Does anybody know of a way of reducing the backlight brightness below the stock settings?
I've tried various screen filters, such haxor Screen Filter, but these apps are rubbish IMO. All they do is apply a grey transparency filter over the screen, they don't actually reduce the backlight brightness The result is a trick, the screen looks darker but it's really only because the white pixels are made grey. The problem with this approach is that it messes up the contrast and colors, and gives a washed out look.
I like to sometimes use my N10 in a pitch black room, which needs a very dark screen. My old Galaxy Tab 8.9 was good for this, because the backlight was able to go much darker than the N10. The thing is, I know the N10 hardware is capable of having a darker backlight because if you don't touch the tablet for a few minutes, the screen first goes dim before it turns off.
I would like to be able to manually activate the very dim screen setting, or better still, have a lower brightness range available in the brightness settings.

Htc Hd2 has only one flaw: outdoor display contrast. in the bright day contrast is not on the iphone display level.... if there is a possibility to increase display light and contrast?? i try lumos but result is same as before... I dont want to use antireflect foil or anything similar ....
I suppose that's very subjective. I use lumos with my own settings for the brightness curve (linear with a deep slope) and I can use it in daylight with no big issues.
In case you wanted to test, you probably could set the screen brightness to 100% manually from manila preferences to see if that suits your need, and then agjust lumos curve to your needs
I try again with lumos .... probably something I was not well set up ...

Lumos gives you control over the backlight. You can set up minimum and maximum backlight as well as the backlight intensity curve (vs external light intensity).
The built in auto backlight feature is very weak. It is fine for indoor use but it does not seem to get any darker in the pitch black and does not get much brighter in direct sunlight.
I find myself manually adjusting it everytime...
Agree - the automatic backlight is not working sufficiently. You all need to log this with HTC customer support so they can add it to the next firmware release. Issues really need to be logged sooner rather than later as this phone is going to soon be too old to warrant HTC spending any more time fixing things.

Hm, well I recognized that the Auto-Backlight is sometimes "slow". But not always. If I walk from a bright room into a dark room the display gets darker. But sometimes it stays quite bright.
Perhaps I give lumos a try. At least to compare.
But when Lumos has so many options to set a brightnes curve, won't you find yourself setting up an adjusted brighnness curve everytime because there is no curve that fits to every situation?
Sometimes there is bright sunlight and shadowy corners, sometimes there is a thunder-storm and barely light.
The light gradient won't be a linear one .

What are your Max values with HD2? 1178 at mine.
0 is Min value but thats clear. Only thing that is wierd: When I move to a place not directly near a lightbulb the sensor goes very fast down to zero.
It shows zero but it is not dark in the room at all.
Is it the same at yours?
Even on the dimmest settings, the Vibrant is too bright for me in bed, where the light disturbs my wife.
It seems that, with root, you can lower the brightness further - at least on other phones. Is there any way to do this with the Vibrant?

The "Dimmer" app will toggle it from your current brightness down to 10 but if you find something that will go lower let me know.
It has an automatic brightness control based on input from the sensor. You may need to disable this in the settings too, but I would think it would be automatically dimming itself already in a dark room.

Right, but that doesn't get dim enough in some situations and the minimum brightness you can select manually is 30. "Dimmer" will take it all the way to 10 but I would like to see something that would take it to 1 or 2.
I agree. It's too bright in low light situations.

Try the Screen Filter App from the market. You can get UNBELIEVABLY low brightness. Which means much better battery.
+1 on screen filter. New version now dims taskbar too.

Some custom rom like PA lets you lower the brightness level just by going in setting-display-brightness-adjust. I use it with the app screen filter, that helps a lot when looking at the Nexus inside a completely dark room
So mine turns pink/reddish when setting the lowest brightness setting (ambient display on) - you have to be in a pitch black or very dark room.
When its off, it still does it but its not that bad.
EDIT: If yours does turn pink, will you RMA?
Mine does this as well. I rarely ever see the brightness go that low so it doesn't bother me that much. However what does bother me, is at 50% brightness unless i am looking at the screen dead center the screen has a redish, bluish, or greenish hue on it. Was very yellow the first day I had it, but the yellowish hue is gone.
I have adaptive on. Last night I set my brightness all of the way down. For the first time I saw a slight pink hue. Increasing the brightness fixed this. I am not sure if turning off ambient would have fixed it. If I see it again I'll try turning it off.
I thought was a known feature of amoled. I'm guessing they will all do it at low brightness.
Mine actually got worse. When I first noticed it, it was acceptable. Now its almost reddish already. Some people say its actually a feature of AMOLED. However, when I tried it on a different AMOLED Screen, Note 3 and 4 - i didnt see it.
No, I tried with adaptive brightness on and off and can find no color changes except maybe a slight blue hue when tilting the device and then almost rainbow effect at close to 180 degrees. Guess I got a good screen.
I've noticed weird brightness issue at Auto Brightness turned off and when I set it at full. It is actually going even brighter when is brighter outside and it's getting darker again when going into darker environment and it is making me crazy because firstly I don't want my battery to drain more when using brightness sensor and actually don't like the feeling of brightness going up and down that's why I TURNED OFF autobrightness. Could you reproduce the same behavior?

Yes i have this when dark mode is turned on, Even with Auto brightness off it will still change the brightness when i am outside in the bright sun and it also changes the way the text appears adding sort of black lines on the edges of the letters (to give it more contrast ?). It's a feature not an issue i think it also doesn't happen indoors even when lights change. For some reason it only happens when it's very bright outside.

Yeah, but every feature should have "turn off" button, but Xiaomi couldn't help it with forcing something on us as always...
Under Settings/Display/Contrast & colors try using either Increased contrast or Standard. NOT Automatic contrast.
