You cannot root without first unlocking the boot loader.

This guy is wrong. Motochopper will root without unlocking the bootloader. Then use bootunlocker from the play store to unlock the bootloader without wiping your data.

Or you can simply unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, boot in recovery, wipe cache, and then you will boo normally without any data loss.
The secret is to not boot after unlocking without clearing cache.

Just to confirm that motochopper works on stock locked 4.2.2 without wiping data.

This is what I did, I did format data from TWRP so naturally I have no OS installed right now but I can't flash a ROM either since I keep getting Error 1 on TWRP. System partition will mount every now and then and then unmount
can you get screen shoot with other phone ? what is version of twrp you have now ? and phone locked or unlocked?

Unable to OTA or flash update for OP5

Hi, a while back I managed to flash the Open Beta 3 for the OP5 but I ended up losing my files because of encryption.
Anyways, I'm not able to OTA or dirty flash any updates. I've tried both stable OOS 5.0.2 and the Open Beta 5 updates.
This is the message I get: https://i.imgur.com/wigXV3f.png
unless you relock your bootloader you won't be able to update. i tried everything. make sure you backup your data before you relock bootloader beacause this process will wipe everything.
cmd code to lock bootloader - fastboot oem lock

Yeah that's really annoying, that's what happened the first time when I lost all my data.
What steps do you recommend for backing up? I have Titanium pro. So I would basically have to backup, relock, wipe, flash, root and restore?

yes
Seems to be like deadlock
Do as full as possible backup of your current system, apps, data.
Export it to external storage.
Unlock the boot-loader. /≥168hrs/
Install the same firmware.
Root your phone.
Restore the backup.

Why to install the same firmware?
After unlocking bootloader, he'll already get a clean system...

Because for me it always is better to start as clean as possible.

Can I get root access without wiping my data after unlocking bootloader?

I recently unlocked the bootloader and I already logged back into everything after losing my data and now I don't think I will be able to recover access to every account again so can I somehow get root access without losing data?

Make a backup with twrp or orangefox and then flash magisk. After reboot normally the phone is rooted or bootloop, then you have your backup
