VZW Software Update inside - RAZR HD General

Here is the Droid Razr HD software update. I have not tested it as I use CM 10.1 and have no interest in going back to stock. I found it on www.droidrzr.com in a forum post then shared it on my dropbox account.
I posted it on my Dropbox account so not sure how long it will last until the link is gone:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d2x9vutel4vnqmm/Blur_Version.9.16.6.XT926.Verizon.en.US.zip
It does "fix" the bootloader unlock exploit though

So, stock recovery to install this?

I would assume you would need to be 100% stock, including the recovery, to install this.

hmm put it on my internal storage and its not found, I think stock recovery wants to see it on a sdcard.

If your boot loader is unlocked before the update, it should stay unlocked. You just will not be able to unlock with methods out there now.

I received the OTA today on my Max HD. It was build 9.18.79.

A few questions I haven't been able to find answers to (many threads have been started on this new update topic and I haven't found the answers I'm looking for yet):
1) I've heard that there are two versions of this update, 9.20.xx and 9.18.xx... Anyone know the differences yet? Is one version for phones that have been unlocked and the other for phones that are still locked? Is one version for XT925 and the other for XT926? I received the 9.18 version, I am rooted, unlocked, and have a XT926 phone.
2) Anyone with an already unlocked bootloader try and take the update? Do you remember which version of the update you took? Did it install correctly? Are you still unlocked?
3) Anyone that is rooted and unlocked try to take the update? Did it install correctly? Are you still rooted and unlocked after the update? Did you have to protect the root with either SuperSU or Voodoo OTA Root Keeper? If so, do you mind posting step-by-step instructions for protecting the root so the phone is still rooted after the update?
Thanks to all who can shed light on these questions!

There are 2 different versions, depends on what System version you have of 4.1.2 on the XT926 only. The 9.18.79 version would indicate that your Systems version is 9.16.6 if this is not correct DO NOT FLASH. I am Rooted/Unlocked, if you take the plunge you must OTA Rootkeeper/SuperSU backup SU, as the update breaks Root> IF there is no backup of SU with the latest binaries. If you lose Root, there are a couple of ways to Downgrade. A common problem for those of us Root/Unlocked the Update FAILs at the end. Most of the Update goes through, however the new Radio does not go through, as of right now if you Update and your Baseband is VANQUISH_BP_100730.081.64.09P then you have the OLD radio, the new Radio is VANQUISH_BP_100730.160.64.15P.
Between the 2 OTA's these should match-up as either 9.16.6 = 9.18.79 or 9.16.9 = 9.20.1

Thanks for the reply! A few more questions if you don't mind (would hate to do something wrong... like I did last time... luckily I was able to revert back to an original version and fix the install... sigh...):
4) With protecting root, I need the SuperSU Pro version, yes? To be able to use the survival mode, yes? Will Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper do the same thing? Is it possible to use both "to be sure"?
5) I have everything backed up with Titanium Backup. Should I bother getting the pro version and backing everything up using the cloud backup and hypershell? Or won't this matter since if root doesn't keep I won't be able to use Titanium Backup?
6) I also have performed the VZW Wireless Hotspot hack using SQLite. Am I going to have to undo the hack in order for the OTA update to work?
Thanks again for all your help!

Update - I decided to attempt the update and hope for the best. System update 9.18.79.xx updating from 9.16.6.xx.
I purchased the SuperSU Pro from the Play Store, and used the survival mode in SuperSU. I also used the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and protected root. I figured if one didn't work the other might... Voodoo worked to protect and re-install root access (not sure about SuperSU as I tried Voodoo first to restore root after the install).
I am unsure if the bootloader is still unlocked, but from what people have said there doesn't seem to be a reason to believe it is re-locked. I haven't tested it out to know for sure though.
It appears that the entire update installed correctly. No errors, and the baseband version was updated to the new radio (xxx.15P).
I did not undo the VZW Wireless Hotspot hack prior to installing the update.
Hopefully this post helps others out there.
My final question... what does updating the radio/baseband do exactly?

i need help! i tried installing the update but i forgot i had TWRP.. so the update did not got installed, i rebooted the phone, but the OS tried to install the update again and inmediatly reboot the phone in recovery again .. then from recovery i flashed liquid smooth rom but i got stuck in the boot animation... my big issue is that my power button is broken! now i cant reset the phone to enter in fastboot mode.. i cant do anything... now my battery is totally drained and i cant turn on the phone (my power button does not work).. i can plug the usb cable and the led turns green. but i dont see any more options

My suggestion, let your phone charge a bit.
Once charged up, turn it on and get it into Fastboot. From there you can use the DROID RAZR HD UTILITY 1.21 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307439). In that utility option 1 will bring you back to complete stock ROM, option 2 will bring you back to a stock recovery. This will completely erase your phone.
This should at least give you a fresh functioning phone. If you want to try to keep your data or personal files, I'm not sure what you could load via fastboot to get yourself a functioning phone again (maybe just a kernel?).
As a side note, I used TWRP to load the update and my phone updated except the radios it seems. It sounds like the same thing happens with the stock recovery.

I tried to take the 9.18.79 update I protected the root (I'm not unlocked) before I did so I also temporarily un-rooted (I've always been told to do this before and update) Now I an no longer rooted and it can't find any SU binary codes. Gonna have to flash back to 9.6.16 and try it again I guess or stay on 9.6.16 in order to maintain root for now. If you find a solution please share.

I agree with Lenny. This same thing happened to me when I tried to take the liquid smooth ROM. Follow his instructions above. You'll lose all your pics, vids, files, etc. But at least you'll have a working phone again.

Went smoothly here
All my devices except this one are rooted and some are rom'd. I thought long and hard about whether to void this warranty but decided one day it would be out of updates from VZW and I would want to flash something. I have been denying the OTA for the last day so I figured now or never.
Here are the simple steps:
Download and install Moto device manager (for the USB drivers) here
Enable USB debugging in developer options on the phone
run motochopper here
run motoapocolypse here
install voodooOTA root keeper from Play and backup root
apply OTA
It went error free. The phone has the 15P radio update, unlocked BL and root.

I want to confirm something, you unlocked the bootloader and then took the OTA and the bootloader remain unlocked (and stayed rooted due to root keeper)?
So the benefit to all this would be to get the new radio update?

Yes, the bootloader won't get locked again after it is unlocked. Moto would be shooting themselves having to reinstate warranties if they did that. Yes I wanted the option of flashing later becuase the ota will install sooner or later. I also want to stay on the upgrade path for now to have current radios.
I still have an Eris lying around that is long out of support but i have gb on it.

that's what i want to do, but i cant because my power button is broken! so i cant enter to fastboot mode without the power button.. i will have to open my phone and try to fix the power button myself.

Just to make a point and to clear up any confusion, this Update will not lock the Bootloader. If you have an Unlocked Bootloader then you will have an Unlocked Bootloader after the update, regardless if it fully works or not, and even if you lose Root, the Bootloader will still be Unlocked. If Root is lost with an Unlocked Bootloader, I suggest downgrading through an FXZ of either 9.16.6 or 9.16.9 and restore Root.

new update can't root now.

i run unrevoked and nothing happens. this a new problem with the new update? this is my replacement phone anwaysy so.
anyone know anyways to root? i can't downgrade to old version. please help..
if you have s-off you just need to flash a custom recovery.
if you don't then i have no idea if the updated rom is rootable.
that would have been something to look for before upgrading
Good luck!
Having custom recovery is not the same as rooting (Superuser acess). Unfortunately, at the moment, Unrevoked won't work on the new OTA and if you install SU pack after the OTA it will just hang during boot up and you'll be in reboot hell. You can have Clockwork with the new OTA, just not root access.
downgrading to stock then s-off and upgrading work?
update. i tried downloading the super back to stock thread and the hboot says the file is older and i can't by pass it.. so hmm
I am in the same boat. Just got the phone and the f-ing salesman decided to install the OTA for me while he was setting it up. So do I return this thing in the hopes of getting one without the OTA or is it likely it will be rooted?
guessing no ones able to do anything with the new update to reroot yet huh... any manual way to actually do root or downgrade to where the hboot doesn't recognize it as a older version?

Nope, can't downgrade...I'm out of ideas. Pretty pissed off actually to the point where I'm ready to take it back and get one that doesn't have the god damn OTA applied. I HATE owning devices that I don't really own.
i rooted with unrevoked. it will stay waiting on root or something then you stop kill the program after phone is booted up.
imma be lazy and let you do the work but...
1. use unrevoked (not forever) http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.21/reflash_package.exe
2. wait for it to say waiting for root and phone is restarted, then exit unrevoked.
3. place clockwork mod on sd card as pb31img.zip http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/recovery/clockworkmod/PB31IMG.ZIP
4. go into recovery(volume down + power button) and let it detect pb31img and let it install
5. then use clockwork mod to install superuser apk manually http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6408470/su-releases/su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip
and yes this works, because i done it to 3 phones already
and yes this isnt hard...think outside of the box
I seem to have a problem. I was following the Bob Denny procedure to apply the OTA. Everything was going good until I got to the second step of booting into HBoot and reapplying the Clockwork recovery again. I cannot get into the Recover option in HBoot, it gets me stuck with the triangle over the phone image. I can boot normally and the phone is working but no root. In addition if I plug the usb cable into the phone, it charges but will not allow me to connect the phone as a disk drive, as well as the USB Debugging option is not there. I went to settings and tried the Connect To PC option but it FCs on me. The OTA part of this was successful (if you want to call it that). Any ideas on how to get this rooted again? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Cary

if you have clockwork mod installed with S-On and updated the ota already, you can flash unrevoked forever through clockwork recovery... that will take S-Off to off. I was messing around earlier and did that..
I am not sure how you got clockwork installed. Everytime I try it recognizes the PB31IMG and then just skips over it. It never asks about installing it.
The file name has to be PB31IMG.ZIP right? Also the LCD works different right?

Would the old downgrade and root process work? I upgraded my stock INC to 2.2 before Unrevoked worked on it. I went through a fairly painless, albeit time-consuming, process of downgrading to 2.1, rooting, and then installing 2.2.
I would think the process could be utilized here, the only difference being specific files used. One may even be able to follow the process as is. The end result would be S-OFF, which would allow you to do whatever you wanted (upgrade to 2.2 + recent OTA, install custom ROM, etc)
If anyone gets this to work, please let everyone know.

Warning - Newb question about updating to 98.18.78

I've been searching the net for the past few days and can't find anything specific to my issue. I'm hoping one of you guys can help me out, or at least point me in the right direction.
I'm currently on 98.15.66.xt907.en.us and I've gotten the OTA message, but any attempt to update fails. I had some bloatware frozen, so I unfroze it, pretty much back to stock, but the OTA update still fails. I have always been rooted, and I attempt to protect the root with Voodoo.
Yesterday, I took the further step of UNLOCKING my bootloader. So, now I'm unlocked, rooted, and I'm running TWRP 2.5 for recovery.
Here's what happens now, if i attempt to install the OTA. The file downloads, it reboots my phone, which immediately launches into TWRP. I don't really know what I'm supposed to do at this point, so I just click "Reboot system".
It gets stuck in a boot loop...it loads all the way up, but goes back to "Shutting down" (assuming to perform the OTA upgrade again) within a minute or so.
At this point, I have to do a Restore in TWRP to make my phone stop looping.
What I would like to do is get the upgrade to 98.18.78 and be on my merry way. I can't seem to find the OTA file for download, so I can attempt to install it in TWRP. Not even sure if that's possible.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.

I would NOT accept the OTA - the main purpose is to install a security patch to prevent you from unlocking the bootloader.

I was under the impression that once the Bootloader was unlocked it could never be "re-locked". Are you saying that's not the case? My BL is currently unlocked. But, I would like the bug fixes that come with the OTA update.

correct. however, in accepting the OTA, the phone tries to enter it's own recovery, and since you have replaced it, you are getting the error picture.
I think I read somewhere that some got a hold of the updated radio, so you can flash that if you like. but otherwise, no "real" bug fixes.

Actually, not exactly the case. Since we haven't had something like this (retail phone getting unlocked by exploit) involving moto phones, we don't know that it can't be relocked. For all we know, moto could OTA an update to the bootloader that makes it ignore the fuse entirely. We just don't know. Hence the warning about taking OTAs

98.18.78 update

I have a Motorola droid razr m model XT907. It's rooted and GSM unlocked. I'm using it on Straight Talk currently. Verizon is pushing this 98.18.78 update which I hear unroots the phone. I want to know which of the verizon apps I need to freeze or remove to prevent this update.

Just a heads up, you posted in the Razr HD forum, but no big deal the procedure will be the same for both. When I was running stock ROMs, I would freeze the updater.apk in TiBU to prevent OTAs. However, the new update is rootable with Motochopper 1.3, but you can't unlock the bootloader. If I was in your situation, I would unlock the bootloader now, take the update (for the improvements it offers), re-root it, and unlock it for GSM again. Once your BL is unlocked and you have a custom recovery installed, all you have to do is flash SU in recovery to regain root.
I thank you for the answer. You make it sound so easy,. However, I needed step by step instructions to get where I am now. Can you point me to some to do this? I've unlocked the GSM a couple of times using CellZealot's post. That's no problem. I have titanium backup to freeze the updater.apk, but what is TiBU? I'll get Motochopper in the meantime.
Duhhhh, I just figured out what TiBU is.

If you don't want to unlock the bootloader and want to take the OTA, then root afterwards, you can find Motochopper 1.3 here:
http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/t...oot-razr-m-xt907-for-locked-devices-on-91878/
If you want to unlock the bootloader, look for Motopocalypse here (you'll need root access for this, so unlock prior to updating. The OTA does block the ability to unlock the BL, but does not block the ability to root):
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Template:Motopocalypse
Once you unlock the bootloader, look for the TWRP thread in the Development section, there should be instructions, along with the file you need to install the recovery. Once TWRP is installed, get the updater SuperSU .zip and flash it in recovery and you will re-gain root. If you want to update after unlocking, you can take one of the several stock ROMs running around here and flash in recovery.
SuperSU: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Long story short:
- You can stay as is, by just freezing the updater.apk
- You can OTA and re-root with Motochopper 1.3
- You can unlock bootloader and re-root afterwards.
Thanks again. I'll work on this tomorrow and post back.

Ok. I have the bootloader unlocked. I downloaded a rom from here. It's been cleaned up of bloatware and stuff. I have SuperSU and updater SuperSU, but I dont know what to do with it. I also installed TWRP manager. I need just a little more guidance.

Ok, so first, you need to disable the install-recovery script. I built an app to do this (YOU GET TO BE THE FIRST TESTER YAY!)
Install this app: ftp://kd8rho.net/RecoveryFlasherDisabler-public-test.apk
Choose "disable install-recovery"
That will (theoretically - can't test cause my phone's rooted and ROMMed) allow you to install a custom recovery without any hassle.
Once that's done, follow the installation instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226729, starting with this line:
Next, choose your recovery. There are 2 options, TWRP (Touch Win Recovery Project) and CWM (ClockworkMod)

You won't have to boot directly into recovery because that app *should* fix that for you. You can boot the phone normally after installing and run something like "adb reboot recovery"
I downloaded and installed your app. When I ran it, it said the installer was found, but disabled. moving on to step two now. Thanks
Hello. This is way off base but does the update fix the screen glitch? Are there any roms that will fix the glitch?
Thanks in advance!
Xt907 JESUS IS THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIGHT! *BE BLESSED*
The screen glitch isn't fixed from the update. It might be better. I have a hunch the new radio isn't good for customers with unlimited data in areas with 4G coverage. My phone seems more eager to switch to 3g after the update. Besides that, I can't tell this update foes anything positive. It would be nice to use fastcharge while powered off but for some reason my device will not turn off while it's plugged in. It used to turn off and charge, then one day it quit working. If my battery is low enough and I turn the phone off the green light glows solid for s few minutes then the xt907 turns itself on. Can I downgrade to the previous radio or am I stuck with the new 3g friendly radio that presumably serves Verizon's purposes and not mine?

Yea...all I did was flash the radio and it feels like I'm being throttled now that I have the new radio...still on the.3/.78 just with the new radio... I'll try and flash the old radio here in a min ... Are you on an unlocked bootloader?

Unfortunately I am locked. Bought the phone *right* after the may update. I migrated from the droid incredible, which has an open bootloader I believe. So it's been pretty rough after having that phone!

What "screen glitch" are you talking about?
Oh, I forgot to post back. I managed to screw it up royally. But I have it straightened out now after a flash.
The screen will occasionally glitch on the left side, pushing the screen right and changing the color for about 1-2 seconds

the recovery "kill" the otas, not the root.
so you have costom recovery you will get the ota but you will be unable to install it, if you use jest a root and have stock recovery - you fine and will get the ota.
So i can update rooted lg g2 over the air when a new update comes out

you right.
if you use stock recovery you will get OTAs
if its stock and merely rooted then OTA should work
For the OTA to be accepted, you'll need the stock recovery for your device. Rename it to recovery.img (if it already isn't named that) and then move it to sdcard root (/sdcard).
Now, use a terminal emulator (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm&hl=en) and open a command prompt. The command we're using has two parameters. The the "if" parameter refers to your input file, in this case, this is the recovery.img file you moved to your sdcard root to flash. This could be any recovery (TWRP, CWM, stock, etc). The "of" parameter is the output file and is the actual physical path to the recovery image your device uses. At the command prompt type this:
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
If you already have the stock recovery then all you need to do is press "Accept" or "OK" or whatever the dialog asks when it pops up letting you know about the update. I'm not sure if the stock recoveries are different for each carrier, so you'll have to find that yourself.
Edit: By the time I finished typing this I see that you already are on stock recovery, so you should be good to go
Idk mines flashed to stock and rooted

Just bought a g2 and am thinking of rooting to enable the auto hide of the on screen menu buttons. So correct me if im wrong but if all i do is root, leave the stock rom and do nothing apart from root i will still get ota updates.
But the update can remove root right? So is there any way I can keep my phone from automatically updating and losing root? I don't want to lose root... Mainly cuz i love not having software keys.

Try the above or remove/freeze whatever the apk your carrier uses for the OTA. There's a couple threads around with more info.

Another question: (don't want to start a thread for this)
If you have custom recovery (In my case TWRP) when an OTA lands, obviously I won't be able to accept it.
I'll need to flash it through TWRP correct?
If this is the case will this simply apply as OTA's do and not delete any of my data on the phone etc?
Also is there a stock recovery I can download just to make things easier??
First time I've had a phone rooted and with recoverybefore it's update cycle is over, and Google isn't really being all that helpful
How to backup stock recovery?
I just picked up the G2 two days ago and rooted pretty much immediately (via ioroot10) but other than that, I'm still running completely stock. I saw some recent posts stating that it was now possible to install TWRP or CWM on the D80010o firmware, so I decided I would go ahead and take the OTA update and then install a custom recovery. However, I have tried install the OTA several times now and every time, when the phone reboots after downloading the update, I get error "0x1117008" when the OTA tries to install, and then the phone reboots to system and I get a popup stating something to the effect of "This device is suspected of rooting. Software updates will not be available for rooted devices." Checking the software version I see that I'm still on D80010d and the 10o OTA update is still available and has to be downloaded again.
Anyone else have this issue?
And no, I have not installed a custom recovery yet.

Nice to see you here dude.. may remember me from the rocket? Anyways, i'd just skip the OTA. It's nothing life changing. I'm still stock/rooted on 10d. Waiting for bugs to get squashed on 4.4.2 before I start flashing. Rather enjoying stock for the time being. Not really sure why 10o won't take. Haven't seen anyone else mention this. The only thing that has been brought up repeatedly is bootloops in twrp after taking the 10o OTA.

I am having the same error but don't remember seeing the same pop-up, just says install failed or something like that. I'm on Verizon stock Rom rooted. I've done plenty of mods by manually pushing them through, but I have the stock recovery and no custom recovery.... So safe to say, looks like you can't update with root. Gonna start searching for unroot then re root after update is installed. Doesn't seem like there is another way to do it. Anybody know if the temp unroot via superuser apk will work?

I am still investigating. I've unrooted via Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and a little extra housekeeping, and the Rooting Status does show "unrooted" in the About Phone section. However I still get 0x1117008 when trying to install the OTA. So perhaps the "unrooted" in About Phone may be a prerequisite, but is not sufficient for a successful OTA update. Maybe either the update is doing more checks for rooting evidence than the RCT daemon, or perhaps there is some other change that is triggering the error.

[Q] Another Rooting Question

The majority of my phones have been HTC so not really sure if unlocking the bootloader is normal procedure for a Motorola phone to obtain root. So i have a couple of questions on rooting this device, I'm happy to stay on a rooted stock so don't really see the point/need of unlocking the bootloader at this time.
1) Do you have to unlock the bootloader to root? or is there a method to root without unlocking the bootloader.
2) If the bootloader does get unlocked can it be relocked at a later date and would it show it had been unlocked?
Thanks in advance.

It can be relocked but then it'll be just "re-locked" not "locked", that means it'll have a different status.
Also note that you void the warranty just by obtaining the unlock code from Motorola; it doesn't matter if you've actually applied it to your device
If I unlock the bootloader and root, will I lose OTA updates, right? So, if I do this, how will I update to Marshmallow, when it's available?

With root you'll lose ota updates if I'm not wrong, but you can always flash the updated full firmware through fastboot or rsd.
If you're rooted, you're free to install any ROM you like. The Devs here at XDA got your back when it comes to updates. Every time the latest Android version came out for my past 2 devices I got it through ROMs from here way quicker than the carriers delivered it. That's not certain for every device, especially older ones, but it's up to you.
I will say since Motorola has kept the Android OS "pure," there may be a chance that this device gets Android M fairly quickly. However in my experience, developers on XDA seem to be able to squash the bugs so much quicker than the carriers.
Good luck in whatever you decide. Myself, I haven't unlocked or rooted since I just got this phone a few days ago. I'm keeping an eye on the forums to see some more ROMs come into play and the tweaking to be more common place with solid procedures. Though, I am itching to root just to get a working LED light. I'm not crazy about this Moto Display that blinks once with a notification and if I missed the blink, I never know something is waiting for me.

Yes.. I'm considering to root mine X Play for be able to change the kernel and get the LED working (and maybe some optimizations). It's not prioritary, but I want. I won't install a custom ROM, because I like Moto Voice to much and I know we lost it.

No, custom Roms do not support moto voice nor will they ever. Active display is all custom Roms provide.
This is my second moto x, I had the original moto x from 2013 and hated moto display.
