[Q] Dns problem - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I have a phone I am setting up at work for someone. We have a wifi at work and when trying to connect to internal website it is give me an dns error. Other websites work fine. I have tried several different browsers. The only the site uses is JavaScript and I have it turn on. Thanks in advance for the help and by the way it is ATT version.

That sounds like a VPN issue.

I am not connect to vpn. I have another phone LG Optimus pro and that loads the same webpage with no problem. Both on the same network. The website is very basic website.

Hmm. I'm not sure what the issue could be then. By any chance are you using a custom ROM? I know that a few have modified hosts files.

Non working WiFi or Mobile Web on Cyanogen ROMS

I'm stumped. And agitated.
I'm stumpitated.
Every Cyanogen-based ROM i flash, I cannot get Wifi or mobile web to connect.
This is true of all current Froyo builds (all Cyanogen) and roms like Droid Does.
Weird thing is, I can get connected to wifi and ping local computer IPs. But I cant ping any websites or load them in the browser or apps.
I am flashed to MetroPCS. Haven't had any problem in ROMS like PlainJain, xtrROM, Evil Eris, etc.
Anyone have any troubleshooting steps or insight? Thanks in advance - I love this community!

Not that I'm aware of - how would I find out? Do the ROMS themselves not define the kernel?
Beyond that, why would it work in all other non-cyanogen based ROMs?

I said Wifi doesnt work for me, not for you. Thats the issue altogether - it seems isolated for some reason.
I tried KaosFroyo, CELB and the CM direct, as well as DroidDoes (TCP's new cyanogen based). Can't get Wifi or Mobile to work on any other them. ROM doesnt matter, it seems to be anything cyanogen based for me.
Grdlock, Ivan, xtrRom, xtrSense, EvilEris, etc have all worked for me completely though - non cyanogen based.

Its just such a weird thing, and I feel limited by it, and the fact that it seems to be so isolated is irritating.

Guys,
I know it works on other peoples phones. Not being rude, but I dont need a list of people who its working for. I'm asking for some help, some direction, some possible things to check.
Not to be off topic.. but can someone direct me to the CM direct ROM? I haven't seen that anywhere. Sorry if thats a stupid question lol
Its just the one with CM in the post title.

Try my flash for metro here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730289
As always make a nandroid backup first.
Make sure you have booted your rom at least once successfully before applying my flash (it modifies the telephony.db that will not be present until after the first boot)
The problem you are running into is that in the build.prop the carrier info is still pointing to verizon, once i changed mine to cricket it worked, i assume changing it to metro would work for you as well.
I believe metro's proper MNC should be 310024 if you want to edit it manually, if i recall off the top of my head, anyways my flash should set that for you and get you squared away.
EDIT**
Actually sorry i mis read this, my flash will not assist with WIFI but it should get your mobile network to route through metro's proxy and get MMS working.
This sounds like a ROM issue if wifi is not working, or something hardware related.

Already running your flash, boss
Doesnt make a difference on these roms for me.
Works nice on xtrROM, though
Hmm, so to clairify if you use CELB 2.8, boot it, then flash my flash, then boot CELB then reboot CELB that you still do not get mobile web/mms?
Weird, almost sounds like your not getting DNS or something.
if you do an NSlookup on like www.google.com, then on the phone try to ping the number you got from nslookup, do the numbers match or what comes back?
I think that this flash won't work for some Froyo ROMs for whatever reason.
Either Autostart doesn't start up (did it ever ask you for SuperUser permissions, ever?)
Or
u2nl needs to be in a different place (worth investigation)
Or
Your proxy is set correctly, so wifi is trying to go through the proxy (which may not work), but something else isn't working correctly, so wifi is looking through the proxy, but something ELSE is wrong with mobile network.
Do a nand backup
then restore yourself to a 2.1 ROM and make sure it still works.
Is the first condition I listed at the top of this post, the case? Or did it ask you? 2.2 might have a superuser issue with Autostart. That'd make sense, since the Proxy might be working (which would be why your internet won't work when wifi is on), but your Mobile Network won't (which, of course it wouldn't, of Autostart wasn't starting up).

Sorry, but I don't know what there is to "check". There are NO options or configurations necessary with the WiFi setup.

K, CELB 2.8 was the first Cyanogen rom to work, thats cool - but it didn't work with your flash. I had to do the manual input from the guide. I already had autostart.sh and u2nl in my root - does your flash overwrite them? still, even if it didnt, it should have set the right permissions, right? I wasnt until I input all the shell commands that I got mobile and app web.

This wouldnt explain while neither Wifi NOR mobile web doesnt work on either. I can't get either to work all all, and they both work on regular 2.1 OTA Roms (and now CELB 2.8)

I use xtrROM 3.0 day to day, and its always worked. So yes, it still does.

Autostart asks for permissions, so I assume its starting i'll try again just to confirm. You mentioned the Proxy might be working which would cut the wifi - how do I get around that?

When I started loading a video Hulu said it is not supported on this platform.
I don't think it is a browser issue... what player does Hulu use?
Mine continues to go back to custom after I leave the menu. Still being sent to wap sites which is getting really annoying.

And what (if any) differences there are between this and the stock Samsung FroYo browser?
Also, I believe Hulu enforces viewing policy based on information it receives from Flash itself, not based on the browser user agent. Hence, different browsers/UAs shouldn't matter.
I can confirm that the "about:useragent" trick works on Cognition Beta 2.2 v9. Only problem is it doesn't persist if the browser is restarted. Still very useful though.

[Q] Cannot send email (not gmail)

Using the built in email client I can no longer send email's. I get the on-screen message of "Saved as Draft". I haven't changed the programs configuration to cause it. I did install Droidwall, but I disabled it as a test, no effect. I did also as a test change the outgoing server to a different one for my ISP. both the original and new servers SEEM to test right, i get no error when the email client tests the settings, but I don't get a Success either. I am also on my home network so no issues there with it having to handle extra security by coming through another ISP.
Anyone seen this on the email client in HC3.2?
@Nova5 - My few thoughts on this problem. What is your setup? i.e. (1) Are you rooted? (I'm guessing you are) (2) Are you using a custom ROM, if so which one? (3) Are you using a custom Kernel, if so which one? (4) Have you installed any updates which might be causing the problem?.
I use stock "Email", personal preference, because I like it better than "Gmail" and don't experience any problems. I'm on "KEKINASH's near-stock 3.2HC ROM with stock Kernel". This reply may not directly help solve your problem but may give you or others food for thought.
it was the rooted stock iconia 3.2 rom found on this forum.

Very little if any difference in the rom I'm using. In which case it's cold comfort and not very helpful for me to say that Email runs with no problem on my setup, both receiving and sending. At a loss to suggest why it doesn't run for you. Perhaps some other poster might have an inspiration.

Nova5, since this worked previously and it looks like you installed a firewall (DroidWall), it does sound like the likely culprit. Have you tried uninstalling it instead of disabling it? I'm not familiar with that software but disabling it may not necessary be stopping it from blocking access.
Keep us posted.

Having a issue with a stock Nexus 7... When i try to log into a website ie. Amazon, Vodafone and a few others it refuse to log in to the page! All Google associated apps work perfectly fine, I'm though it may be a problem with secure sites but can gain access to my banking perfectly fine.. Have done a factory reset and the problem still persists. Can this be fixed or should i get on the blower to Google?
Thanks in advance

Try a different browser. Some sites don't play well with some browsers. Some sites I use can only be used properly on my laptop actually.

Then obviously its not the tab.
It doesn't know what kind of connection you have, only that you have one. So it must be an isp issue if the sites worked at a different location.
You may have to live with it, or call your ISP. Do the sites work on your phone?
She'll be quite disappointed if you exchange and the issue remains.
Again, if you've tried different browsers, and it is all the same....then it isn't the browser, and it cannot possibly be your hardware.

Well, exchange of you can and want to. Just don't be surprised to see same thing happen. Unless you accidentally did something very strange to tab to cause the issues.
Good luck!

Hulu App problems

Hey guys
My issue seems to be different from the others I read.
I'm in Canada so I don't get the option to install Hulu Natively. When I download it and install it from the APK repository, it goes crazy. I either flips endlessly between Portrait and landscape until it crashes or I can't click on any of the buttons in the app to log in.
I've tried different versions of the app and different input methods but nothing seems to help.
Any advice?
thanks
Try another source of getting the apk. If that doesn't work, it may have connection issues.

Thanks for the thought I've tried a few sources no luck. Connection is fine too.
Sorry, I wasn't being specific enoug about the connection. Hulu is not avaliable in Canada. You'll need a proxy or VPN to access this data, which is why the connection isn't working, hence why the app is freaking out. It shouldn't need to check if you are outside of the US because as far as it's concerned, you can't install it to devices outside of the US, so it just plain fails hard. The rotation you are seeing is the app crashing, and attempting a recovery, but the connection fails every time, so it's stuck in a crash loop.

Most probably you are trying to install the Hulu app for Android phones/tablets to your Shield Android TV. You should be sideloading the Hulu Plus for Android TV app. Go ahead and download it from http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/hulu/
Wouldn't you still need an app like hola VPN so you could get a US IP? You should be able to side load it.
