[Q] Watching DVDs? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Would anyone happen to know how to watch DVDs on the galaxy S4? I am trying to watch Dexter (which usually consists of 4 episodes per DVD) and would prefer viewing shows on my phone rather than a TV or on my computer.
When I open the DVD I get a video_ts and audio_ts folder if that matters and I have tried converting it into an MP4 format, but the picture does not work out very well. Also, the DVD contents is about 7.15 GB in size so I am unable to put it on my phone due to a lack of space.
If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated

You could try winX dvd to mp4 ripper

Unfortunately that did not work says the DVD is encrypted. Thanks for the reply though!

Okay I figured out how to, for anyone having the same problem I just got a program called aimersoft which allowed me to convert the episodes into AVI format

handbrake with vlc installed on your computer will do everything you need for free

I use AppGeeker DVD Ripper with success.
It has default settings for many of devices such as iPhone, PS3, S3, etc. (S4 may be built-in now), and allows you to alter the file size and video quality.
I have no idea whether this software will work for you but worth giving it a try.

Me and my nephew have both been using Dvd catalyst for a few years and it is very fast, it`s on special offer at the moment at $9.95 , also the support is next to none the creator spends a lot of time on xda helping people with getting the best results from the software.
https://www.tools4movies.com/
I do not have any connection to the seller, it`s just such a great product i want to tell everybody.
EDIT : have a look at the thread below to see some of member dvdcatalys`s posts.

Web Video content encoding

I'm building a small home media server, instead of buying a prepackaged solution, I prefer the challenge and reward. But I'm having a hell of a time getting the encoding of video down. I can encode most videos in my library in about 45 minutes each, to what ever format I want but I can't figure out the best format to use.
I'd prefer to stick with an open format, theroa or webm, but neither of those seem to work across all of my mobile devices.
Supposedly gingerbread allowed webm to work, but that doesn't seem to be the case on my epic, and the xooms honey comb doesn't appear to support it. Way to go Google for supporting your own container format.
Anyone have any luck with any particular formats? Streaming wise?
I'd hate to go h264 because I prefer to support everything open, and I really won't be using HD because most of my stuff is ripped off of DVD not bluray and I don't necisarily want to eat up the bandwidth over 3g when I'm not streaming from home. Especially if my ISP takes notice that I'm running so much up stream traffic, and find out I do have a webserver running.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
I should mention I am trying to stay html5 compliant and avoid flash.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
Last I checked for VP8, libvpx is the only encoder, and xvpx won't be around for quite a while longer.
It's hard to get around the ubiquity of H.264. (It's not only for HD, BTW.) Not only is there a high-qual, free encoding tool available, but plenty of supporting software and available info. From a cursory search,
http://x264dev.multimedia.cx/archives/249 (low-latency streaming)
http://x264dev.multimedia.cx/archives/286 (adaptive streaming)
Thanks for the links. For the time being I've oped to encode h264/mp4. I was really hoping for webm, but it looks as though I don't have much of an option. Forcing my self to stay confined to a plain html5 video tag has proved limiting, low over head, but limiting.
Media is encoding now, it'll be a day or three or four before its all done, but so far as proved worth while. Though I have found I may need a bit more horse power to service multiple streams on the iis server

Xoom - new user experience

I have had this Xoom tablet since Monday and every evening after work I've been busy toying with it to see what it can do. Wasn't sure initially that I was going to get it since a new version is about to hit the markets, but I got a good deal at Dixons in Dublin airport (€289) for the WiFi version.
Anyway, in most of the things it's a great toy but it has a few, but really annoying, shortcomings:
- Not able to charge via USB cable
- Not able to mount like a normal Android device to my computers
- Playing movies is a a horrible experience, if at all possible.
For the second item, I have downloaded and installed the Motorola drivers for my Windows PC and after that it mounts just fine. Same goes for my Mac. For Linux I had to fire up the Terminal and do some fiddling following various guides on how to set up USB mounting and Samba sharing. So it's not impossible, just annoying that manual setup needs to be done on various platforms...or perhaps I'm just lazy.
I have quite a few .mkv movie files and I have searched this forum for players that will accept the files. None of the players I've downloaded are able to play mkv even with Codecs installed. All of the players mentioned in this thread do not work with a mkv file the size of 1.5GB. There appears to be software that can convert the files to be more Xoom friendly, but it costs about $30. Of course, seeing my mate being able to play all movie files on his HP TouchPad with WebOS without problems doesn't exactly help to lift my spirits.
I did have some issues with Google Music not wanting to remember my online collection but since downloading the latest app yesterday this now appears to be fixed.
My Xoom runs Tiamat Xoom Rom 2.2.2 - Moray and I flashed the Odachi kernel.
Other than my ranting above the Xoom is great for browsing the web, skype, listening to music and reading books (becoming addicted to buying books in Kindle)
For the MKV files - handbrake won't convert em for you? Cause that's free - and what I use to convert raw material for my xoom.
edit: and I personally have never seen a tablet that charges via USB. Samsung's galaxy tabs charge via their dock, my old nook color required the charger to charge, even though it was a modified USB cable, and the xoom is well.. we know already.

Haven't used Handbrake in a while so I'll have a try to see if it works. Any special settings you set up in Handbrake for it to work with the Xoom?
This is my first tablet so I don't actually have much to compare with regarding the USB charging. I just mentioned the lack of USB charging to two colleagues who have HP tablets and they were surprised that it needs an actual wall charger.
As its been said many times before USB charging would take forever on a tablet. I can charge my xoom to 100% way faster then my girlfriends Galaxy 10 which uses the 5v USB.
And the way the file managing is done is better and worse in a way. Phones and pcs handle it better and i haven't had a issue with corrupting my sd card like i did with my Droid 2 and the old mounting. But linux is a pain to get MTP to work with. On my Win 7 pcs it saw it right away and worked with out needing anything DLed.
And handbrake does all my video converting great. It may not be super 1080P HD but i really dont need super HD on a tablet. Ill try to pull my preset file for you to try.
I use MX Player off of the market for MKV files and it plays them flawlessly when changing to software decoding and such for certain files. You should look into that.

Cool thanks! Was looking for VLC earlier. Will give these a try.
Edit: first one (VLC-nonneon) works albeit the picture is not very steady. Loads of small breaks when playing a film. Second one force closes.

Just out of curiosity, how large are these files you're testing with? .mkv's, .avi's?
The VLC app works for me if I don't try to jump all around the videos too often. It's pre-alpha so there should be some quirks.

The files were about 1.5 GB. I've tried with smaller files and that seems to work. I just assumed that any file under 4 GB would play without problems. In any case I've fired up Handbrake to compress the movie files. Great with free software
My way of doing things.
so far i havent had any problems playing videos, partially because things have been too hectic for the 4g xooms so i keep changing stuff, and partially because most of the movies i own in digital form all play without hesitation, like from the google movies.
as far as mounting goes, windows does fine once u have the drivers, but i hate paying for software, so fudge windows. linux on the other hand is easy, all i do is boot into cwm and mount usb drive. works like a snap, prob work in windows too, just havent tried. that lets u access your externalsd, but theres prob a way to mount ur internal, just havent tried that yet either.
and the charging i read somewhere actually works through usb, its just so slow, and so low that one, it doesnt register, and two it would only really be fesible in an emergency. but i actually like the fact we get a full powered charger that just juices it up quick and painlessly. true the only way to charge it on the go is get a seperate charger, or a converter, but i can live with the battery power.
hope u figure your stuff out, i love this thing. does all i want and more, witht the added benefit of having a metal case, which is more important than u think!! wait till your mates drop their pads, i put mine through some rough wear, and that metal case has saved it several times. the biggest thing that breaks on these that ive seen is the glass on the screen, which is a pretty easy fix, plus it wont make it unusable if u do, just gotta live with it. have fun!!!
I use MX Player to play video files that were nearly 1.1GBs, never had a problem. Is the Video the problem or the audio when you were using it?

It's the video that lags.
no lag now after the films were compressed with handbrake. Happy days
I play 10GB MKVs with MX Video player, I have no idea why you would be having issues with your files. I love my Xoom and MX plays everything
charged it to 100 % last night and it was at 99% thus morning. Just one per cent down in 10 hours with screen off. That's very impressive!

From my personal experiences:
- Not able to charge via USB cable
Aye, that's a shame but understandable due to the amount of power needed.
- Not able to mount like a normal Android device to my computers
Unfortunately this will be the way for all android devices, also all phones. This is due to the switch to MTP connectivity from ICS and up. Google made this switch so they were able to pool all the memory in a device to a single storage pool, this to avoid all the issues with earlier (low amount of memory) devices which would run out of space after installing a lot of applications like for example the HTC Desire or original Nexus.
- Playing movies is a a horrible experience, if at all possible.
Agreed, it was quite a let down, mostly due to the limitations of the Tegra cpu. As mentioned by a lot of others MX player does it pretty well however, for my own collection i use and can advise you Plex. Its removes the need to recode anything in you library. On the move its not an option if you are without wifi in your case (i have a 3g Xoom myself) but its awesome when connected.
Enjoy your device.

Movies/tv shows

A question for all. Is there any way to get movies/tv shows for the tab? Refering to either an app (buy the content) or legal website to purchace. Now im not talking about hulu or any subscription based program. The original tab had Media Hub and tha was great. Another option would be how to rip blue ray or dvd then transfer to tab but i know ripping software are expensive and i would need to buy external blue ray for my laptop to go that route not very economical. Sugestions would be welcomed as i really wast to take advantage of the screen. And what restrictions would i have to install the content on the externat sd card and what could i do in order for it the play. Thanks and hope i was clear on what i am looking for

decided to give itunes a try, i rented a movie and transfered to external sd and nothing, could not play using stock movie player. i downloaded 4 different movie players to try and play it and nothing, even though they all stated they could play the format. now the movie i rented was star trek and it was named as star trek.m4v and file format is video/mp4 as per the stock player. the demo movie that came with the tab is formated as video/mp4 as well only difference is that the name extension is .mp4. any suggestions as to why no movie player can access the movie? or is it because it came from itune?

there is always free programs to rip and convert stuff you could do something like this for dvds.
edit: here is a more old school guide for the process just in case.
I pose a moral question. If you already own the material why not just save yourself a lot of time and hassle and download it? The end product is the same as if you rip the dvd and remove the protection then convert it to a more managable .mp4 or .mkv yourself.

Huh? I thought the big benefit of iTunes is to be DRM free, but maybe this is only with music…
btw: Try MX Player! It can play nearly everything for free and you can use hardware decoding.

Also, I am not your lawyer, but it's not strictly illegal to download things. Uploading is what gets people into trouble. That may change in the future, though.
I am using Amazon to rent/download videos for my Note, assume this should work for the 7.7 also.

So I was able to get a movie from amazon and download it to my laptop. The file was saved as a .wmv file, I tried to transfer it to the tab and it would not allow me to due to license restrictions ( I dont get it I already payed for it what else do I need ) it also mentioned to convert the file as an option. I tried using handbrake to convert it from .wmv to .mkv, it got to 2% convertion and then got an error message and handbrake stopped, tried it twice and same issue. So I have come to the conclusion that I should just give up because it is getting to complicated to get a simple movie to the tab.

I can't tell you what the best settings are but if the quality is not high enough you can change it to make it higher. If you are using the constant quality slider you can slide it up to 18 or 17 or even 16. If you are using a target file size and you are converting from a dvd you can use lets say 2048 MB and see if that is better. I would stay with an mp4. You can try each codec to see if you prefer one over the other. h.264 is supposed to be better but i guess the other one is a quicker encode i am not sure though.
Not sure if this is much help...but an app called 'remux' (for Mac OSX) copies video files into a new 'container (say mkv to mp4), but does not re-encode the video stream itself. So, would remux-ing the .m4v video file would remove the DRM, or is it embedded into the actual video stream? I've yet to try this myself having never used the iTunes store for getting video files.
Hmm, answered my own question--Googled 'remux m4v to mkv DRM' and found an ehow.com webpage that could that be helpful (Wow...that makes me look incredibly noob-ish, lol) So, hopefully this post is somewhat useful/relevant, and I'm using the correct forum etiquette (OK to reference other websites considering the DRM issue?). Regardless, enjoy those Samsung 7.7's. That AMOLED screen must rock for HD vids, etc.

[Q] Loading movies to Nexus 7

I have about 50 movies on my PC computer. Most were ripped from my DVD collection and are in .mkv format.
Will I be able to load them on my Nexus 7? Don't say upload them to a cloud and download them from there. This would take forever, the up speed of my (and most) ISP is slow. So how can I do this, can movies be transferred through the USB cable? OR, am I screwed?

I'm pretty sure you can still use MTP to transfer data to and from a PC.
Edit: The official guidebook also confirms that you can do this.
https://play.google.com/books/reade...er&output=reader&authuser=0&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA69
Out of the box, the Nexus 7 can't read external storage and transfer files from USB hard drives and flash drives etc. Although you can root your Nexus 7 and install StickMount, which fixes that.

If you don't want to physically move to your PC location, ES Explorer can easily find shares. Just cut and paste over wifi. Or if you prefer to push from your PC, then try Air Droid.
USB does not work properly with the KF ICS kernel (slow), so I got on the habit of just using wifi.
ES can also stream movies...if they are encoded on the right way.

When you conenct your device to you pC it will give you the option to file transfer. Just drag and drop the movies onto your device.
But 50 movies? That wont all fit
Most movies are 250-600 MB from my experience, and theres 1000 Mb in a GB. Its a 16 GB device but the OS takes up .66 so your left with 15.33. Your only gonna get like maybe 10-20 at the most if all you have is Movies on the USB STorage
It'll be a huge pain in the butt (cause the process is quite slow) but you can always transcode your videos down to a smaller size.
Make em 1 - 2gb each should be space to fit 5 to 10 movies for a 9 hr trip.
You can use following programs to do so:
Handbrake
SUPER
meGUI
Mediacoder

1-2 GB?!?! Movies are not over 1GB they are like 500 MB
what does everyone use to shrink them down to below a gig?
Its all about how the movie is encoded and what type. I have well over 1500 movies done. Blue ray done so maintain HD ends with 23.5 gig avg. Reg DVD around 900 meg. I can get them smaller in size but then would look like crap.

are you sure your not stuck in the days of real player? any decently encoded movie ranges from 750mb - 2gb. It's time for you to come back to the future

Most of the DVD ripped movies are 750mb - 1.4gb but the BD rips are 3gb - 5gb. When working with my iPad, there are programs that resize and transcode them to the best size/format for the iPad. I assume that such programs will be available for the N7 in a short time.
As this is a wifi device I just steam my movies from a NAS (or PC) I guess if you wanted to wtch them on a trip you could copy some to the device, but if your at home just stream.

Those 4 programs I mentioned above can do what you want, you can basically make any size, you just adjust the settings to shink down your movies.
Of course (and obviously) the lower the size, the lesser the quality. There's soooooo many settings in videos to reduce size. You change the audio from 5.1 down to stereo mp3, you can change the frame rate, you can change the bandwidth, you can change the color depth, you can change the encoding types and dozens more settings.
There is no "best" settings, everyone likes something different. Some people don't mind 480p videos, while others are fine with reducing the color depth or the bandwidth to still get 720p res.
With those programs you can customize your settings to make whatever suites you best.
Here, here's a guide from another user on how to transcode movies using Handbrake for an Acer A500 (which is a Tegra 2 device) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184002
Of course that guide is designed for a Tegra 2 but there's not tremendous difference between transcoding stuff for a Nexus 7. The Nexus has a high resolution equivalent to most 10 inch devices (such as the A500), so whatever is suitable on them will be plenty suitable on a Nexus 7 as well.
As for the guy with the 500mb movies... well... I guess some people just don't give a crap about quality at all. I for one am a bit more picky and therefore my movies are higher in size. As another user mentioned, most of mine are Blu-Ray rips. And the Nexus 7 has an HD screen. DVD's are lower resolution than what the Nexus screen can output so if you're only using DVD rips, you are losing quality, even on a small 7 inch screen, it's still a 720p HD screen. Some people don't care, I do. To each their own.
But the 4 programs mentioned above will do what you want. You just have to learn how to use them.
All are very good points. Each has his or her own preference.
Personally I like to keep the hi def stuff on the equipment and tech that can truly deliver that experience, like my home theater.
However when travelling I expect some loss of quality and have been fine with 720p or generally transcoding a specific set of movies down to 800mb-1.4gb depending on length and type of movie.
For the nex7 i would only see myself watching movies on it while underway, in flight, or long commutes. I also wouldn't expect to watch more than the battery life in movies in a single day, with that said i wouldn't need more than eight movies for a nine hour flight back to the mainland.
Like many have said, its all preference and what you need to get you through the day or week.

Acer Tablet for Toddler Amusement... Need help!

Ok... I have an Acer Iconia A500 and want to mount it to my head rest so that I can play Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and all that for my toddler as she is in the back seat while we're driving... problem is, I can't get the videos (DVD) over there... So I can buy a converter, worth it, so I'm going to do that but what I want to know is if there is a way that I can just get a small portable DVD player and have the video from the DVD player output onto the tablet? I woudl assume that this can be done via the HDMI cable but I'm not positive... I can power both devices via the car charger, and run the 3.5mm to the radio aux for sound, just want a way to make this happen... Thanks in advance.:cyclops:

No video IN port on your A500 - that HDMI port is only for video out. You cannot plug a external device into the tablet and use the tab as a monitor. Just does not work that way.
Assuming you have access to a desktop system with a DVDrom drive - all you really need to do is convert the DVD into a standard .mp4 / .avi container and place that file on the Acer (Recommend not placing these files in internal storage, they can get rather huge. Use a microSD card or a USB storage stick). Plug the 3.5mm to the AUX just like you had it, fire up a good video player (I love MX Player, free on the Play Store) and you should be good to go.
Converting a DVD to a standard video file is pretty easy. Here are some links to get you started.
(Assuming you have access to a Windows PC for the following - let me know if you do not and I can help)
Decrypt the DVD first - http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/
Convert the decrypted files - http://handbrake.fr/
Done. Assuming you have no experience with converting DVD to AVI/MP4 - there is going to be a bit of a learning curve and there are literally thousands of free and paid apps out there that can do this for you. I personally advise against the paid apps (they may be more simple and provide more of a "one-click" method, but you are not going to learn much and are going to have far less control over the quality/filesize of the output file).
There is a awesome sticky about using Handbrake posted here by WerecatF - should help with any questions you may have using Handbrake.
Handbrake guide by XDA User 'WereCatF' - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1184002
DVDFab can probably help you with this as well. It is paid software, but it is rather simple to use and from my experience - works very well. It also has a free trial (at least a few weeks) so you can give it a try. Probably a lot easier of a starting point for a novice then the DVDDecrypter / Handbrake method.
DVDfab: http://www.dvdfab.com/
Again, this is going to have a bit of a learning curve if you have not converted video before. Please let me know if I can be of any further help. Hope this at least gets you pointed in the right direction.
Hi there...whilst I may be a noob where Android phones are concerned, ripping DVD to mp4 IS something I know about.....I do it on a regular basis to allow me to watch my favourite films on my phone. The software I use is Leawo DVD to mp4 converter. (Link provided below)
http://www.leawo.com/dvd-to-mp4-converter/
It's a free release of a paid software package, but that doesn't mean to say that it's lacking in features. It will successfully deal with *most* encryption types, and has a whole collection of output profiles that are designed to cater for most of the popular phones, consoles, mp4 players, pads and generic video types. As I mentioned, it may be the free version, but because it is so customizable, it may take a bit of getting used to.....I can give advice if needed...just pm me....

Keith's link is probably a lot better - I would avoid paying for any DVD->mp4/avi converter software package, as most of them are just using the same open source FFMPEG stuff anyway. Not worth paying for what is already free and open source.
Like Keith said - the issue with the free software is going to be a bit of a learning curve if you have not done this before. Looks like you got a couple people standing by to get you pointed in the right direction, however
If you're running Linux, an installed libdvdcss will automatically be used by handbrake... For ubuntu, that's as simple as running
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:stebbins/handbrake-releases
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install handbrake-gtk
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
from a terminal... This will install handbrake will and make it take care of any encryption that might get in the way. If you have handbrake installed, you only need the last line.
WIll these methods work with "protected" dvd's? Im fine with the long way... I develop for Android and other platforms, so picking this up won't be a problem

Yup. That's what DVDDecryptor is for (rather outdated software, probably won't work on some movies, but many other programs will take care of the decrypt for you). Just decrypt, convert from the .VOB files into something tablet friendly (I usually just go for generic .mp4 - seems to work best for me), copy the file to the tab, good to go.
Assuming you are going to be doing this for DVD video and not BLU-RAY. I have like zero experience in ripping a BLU-RAY
I seem to remember reading an article that said Avatar had been given the latest and greatest copy protection available. The Leawo software dealt with it like it wasn't even encrypted......

Yay! Best of luck to you!
^+1.....I still recommend the Leawo though......it can be used for ANY Android device (or the iCompetition) and you don't have to be particularly tech savvy to use it unless you want to tweak the settings to suit your specific phone (which you don't have to if you don't want to) and as it's free, you haven't wasted any money if you don't like it........

Soon.. she's saying words like "Purple, Puppy" and knows all the dogs names and such... so shes real close to completing sentences and stuff and thinking logically. I wonder if I should run the aux to the car radio and play the movie thru the car for her or get her an external pair of USB powered speakers so we dont have to really hear the movie... guess it doesn't matter either way.
Lol......are you anywhere near the point where you start humming a tune that you can't get out of your head and you suddenly realise that it's the theme tune to one of the programs your kiddie watches? Thanks to my kids, it's spongebob square pants.......lol
Btw.....which method did you use?......

For me its the stupid Hot Dog song from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse... lol.
I ended up going with the DVD Decryptor and Handbrake. I like the non-one click way of doing stuff... keeps me on my toes :victory:

Okay. Here's another question. I have it playing Nemo now... When kid #2 comes around, canni use the hdmi out on the tablet to play the movie on both my tablet and an external screen?

I believe one of the other posters mentioned that the socket in question was an output.....so providing you have the right leads and a screen that accepts an HDMI input, I see no reason for the setup not to work. The most important thing to verify is the HDMI input, as scart, s-vhs, co-axial, RGB are not in any way interchangeable with HDMI.......
