Need some advice on Plans - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My father passed away a month ago.I found out since he is the primary on the account for At&t I could cancel the account without any ETF fees. I would like to get something simple and cheap for my mom and sister now. Ideally I would like the following:
1. Two Smart Phones with at least 2GB of Data a month unlimited text and either unlimited minutes or at least mobile to mobile on any network. ( I don't use minutes really but my sister she can burn them)
2. One Flip phone for my mom with no data text etc, just minutes to call.
3. I would like fast HSPA+ speed or LTE just as long as its not regular 3G and below.
I would like to spend say no more then $150 a month. Is their any plan or carrier out their that has something like this in the Bay Area?

T mobile or simple mobile

Is simple mobile on T mobiles network?

T-mobile would be $110 a month plus any equipment installment payments (depending in Handsets used). Thus would also give your mom texting and 500 MB of data in case she decides to try it (my mom likes having email and other info on the go that she didn't have with a flip phone).

Wait. How do you get $110? If I goto T mobile site and add 2 S4 and a flip phone I got like $160 a month with the 2GB plan.

Try T-Mobile Simple Choice. $50 for the first phone, $30 for the second and $10 for each phone after that. Unlimited Voice, Text and Data. The first 500MB for each line is high-speed. After that it is 3G. Bring your own phones.

+1 T-Mobile Simple Choice
Add 2 GB data at $10 per line for both smart phones, and the total monthly charge is $110 plus taxes and fees.

If I add 2 phones on the simple plan I get $120. Where are you guys getting $110?

Are you taking the amount for the phones each month into account?

T mobile is 50 for the first line than 30 for each additional. You get 500mb of data free for 2gb its extra 10 and unlimited 20 (I have used 20+gb no slowing me down) if you get a phone through t mo its a down payment plus taxes and an additional 10-20 depending on the phone. T mobile imho is very reasonable if you get good service

10 dollar 4g?

Just saw a commercial for 10 dollar 4g plan. Anyone know what that plan is? Is it a lower data cap or is it just a "free" sample kind of deal?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Its going to replace the current 15 dollar plan its 200 mb if you go over it .10 per mb with a 30 dollar overage cap. So if you used a ton you would end up paying 40 in total. So I would start with the unlimated for one month see how much you use. If under 200 mb just do the 10 I don't think its out yet though.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
its out but with 3000 min plan
On t-mobile, new customers receive the 10 dollar 200mb option. Existing customers must switch to the promo version if the even more plans (even if they are on an even more plan currently). This promo plan is the only version available to new customers.
For existing customers I call the 200mb feature the 15 dollar web because that is how much it costs if you don't change to the newer plans.
Switching to the 10 dollar web plans does extend the contract on ALL lines on your account but doesn't affect your upgrade dates.
The best plan in my opinion is the 4g do more 3000 min promo plan for 149.99. 3k minutes, unlimited text for the family, and unlimited 4g web for 2 phones. Additional lines are only 5 bucks to share minutes. I've been off since sunday but I'm pretty sure this 3k plan is still available. On this 3k promo plan unlimited 4g web is only 20 dollars per line including additional lines.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Also.. This 3k plan does require at least 2 phones to have unlimited data.
Also keep on mind.. This isn't very obvious to even sales reps.. But smartphones like the g2 and the mytouch 4g are considered premium smartphones so they do require the unlimited web in order to receive their rebates. The tag says data plan required but t-mobile's internal says that the unlimited feature is required for rebates. This can be very confusing because you are given the option of the 200mb feature on all phones.

I called today and switched two of our five lines to the $10/mo 200mb data plan- my G2 and my boyfriend's Vibrant. We don't live in or near a 4G area (or 3G or Edge for that matter) and since we're mostly on wifi, and don't use much cell data, it made sense and saves us $40/mo. If we do go over, its capped $-wise at what we were paying, so no big deal.
Our contract was not extended, and the rep was very helpful.

You must have already been on the promo version of the even more plan.. How long ago did you start the current plan that you are on? The 10 dollar feature is not offered I the system to previous plans.

The $5 add a line ended on Tuesday....its back to $10 add a line now. The 4G 3k plan is still up and running though.
Feel free to do whatever you want. My advice is stick with the unlimited data plan. The first time you go over your gonna be really really sorry.

we have 5 lines, 750 min even more plan, $15 unlim family texting, unlim data on one line, 200mb on three lines (now) and no data on the last line, family allowances and insurance on three lines.
I plead the case that we don't get 4G or even 3G where we live and use wifi most of the time, which the rep could see from past billing cycles, and it was rather unfair for us to have to pay for something that TMo cannot provide, and that we do not/can not use.
she made the change retro to the beginning of this current billing cycle and was very nice about it.
like I explained before, we have been paying for unlim data on the two lines that were changed, so saving money is a bonus. if we go over, it won't be by much, so no matter what, the bill will always be less than it used to be.
These new plans are to get you off the unl everything and will end up costing you more in the end. Keep up with the two giants and you will see what tmo is doing. Its all compitition. Plans like these are the reason why at&t sit where they are. Number 1 wireless carrier. Vzw has been on at&t's ass for awhile now and with the iphone coming in? Customer base may increase significantly. Give tmo some cool phone and better data and they too can have a good customer base.

Did you sign a two yr contract? If so, you still have one more year left. You may be able to get a partial discount (partial subsidized price) on the SGS-2, but that means you are renewing an additional two years on top of the remaining one year. That is 3 yrs.
I sure as hell wouldn't commit to T-Mobile for 3 yrs just to get that phone.
You can buy it at full retail and wouldn't have to sign a contract, but that would cost you obviously more for the phone.
Why don't you check out ebay for the Sensation 4G, you can pick one up for 300 or so without contract. Or wait a few months and SGS-2 will be on ebay for cheap.
Just don't sign another contract, 3 yrs more with T-Mobile is insane, especially since nobody knows what is going to happen to them.
Another option is to cancel your T-Mobile account. Pay the 200 ETF. Then go to At&t and get the SGS-2 for 149.99 (if you shop around).
This comes out to 349.99.
Also, contrary to popular belief, At&t is actually cheaper than T-mobile. If you compare the current contract plans on At&t to the current contract plans on T-Mobile, you get more for your money on At&t (especially if you are on a Family plan). However, if you are on a grandfathered T-Mobile plan then that might not be the case.
Anyways, deffinately don't sign another T-mobile contract, that is crazy right now.
Edit:
According to Archie53 they don't add an additional 2 yrs on your remaining 1 yr, they just renew from that point on for 2 more yrs.
Thanks for the clarification.
They don't add time onto existing contracts, they just restart the two years. The partial discount is pretty much not worth signing a two year contract , your almost better off just paying full price.

What claims?
The part where I said current At&t contract plans (especially family plans) are cheaper than current contract T-Mobile plans?
Just go to At&t and T-mobile compare the plans side by side. At&t comes out cheaper. At&t gives you unlimited calling to Any mobile on any carrier as long as you get family text messaging. I'm on a grandfathered plan with T-mobile, and if I switch to At&t I would save about 30 bucks a month and get unlimited mobile to mobile on any carrier. The only thing I would lose is my 5gb data cap, compared to 2Gb on At&t. That's ok though, I don't even use the full 2GB, I'm always on wifi wherever I go.

First off, you don't need to be rude. I'm pretty sure I'm more educated than you are.
Secondly, why would I get unlimited talk on At&t when At&t offers rollover and free mobile to mobile on any carrier with the purchase of famly text messaging for 30 bucks or individual for 20 bucks.
With At&t rollover and unlimited mobile to mobile TO ANY CARRIER, you can get one of the cheaper At&t minute plans and save a lot of money, yet still basically have unlimited talk. THAT WAS MY POINT.

Yeah you're right bout the rude part. Sorry.
Everyone's family is different and needs for phones are different...your way is fine as long as your family won't call landlines. Mine tends to talk to a variety of connections(mobile and landline/google voice*) So an unlimited makes way more sense for me and mine. With the unlimited Tmobile beats At&t hands down.

Apology accepted.
Ya, both carriers have their pros and cons, and you're right sometimes one is cheaper than the other depending on one's needs.
I knew I forgot something...i put the * on google voice up there because if you're calling to and from GV alot it is considered landlines. Another reason I need the actual unlimited as everyone now has my GV number. Unless you're calling a sprint GV number, then it's a mobile...i think.

Whether he re-ups his T-Mobile contract, or gets a new contract with ATT, he'll be in the same boat. Except he'll probably be paying less on T-Mobile.
If the merger goes through, ATT has to honor all existing customer contracts. If they raise your rates, you get out ETF-free.
Plus since the source just.dropped for the sgs2 it will be rooted soon so that's even better

Does the DVP work on Prepaid?

So I just purchased and am awaiting a DVP BNIB for $200 which I think is a decent deal. The more I read, the more worried I become. I am familar with WP7 I have owned an HD7 and currently have an Arrive, but my concern is that I read in a few places that the DVP doesn't support T-Mo prepaid. Can anyone please confirm or deny this??? Thank you so much.
Denied...
I'm using mine on Simple Mobile which uses t-mo's network and it runs fine. The only unsupported items are call forwarding and visual voicemail which wouldn't be supported on t-mo prepaid anyway.
Just assume from now on that all phones that support the network you are trying to use the prepaid service on, support the said prepaid service. so any TMO phone that is certified as one, will support TMO's prepaid service.
Thank you both.
Yes! Using DVP on T-mobile's $30 walmart plan, 100 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited web (5GB at 4G speed).
Just activated my DVP on Simple Mobile today. Everything looks fine so far. One nice little bonus I didn't expect is that there are no taxes or fees on the $40 Unlimited plan.

Can you run a speed test? I was contemplating switching to that plan but it is a well known fact that Simple Mobile throttles the speed on that plan to 119 kbps. You can force the phone to edge to get a little faster speed. I stuck with the $60 plan because of that. My wife has the AT&T HTC Fuze. Since it can only use edge on T-mo's network, I got her the $40 plan.
Also, you can go to online stores like callingmart that have discount promos every month and reduce it even further. I have 2 lines ($60 plan and $40 plan) and with 5% off, I pay only $95 every month!

That is an excellent deal considering I live in New York City. NYC has the the third highest cell phone taxes in the country at almost 25%. If you were to get any postpaid plans, I would have to add 25% on top of it. So, 2 lines at $49.99 would cost me approximately $125 a month. At $30/month, I'm saving $720 just in taxes over a two year contract period!!

I switched from the $40 Simple Mobile plan since the 3G is quite slow for streaming music escpecially now that Mango offers streaming in the background. Viewing pictures on facebook also takes a while. They also don't support subscription to machine-generated text messages. With the $30 T-Mo plan, you get 4G speeds for up to 5GB. Sweet!
After a week on the Simple Mobile $40 3G plan, I have to say it's not such a great deal. The Voice and texting are fine but the data is pretty bad. It is capped at Edge speeds and I have problems connecting even when I show 5 full bars and the 3G icon. Fortunately, I average less than 100 minutes of calls per month, so the $30 "Walmart" plan on T-Mo pre-paid should be perfect for me. I will be signing up for that after my 30 days with Simple expire in December.

I am definitely planning on trying that T-Mo plan as soon as my 30 days are up with Simple. Fortunately, I never come close to using 100 talk minutes a month, so it really sounds like the perfect plan for me. The only thing that has me a bit confused are the billing/payment options. I would prefer to keep a credit card on file with them and have them take the $30 out automatically every month. From what I read about the plan on the howard forums, most people seem to use those pre-paid cards to re-up every month. That sounds like it would be a bit of a hassle to do it that way.

Planning to leave Verizon (and Incredible)...

After 7+ years as a loyal Verizon customer, and 2+ years as a fanatical Incredible user, I'm leaning strongly towards leaving it all behind. The straw was the recent change to mandatory Shared Data plans. I just can't justify spending $30+ more per month when I upgrade for essentially the same service I am getting now. I understand why Verizon needed to make a change...but it's just too much for me.
I've been eyeing the GNex for a while, and with the continued disappointing turnout of HTC on Verizon (Inc 4G...really? Small screen, no ImageSense), I am planning to get the $350 unlocked, GNex direct from Google and then sign up with a month-to-month plan with a GSM provider.
Sad to see it all go, but also excited with the new possibilities.
If anyone else is mulling this conundrum, I found this thread to be very helpful...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1455014
I'm not happy with that either but to my understanding the shared data is an option not a requirement. I believe the tiered plan will still be an option.

Im up for my upgrade so i went on the vzw site logged in, went to upgrade device, picked a phone and went to the plan portion and there is only the one, 40 per phone 50 for 1gb shared data. No option to keep my current plan unless i buy the phone for retail with no contract. I am just going to save up my cash and when the inc dies, buy a phone retail or off amazon or ebay or something. That way i keep my 60 dollar a month bill with the unlimited data plan forever. I dont do a lot of talking or texting so the whole unlimited deal dosent really seem like a deal to me. And 50 for 1gb, thats just outrageous.
I know losing unlimited sucks, but I voluntarily gave it up. The shared plan gives me unlimited talk time, and 4gb a month between my girlfriend and I. We only averaged around 1.5-1.75gb per month each anyways and now that I figured out my employers network password I'm on their wifi at work lol. Saving $40 a month and gaining unlimited talk time was well worth it for me.
That said, I'm still considering leaving Verizon. Their service has been exceptionally poor in my area lately. My friend at work is on sprint and using speedtest his 3g speeds are consistently much greater than mine. But I don't know if I want to keep my Inc until January 2013.

Well I'll be with big red until they actually take away my unlimited, and willing to buy phones retail value if need be. I can't give up my free wifi via phone through internal modem. I use my phone (gnex) as a hotspot for everything and would be lost without it....lol. Monthly is 72.67 every month. If that changes I change. Tc

I plan on doing the same thing when the new iPhone (yes, sorry) comes out in Sept/Oct. I've been a Verizon Wireless customer since I was 16, and would end up paying about $20 more a month on their new plan as well. Verizon has good coverage where I am, so I'll either buy it unsubsidized and keep my unlimited data, or switch to a GSM month to month provider.

The Shared Data plans work great if you have someone to share it with. Engadget, Android Central, et al have done the analysis and these are good deals for groups of 3 or 4 people who use less than 4GB together...for individuals like me it's a really bad deal. I would basically pay $30-40 more for a capped data plan.
I've thought about getting a retail price phone...you can get an Inc 2 on ebay now for $250-350. But then I wonder, why settle for an old phone, when, for the same price, I can get a brand new, unlocked GNex and be free of all this. Coverage is a concern. Support is a concern. Verizon has been fantastic for me on both. But I live in DC and friends with AT&T and T-Mobile are happy with their coverage.
Still haven't decided...but I appreciate everyone's thoughts and feedback. The Incredible dev community has been just that....another reason I'm looking at the GNex...gotta follow the devs.
Yeah dude I'm considering a nexus for my daily driver. I'm already on tmobile and pay $15-30 a month. They have a $30/month prepaid plan, 100 voice minutes, unlimited texts, and unlimited data (first 4 or 5gbs at hpsa+ speeds). Beats any Verizon plan for a single user. Only thing is you have to have T-Mobile coverage in your area. I get better coverage on T-Mobile than Verizon in some places where I live

Big Red's BS is the reason I left and went PP years ago.
It has worked out very well.

I was not lucky enough to upgrade before 6/28 and now im stuck on this angry little boat. I swear to god I'll be the last mofo on 3g. I'm the only one on my plan. Data tiers are complete bull****. A complete rip off the consumer.

My wife just left sprint because of crappy service and support, and went to straight talk. $43 a month with tax, unlimited talk text and data, and here service is excelent. It even comes in at the beach where vzw has no service. But straight talks best android phone is still junk. If i could get my inc or another newer better android phone flashed to straight talk, i would leave big red in a heartbeat.
Woh im only use Rp 45.000 or 5$ per month for my Dinc for unlimited data plan. it's cheap and enough for social media and download apps..

I tried straight talk and was not happy you could not bring your own device and that the data was throttled back,
With page plus its the same network , you can bring your own device and the data is throttled back.
I have had good coverage when I travel.
Just ran the numbers for all the lines on our plan and it is better for us to stay with what we have now. If we do upgrade we will go retail or upgrade and opt for the 2GB non-shared data at 29.99 It will keep our price the exact same and the lines that have unlimited can keep it. It also makes it 10 dollars cheaper for us to do 3 lines with 2GB data than shared 6GB data. I totally get the new plans and such, but it suck to only be one phone on the plan.
If we didn't live in the middle of nowhere we might change, but VZW offers the best service for us.

So you can get a non shared data plan? When i went on the vzw site to do an upgrade, it only gave me the shared data option starting at $50 for a gb.

Have you tried calling VZW customer service? I went into my local store last week and asked the gal at the counter what I needed to do for my stbxw will be getting off my account and getting her own account. She said in my case that she made a note in the computer allowing her to take her phone/phone number off my account. But once she did that, then I needed to call customer service for them to change my family share plan to something else, because they no longer sell a unlimited data plan so customer service would have to make my account a single tiered account so I don't get cornered into a share everything plan and lose my unlimited.

That is my understanding from the rep I spoke with on the phone on Thursday. I was told the 2GB plan would still be around for any line I would want to put it on. I think it would for sure be something you would need to call in about b/c I don't see it listed under online options.
i had the incredible, went through a bunch of phones, lost some money, but ended up on a nexus with unlimited data. now that i only have ~9 months left on contract, im thinking of going to tmobiles $70 a month unlimited everything. its more then i get now, for a lot less. if you guys are in the market for used phones, try swappa.com. really good site. ive used them several times. nexuses can be had for $360

Tmobile prepaid plan

I want to get the 30$ PrePaid plan and I saw there is a site to order online and get a discount with free shipping. I read it on this site or androidcentral. Anyone know what it is? I'd rather not buy it at walmart for 30$ plus tax.

Just go to T-Mobile.com and order a micro sim card for .99 with free shipping. Once card arrives activate it online under their G4 Prepaid Plans and choose the plan you want. I ordered 2 Sims and they arrived to me in 3 days.
http://callingmart.com
That's what you're looking for. You have to first sign up through T-Mobile, and then you can purchase refills from there.
Is it the tmobile monthly plan for 29.70? That gives me hspa+ 42?
EDIT: I need the one that gives me unlimited everything or whatever with the 4g data 42 hspa.
I don't think anyone gives unlimited everything for $30. The cheapest for unlimited everything might be $45 and thats probably with multiple lines. T-Mobile has a prepaid unlimited everything buts its $50.
That's the $65 plan then I think. Wont get unlimited everything for $30. You can get it from Straight Talk though for $45/month using T-Mobile's network if you rather (or AT&T).
its a great plan

Im using the same plan atm... its obviously worth the price. I got it in Walmart or you could just buy the prepaid card package online or bestbuy and then activate online.
For you... recommend online or you go to bestbuy, bestbuy mobile, or tmobile store to get the card but you have to activate online and you have to get the sim card cut because they arent micro sim cards.
So whats the best route then? I mainly want it for calls and data. I dont need anything over 500 minutes calls and 5gb data. That would be nice. Eff texting and all that I use google voice.
I ordered the SIM card activation Kit from the T-Mobile website for 99 cents and free shipping. When you get the card, you simply activate it with the given instructions via their website *linked from the kit* and choose the $30 plan. I never thought I would talk more than 100 minutes in a month, but apparently some chicks like to talk a lot... I wound up going over, and had to re-up that 100 minutes already. But there's also the Vonage phone app, which I'm now using as much as possible, and have invited my contacts to download. If all parties have the app, calls are free, and the call quality isn't half bad at all IMO.
I'm also trying to figure out how to get Google Voice to work via GrooveIp and some other methods, so once that is done, I doubt the 100 minutes is going to matter at all.

What about data?
BUmp
Data on the T-Mobile $30 dollar plan is "unlimited" but it gets throttled after 5 gigs/month. So anyway... 5 gigs per month at full speed. 42 Mbps is the "theoretical max" in some markets, not that you'll actually see those speeds. My wife gets about 15-16 Mbps.
Overage charges past 100 minutes talk is 10 cents/minute. So if you talk for 200 minutes (100 minutes overage) per month the total cost will still only be $40 per month (still less than other options at $45 per month).
The $45 dollar straight talk plans will throttle data at 2 gigs, I think I read. And the other drawback is that you can't "roam" on straight talk like you can on a plan with T-Mobile.
My wife is on the $30 T-mobile plan too, its a hell of deal. I'm going to getting it for myself too, soon. If you have good T-Mobile coverage where you live its worth it to give it a try. No contracts! ... change the next month if it does not work for you.
To get around the 100 minute talk limit:
While at home (or connected to any good wifi network) we use the GrooveIP app (with google voice). At home is where we might have long conversations with people... so all of that talk time is totally free (does not use any minutes). I've found the call quality of GrooveIP on wifi to be quite good (once I turned on echo cancellation).
GrooveIP does not work well over cellular data networks (stick to wifi for GrooveIP). There are other options available to use Voice over IP (VOIP) so that you can avoid using minutes over the cellular data networks. But those other options are usually more difficult to set-up than simple GrooeIP and google voice. We haven't needed to go that far yet.
The T-Mobile $30 plan is working great for us. I can't wait to get a me an N4 too and get myself on the same plan.

I have tried Groove IP and find I get better quality with Talkatone. In fact I get better quality when i call 909 390-0003 a free test number (you talk to yourself) than I do with my T-mobile connection.
Hey guys! To get your prepaid plan a little cheaper, try going through calling mart. The plans are discounted a little, no tax, 3% off with code ca3p-1207, and when you refill the next month you get another discount. My $30 plan costs me $28.51. They email you the pin instantly. I've been using them for a few years now and highly recommend them!

I have the $30 plan it gives me 5GB HSPA + then unlimited slower service after, as well as unlimited text and 100 minutes of talk. To get unlimited calling and texting and 5 GB of HSPA + and then unlimited slower speeds the plan costs $70.

Exactly what everyone else has said Eric. Unlimited, with 4G speeds up to 5gigs then they throttle. I've yet to hit that 5 gig mark though. I consistently get around 14-15 Mbps and am very happy with those results for what I do. For $30 it's quite amazing, really.

Anyone recently ported their number to T-Mobile?
I was doing it through their website and I got up to the "Fund your account" step. I kept getting an error saying I had to choose an auto date pay but there was no such option in that screen. I closed down my browser but now I don't know if the porting process was a success. I can't use the activate code that came with my SIM card anymore.
Get the Walmart family mobile 45 for first line and 35 after,it cool only thing they throttle after 250 mb. But I'm on WiFi all the time,so it great

So I got my micro sim card card. Now how is the best/cheapest way to get the monthly 4g data plan with only 100 minutes of talk? And calling mart doesn't have the monthly 4g plan. Their 30$ plan is only 30mb of data and 1500 minutes.
