Media Player that was running crap hardware. I watched I/O and seen the beautiful device and after looking at it realised its the same CPU/GPU and the idea sprung to mind. I don't want to market it as a knock off Nexus Q but a Android Media player with hack-ability that can if you so wish, pretend to be a Nexus Q in terms of software.
sorry didnt mean to knock you like that saying "knock off" haha that has a bad sense that comes with it. let me rephrase. if you could produce a device that would run the exact same software, Dev ports as well, i would snatch that up in a heartbeat as i feel the development on the Q will be greater with google pumping out 6,000 of these devices to devs at I/O.
are you thinking of starting a kickstarter? if you plan to jump into anything like that please post the link so i can check it all out!
If you need someone to bounce ideas off of im open to comment and try to help. im an aspiring dual major in CGT and entrepreneurial class so if you wanted some models or business ideas im down to talk.
Quick update on the price point. I think it will be impossible to do this for sub $100. The processor in the device itself is costing $60 alone.

cant work on mass orders at lower cost? that seems high but i guess i could be wrong =P
I think two versions could have some success:
1. Basically same parts, exact clone except the design and maybe the lack of an amp and fancy leds. Basically you can run the same Rom without any bigger Modifications. At least 30% cheaper.
2. Heavily striped down version with another soc, no nfc, maybe even no bt. Just hdmi, mains and audio. Allwinner A10 comes into mind. Pricetag under ~$90.
The Tegra3 is rumored to cost $25 in the Nexus 7, if you can get descent quantity order i think the omap should be in that price range too.
Currently my order is only 1000 orders. Because I have to way to guarantee I can even move that amount! Currently working on a kickstarter style project page.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Definitely interested in an open alternative to the Q.
You should definitely try Kickstarter for this. You should be able to get a large order to drive down the price if its popular enough
I am not sure what market you are targeting with your planned android media player.
With a built in speaker amp, the Nexus Q differentiates itself from the pack. As such, it can compete in the Sonos type markets, and in markets like all of the "iPod Docks" that you see littered in cubicles everywhere. Considering Sonos charges $350+ and Bose charges $250+, the Q can be considered somewhat competitive, considering it's Made in America status.
By removing the amp, now you are turning it into a Google TV / Apple TV / Roku / WDTV Live / etc competitor. This is a very intense market, and if you can't get the made in china price under $100, I think it will be hard to compete. (And there are already small / cheap devices that plug into a TV: http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/18/3028202/mk802-android-usb-hdmi-stick )
As I said the CPU im looking at $60 before shipping. I plan to sell the the device at cost + shipping. Their is a kickstarter page coming (Not actually kickstarter as im not in the US)
The AMP is of no use to me as the device would go into my current setup.
Also being almost deaf I personally have no use for it

Well, im interested to see what apple have included in the next upgrade! i would never have another iphone though.
I dont think it will be any more powerful than the s3, and from what i have seen it has about half an inch of extra screenage!!
I would be surprised if they unlocked the OS to compete with android and the customisation, but i doubt that will happen!
maybe apple will introduce bluetooth file sharing!!!!!! every other phone has it, why not on iphones? there is a cheap £50 phone at tesco's which texts calls and takes photos. i think its a cheap rubbish Alcatel phone. it has bluetooth.
ah well, ill just stick with what i know and like. Samsung!!!!!

yeh im looking forward for iphone 5 but just for interesting. Had iphone 4s, phone maybe isnt so bad, but operating system is totally crap. Couldnt even send files over bluetooth...... android ftw
Here's what I know already:
1) It will still be highly dependant of iTunes.
2) Users will have to wait maybe months for a jailbreak.
3) The OS will basically still look the same as it did in 2007.
4) Still won't be able to backup the device on the memory card (ala cwm).
5) It will still have only one button - no dedicated back or menu keys.
6) You still won't be able to Bluetooth apps / movies / music to other phones.
7) Out of the box it won't just work until it's activated.
8) No removable battery of external memory card support.
9) I could seriously go on and on and on. But I've wasted enough time on crapple.
Please understand, I actually also own an iphone but once you've tasted android, ios is a major pain in the behind. Unless you are a simple person who find it difficult to do anything other than swype left to right.
Man I haven't tinkered with my iPhone since last year. I'm just bored of it and find it cumbersome to do anything on it. Believe me, it works great for messaging and taking / making calls.
I'm still on an older firmware because upgrading would mean hours and hours or restoring and re-downloading hacks, if they still work.
What pisses me off most is all the hype and media attention it gets. The S3 will still be a much better phone but still no media reports about it, on TV at least. Here in Australia all the major news networks have been talking about it's release for a week. Even today there was an ad for the morning news, which will feature the new iphone. Apple have bought out the media I think.

Why Nexus4 is dead cheap?

can somebody tell me why the #nexus4 is that much cheap ($350 ). to recall, the #galaxys3 cost is #700+. do you think #nexus4 is better than #S3 in all aspects?
dont tell me that wait for reviews...it will be fun to discuss before release....
what I am thinking is the samsung hardware better than lg.
From what I've read from different articles it's supposed to be a budget smartphone thus the price tag. Who knows what the real reason might be.
I'd say they did it to further compete against apple and their rip off prices. Really that is how I see it. Discuss
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
The Galaxy Nexus has been just as cheap, and the Nexus 7 is also much cheaper than most other comparable tablets.
Google makes most of their money off advertising. They want more people using their product, they're not looking to make all their money via device sales.

Samsung gets money off their devices, Google gets money off their advertise and Google play services. This is also a reason why Nexus 7 was so cheap
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
I think google don't try to make much money from the hardware, but the nexus 7 and nexus 4 at those prices serve to get people into the google ecosystem, which is where the money is for them; advertising, collecting data, etc
It's an Android reference device. The point is to get stock Android out on modern hardware for development and hobbyist users. The low price is probably to increase the adoption rate amongst devs. If they get the price low enough (this is probably the sweet spot) it's worth buying even if it's not their daily use phone.
Google is reinventing the smart phone market. They price their products at an extremely affordable price. With it being brand new, completely awesome and it destroys the iphone. Who wouldn't buy?

Seriously what's with all the LG hate? Have you used the Optimus G? It is amazing and if the Nexus 4 is anything like it I will be VERY happy.
As for why the Nexus 4 is so cheap, Google is trying to create a brand, and what's the best way to build a loyal fan base then to offer an amazing device for an amazing price. They want to reach out to as many people as possible which is why they offer an 8GB model of the phone. Someone will buy one, show it off to their friend and then THEY will want one. It's a great strategy and I can see it working for them in the long run.

I love this phone already and don't even have it in my hands yet. Google=Genius for putting this monster piece of tech out on the market at such an affordable price point. They are essentially subsidizing the price so that they can build their ecosystem. Mad props to Google on making what looks to the be the best phone on the market and mad props to LG for the hardware. After my G2X, I told myself I'd never go LG again, but with Google handling the OS, it is safe to assume it will be nothing but buttery goodness.

That's just not true. Read some of the previous posts, as Oxirane wrote "Google makes most of their money off advertising. They want more people using their product, they're not looking to make all their money via device sales.". The price has got nothing to do with the popularity of the manufacturer...
Samsung galaxy nexus was 700 went it 1st come out. Nexus 4 starting price is no where near that. There r both Google.

The price you're paying for the Nexus 4 off of the Play store is Google selling the device at cost. Real world retail price would be much closer to the $599 that T-Mobile is charging for it when you factor in their subsidizing after the $199 up front.
They didn't skimp on features or hardware, this is just so they get as many people as possible on Android devices to spread out the advertising and get more people excited for development.

Buying the HTC One seems risky

I always like more and more competition since its better for the consumer. Just that the idea of buying the HTC One scares me regarding future support (updates / warranty / resale value) :-/
I loved my nexus one... but I'm sure we can all agree that HTC has been in a rough stretch sales wise. Less sales starts the bad spiral of less money -> less marketing -> less customers -> less pull with carriers -> less R&D -> less user base -> less accessories -> less support etc.
I guess I'm the only one that's worried to buy from a company that seems to be on its last hope
Of course the loyalists will flame me because they are protective of HTC's image and that's ok (because I can appreciate being a fan). But is there anyone else out there that has had this worry about buying the One as well? I'd like to hear your thoughts even if they are negative

HTC doesn’t seem to be doing too well lately, even after the big launch of the One series, and the much praised HTC One X smartphone. Yesterday they said that their sales fell by 45% in the month of July compared to the same month last year, from T$45.11 billion to T$25 billion ($834 million). The sales were also down compared the previous month by T$5 billion. - August 2012

Who said Android manufacturers didn’t deliver on their word? OK, maybe not always on software updates but HTC is living up to its promise of crappy sales. Earlier this week the Taiwanese giant announced it expected this quarter’s sales numbers to be down as much as 17% over the first quarter of 2012. - February 2013

March and April shipment numbers for Taiwan’s star-crossed smartphone champion may be gruesome indeed and it is possible that the HTC One won’t ship more than 300,000 units globally even during April. HTC can only hope that consumer interest will remain high even as the Xperia Z price drifts down, the Galaxy S4 debuts and the summer iPhone buzz starts peaking. - March 2013

HTC isn't going anywhere, and in the most extreme case they would merely be purchased off

Re: Buying the HTC One seems dangerous
As a proud owner of an HTC rezound (htc's long lost orphan child) r&d couldn't have been better. With our small community of talented devs this phone has countless roms, cm, pac, ported sense 4.x you name it...
R&D won't be a problem on the one, which will sell way more than the rezound.

I can agree with being purchase off eventually. But in the meantime, like a bleeding wounded animal, they would cut spending at various key departments in order to stave off having to be bought out... which cuts into the HTC One marketing and customer base, limiting the resale demand and market share for that phone.
Also if they are bought out / merged is there any thing guaranteeing a past 1 year, out of warranty repair could be given if needed? Say your 1 day out of warranty and your battery completely dies.

Being maliciously poisoned by someone or any other random car accident/plane crash type example is different than trying to make a calculated decision about an electronics purchase.
That would be like telling someone who is weighing the risks versus benefits of buying a particular stock "Ah who cares? you might get poisoned at Starbucks anyways."
I have used no smartphones BUT htc since the ppc6700 and I won't be buying the one. First and foremost I'm just pissed at the game htc pays with source code being released right before or after a version becomes replaced. Going with s4 if the fabled mastodon nexus 5 doesn't come to fruition in short order. I think the one is pretty much a one x with stuff removed (a button here, an sd card there) in that respect it's aptly named although it becomes a bit confusing. One x s v and now just one?

This isn't a thread to be mad at HTC and say all the reasons your are pissed at them and why you are not buying a One. The topic of this thread is simply talking about being uncertain/worried about buying a One due to risks of HTC's future. Please don't hijack the thread over other topics. Thank you :good:

HTC is declining for sure, but I don't think ut will be dead anytime in 3 years. HTC still holds cash on hand(earned before 2012). Their problem is going less and less profitable, not fighting for last breath.

I think you can be confident that this phone's lifespan will last at least as long as HTC will...part of that's unfortunately because HTC doesn't exactly have a fantastic history of supporting their own devices, but developers certainly do, and I have a feeling the One will be at least as popular with the dev community as the One XL was - and I think the XL still has a good, long life ahead of it.
So, even if HTC vanishes from the face of the Earth, devs will keep it alive :good:
Being someone who bit the bullet with Palm/HP webOS, I think that threads like these are ridiculous. If you like the phone, why does it matter? I received a number of replacement Palm Pres through my carrier even after Palm was bought out. If there is an issue with the One it will likely be handled the same way. As for resale value... If it lasts you two years you have effectively paid about 25 bucks a month assuming it costs 600 bucks. I think the One will probably be worth that to me, and that is assuming you won't get a penny in resale value.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but the phone you use every day has to be worth something to you, and maybe if the One isn't worth 25 bucks a month for two years, you could return it and get a GS4 or wait for something else instead of worrying about what it will be worth when you're done with it.

My apologies. As a die hard htc customer, I thought that my opinion might be reflective of the mistakes they might be making that you seem concerned about. That said, they are still one of the top (2?) manufacturers and are far from tanking. Support shouldn't be an issue. If you like that phone, I see absolutely no reason for concern.

Actually HTC has great update track record. I think only Asus is better. I would be more scared of buying Sony or Samsung. Especially for all the rumors that Samsung is leaving Android in favor of their own OS.
And don't forget that HTC decided to only have 1 flagship device they will update faster.
And HTC must have a lot of money left because in Germany their commercials are everywhere. And they are major UEFA sponsor. Only biggest company's can afford that.
And as it looks HTC One is selling like crazy right now. Not at all strange as almost all reviewers love it and praise it.
ap3604 said:

Like I said before HTC is not in a state where they are losing their business. They're just having lesser profit(income) compared to the past years. Now if anybody here thinks that $36million income in a quarter of a year is small then give me $1million on my paypal account right now lol!
And yeah having lower profit on the 1st quarter is expected by HTC.
1. They haven't released new phones.
2. They made budgets for the release of their HTC One(Where do you think they would get their budget for it?)
3. Obviously their past phones did really not sell out.
Now with the HTC One coming I'm pretty sure their profit would surge out this 2nd quarter. To think their stocks now jumped in by +9.65% they are obviously earning big time on the HTC One right now even considering it's not yet widely released and lack of availability.

HTC has had a hard time following a clear strategy for the last 2 years or so and still, they keep making profit.
The development and marketing around their new devices (and mostly the One) is expensive, and now that their flagship device is available, hopefully the situation will get better and better.

It's Quarter 1(January to March) profit statistics. We all know HTC didn't release much handset in the 1st quarter of the year yet aggressively doing pre advertisments of the device.
On the 1st quarter only a limited part of the UK market got the HTC One so it is to be expected.
Starting on April HTC released the handset on Taiwan, All of Europe, Middle East & US and this May they're planning on releasing the handset globally. So it really makes sense if you ask me.
Even HTC indeed expects this.
The company did not reveal how many units of the HTC One it has so far sold, but said it expected revenues to jump in the second quarter to NT$70 billion.

The revenues arent down too much..
Guess they spent a lot on the One.. getting parts, making the phone, market research, designing blah blah.
The One's sales will show in Q2
Guys did any of you notice that this whole Q1 HTC didn't even release the phone?
So calm down and let the HTC One rise it's stock. You'll see the results in Q2
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
If HTC posts a loss in Q2 then be worried. Like the others have said, Q1 nothing much was going on except the building of the One.
Why do some people say it's a sinking ship? They are still posting profits despite taking some risks and experimenting. Now that nothing has come out in that quarter... They are doing well.

That's because people here tend to earn more than $2million USD a quarter. So for them a company earning that amount is already a sinking ship lol! :fingers-crossed:
PLUS IF YOU NEED TO READ ABOUT HTC, PLEASE DONT GO TO CNET THEY ARE VERY BAISED TOWARD SAMSUNG

Actually the one interesting thing in the article I picked up on is Samsung is expected to sell *six times* as many GS4's as HTC will sell Ones.
Why did they even *need* to pay students to troll HTC boards? That's like the Yankees feeling the need to cheat to beat Kansas City.
Whatever you may think about their phones, I can assure you Samsung doesn't *need* anyone's support at this point. Now that they've beaten Apple, they *are* the new evil empire. I personally don't root for the "overdog"...
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
No one has to worried at all even if HTC go bust. The phone still works, you'll still be able to get repairs/parts or a switch to a different phone, and the world will not end. Oh, and HTC won't go bust either
I'm still pretty optimistic about HTC's future. The next quarter should be interesting once we have a better idea of how the One's launch sales stack up. In the meantime they're getting a lot of very positive coverage from all the major tech sites, which should hopefully push sales. The One is an incredible phone - hope it pays off for them.
If I was Samsung though I'd be much more worried about what Apple has up their sleeves. They're gonna have Sammy firmly in their sights, and if HTC are already sitting above them with the critics then they run the risk of potentially being shunted into third place, at least where the press are concerned. No doubt they'll still sell squillions though!
wont help with the number of replacements people keep needing.

HTC has special machines to replace parts within the device. Honestly...your better off sending it to HTC rather than getting a cheaply made part from amazon and doing it yourself....so no....replacements will be norm just like any other phone.
