I recently was looking to upgrade my phone, which currently is a LG motion (For those of you who care) running metro PCS service.
My question is, does anyone know if MetroPCS service allows for a Google Nexus 4 to run? The phone supposedly (according to threads on the internet) can actually run LTE even though it doesn't claim so. Some say that it's signals and services also can run with metro PCS. I wouldn't mind only having Phone and Text with them, so if the cost of data is necessary that could be arranged.

Wrong. MetroPCS is now with T-Mobile and they plan to merge the networks together.

We knew this day would come and thanks to a trio of screenshots leaked to the boys at PhoneArena, we know an actual date. Beginning June 12th, MetroPCS customers will have the opportunity to use compatible unlocked GSM phones which include iPhones, Android, Windows Phone and certain feature phones. There’s no telling just how many devices out of the Android lineup Metro customers will be able to choose from, but it’s clear T-Mobile and MetroPCS are moving fast to offer the latter customers with more options. The possibility of it working is there, but it'd be on T-Mobile network and not MetroPCS but they're one entity now... but since they're one entity I'm sure you could use TMo's network as a MetroPCS customer. Just wait for the official word for more details (June 12th... rumored)

MetroPCS is still CDMA so how am I wrong? They have a boat load of CDMA phones out there in customers hands that would need to be traded in. What they more than likely will do is eventually force those MetroPCS customers onto T-Mobile as MetroPCS has no infrastructure, just customers. And just because MetroPCS will be offering T-Mobile devices doesn't mean they will also offer prepaid bring your own phone plans for T-Mobile service. Their business model is to sell you a phone at full price and then you get a no contract month to month service plan. It would be cheaper to just go to T-Mobile and get a no contract plan than to have to buy a T-Mobile phone at MetroPCS, sign up for a plan, and then switch sims over to the Nexus 4.

You're right but I think he was trying to say that the two companies have merged and they are working our connecting their networks to one. MetroPCS customers will have to switch to T-Mobile by 2015. q

Hey OP MetroPCS is cdma and we all know that and no you can't bring your phone to MetroPCS to get it turned on but hey when they finish the merger with T-Mobile then maybe the Metro stores (new T-Mobile) will be able to handle that for you. But if you are looking for prepay choices look into Walmarts plan, Simple Mobile and T-Mobiles prepaid since they are all along the line of MetroPCS.
Also dont get caught up in the LTE hype for speeds. If you are lucky enough to live in a HSPA+ area there is nothing wrong with 18 - 25 mbps download. Anything over a constant 5mbps is good enough to stream HD in most cases. Also LTE gonna destroy your battery life... Just my opinion guys

Yes its compatible the use each others towers that's how T-Mobile has some LTE markets (source is the link in the post above)

Yes you can run metro PCs on nexus 4..now that T-Mobile bought metro u can use it on tmobiles network through metro and it is pretty good. I just activated mine today

Go to the MAIN metro store in your local area to do it..on the phone all the reps said no but i just went in to the main dealer in my area and they got it to work..the small stores most likely cant do it because they have to program it for some reason..its not just putting in a sim card like tmobile or att..metro pcs is even taking any unlocked phones from att and of course tmobile (getting my sis an iPhone from eBay because of that)..they are now a hspa+ network so it should work everywhere.. I was actually very surprised they were able to activate it but inside the store they had a notice saying they are changing all their phones to T-Mobile's hspa and to upgrade phones soon. And their price was actually cheaper then the 60$ they advertised for unlimited everything

In my area, the update has only just rolled out sometime last month. Go too your MetroPCS store and ask if you can, they should be able to give you an estimate. In my case the update was a substantial improvement too speed making the release obvious.
METROPCS is GSM now so any unlocked phone or tmobike GSM phone will work. They no longer sell CDMA phones but will support the network through 2015 before it goes full GSM.

Sprint is a CDMA network. It doesn't use SIM card, and the user data is stored on the phone. You cannot use it on other networks.
So getting it without contract is just... without contract. You need to be on Sprint's network for it to work.

Ummmm.... JUst cause it's a CDMA network, doesn't limit it to Sprint. It can be unlocked & flased to Metro PCS, US Cellular, Page Plus, Virgin, Verizion and numerous other local or regional CDMA networks. Just need to have the know-how.

Theoretically you can swap the radio chip inside and add a sim card slot too add GSM support too. I don't want to waste time arguing with you on that, but if you do know how to unlock a Sprint CDMA phone to use on Verizon yourself, congrats, you can make big bucks with that knowledge.
BTW, to those who are considering getting onto Sprint for the Hero, note that Sprint's network cannot do voice and data simultaneously, so if you are downloading stuff, you won't be able to receive. It's like the GPRS problem on GSM network, it's just that current Sprint network faces that problem even on 3G.

that's not true, if you are downloading something and someone calls the download stops and the call is recieved. atleast that is how it has worked with my touch pro, vogue, and titan.

As I understand, CDMA networks need to register the ESN of your device to their network, but most CDMA networks (at least Sprint and Verizon) no longer allow the registration of ESNs that were originally registered to other networks. Apparently Verizon used to allow 3rd party ESNs, but no longer do this, but I cannot find any "official" confirmation of this.
i.e. if you have a Sprint phone, it will have a Sprint ESN and Verizon would refuse to add this to their database.
I believe there are methods to clone another ESN onto a new phone, but I've no idea how "legal" this is.

I never made mention of the legalities of the process.... I was just stating that it can be done. I do it for Metro phones all the time. I also "heard" it is possible to unlock unlimited data for smartphones on Metro as well.....

This is BestBuy's modus operandi..which is charging more (lots more) than even Sprint's MSRP. So if one is considering buying at full price without contact, go to Sprint directly. The flip side is that they usually have better new/upgrade-contract prices than Sprint since BestBuy doesn't do mail-in-rebates, they make it instant.
Some folks on spintusers.com are claiming $429.99 Sprint full price.

I'm currently a Verizon customer and I hate the fact that their network is locked down because it's tied to CMDA. I like the idea of buying unlocked phones and popping in a SIM. Now that Google is selling unlocked Nexus phones at a ridiculously low price, I'm tempted to switch.
What I do like about Verizon's network is the quality. I've only been on at&t and Verizon and I can say that Verizon has a much better network than them in my experience. I'm also in a solid LTE area with grandfathered unlimited data.
Are there any people out there that have experienced both Verizon and T-mobiles networks? I know comparisons will vary from location to location - I'm in San Diego. Any advice on whether or not I should switch? I'd hate to switch only to learn that the network stinks and then lose my unlimited data when I go back to Verizon.

There will likely be a "cool off" period with the Nexus 4 as there was with the Galaxy Nexus, meaning you could get your money back after 2 weeks (or 30 days, I can't remember now). That's under the assumption you bought from the Play Store.
Then you could get the T-Mobile Prepaid $30 plan and test out T-Mobile's network for however long you have to return the Nexus 4. You'd just keep your Verizon line open while you are experimenting with T-Mobile.
The worse that you'd lose is a month's of prepaid service and maybe some repacking fees. The best is you'd be happy with T-Mobile and lower your monthly bill. Oh and there are plenty of people willing to take your Verizon Unlimited Data Plan for free and you could turn around and sell your Verizon phone.
That's what I did with the Galaxy Nexus and I was able to keep my number while being under contract (there's a Google Voice trick) . Verizon's LTE is faster than T-Mobile's HSPA but it's definitely suitable for my needs. I happen to think LTE is more than what average users really require.

I would double check if the Play Store will allow returns for the LG Nexus 4, although I wouldn't see why not. I can't look up the site at the moment.
I was assuming that you are still in a contract. If you are, you can let someone assume your contract. It's called an assumption of liability and people will snatch up a contract that has unlimited data, especially with Verizon.
As far as building penetration, I don't notice much difference at all. I get better reception at my job and that is a 5 story building.
I think that the higher frequencies can become problematic if you are far from the tower, if there are many people using the same tower, the weather, etc. I don't believe in saying T-Mobile has bad building reception because it uses higher frequencies. But, it does play a factor.
You can also go prepaid on atts network. There are a bunch of mnvos, most notably straight talk.

I'd say stick to Verizon. They have more cell towers and what not so reception is very good. Also, they had a better selection of phones in my opinion.
I just switched to T-Mobile from Sprint. I have an original Xoom on Verizon. T-Mobile has excellent voice coverage and pretty good data. If you are going to be traveling out of the US (which I do). T-Mobile is the way to go. It is hard to beat Verizon's coverage and speed domestically. You can't go wrong with either. I had a Galaxy Nexus on Sprint and it was a bad experience. Phone was great, but the network was horrible. My phone drained in about 2 hours when not on Wi-Fi. Hope this helps.

You call Verizon Wireless assumption of liability department at 1-888-832-4540. You give them the first and last name of the person taking over the contract. Also, make sure you get your phone number ported to Google Voice beforehand. If you have questions about porting to Google Voice under contract see this thread:

Thanks. I was thinking about porting to voice but don't want to deal with MMS not working.
To be honest I just got switched from Verizon to t-mobile and though Verizon has more coverage T-Mobile network is still very good at least in Ohio, data isn't as fast as LTE but that's a given. Still HSPA+ is still quite fast.

Needed a little help currently here in the good old U.S.A and on verizon wireless i am thinking about switching carriers one reason is my phone of choice is the Htc One, also thinking of switching because of the things that i can do on some of the other networks here in the states like talk and surf at the same time not only on 4g lte but also on 3g hspa+, which is another thing that i liked because if im in an area that 4g lte is not available i can fall back on hspa+ which is faster than verizon cdma 3g network that tops out at 1.5-2mb down and .4mb up.
The reason why i am holding on to verizon is that I have unlimited data no throttling or data overages and I am planning to buy my phones at full retail to keep me out of contracts with these companies and also keep my unlimited data because i use alot of data i mean 8gb a month avaerage over 4months i guess if i stay with verizon i would have to settle for the samsung plastic s4 or wait for the google x phone. just want to hear some opinions or advice thanks in advance.
Sprint is your only option for unlimited data. They don't have HSPA, but are substantially cheaper than Verizon.
I just switched from Verizon to ATT yesterday coming from Unlimited as well.
I switched mainly because of the lack of service in my area of work and lack of availability of phones. Does going from Unlimited to 5Ggb suck, yes, but I also have service where I work and will be able to get the beloved HTC One. I'll just need to keep an eye on my usage from now on.
I pay $10 for every GB I go over which doesn't sound too bad to me.

Straight Talk is AT&T MVNO and offers "unlimited" everything at $45/month, no contract. I have been using it with Galaxy Nexus for over a year.
When my unlocked HTC One arrives I will trim the sim and use it.
I'm joining my fiance's AT&T plan here in NY, there data for two lines isn't horrible. $150 for Unlimited Talk/Text and 4GB shared data for $150 for a few business/pleasure phones isn't too bad, she's paying $100 a month for her non-smartphone though, ****ing crazy!

you order the HTC One on locked can you provide link plz, and i did not even think about staright talk that looks really promising same network as AT&T unlimited calls and text plus data unlimited? now im sure they throttle usage over a certain amount just not sure what that amount of data would be.

Straight Talk uses Verizon towers where I live, my wife too uses it with her gnex

ok just looked over somethings, thinking im staying with the plan to go with AT&T 1. I would get 4g lte with them 2. wont get throttled after 100mb-300mb of data usage.

It does but HTC One 801e I have ordered does not have frequencies that are needed with T-Mobile.

Then I say Sprint. They are about 90% done with their Network Vision upgrade in Chicago.
You can visit Sensorly.com so that you can see how their LTE coverage is in your area.

Being new in the USA I am not very familiar on the way the carriers tie different plans to different phones, it seems a bit strange to me.
So I have a N4 that I bought myself and my company IT manager requested the service with AT&T. My corporate data plan they put me under is called "Smartphone Unlimited Add-On". So far so good.
Now I want to take advantage of the Galaxy S3 subsidized by AT&T by making an upgrade. BUT my idea is to keep using the N4 myself, and give the S3 to my girlfriend.
The thing is that when I order the S3, the portal forces me to change the data plan. It says that the S3 is not compatible with my current data plan, and wants to change it to a plan called "Domestic and International Data for LTE 4G phones" (or something like that)
We all know that N4 is not LTE, and as I said I want to keep using it and give the S3 to my gf. Will the N4 work with this new plan that they are forcing me to change?? Is there gonna be any practical difference, or this plan tiering is just for marketing / billing purposes?

the n4 is lte, its compatible with band 4 lte, and i use lte every day. the thing is that you have to enable the lte(need a custom recovery or root). anyways, it sounds like they are trying plan tiering/or trying to get more out of your bill. anyways, im not on att, im with tmobile, so take my answer with a grain of salt

Yes I know the L4 unofficially supports LTE in band 4. This is T-Mo and not ATT.
However my question is the opposite... will the N4 (with no LTE enabled at all) work the same with a LTE plan? In other words, will it still work fine on HSPA+ with this plan?

it probably would. and a few att areas support band 4 lte. not many, but there is band 4 in several att areas. what area of the us are you going to?

Im in Miami
I don't really care much having LTE in my N4. I'm fine with HSPA, it works very well. The thing is that I am forced to change the plan in order to get the subsidized S3 for my gf :laugh:

Allow it to make the change. The actual change doesn't happen until you activate the phone. So when you receive the phone, just call AT&T and let them know you will not be using the phone on your line after all and they will remove the pending data plan change.

I have a Note3 on Verizon on contract but not being used. It's taking up a line and costing me money and very far from end of contract. A friend of mine wants to buy it from me. I told him he can have it for $350 (ETF cost) so I can lose the unused line charge. He uses AT&T and it's the only carrier that he can use at his house. I have read that Tmobile SIMs can be used in Verizon phones without problems, but can AT&T? Will he lose certain bands? Is my plan with the ETF buy out ok? Anything anyone can tell me about doing this would be appreciated. I'm trying to talk him into Verizon Prepaid but he is an AT&T fan because of logistics.

As far as I know because ATT and Tmobile are GSM based, Verizon phones will not work on their respective networks and vice versa. Phones between CDMA networks like Verizon and Sprint should be interchangeable however. At worse just have him put his SIM in your phone, if voice and data works then it's all good. .

To my understanding you can run a Verizon phone on att however it will not get lte. I've heard of people getting straight talk and using the GSM sim and changing some settings and it works. Do some searches on Google for Verizon note 3 on straight talk. I assume that the same will work for att since they use atts network
