9505g on ATT help wth LTE - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

got the google edition in the mail today and set up the PTA apn to try to get LTE on it...
out of the box i got no data at all and the PTA apn doesnt work either.
im stuck usning the old cingular WAP for H+ on it ... called att AND google at the same time and ATT is sayng they cant guarantee i will get LTE since its not an ATT branded phone. Google is saying it should work and told ATT they are full of **** essentially..
any help?

Let's start with the stupid questions. After saving the pta apn did you click the green/blue bubble on the right of the apn

No. This should work out of the box. I was on the phone myself with AT&T and Google for two hours. It's a simple matter of AT&T changing the data plan to LTE, but they won't do it because they do not recognize the IMEI as an AT&T phone. No need to change APN settings. AT&T is basically screwing us. In the coming days I see a LOT of complaints coming. The customer service reps say there is nothing they can do, the network people say there's nothing they can do. Complete nonsense. Now, if you had an LTE data plan PRIOR to switching out phones you're probably going to be OK. It's those of us that were on 3G that will be screwed.
EDIT:
Well, after speaking with endless reps, I found one who was willing to actually do her job. She was sympathetic, did some research, and put in a phony IMEI number that allowed her to upgrade my plan from 3G to LTE. I guess the moral of the story is be persistent, hang up on the reps that say there's nothing they can do and keep trying till you find a rep willing to do their job properly.
By the way, I kept my unlimited status, no worries there.
FUNNY:
I had a call from a sales rep before the issue was fixed. Her solution was "why don't you return your phone, go to an AT&T store, and buy one of ours?"

which is what i was afraid of since i am on the grandfathered plan for 30 bucks unlimited ... no way in hell im going up to 40+ bucks for 2 GB of data.
and yes, i did choose the radio button for it.
they sent in some form to allow ATT to recognize my IMEI which might allow LTE to come in.. i asked about the plan and everything and no one said it wouldnt work... altho i had feared some people might have been told otherwise.

doing research actually, i did find that i even posted that question a few months back somewhere here on XDA...
would you need an upgraded plan to get LTE on ATT even if you have the grandfathered plan ?

You don't need the PTA APN anymore. Just one named phone.
Here's what I have that works perfectly on LTE:
Name: (whatever you want)
APN: phone
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: not set
Password: not set
Server: not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Auth Type: not set
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4
APN roaming protocol: IPv4
Bearer: unspecified
MVNO type: none
This worked perfectly out of the box for me. I was reading somewhere that they don't really use the PTA APN anymore because that was when they were first turning on their LTE network and now this "phone" APN auto detects and works normally.

right, the issue is i didnt have an LTE phone prior. I had a 3g GS2 so my plan isnt configured to work on the LTE network.
for the Iphone they were honoring the old unlimited data plans for 30 dollar a month just changing the name of the plan to the new one (same price, still unlimited, upto 5GB before throttle)
someone just did this on the phone for me and i did get data using the phone APN now (no more using the old 3g only APN)
hopefully when i get out of the building i work in i can get some LTE reception and see if it worked.

If you haven't had an LTE phone prior, you probably don't have LTE data enabled through AT&T yet. What data plan are you on specifically? Does it say 4G for Smartphones or LTE for Smartphones? I'm thinking you're going to have to talk to AT&T and get them to switch your plan...

thats what they just did. they had the LTE plan unlimited for 30 a month they grant to grandfathered data plans when the iphone 5 came out
i am getting data on the PHONE apn now but still no LTE speeds...
i will call back later on in the day if i dont see LTE speeds coming in (speed test now only gave me 4 down)
they also apparantly sent in a form to get the IMEI covered by ATT which would guarantee they can provide :LTE speeds

went by att store and the guy there said it happens all the time with devices from south america (im in miami)
went to the back, grabbed an IMEI off a boxes device. applied that to my account... BAM ... LTE

I had the same problem with a rep telling me that the phone can't be found in their system. From the research I've done, it looks like you can give them any IMEI number off of a AT&T branded LTE phone and their system will switch your plan over.
Here's a good thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2021401

Well, I was trying to fix my apn settings on my sgs2 import because I was not getting mms messages and I used the "Reset to default" feature in the apn menu. I got three new apn settings that replaced the ones I had put in manually. The new ones are: ATT PHONE, ATT WAP, and BROADBAND. The settings seem to match the ones that are commonly sited for AT&T "4g" phones. So my guess is that AT&T recognized something new about my phone and gave me the "new" sgs2 settings. I used to get the Cingular 410 settings. Everything is working fine now.
You may want to just try Reset to default. I have the new AT&T "4g" sim and I am in the DC area just for reference.

To anybody on a grandfathered unlimited plan or the data for non-Smart Phones plan don't do this. I did, and like the OP said, it overlayed new default settings. These setting don't work unless you're on a 4G data plan. I lost all data connectivity afterward. I deleted the new (now the default) APN settings and replaced them with a new APN I had to create with the orignal settings. I'm also guessing for this to have happened that AT&T now recognizes the international SGS2 as a 4G phone running on their network. Otherwise, why would the default APN settings suddenly change? I hope this doesn't mean the end of the (almost) free ride we've been getting. So any APN settings posted from the AT&T version of the phone will be useless unless you're being billed for an official 4G plan.
In case anyone needs them, below are the standard settings:

Just to clarify, I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan, have a 4g sim and had my account changed to the use the 4G SOC code : HSDPPB. So in my case unlimited data and 4g are not mutually exclusive. I am getting the same speeds (6mbs - 8mbs) as I was when I manually entered the recommended setting from the "fix your apn" thread but now my mms is working.
I am not recommending anyone do it or not do it, just sharing my experience.

Anyone on a 4G plan, no matter how they got there, would benefit from the new APN. Anyone on a 3G plan will lose data connectivity. I get up to 8MB down in a fake-4G area using the Cingular 410 APN on a 3G plan. I get 3MB down at home in an area that's not been upgraded.
APN Settings for 3g on AT&T
Hi everyone. I added a new APN using the settings that BarryH_GEG posted. I had just bought the SGS2 I9100 off eBay. It was bought at a great price. Now, when I had put in my Sim card, it was not recognizing the data network. Weird because it showed my Sim contacts and my Sim and Network info in the About the Phone section in Settings. Because of this forum, it now reads my Sim along with the 3G ATT network. I was starting to get pissed, then realized it was just the APN settings. Now everything works great. Best phone I have ever owned. Thanks again BarryH_GEG for the settings info..

For those trying to getthe i9100 ICS XXLPB AT&T settings
After reading many threads, stretching my Google-fu to the limit, flashing many modems, and spending an hour on the phone with AT$T Tech support, I found a solution and will try to pay it forward.
First roll back to XXKPA modem.
Then create two APNs.
The first:
(Enter only the listed values. Leave all other fields at their default values. )
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
APN Protocol: IPv4/IPV6
APN Type: default,supl,fota,dun
***SAVE!***
Then create the second:
Name: Broadband
APN: Phone
APN Protocol: IPv4
***SAVE!***
Select the radio button for Broadband APN.
Enable and then disable Airplane Mode.
Then you will see the 3g/H+ icons flashing and you are done!

The APN depends on the type of DATA (3G/4G) that is provisioned (SOC) on each individual's account.
1) wap.cingular is the correct APN if your account is provisioned for 3G DATA
2) phone is the correct APN if your account is provisioned for 4G DATA
With regards to the 3G/H/H+ icon that depends on the cell site and not the APN configured on the phone. With GSM technology, the phone tells the cell site this is what I am capable of and the cell site tells the phone what it is capable of and then the phone utilizes the best possible option.
As an example, if the cell site is upgraded to HSPA+ the phone will display H+, if the cell site is only capable of UMTS it would display 3G.
Dan
Here is a thread I started a while back that discusses my findings with APNs on AT&T...

Basically, the pta apn worked best and you have to be on the LTE data plan and have an LTE sim to use it. More information is in the thread I posted.

IMEI Number

I live in a very small town in West Virginia and the closest AT&T store is an hour away. I was wordering if anyone could give me an IMEI number that would help me get my new note up and running on the at&t network. It would save 2 hrs of driving.
Thanks
Kevin
IMEI number is the unique ID of your phone. Each phone has its own. Your IMEI is printed on the box and inside the phone behind battery. You don't need other ppl's IMEI because it is counter productive and doesn't help you get the phone activated. What you need is an AT&T SIM card, like the one you already have on your existing AT&T phone. Simply pull that SIM card out and put into your Note and you're done. You don't need to activate anything if you already have an active account with AT&T. When you first connect your phone to AT&T, they will know your phone's IMEI right away.
foxbat is correct if you already have an activated ATT SIM card. What you may need to set up is the APN to get the GNote up and running. If you do there are several thread on the APN's, or just ask for help.
This is the APN I am using: EDIT: This is for a 4G LTE SIM card that I also use in my Skyrocket. the 3G APN Is different as foxbat points out.

Please note that Phone APN may not work for everyone. If you already have an AT&T 4G phone, Phone APN will work for you. If you only have a 3G phone, your data plan is not upgraded to 4G plan. And Phone APN won't work for you.
The best APN to use is the old 3G APN called WAP.Cingular. It won't affect your 4G speed, at least not yet, and don't require upgrade your data plan to 4G plan (which is just a phone call away).

Ok, I'm a little confused. I read the following link on how to get my unlocked note fully functional on AT&T and it stated to go to the AT&T store and get an IMEI number.

So I don't need to do that, I need to activate my sim card and then set up the APN once the account is activated?
Thanks
wap.cingular should max out at 7.2mbps, phone should max at 21mbps

Yes, I'm a little confused on this as well. I just posted a question in that thread, so hopefully, someone can clear things up for us. I have an iphone with at&t, so can I just put my sim card in the note with an adapter, and I should be good to go? I want to make sure I don't lose my grandfathered unlimited data.

You will be very lucky to get HSPA+ anywhere near 7.2mbps. On top of that there are plenty of ppl using wap.cingular reaching 9mbps speed in certain areas.

AT&T unlimited plan flagged after minutes in P6800

Got my P6800 today...
I've read here (and elsewhere online) that I could simply use my current AT&T SIM (unlimited grandfathered data plan with iPhone 3gs) and as long as I don't go crazy with BW, it should go unnoticed.
So I did (just for a couple of minutes to make sure it works), and a few hours later I got a text msg and an email from AT&T suggesting that I call them to get "an appropriate" data plan.
So it looks like they flag a tablet right away and not based on usage. When I signed up (before the age of tablets) I don't remember them specifying anything that prevents me from switching but I'm sure it's somewhere in the fine print.
I'm not a heavy data user but I don't want to give the unlimited plan unless I have to. Would be happy to hear some thoughts an recommendations on how to handle it.
Thanks
O
P.S
the 7.7 is awesome. just sux that AT&T ruined my happy day with that email :-(
Have they actually throttled your speeds? I'm not your lawyer, but you could just ignore it for the time being.
Past experience
I had the same experience last year with the Tab 7.0, with phone capabilities. I had an unlimited plan with old iPhone. I had to switch to I believe 4G per month, plus tethering cost about $10.00 more, once I did, never a concern or a problem since. It is their way to eliminate all unlimited plans.
At least that was my experience. I believe when it occurred when folks got the 7.0 w/phone (European version and custom ROM) if you don't respond, soon your data will be cutoff, so then you have to call or pull Sim card. May not be true today, but it was last year, happened to me.
What APN were you using..? Was this from an iphone 3g,3gs,4,4s..? If im correct when you get an iphone 4s the account is provisioned for hspa+. I am using a sim from an iphone 4 and have yet to receive a message. So it seems strange.. ive had my tab for a few weeks already...

Greedy bastards, thank god the merger didn't go through. I can imagine how many people will jump ship once the T-Mobile - att roaming agreement goes through and all those iphone users join T-Mobile

Been using ATT Prepaid for about 2 weeks and no problem with that.
mine is a 3gs iphone. Not pre paid card.
Dont think they changed anything. The email said i need to call them to get a suitable plan.
I dont stream and never passed 2g on my iphone so i should be ok with a 3-4 g plan but it still feels like a rip off.
I doubt ignoring it will make it go away. Im just wondering if there is any chance of arguing about it and win...
O
Try adding an APN named Broadband with APN Broadband (leave all other settings as default).
Broadband is the APN for the ipad.. i think if they are auditing that APN he would get flagged for sure as his device in the database should be an iphone.

So, would it be possible to add whatever APN is used for the original iPhone 3gs and (maybe) bypass their flag?
I'm using the Broadband APN with the SIM from my LTE hotspot and I've received no warnings from AT&T. Now, it is a business account so maybe I've got some leeway.
Your on the radar already to a degree so i cant say for sure but the wap.cingular apn would be the one you need... Just verify the settings below because i am going off my head....

So far, I guess I've been lucky. The most I've received is a warning that I'm in the top 5% of data users, and that I might be throttled. I have a little more than a week left in my billing period and I'm currently at just over 4gb of usage.
What pisses me off is i pay a couple hundred a month for 2 unlimited voice & data sims and 2 unlimited data sims.. you would think they would want the business. But they seem to be hell bent on the unlimited user witch hunt..
Sent from another Galaxy...

Looks like the APN is already set to wap.cingular (attached)
I wonder what made them flag me right away. Oh well...
It could be the UNLIMITED DATA plan... It would make sense they audit UNLIMITED DATA accounts to make sure you don't "change devices" so the minute the IMEI is changed its sends an alert and an SMS is dispatched to you.. i am just speculating.. i havent tried my UNLIMITED DATA sim in my 7.7 as i keep it in my Galaxy Nexus, but i'm going to try next week and see..
I've had my ATT SIM in my 7.7 several different times making calls, texts and using lots of data and haven't got the text/email yet...

Yeah that was going to be my next question too. If you were on just a smartphone unlimited plan, I suppose you should be ok. That's what I'm on and I haven't run into any issues (yet), apart from supposedly being throttled for being in the top 5%, but that's not the same I don't think.
P.S. I just called in to customer service, and apparently, based on my IMEI, they know that I'm using an "unlocked Samsung GT-P6800," but this has not affected my account in any way at this time. I am still on a smartphone unlimited plan, and thus far I haven't been throttled (yet).
Interesting...
Just spent an hour on the phone with AT&T until some manager put me on hold for more than half an hour (on purpose?) to check the price of the 3gb plan
For now I told them to keep me on the unlimited plan (will keep using the iPhone) until I decide what to do.
Since the 7.7 will only work on AT&T, I guess I don't have many options...
Not a big fan of AT&T at the moment...

[Q] Slow data speeds on AT&T?

Ok, so I just got my N4 last night and so far I am very impressed with it, especially being my first android phone. However, the data speeds seem quite slow, can someone please help me out?
Using this APN I am connected to HSPA + on AT&T but am only getting around 1 Mbps both up and down. Does anyone know what could be causing me to have such slow speeds?

Are you using a Direct Connection with AT&T?
Or do you have a MVNO SIM or AT&T Prepaid SIM?

I'm on an AT&T family plan with a sim card pulled from an iphone 5. (Not sure if I answered your question, im not on prepaid though)
I have the same issues. I signed up for at&t family shared 10gb for 3 lines a month ago. I have the GS3 and 2 iphone 5's. 2 weeks ago i bought the nexus 4 and the speeds are bad compared to LTE. I get 3-4 down and 1 up. I used the following APN settings. So far its the best one's that work.
http://forums.androiddoes.net/showt...to-get-good-AT-amp-T-HSPA-speeds-with-Nexus-4
the Nexus 4 works best on t-mobile in the US only because they support HSPA+ while at&t is HSPA and LTE.
AT&T is building up their LTE markets and not upgrading their current HSPA.
Are you referring to the pta one or the phone one? On the pta one I don't get a data connection.

Ok you do not get any data with pta apn because your sim is not provisioned for LTE(even if LTE is on your plan). My daughter had an iphone 4s(we have a data share plan which includes LTE) and I switched her to my GS3. She also didn't get any data using the pta APN. I just called at&t and told them they needed to provision it for LTE because the LTE apn wasn't working. They put me on hold, provisioned the sim for LTE and had me reboot and then the PTA apn worked. It was the same deal for my mom when she went from a HSPA+ phone to a LTE phone. She got no data at first until I called and told them her old phone was HSPA+ and her new one was LTE. That's when I learned they have to reprovision it. Of course they wouldn't need to do this if you had originally had an LTE phone

That's the thing, my iphone 5 was lte.
Just an update, checked on the AT&T site and it says my account is provisioned for LTE yet the PTA apn does not work? Any help?

Could it have to do with the Nexus 4 not supporting LTE, only HSPA+?
Could you post the APN settings you are currently using? (Make sure its the one with the blue dot across from it)

Do you mind testing a few things?
If so, Could you press the menu icon (bottom right corner) in the APNs settings, then select restore to default.
Then power off the device, Open APNs Settings again, and check to be sure the default APN (Should be the only one listed) is selected (Has the blue dot to the far right) then wait a few second, and power the device off and on again..
After devices is back on, check your internet, go to any webpage (other than a google one)
If still not working fast enough, go Back to APNs settings..
Add New, and try these settings...
APN: wap.cingular
User Name: [email protected] (Case Sensitive)
Password: CINGULAR1 (Case Sensitive)
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Auth Type: n/a
APN Type: internet + mms
Bearer: unspecified
Delete the First APN... enable the one you just created (press the radio button so that it turns blue)
then restart the phone.
Remember this phone does not support LTE service, so you may need to have your account provisioned to HSPA+ and not LTE.
Note: The can provision each line of service individually, just not sure if it can be done that way with the Data Share Plans (they did not have those when I worked there.)

New NEXUS 4 APN Settings

NEXUS 4 APN Settings
Has anyone seen APN settings like theses and can you explain why they work?
Name: Straight Talk
APN: wap.tracfone
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32
MMS Port: 80
I live in Columbus,Ga using a T-Mobile sim on straight talk and tried everything I could find even ST customer service and nothing worked well. Then 1 night on straight talk CS chat the rep gave me this and now I get HSPA+ and 4G all over the area. What I don’t understand is the APN: wap.tracfone and the MMSC with cingular in it. All of the other APN’s I found at XDA, the net or straight talk never used those two items. Also I am using a hybrid radio flash but have been using various combinations of APN’s and radios since I got the phone and the APN is what made the difference.
I'm in Tmobile classic plan and my data has been slow the past week or so, not sure why. I am gonna try this APN just to see what happens, it is working, but I'll see how fast it is.

if it's cingular, then you probably actually have or they converted you to, AT&T

Thanks, that explains the cingular and Straight Talk does have, or had ATT, sims I have a T-mobile sim. I still don't see how an ATT APN works with a T-Mobile sim.
MMSC = multimedia messaging service center. Data does not use this unless it is MMS related. How is your MMS working? The other fields could be standard and you would actually be going thru T-Mobile for data.

My data is fine now, where before I was getting no data Again with this new APN I am getting data coverage in my area where until I changed to this APN I could not get coverage. I even asked at the local T-Moile store about coverage and they said that in my specific area coverage for data is not good but w/this change I am a happy customer.
was working. may be my fault i try again

Any status report on whether this new APN configuration improved T-Mobile classic plans Data speed?
