[Q] Class 10 SD Memory card problem - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hello recently i bought samsung galaxy s4 GT I9500.
I bought a 16gb micro sd class-10 from japan. When i insert it in my s4 it shows the blank sd card and request to format it. I used this sd card in my previous version s3 and s2. All shows ok. Even when i insert this sd card in another any mobile it shows ok. But it dose not work in S4. I already tried this SD card in other S4. They shows the same problem.
So my question is......is the S4 did not support class 10? or any other way that i can use my SD card in S4?
One think I have to tell you that I already Update my S4 via kies. Before and after up gradation problem is same.

Just remove the micro sdcard from the phone and put it into an adaptor so you
can plug it into your computer, after that format the card using FAT32 only.
Once you do that it will work just fine in any phone including any galaxy S4.
Good luck with it.

Have you formatted the card using phone..??
Do format it using Setting -> Storage -> Format memory card. DON'T format if using any file explorer.

Here is a good way to find out what the problem is.
Install a file manager from the play store if you don't already have
one and see if it recognizes the externel sdcard if it does then go
into cwm recovery mode and see if you can read the external sdcard.
If you can access the sdcard using your file manager but not cwm recovery
or rom manager then the fault is with cwm recovery or rom manger and
perhaps you need to get the latest versions.
What I would do is to go to the playstore and get "goomanager"
which is free download and use that to flash TWRP recovery which
is a full touch recovery system and which will recognize your sdcard.
TWRP has all the options and features which cwm has and even more.
When you are in goomanager just click the menu key and
select "installopenrecoveryscript".
Once it gets done flashing, select "reboot recovery" in goomanager
and it will boot to TWRP recovery.
Good luck!

My solution for the case of "SD Card blank or has unsupported filesystem"

Hi guys. I got a problem with my SD card after I recorded a video on my Nexus One (rom from Paul for very first Froyo over my rooted Nexus). I tried to to mount the SD card to my computer, but after clicking on the mounting button, the card appeared to have something wrong and displayed the warning message "SD Card blank or has unsupported filesystem". I could not access to the data on the card. I cared about my data so I tried to get the card out and used a card reader to read the content of the card from my Windows machine, but it seemed that Windows could not recognized the card. I thought the card was spoiled. I tried to save the card anyhow by trying to format it since I had the backup data on my computer already. Because I could not see the card on my Windows, I could not format it. I tried to format it on my N1, but after clicking on the format button, nothing happened. It seemed that my SD card was really spoiled.
But actually, I found a way that could help to save the SD card for my case. My solution is to try to partition the SD card using the ultility from my Recover section (I am using RA for nexus 1.7.0). The card after partitioning seems to work ok again. So I think the problem for my case is that the recording application already overwrote some data to the partition table on the card and that made my card inaccessible. Partioning the card again will help in this case but about the existing data on the card, I am not quite sure if it is still there. For my case, it's all gone.
Just a little experience to share ...
Hope this solution helps! Am doing the recovery thing now...

You can try to partition your card on an Android phone with RA 1.7.0 (or newer) installed. You can have a look at following page which is about RA for nexus v1.9.0 alpha:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611829
Good luck.
thanks man !
will give it a try... i first have to figure out how to get my phone into recovery mode. the three button method does not work for me.

whoa whoa if you have a galaxy s, do NOT flash the one he linked to. that is for the nexus one only. if you need to partition in windows, try plugging in the card to a reader and opening disk management (type "disk management" w/o quotes after pressing the windows key)
right click the card and hit format
Check your data before formatting it may not be corrupt
I had the same problem, rather than format the card straight away, I mounted it in ra recovery so that it was accessible over usb, then copied off all my data before formatting the card.

My S4 (GT-19505) cannot read SD cards (SD card blank)

Hi XDA Family.
I recently flashed Omega Rom on my Galaxy S4 and everything went well. The next day I played my music from my SD card then there was an error "cant play this music file or something like this" after that my S4 was displaying that my SD card is blank or has unsupported files. The phone recommended that I need to format it using the phone. I formatted it like my phone said but it did nothing. Phone still displaying that SD card is blank or has unsupported files.
The next day bought a new SD card (8gb Scandisk) and the phone read it no problem. I transferred all my music to my new SD card and after playing my music the error appeared again and now both SD cards are showing that the SD cards are blank or has unsupported files.
Re flashed stock rom and stock kernel but still has the same errors on my SD card
Borrowed a memory card reader from a friend and formatted the SD card using my PC formatted it with all know file system. FAT32, exfat and NTFS but everything is not working.
Lastly I tried my SD cards with another Galaxy s4 and they worked without problems, formatted it using the phones formatting capability inserted it on my S4 but still has the same errors.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated guys.
Thanks in advance.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
I have The same problem.
Pls help

Hi! Thanks for replying, I was beginning to lose hope that anybody would reply. Tried your suggestion. Downloaded 3 scanning SD card apps on Playstore but none of them worked. Both of my SD card still shows up as blank in my S4.
This only happened after i flashed a ROM, anything I still need to do to go back to stock? Already flashed an official softwas and kernel.

Hi Good Morning!
Tried that last night still the same problem. Tried the chkdsk on CMD still the same problem. I can buy another SD card but I am just afraid that maybe a week or two the sd card will mulfunction again and I cant forget the fact that my PC and other S4 can read my SD cards.
Two possible reasons. Sandisk SD cards supposedly fail easily but yours is 8gb so it should be ok.
Next reason is Omega Rom bug, I personally don't have this issue but I have a similar one. My Sdcard does not mount as r/w automatically.

Thanks for the reply lamstone, I have read somewhere that disabling the automount helps. Can you help me on how to disable automount? and can I do it if I am on stock firmware?
Thanks
Just use the card reader and adapter and attach it to your computer and format the card using exFAT file system. Then use it in phone. AFAIK the current custom recoveries already support exFAT. So you should be fine for anything. I had similar issue with my 32GB Sandisk Ultra card when I formated it using phone. No issues since I formated it as exFAT on PC.

Hi thanks for the reply.
Tried Fat32, Exfat and ntfs and all of the still has the same error. Actually bought a new 16gb sd card earlier I popped it in my s4 and still has the same problem.
This started happening when I flashed Omega rom. Is there anyhow I can check if I have a stock everything? My kernel, recovery and firmware?
thanks for the patience.
BUMP!!!
Anybody who can help me??
Another update is that I installed CWM recovery Philz Edition and tried hooking it up on the UBS cable and mount usb storage. My computer can now see my sd card inserted on my phone. Tried reformat while my phone is on CWM and connected thru USB cable and formatting goes thru but phone still says SD Card is blank or has unsupported files.
One thing that is strange though is that when I try to copy things to my SD card while my phone is attached to the USB cable my PC freezes like it cant copy any files to my SD card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Same problem

I have the same problem. I bought an 16GB class 10 Kingston SD Card and inserted in my phone . Nothing. THen I disabled Developer options and it appeared. Then I though I will reformat it using directly the phone. Ok. Tried to use it bam "unexpectedly removed " and nothing. Then I tried another SD Card and the same happend first good then removed and so the third one.
Any updates on this thread ? Did you manage to make it work ?
This phone is pissing me off. I am having same problems with stock music player and Goohle Play Music app giving errors on any tracks in my Sandisc 32 gb class 6 micro SD. I have started to wonder if it is related to me using the Samsung Smart dock with a 500 gb external HDD to watch movies on HDTV. It mounts the drive and works great but following day I was try to play music that worked day before and now I get unsupported file type error and other error.
I tried avg to check for a virus(which is unlikely imo) and it shows no virus. I just tried this SD on another android device (Nabi 2 tablet running 4.0.4 and all songs play PERFECT without error. This must be my At&t galaxy S4. Any ideas anyone? I really dont feel like reformatting the sd since it seems to work fine on tablet. Also: I already wiped both music player apps in settings and eventually uninstalled and reinstalled the apps (and another musiv player also) to see if it was cache related. This made no difference.
Edit* oops. After rereading OP... I think I posted this in wrong thread.lol. But my issue with S4 and SD card error with music playback is similar so Ill leave my post unless mod wants to remove it. FYI I fixed my issue(somewhat). Ths SD card is fine as I suspected. The phone has an issue having stock music app, play music and mx player. Either one of the apps was running in background or the system was running sound in background. Hope to not have problem repeat itself. I bet custom rom would fix this if AT&T hadnt locked phone with sneaky update.
You can try flash Rom Cook MH8.
I think your problem will resolve.
Thanks
i think you need to try this.. Get your SD card and try to put in another phone example Blackberry (im not sure if it will work on HTC, alcatel etc. except samsung).
then format using other phone. after formatting ffrom other phone. reinsert the sd card on your samsung unit. then check the storage and try reformatting again using your Samsung.
still nothing
Well. I still do not know how to fix this and I searched and tried almost everything. Only thing that I think might be wrong that somehow the "auto mount SD " does not work.
Because the card is there. The phone cannot see it . Other phones do fine. And in CWM even I can see that there is indeed an SD card but cannot acces the files.
So... I really do not know
i am also having this problem but nothing seems to help have tried alot of thing but yeah :/ sp i have given up on it ! it is a 32 gb sd card loved it.. now i almost got anxiety cus i have so little storage xD hehe well well might buy a new sd soon
My class 4 32gb sdcard too stoped working properly these days.Sometimes it gets unmounted randomly or it doesn't get detected or it shows blank sdcard.I don't know what cause that but the best I could have done is to backup my data and buy a sammy 32gb class10 micro sd.I heard that S4 has problems with sandisk ones.

UPDATE:
My SD Card problems has not been fixed until now!
I just flashed the leaked 4.3 firmware and I tried to insert an SD Card just to try it and BAM! it worked!!! I am now afraid of rooting my phone because maybe the SD Card will not be working again but as long as my SD Card is working I am good!
Anybody who has problems with their SD Card should try to flash this:

64GB SD Card -- Unsupported File system

I got Note 3 Neo, and when I try to use my Transcend 64GB Class 10 Card, I get the following message:
"Blank SD card
SD card is blank or has unsupported filesystem"
The card work properly for sumtime and then suddenly the above message starts to appear.
I have tried formatting on Win7 PC, in the phone - But same thing.
Also, if I use 32GB class 4 card its working perfectly.
Please provide solutions folks... and is their a way to format this card in Fat32, coz in windows there is only option for Exfat & NTFS..
PS: I am on Stock 4.3 JellyBen and the 64GB card is absolutely proper as when I use it in my camera its working flawlessly.

The only option I got in recovery is :
reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache Partition
apply update from cache
There is no option to wipe the SD card (Am on stock JellyBean)
Also, I have just done complete format (not quick) and still same issue. A google search shows numerous ppl are facing same issues but with their S5.
I guess I am the first one with this problem on Note 3 Neo. The only solution is to switch to Samsung MicroSD cards - Someone should Sue Samsung for playing such a ploy.

Try this, put your sdcard in memory card reader and connect it to the phone using usb on the go cable, see if it can be read using usb otg. If it can be read, most probably you have sdcard port issue.

Blank SD Card error. Need Help!

My phone is showing blank sd card and it asks to format it. Nothing happens.
It all started when i removed sd card to insert sim card and when i booted my phone, this happened.
My phone is N9000 Exynos (Indian Firmware)
Things i tried doing -
Flashed Indian firmware using odin (Odin said pass but phone remained the same)
Flashed UAE Firmware(as it was originally bought from UAE)
Did a factory reset using settings
Did a factory reset using Stock Recovery.
Tried this SD Card in another phone
Tried this SD Card in PC using card reader
Used another SD Card in this phone
Update 1 : I installed CWM and tried to mount SD Card through it . When i go in mounts and formats and remove my sd card and put it back , recovery detects it but its unable to mount it. Its not even formatting saying "unable to mount" "idle-unmounted"
I have tried all this but nothing happened.Same error is being shown. Then i finally rooted the device thinking there might be a fix. If the card (formatted as FAT32) is not visible on PC then the card is broken.
If the card is OK on PC but you have problems in the phone you need to test with another (good) card - if that is also not detected you have a problem with the phone (since you said the problem was also 100% stock ROM then it is not software, possibly some pins in the connector).

I have tried this card on pc . It works fine . I have tried another card on my phone and its not getting detected (same issue) also the same card works on pc too. Samsung service center said its not hardware issue but a software. and just because my phone is not bought from my country they refused to touch it without a condition that there is a possibility that phone might get bricked if they touch software and its fully my responsibility if it happens so.

I tried to mount SD card but the X does not stay on when I try to pick it. When I click on external SD , it only shows " up a level"
The card works fine when using any of the ROMs and can be seen no problem, it just doesn't show in recovery.
I USD the same card on my note 3 and did not have a problem.
