T-Mobile: Tethering to Nexus 10 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have the t-mobile unlimited everything and it says that I have 500mb of tethering. I'm not trying to go stealth or anything.
I have used the default tethering app on android and it sets up fine. My nexus 10 even connects to it but the indicator bars stay gray, which means that there is no data (or at least i'm not able to do anything online with my n10).
Has anyone had a problem like this before and know a solution? Does tethering require a good connection? I average 1 or 2 bars.
N4 is AOKP and i've tried thru LTE and their regular HSPA.
thanks

have you tried other apps to make sure that your phone is tethering properly, have you tried it with or without a security password. Have you rebooted both devices and tried fresh? Also have tried connecting to a pc or another phone
Please let us know what steps you have taken already

I have rebooted both devices.
I tried foxfi for the heck of it and that only seems to work on verizon. Barnacle says that it cant find WAN interface?
I have tried it with no security code, with WPA, with WPA2.
I have not tried connecting to a PC or a phone. will try that later and report back.
Does only a certain APN work for tethering?

I use LiquidSmooth and I have not had an issue. I also used CM without a hitch in that dept. Next suggestion is try a different rom

Are you using a custom Kernel? Only ask because I had and issue with tethering on my Galaxy Nexus when I had one and the Kernel I was using was then issue.

You're a genius! that was it.
Sadly I was a big fan of franco kernel (M3). Has anyone else been able to get it working or can recommend a similar kernel for me to check out? I mostly used the battery saving mode, custom color profiles, and voltage changes.
thanks in advance!

Thats wierd... Mine with franco r162 tethers fine. Try the franco nightlies instead of the milestone.

Okay, so I fixed the issue. It required flashing the stock kernel 40 and then flashing m3 franco again. very weird but it works now.

Which version of the app are you using? I find that strange things tend to happen, but eventually it does work after rebooting (sometime more than once).

I just recently was having the same problem. It would connect to my laptop fine...but no internet. Try clearing data for it first. For me, I had to wipe all data and programs...and reflash the rom (bonsai). It works fine, now. I am using the pre14 version.
Also dont have 4g turned on at first.

Wired tether on NS4G

Hey Folks,
Ever since the NS4G received the OTA causing tethering to not work unless you paid i've been interested in finding the easiest tethering solution (rooted) possible.
I came across android-wired-tether but assumed it wouldn't work because it hasn't been updated in two years.
Well I finally got around to trying it, and I think it's my favorite now. It starts tethering similar to how USB tethering in the android menus using RNDIS and tweaking some settings in the kernel via twiddling stuff in /proc.
So it works with 3G and 4G both. I prefer it to wireless tether since you actually get to keep the phone "charging" while you're tethering rather than burning through battery like mad running a 3G or 4G radio as well as the wireless radio.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
There's nothing wrong with wirelessly tethering AND charging your Nexus via a USB cable at the same time. Besides I prefer to just run a ROM with native tethering built in.

Well two comments on that hack:
1) The thing i'm not keen on for that hack is that you don't really know what other improvements you're missing from the proprietary RIL by flashing the old one.
2) You can't tether with 4G when using the hack.

The device gets noticeably warmer and the battery drains quicker than it can charge via the USB.

Err, no, mine doesn't. When I need to tether, it's because my myriad of wifi devices need internet, not just my laptop.

N4 on AT&T: wi-fi tether works great except for iPad. Any suggestions?

Using an un-rooted N4 on AT&T using the stock wi-fi tether setup. I get great speeds on my laptop and desktop (6-9 mbps) over wi-fi tether, but my iPad 3 and iPad mini can connect to the network but have just a trickle of data flow at best and usually no data at all. For good measure, my wife's iPhone 5 has the same behavior, just to throw a third Apple device into the mix.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I can try to make this work?
Thanks in advance.

I am running paranoid android and wireless tethering is working fine with my iPad. I had trouble before with a different phone and I downloaded the wireless tether app from Google, messed with the settings in the app and got it to work. I can't remember the settings though. I would try that app and in the app's settings there is a menu to choose your device, try generic jellybean and see if that works.
Edit:
This is where I always went for the tethering app... http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
Wait a minute, your not rooted. It might be time to root buddy.

I just got the N4 yesterday and have not yet tried rooting. I will definitely give it a try when I get to that point.

Its really easy and worth it. You can always return to stock if you want.

I did manage to find a solution that works without rooting and wanted to share it.
Although certainly not optimal, leaving the hotspot as OPEN with no encryption will allow the iPad to connect via WiFi tether. I still plan to look into whether rooting is beneficial for me personally, but I was happy to find this method as a viable option.

Sounds like you need to check what security settings you had on the N4, when stock I had no issues acting as a hotspot for my ipad or macbook, I had it set as wpa2 psk.

Thanks for the suggestion. Wpa2 psk, which I had been trying, still did not work for whatever reason. But I realized that I had hadn't tried wpa psk and that worked perfectly so now I have some security!

I wonder why wpa2 isn't working for you, glad something is working for you and in a hotspot situation I don't think anybody is going to bother trying to hack your connection.

I don't understand either. This is an iPad 3, iPad mini, and iPhone that all don't work with wpa2, yet so many others have no problem at all.

Please Help. WiFi Download speed is TOO LOW

Hey guys...I have posted in many threads but was not getting an answer...So I created this thread...Im having a serious WIFi crisis...My downloading speed is very very low..I have a 1MB line...but my max download speed is like 3-4 KBs...I have tried many things...There was a thread with wifi issue and a possible fix...Tried that with no success...I have unchecked the wifi optimization in settings too...Also tried installing franco's kernel, that didnt help either...
So is there a solutiin or do I have to live like this...as i cant return to google as a rma ...
P.S My other android phones had no problem on this router...
Thanks..

Does this only happen on your router or all wifi signals.
Only thing I can think of is updating the router software and see if this changes things at all.

That's really weird because I used that same method to fixing my WiFi problem and it works. Double check to see if you changed the right one.. =\ all I can say man
Google Nexus 4
Turn off BMPS (Set it to 0) in the wifi ini. This should theoretically remove all slowdowns but will prevent your phone from sleeping (with wifi on). Another solution is to download Franco Kernel with Prima Drivers and force wireless G mode in the ini.

WiFi tether without root?

My buddy has a GS4 on Sprint and he has been unable to get the WiFi tether to work without paying extra for it. He doesn't want to unlock/root it. Is there a workaround without root?

Have you checked out FoxFi/PdaNet? Depending on the software level the phone is on, one or the other should work.
http://foxfi.com/
Foxfi doesn't work, pdanet won't help as we need WiFi tether for the Chromecast.
Thanks though

I'm also curious about this. It seems that the KitKat update has broken most of the apps that were previously recommended, including FoxFi. Any ideas?

Which version? I tried using 2.16.2. When I try to start the hotspot, I see this:
Hotspot Error
You are not subscribed to the Hotspot service. Do you want to see subscription options?
Cancel OK
No matter which option I pick, it never works. Thoughts?

Oh. I think of a physical connection when someone says "tether". My apologies sir.
Now I'm thinking WiFi Hotspot. I obviously don't know what I'm talking about, so I'll bow out.
