[Q] How do you root a dev ed razr m? - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a developer edition Razr M off eBay and I wanted to know if it comes rooted already or just unlocked?
I have searched but can't find rooting instructions for a Razr M.
Would someone be willing to point me in the right direction, please?
I'm also wondering, with the new software update, on the dev ed it should still remain unlocked even if the update is accepted, no?
Any help appreciated - thanks!

Which update are you on?
Head over to Motorola's website, or better yet Google 'How to unlock RAZR m dev edition'. You will need ADB tools on a PC and some knowledge regarding rooting. Anyway, the Motorola website will provide a code to unlock your boot loader. Which you have to input via ADB. Than you can follow the rooting instructions on this forum. Be aware if you do it via Motorola's website you need to make an account with them.
I did this myself and it worked

Hey man thanks for the info - could you please help me just a litte more?
The instructions for rooting that I'm able to find here all seem to involve using the "exploit" but isn't that for non-Dev Ed/locked bootloader phones?
I already unlocked my Dev Ed using the Motorola website so how do I root from this point?
Is it the same thing?
Any help appreciated - thanks!

Okay well the link that I had to instruct me on how to root my dev phone originally has disappeared :/ My best advice would be to try the exploit method, as the method that I did was what I consider a 'manual' way to root the phone as you must flash each package one after the other. Next best thing you could do is ask someone else on the forum. Sorry friend I will still upload the files that I used if you want to have a crack at it.
Flash the recovery image followed by the superuser one via ADB/Fastboot. Worked for me, best of luck.

Oops - too late, lol...
I couldn't get CWRM to work for some reason so I ended up using TWRP instead.
Did a "Backup" prior to rooting, does that count?
Not planning on flashing any custom ROMs or anything..

So your still running stock? If so just go into your recovery and run a back up to internal or external storage. If internal than get it onto another storage location straight away. That way if you do in the future plan to flash a ROM you can go back to pure stock if you brick it.

Yeah, stock for now. I used to mess around with custom ROMs when I first got my Thunderbolt but I'm so much busier at work and trying to keep a girl in my life these days, lol... I'm not good enough at this stuff like you guys to do it quickly, takes me forever to read every post and trudge my way through the How-To's.
If I find the time, I'd love to run a stripped down, battery optimized, de-bloated ROM, something like that...
I did do a backup onto the SD card, I try to keep everything on the SD card. Bummed they make it so hard or not possible to run apps from it. Makes no sense to me but oh well..
Thanks again!

No problem mate If you need a hand just ask. Also AOKP is quite good. It is probably the second best for battery that I've tried with CM10.1 being the highest, not including stock of course. I run it with themes and the such. Its quite smooth and clean to with not so many features which is good if you just want things simplistic. Let me know if you run into issues

X-play custom rom

Hi I'm new to the custom rom's and instead of searching through countless topics, mixing up instructions. I was wondering if I could get some directions.
Play is unrooted 2.3.3. I would like instructions on how to put a custom rom on the phone, and which custom rom would be recommended. Thanks in advance people.

is your phone fastboot enabled? (does the notification light in the power button turn blue if you hold the search button and then connect the usb to computer?)
If you want a custom rom but dont want to search and read these forums, i give your phone a week before you brick it.

or we could help people within the comunity to understand what's out there, the risks involved and how to get around the problems that could arise? we all need things explaining to us once in a while.
Oh im sorry i see your point, it is always good to be helpful, i am trying to be helpful as well when i say you should search and read, i mean look at all the countless threads where people didnt want to read, theres like 3 help im bricked threads per page.
lol. i know what you mean. and i know it can be frustrating. it's just a shame that the play is so much more complicated than the x10 that i was previously on. it was all flashtool and update.zip stuff. practically unbrickable!! loved it. fastboot and adb complicate things, and i feel that some of the tutorials can be a little confusing to total noobs. so we need to be accomodating to their lack of knowledge (i hardly know anything, so i'm still quite noobish), but also, people need to accept their own actions and consequences. not sure what i'm getting at now, but things need to be simpler for people who want to start out
Actually the way of installation is exactly the same for any custom ROM in this phone.
1) unlock your bootloader, either for free if you bought a factory unlocked phone or for some cash sending Alejandrissimo a PM, which you have to use if your phone is branded and/or Sim locked. You only need to do this step once.
2) install a custom kernel. There are two: DoomLord's kernel and the Cyanogen Mod kernel. The latter allows you only to install CM7. Doom's allows you to install the others.
3) Enter in Clockwork Mod recovery and install the ROM you prefer as long as your kernel of choice supports it.
As to which ROM you should pick, I use CM7 because it's stable and fast. Visit those threads and see for yourself which is the one you like best.
my personal favorite (until cm7 became more usable, and also because i like dooms kernel) was zerojay's aptly named zerorom. it's a very clean and fast sony based rom full of optimizations and tweaks. i'm currently trying out the FXP028 release of cm7 to see if it's more to my liking than it was in previous releases.
Unfortunately locked to Rogers. Is there a free way of unlocking the bootloader and how?

You won't brick it, if kernel is incompatible device with either not boot, or bootloop, flahing stock rom with flashtool will fix it though.

[Q] MB860 on 2.2.2 - Where do I start

Hi,
I recently purchased an Atrix 4G for cheap and am now trying to update it to a more recent firmware version.
I currently have a:
MB860
on Android 2.2.2
running Version.4.4.20.MB860.Retail.en.DE
Checking for system updates through the phone doesn't yield any results. Threads on the web or this forum often lead to dead links or warnings about RAM problems or the possibility of bricking my device.
I'm not technologically retarded (as in I can jailbreak and install packages on an iPhone) but most of the update/flashing instructions aren't really helpful for someone who's just getting into android.
Where do I start?
I would start with the sticky at the top of this section (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984381), or skip to the 4th sticky (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423).
It is written step by step.
I'm not trying to unlock my bootloader on 2.3.4, because my phone isn't running 2.3.4. I can't find any info regarding help for people still stuck on FroyoYo there, either.
The bootloader is irrespective of the version of Android you are running. Follow the directions to unlock it first, install an alternate recovery and then flash whatever you like.

Thanks for the info. So doing this allows me to install Custom ROMs on my Atrix? While that is indeed useful, it doesn't really answer my initial question.
Is there a way to update my phone to 2.3.4 without rooting or unlocking first? I'm currently just looking for a stable webtop experience and decent battery life. If I get that on Stock 2.3.4, I might wait with the flashing experiments.
Go to settings, about, and check for updates. (if memory serves me correctly)

You DO NOT want the latest stock update if you're planning on doing tinkering down the road. As far as I understand it, one of the latest OTAs pretty much blocks you from unlocking the bootloader. (Same for the Photon)
With this phone, if you put your faith on Motorola, you get royally screwed. I would break from the shackles sooner rather than later.

revdep-rebuild error
For what it's worth:
Editing /usr/bin/revdep-rebuild.sh with nano and changing 2 instances of /var/cache to /preinstall/var/cache resolved all my problems.
More specificly:
line 262: "$WORKING_DIR" != "/var/cache/${APP_NAME}"
and
line 559: local tmp_target=var/cache/${APP_NAME}
Good luck.
just follow the official CM guide for atrix. that's the best

[Q] New to this Forum

Hey guys. If the title didn't apply, I am new to this forum. I just came from The evo 3d. Switched to this phone. While I think its very cool, I noticed that this forum does not have many ROMs or mods to play around with. That's ok. This phone is only a couple months old so I'm sure with time, more and more development will occur.Anyway to my point. I noticed that my phone is very different than my evo 3d than what I was used to as far as just flashing a recovery and installing a rom or kernel inside recovery. Gaining full s-off etc..
My questions is can someone show me what's different as far as gaining s-off
Method of installing roms
If someone would be kind to point me in the right direction that would be great. Thank you.

Its the recovery that we use with Motorola devices without an unlocked bootloader similar to twrp. We can flash basically anything but kernels and radios I believe. It also forces us to partition our internal memory unfortunately...but it also allows us to boot into multiple different roms without losing settings or apps

Thank you guys for all if your very informative information. I will look into these links that were provided for me. I usually go and learn everything I can about a device before attempting to gain root, s-off, or unlocking boot loaders. So far I learned that its not possible to unlock boot loader or gain s-off. Believe me when I was on evo 3d. HTC made it very difficult for us to get s-off by patching up the exploits in the hboot by updating it with every ota update. Luckily, we had some very talented devs to get past the patches and come up with solutions.
I only hope the same could be done with the droid razr's boot loaders. I am just spit balling but would it be possible to petition Motorola to come up with an unlock method and post it on their website like HTC did. Again just spit balling lol

[Q] Challenge: I've messed up my new RAZR

Hey XDA! Just picked up new Droid RAZR M (XT907) and immediately messed it up on the first day. So here's the deal:
- I'm an idiot.
- Got it with 98.30.1 FW, so I used this method to root it: http://www.droidviews.com/root-verizon-droid-razr-m-razr-hd-maxx-hd-latest-firmware/
- Forgot to unlock the bootloader
- Installed ROM Manager and flashed CWM recovery
And this must have messed up something, because now I'm not able to:
- Unlock my bootloader
- Get into recovery, it returns this error: "failed to hab check for recovery 0x56"
I'm clueless now, since I have not much knowledge in this stuff...
I'd be so thankful if anyone could help me
Thanks!
Edit: Will this help me? http://www.phonearena.com/news/How-...-M-back-to-stock-ICS-from-the-JB-leak_id35580
Edit 2: Okay, so that didn't help, but I used "DROID RAZR M Utility 1.20" from mattlgroff and I was successful with bringing OG recovery back. However, I found out that the bootloader on my build just can't be unlocked. I also tried to install Safestrap and install CM on another slot, but it failed with status 6. Why is that? Or is there just any other way how to install any ROM?

Thanks, but I don't need that. I just expected a simple answer. So I'll just answer myself, sum up what I needed to know. Correct me if I'm wrong:
- There's no way I'm going to unlock my BL, I'm stuck with locked BL on my build
- There's no way I'm going to install CM (not even using SS)
- I can only wait on official Motorola KitKat update (coming in months???)
- I can also install some stock-based ROMs with SS
Yeah, I don't wanna Safestrap with custom stock-based ROMs if it can't be official CM. I'll rather keep my internal storage space with stock, disable bloat and wait for official 4.4.2 update...

I do apologize you fell this way about the members here at xda... Here at xda we help a lot of people, take time from our day away from our loved ones to assist those in need... Avi helps a lot members a lot of members... You have to understand that your issue your question has been answered and resolved several times prior to this post... I'm sure just scrolling through the topics reading the titles you would have found the answer/s to your question/s (probably answered by Avi)... I understand the search feature of xda may not result in what you are looking for but google will... We do get very tired of answering the same questions over and over again... So i apologize for the "negativism" but Why help those who won't help them selves... knowledge is power and reading is the key...

To answer your question, yes to all. And before you jump so quick as to label this typical xda attitude, keep in mind I can label you typical self entitled noob expects everything on a silver platter. People get tired of answering the same question a hundred times over... Guess your number in line. Anytime you're dealing with a locked BL it's a good idea to learn all the intricacies of your phone, which is precisely where you were referred to.... And precisely where I had to start too. That said, politeness and gratitude will get you farther in getting noob answers quicker, which none of your posts contained.
Thanks! I'm sorry if it sounded rude, I'm really grateful for any type of help. I've spent like 5h in all kinds of threads, but most of the time I just get "half-answers" from just reading and reading and reading. I'm not expecting any type of extremely thorough answer, just a direct answer with confirming of what I said. Sending me another link (which I already read) just makes me even more confused. I just found out for example, that Koush's Helium doesn't work on Motorola devices. Does that apply for root method, too? If so, are there any other alternatives to backup & restore on my RAZR M (without and with root)?

There's already a specific thread for M7 RUU's.

But there are no Android 4.4 KitKat RUU.exe files on.
i've already told it crushalot, i'm sure he'll add them asap. further i've already provided the link you offer here in his thread, so no reason for another RUU thread
I have send them a message to about a week ago but there is no respons.

lol man, it's not that i want to steal his "thanks" or something. i just think it's better to keep the forum clean and keep the equal stuff together in one thread, so it's better to find for everyone. and if there's already a specific and usualy well maintained thread for this topic. so i think it's best to just post the link there (@justin2003) and not open up a new thread (just to get attention/thanks or whatever the reason was).
people that are looking out for 4.19 RUUs will search in the RUU thread and find the link and thank you. and as soon as crushalot has some time to add it, he'll do it. that's it.
Until the RUU thread gets updated, this thread is fine.
I'm a little concerned with the community spirit shown here. @Justin2003 has done nothing wrong, by posting this, he even stated that he PM'd @crushalot but with no response.

This is a little concerning, just because someone posts something doesn't mean they're hunting for thanks (which are worthless, just look at mine ) or attention (this is the internet, who cares ).
Save the hate for the iPhone crowd.

Nothing to be concerned about! i just thought to do the right thing by indicating to keep the forum clean based on my own experiences with thread openings.. not all mods think the way you do but nvm, let's stop here.
Cheers

Look at Bugsy Lawsons RUU thread...all download links are removed. I think, the thread can also be removed. It´s better to have one more chance for a download, if something like this happens again.
Sorry everyone, I can't dedicate nearly as much time to the threads I used too due to a new demanding job with no access to post during the day and more family duties in the evening.
I will work on downloading the updated RUU files and get them posted on my site and on the collection thread I started.
I am not purposely trying to ignore anyone, but I get at least 20 support request emails and 5-6 PM's per day and as I stated I just don't have the time to answer them all.
Thanks to Justin2003 for creating the thread with the links.
I do not need attentions or thanks but i know that there are a lot of people who wants back to stock without first s-off the phone to downgrade the hboot.

Thank you Justin, the official RUU helped me restoring the device in pseudo original state (still unlocked, with supercid and S-off ofcouse) but without having to mess with reconstructed, dumped and/or skeletonized ROMs.
Sorry for the noobish question but after reading through the myriad of "Help Me!" threads, I've gotten a bit confused on what can/can't be used with all the different security & lock states. If I'm S-OFF w/ unlocked bootloader, can I run the ruu.exe? Or am I better off waiting for a decrypted ruu.zip?
As far as I understand it, I believe I can pretty much run anything w/ S-OFF and it's up to me to make sure that what I run is compatible with my device, lest I risk bricking it. Is that an accurate assessment? Are there any avenues to restore that cannot or should not be used while S-OFF? Are there any that would require relocking the bootloader while S-OFF?

You understand correctly.
You can do anything. With great power comes great responsibility.
Occasionally an RUU won't work because your HBOOT is incompatible or your HTC drivers aren't current or your CID or MID is incompatible. Generally you can fix these things and try again.
The two most common things that brick phones are a failed HBOOT flash or trying to S-ON with a non-stock HBOOT.

Thanks for this link.
(downloading right now)
Sorry for the noob question but I'm facing a bug with my HTC One running 4.3, so I want to try 4.4.2.
My phone is rooted/unlocked and I've installed CWM recovery. All of which I want to keep !!
OTA 4.4.2 update would not install due to CWM recovery.
Will this .exe file allow me tu upgrade to 4.4.2 without the need to remove CWM recovery and SuperUser ?
Thanks for your help here.
Sounds like what you want can be accomplished by either reverting to a stock recovery and accepting the OTA before putting CWM back, or just flashing a 4.4.2 ROM in your custom recovery- either way this discussion probably doesn't belong in this thread.
Note flashing Kit Kat manually requires a compatible recovery and S-OFF, I believe.
The OTA should preserve your settings and data.
You may or may not be able to keep your settings and data intact if you go the manual route.
If you do an RUU you *definitely* won't be able to keep data:
Real, complete, signed RUU's from HTC rewrite everything. The erase your pictures, they install a stock recovery, they touch every partition.
(There are some firmware-only and other hybrid packages posted various places in this forum that behave like RUU's but are more selective in which partitions are touched.)
Merely flashing a ROM only really touches /system (it also touches /boot and /cache technically). Depending on how stable the result is, you may also choose to erase /data in a separate action.
To clear up a point about terminology, root access is something that is usually baked into the ROM you are flashing. RUU always leaves you with a stock, unooted ROM. Flashing almost any custom ROM automatically gives you root as a side benefit. Root is not the same as S-OFF.
Anyway, you probably don't need an RUU unless you get into serious trouble. Until then, you might want to ask for more help over in Q&A...
