Porting ROMs for exynos 5 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, so so here is a thought. Since the stock ROM for the I9500 and the Korean SHV-E300 has all of the lib files necessary for creation of a ROM, why doesn't someone just use those to try to port a ROM over to see how it would actually work? I just came from the Exhibit 4G and that is pretty much how our device tree was created. Using other phones and our own libs. I know it would take a dedicated dev to do this or attempt it. But in the end it should be very rewarding. Tell me what you guys think.

any dev that can verify this ? possible or not ? any port rom would do Ex. MIUI Rom

It is kind of like porting but not really. It would be using all of our already made drivers that are in .so format and then using partial or full frameworks from the custom ROM sources to build. Just look at it like taking Ubuntu 13.10 and running Gnome 3.8 on top of it as the shell. Neither one of them get along with each other but there are ways to make them coexist and work well together.

Using Gingerbread as a base presumably?
Given the amount of "non-standard" hardware in the SGS2, you'll need support libs from either an existing non-AOSP OEM firmware, or from CM7 won't you?
great.. i hope u will port in a bunch of days

Lol no he can't. There isn't a FULL system dump of the Galaxy Nexus yet. There is only the dump from the SDK. He will probably theme it like Ice Cream Sandwich. Anyways good luck to the dev
source is the power, says cyanogen. wont this be useless when the sources are released? wont this feel like wasting cuz when sources is released, other devs will easily make those ICS roms, instead of porting it.
well anyway good luck to the dev!

That's not the point. Of course, a dump would be a lot better. But being the first to port and get a working SDK rom... Now that's where the fun is
It is possible, we have the full SDK ROM.

I for one don't see this working as every device seems to be getting the same LibC error at the moment (except for some reason the G2).
The best hope seems to be getting a HC rom to work then using the boot.img from that to boot the ICS sdk port. (this is what we believe happened with the G2 to get it to boot)
I would be satisfied with the new gmail application including widget
Cheers!
Looking to try .Hope you have a great ICS.

You can flash AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon roms on N7105

There have been some roms on chinese forums which can be flashed on the various Note II devices except N7100. And these roms did not have a modem included as part of the package. Therefore, technically there should not be any difference in the hardware other than the 3G and LTE modules.
I have tried flashing [ROM]VLALJ2[11/27]The_Hybrid| the ONLY TW hybrid rom .... Tablet UI at any DPI .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002960 and there was no problem with it. Although I have not tried other roms, i assume that any roms for the different variants that do not include a modem can be flashed. If there is a modem included in the package, you can overcome this issue by flashing the N7105 modem after flashing the rom.
Would be great if you guys can share your ADVENTURES trying the other roms and if they worked the way it has worked for me!

nah not wrong, alot more involved. I'm gonna try porting a ROM over tonight myself. Until an AOSP kernel gets built for our device, we have to stick to TW based ROMs, but it looks like madmack is making such fantastic progress that may only be another 24hrs away! Then we can look at porting CM10

no worries...I'm in Australia, so only just started work an hour ago, still got almost 10hrs before home again, then time to try porting. May be moot attempt, by then someone in a different timezone may have already done it! If not though, will try spin some magic and post results.

This rom here: [ROM]VLALJ2[11/27]The_Hybrid| the ONLY TW hybrid rom .... Tablet UI at any DPI .... http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2002960 is almost like Panandroid except that it does not have app per dpi. You can give it a try first if you want while waiting for a port. I am using it at the moment and it has been not too bad so far.
Any AOSP based ROM's will not be able to be ported yet, including Paranoid - no AOSP kernel available (yet) to work with our device. Only stock based roms (HD Revolution for example) can be currently ported across. Things might change tomorrow, as the people looking into the at&t stuff almost have a CM10 working kernel. Given their hardware is almost identical, would give us a good starting point for a n7105 CM10 build
ok, 3 restores are enough for one night! No success, I suspect there's different files involved on our ROM than the other variant. Will look into it again over the weekend when I have more time to scan

Yeh, the original thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018411
That's what I used, but I think there's a few more dependencies got n7105. I also noticed one of the files madmack lists in N/A in N7105 deodexed roms - ./system/bin/secstarter - so that may be a problem. Need to spend a bit of time re-checking dependencies for n7105 roms then have another crack.
I managed to get Android Revolution HD 4.2 to boot by swapping out the files listed (apart from secstarter), editing build.prop and changing the modem, kernel and perseus kernel for n7105 versions, but there's still some minor network bugs.
Each time I reboot i get an invalid sim message and have to dismiss a sim unlock code window, but after that phone calls and data work
Also the rom does not see hspa+ or at least does not display the h+ icon. Under settings>about device>status it will say "Unexpected" under Mobile network type when the connection is active
Overall it seems to run quite well though...

Need a file from your phone to build GamerzROM for S2!!!

Hi, I'm building GamerzROM for Galaxy S2 after 2 devices. But need a file from your phone to continue. If you can send me this one, I can continue.

I hope you can help me fastly. I want to release it fastly. Have a good day everyone.

Don't have it here, not using CM now, but you should be able to fetch latest CM 10.1 image and extract the required file in very short time.
BTW what is the idea behind your rom? I mean, what is the main difference between your rom and the other CM derivatives?
Z
It's a bit ironic that you are building a gaming ROM using a base which is probably not the best suited for gaming at the present moment. Anyway, Good luck with your project. (I am currently away from my place ATM and won't be able to provide you with the file. If no one does by EOD, I'll do it)

[Q] Building OmniRom from resources for i9100

OK, so I am not a dev.
And iam completely newbie
I saw some people saying that if you have aosp on your device it's much easier to port omnirom for your device
So can I use CyanogenMod 10.2 that is available for the i9100
To build omni
And is there any detailed instruction on how to build it !!

I9100 needs some work because of its unified kernel, building it right now is pretty much useless if you don't know where to put your hands to solve some issues; I want to try it too but this project is in a early stage so I'll wait

Yup. There are two MAJOR blockers right now:
1) We haven't merged and tested the implementation of BOARD_SUPPRESS_EMMC_WIPE yet. So if someone were to build for a Superbrick-vulnerable device, they would have a a build that risks triggering Superbrick. While I normally don't like having moderators take down builds for something, if I see builds for Superbrick-vulnerable devices show up, I'm going to work with the mods to have them taken down until EMMC wipe suppression can be verified.
2) The build system needs some changes to permit TWRP to be built on userdebug builds. Right now, the only way you'll have a chance of working recovery is with an eng build.

Can we not use cm10.2 smdk4412 kernel, @Entropy512? EMMC_WIPE is disabled there?
Also, would there be any problems if one were to remove Omni bootable project and replace it with cm10.2's?

No, because it could still cause damage if flashing from an old "unsafe" kernel (see the first few CM10 builds as an example...). These are far rarer now than they used to be, but there are, believe it or not, occasionally people who are flashing stuff starting from TW ICS.
And CWM has tentacles throughout the CM source tree to get it to build. It requires too many hacks in too many places. TWRP is more standalone, the limitation being that on devices with standalone recovery, Dees_Troy always built using the "eng" variant instead of "userdebug".
There's a patch that allows for TWRP to build properly on userdebug using "make recoveryimage" but it fails to allow building of TWRP into unified-recovery devices like Sony pollux_windy/yuga. (Samsung requires even more hacks...)
Even the Sonys which are "sort of" working aren't ready for builds yet - for them to work they're dependent on the FOTAKernel trick Dees_Troy developed to allow for alternate recoveries to be put on a device.
Does the above apply also to the i9100g? It has an OMAP4 processor instead of Exynos so it should be easier to build for.

I'm fairly certain the G has unified kernel/recovery just like most of the rest of the galaxys2 family (exception being the Qualcomm-based ones).
So it might build, but recovery will not function at all until the build system is fixed to properly support TWRP on devices with unified kernel/recovery.
It has nothing to do with Qualcomm vs. OMAP vs. Exynos, except that for whatever reason, Samsung actually allowed the recovery partition to serve its normal purpose on the Skyrocket and Hercules. Actually, the Straight Talk variant of the SGH-I777 might work, as that oddball device actually DID use its recovery partition.

Also I went to release with a prebuilt TWRP 3.0.101 kernel but XplodWilD say me that this will get Semi-Official maybe, and only compiled non-touched ROMs will be released.

What am I going to lose if I install a custom rom?

Hello, since Samsung is not releasing Android M for this device I was thinking of using a custom rom. Obviously I am not going to have TouchWiz but I was wondering if everything else (e.g. the S-Pen) is going to work fine.
Also, I see that for now there is no official CyanogenMod 13 for this device. Does anyone know if it is going to be released?

Porting M will be a b*tch.
First off, there are beta builds for Samsung's top dogs only so far, and only the most impatient devs would go porting an unfinished firmware only to have to do it all over again once the official stable build drops.
The porting itself won't be easy. Quite different bootloaders, devs had troubles porting the S6/Note 5 because our stock firmware for now is 5.0, and those of the S6/Note 5 were 5.1.1. Libraries, APIs, frameworks, etc. might be troubling once porting starts because yet again - our stock firmware is based on Android 5.0, the new on 6.0.
So, be patient, young one. The future is coming.
What about the feature that will be missing from CM?
Is the S Pen going to be usable as an input device for drawing and such?
