[Q] want to help my grandpa - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to help my grandpa fix his color nook. It had your software on it, but now it's not working. Where do I go to start fixing it? He used to come here until he became ill. He had a couple of strokes and has some problems. My mom said it is ok for me to help, but I would have to learn how myself. What do I need to do?

1) your software doesn't say much you need to tell if it's custom Rom or has custom recovery etc..
2)not working doesn't define the problem tell if it boots up or charges etc..
3) no one can help you if u can't help them telling whats the problem

Are you GrandPaBear's grandson?
Sent from my SGH-I717

Yeah I think that was his name. He's staying with my aunt Laura tonight so I can't ask him. But I think that is what he said. The nook starts to start up. The little robot zooms to the screen and an arrow goes around the robot. It stops and just stays there. Grampa had me take a little card out and turn on the Nook. It turned on and worked as a Nook. But when I put the card back in, it doesn't. So How do i fix the card so it works?

Here is his original thread. I'm sure the info you require is in there somewhere. Wish I could help, but I know absolutely nothing about dual booting.

I'm sorry I couldn't write back, I had to go to soccer camp for 2 weeks. I talked to grampa this morning, he was grandpa bear. grampa has me reading about the android. Told me to ask here if I have a question. I can do the stuff that grampa can't do for him, someone just has to tell me or show me what to do . He doesn't talk very well and his hands shake pretty bad sometimes, but he can use the nook if it is flat on a table. He had me order a new card for him. When it gets here we are going to fix the nook. right now he uses my moms ipad, but doesn't like using it. He said he was afraid of breaking it. He said to tell everyone thanks for the help. We are going to his farm to check on his goats and stay for a week so we won't do anything to the nook until we get back.

[Q] HTC desire hd lost&found

hello guys, I just found a HTC desire hd in the bar where I work, its been 2 weeks since the guy lost it, what should I do, I know that this phone might be traced by internet or gps, or maybe I dont know, maybe I'm wrong...now I just want to keep it. any danger?
thanks
It probably can be if he's set it up right, but you can use that to help return it to him (assuming that's what you're intending). As far as I know it does use GPS.

The right thing to do is find out who's phone it is and return it , its pretty easy with the data kept on phones "now a days".. The HTC online service can used to lock the phone , wipe data , track phone etc. But this feature is useless if the phone is off or the sense account is deleted or changed on the phone.
Correct me if I'm wrong !

Previous post is completely correct. I'd just return it save you the trouble. I mean put yourself in their shoes, how would you feel if you lost you phone?
Do the right thing. Return it.
Hand it in to your local police station, make sure they log it and give you a reference number. Then after a set period of time, possibly 4 weeks, if the owner has not claimed it you can legally claim it.
However, the owner has probably reported it as lost and had it network barred. Not sure if you can then get it removed, but that is the right thing to do.
you'r right dude thanks

yeah man I got your point ty
I found some guys phone once, read his msgs and txt a few people to let them know I had found it. He rang me up on it and asked me to meet him at a certain place and time, I told him I was working at that time so would have to meet him an hour or so later, he went mad at me over the phone saying I should meet him when he said! I just laughed at him and told him Id be there later. After meeting up with the guy he showed no appreciation for what I had done to get his phone back to him, some people huh?
Wow miclair. That is just sad. You have much more class than I do. Still showing up and giving them the phone after they get.mad when you were trying to.do the right thing. I commend you for that.
Its maddening when you see the ugly side of humanity. Luckily along my way. I have met some remarkable people to still keep some faith alive in the goodness of people

When I lost my htc hd 2 year ago, I was so anxious and hopeful the person will return it. Given the situation I lost the phone, at following situation
1 am,
Empty land car park,
Poor light,
Less than 10 minutes from suspect lost spot
I was rushing my son for 24 hr clinic.
maybe hes gonna use Phone Finder app.

Can I restore phone if it's been factory reset?

So ok a bit of a story but maybe someone can help me out here.
So I gave my girlfriend a vibrant, and unlocked it for ATT and threw Bionix on there for her.
Well, I then got it back from her after a long fight over how it was her birthday present and after our 5 years together she had the nerve not to even pick up her birthday card or other presents I had gotten her... I had gotten her the phone a few weeks early mind you just to make her happy because things were going fine.
Well, i'm almost certain she's been talking to someone else, but before she gave me the phone back she was smart enough to wipe the phone and put it back to the way stock Bionix is. I'm not sure how she wiped it or what she did but is there anyway I might be able to restore the phone so I could do some snooping?
I'd like to know honestly if i'm being lied to... so if anyone could help, i'd appreciate it.

Lol... This made my morning. BTW.... No.
Hey it was worth a shot, and it's better to have proof then to be lied to constantly. Like I said 5 years, so it's not like this is some whatever girl, and i'm just curious to know if she's doing something behind my back... But she was smart enough to delete anything she could get her hands on it seems, pictures, everything
Daamm! Sorry total bummer

If you cannot make her feel secure, she'll let you go easier than you can ever imagine.
lol thanks for the words of wisdom there. She may not be lying but just recent events have led me to believe there is something going on on the side lines, and honestly if thats the case i'd rather just know and be on my way.
But I also don't want to accuse and then ruin what is left of what we still have haha.
This is a ****ty situation sir, but unless there was a backup made, then there is now way you can restore it. You might check to see if there is a backup. If she was smart enough to delete it, she may have been smart enough to make a backup just in case the phone messed up for some reason.

Hey Guys
I'll try to keep the story short. This is my girls phone. A few days ago she gave it a bath in some Earl Grey tea. She noticed this after she got to work and realized her travel mug was open in her purse. She pulled the battery and called me. I picked up the phone a few hours later and gave it another bath. This time in rice for 36 hours. Put the battery back in and fired it up. Nothing. I took the phone apart and used electrical cleaner on all of the components. Back to another rice bath. Put the phone back together and booted up. Green light comes on and it stalls on the start screen. After a minute:
"Modem did not power up (0)
Starting RSD protocol support"
A quick trip to your forum and some searching led me to believe it was indeed a hardware issue. Just because I had some time to kill I used this guide to unlock the bootloaders, root and install CWM.
Tenfar's recovery-en-goapk-0630-1029
Booted back up and still the same modem message. I was able to boot it using Boot Android(No BP). I can confirm now that the screen and all rockers work fine. It will stay booted for about 2 minutes before it reboots itself. I'm assuming because it's trying to talk to the modem and getting no response. Don't really feel like taking the time to logcat it because I'm getting rid of the phone. I called MOTO and they said they would replace the MOBO for 125 with tax.
Since I already got her an HTC Vivid we've decided to see if anyone here at XDA might want to buy the phone before I ebay it. Being a member I would much rather see it go to someone here that can use it. I would like to get about $100 for it. If you have any questions or want more info please send me a PM as I might not check here that often. Also if anyone can think of steps that I've missed to recover this I'm open to suggestions. Sorry if this was long winded I just wanted to give full disclosure.
Thanks

[Q] New phone and bricked after 15mins!!! SERIOUSLY???

Hey there fellow member.
I was really happy when i bought my new phone (Samsung Nexus S) and really want to explore it and see what the phone can do! So... i plugged in the battery, opened the phone, and all was fine. Since i connected the wifi it asked me to update to ICS rom 4.0.4, and i said, sure why not? The rom when was finished from download asked me to restart the phone. A small installation bar appeared and then... BAM blank screen! I was like WTF i didnt even moved the phone. In 15mins i realise the phone was bricked (new world record or something )
So now the phone is not opening and i thinking to use it like a hammer or something. Before i do that, is there any way to revive it? I searched for solutions into the forum but the best solution was an application on Ubuntu OS. So... is there any solution to do in windows OS?
Although i think the best answer is to get the phone back for refound....
Anyways, waitting your ideas and please /soothe me
If u can get refund/exchange go for it, don't even try to temper with phone, just go for refund/exchange if u can.
take it to a sprint store and tell them what happened they will take care of u

Did you buy the phone used? If so I'm betting its already rooted so the ota will do that. Try a battery pull or a hard reset. (power + volume buttons)
Meh, not a record. I bricked my nitro HD in 10 minutes. Flashed CWM to the wrong place.

[Q] Dead Nexus?

Hello there. I went to Los Angeles last month and after a little research on tablet pcs, I decided to buy a nexus for my wife. Since I had no time to order it online, decided to visit a retail store at Santa Monica called Macmall.
I was bringing this as a gift, so I bought it and opened it right away just to make sure it was working properly.
So, I went back to argentina, wife happy with her nexus, until yesterday.
She came crying saying that the nexus was broken.
The screen is showing nothing but vertical lines. The touchscreen is responding to finger swipes and sound works, but of course all of that is useless since screen is defective.
She swears she didn't hit, drop or wet the tablet pc, I did check it many times and it has absolutely no signs of mistreatment.
I turned it off, soft reset pressing power for ten seconds, removed the cover and the battery, and once, I was able to see the Google logo properly but quickly vanished into lines again.
So... What options do you think I have?
Nexus is not being sold on my country and Google is giving me no support at all.
I contacted Asus through their website, still waiting for an answer but I'm not sure if they will help since I'm far away from USA.
I'll appreciate any help, or piece of advice you can give me.
You might be in luck. I had a problem with the speaker once, thinking it was the hardware, and I thought I would have to return it. I think for fixing your screen problem, you should reflash the stock Rom. If you are unfamiliar with what I am trying to say, it is basically like reinstalling the stock Operating System (Android). Find out how to reflash the stock Rom. Since you could see the Google logo properly, i'm pretty sure it isn't hardware. Might just be a corrupted stock Rom. Here is a guide that should work: Click Here. It will wipe all of your data/storage so it will be like your Nexus 7 came out of the box.
Best of luck recovering it!
Edit: What is also very weird is it seems like it happened suddenly. Not out of the box, but randomly.

Thanks for the answer. I may have not expressed myself correctly.
I'm not seeing anything on the screen but those annoying vertical lines.
After removing the battery a few times, once showed me the Google logo, just a one second flash, and then the lines again.
The only person I saw with this very same problem, had it as you said, straight from the box.
I asked my wife and she updated the nexus a few days ago and barely used it, so even if it sounds weird it could be a software issue.
Question is, will I be able to reinstall the stock OS just guessing where to push, I mean, with only those lines on the screen. I'm like... Blindfolded

Oh now I see. First, anyway, do not manually remove your battery. That might affect something. To force shutdown hold down the volume down and power button for about 10-20 seconds until it turns off. Now, with the vertical lines, now i'm pretty sure since you clarified, it is the software. I think I know a fix for reflashing the stock Rom. Use this toolkit: Here. Click the option "Flash stock and unroot". Try that and it will Flash stock. Try software updating once it works and you could boot up without the problem. If it still has the problem if you software update (Unlikely), then just do that again and keep it at stock version.
Hope this helps!

Once again, thanks.:good:
I'm still not allowed to post any URLs, but I found a video on youtube of a guy with exactly the same problem.
Just search "Jon417silka nexus" and you'll see it.
I'm dowloading this NexusRootToolkit you recommended, it's +200MB so it'll take a while.
I have no skills on flashing or rooting any device, but I have read the instructions and doesn't seem to be too complicated.
I'll be awake all night trying to solve it if it's necessary.
I'll let you know how it went in a few hours.
Well... I finally downloaded the nexus root toolkit.
It was kinda easy actually, just had some hard time trying to enable the USB debugging mode, since... well i can't see anything on the screen.
I was able to download the drivers, and run the stock rom but, unfortunately, no luck on the screen.
Im just seeing green lines which i assume is the green android logo on the center on the first boot or something.
by the way, google answered me today saying somthing like, they cant do anything since im outside the us, so i have to contact asus.
It's too bad flashing the stock rom didn't fix it, I'd say it seems to be a hardware problem.
Even if you were in USA, google will only help you if you bought it within 14 days from Google Play Store.
You should call Asus Argentina [ http://latin.asus.com/Static_WebPage/Service_center_argentina/ ] and explain what is wrong, and give them the serial number. The number is located somewhere on the box, and on a removable sticker on the bottom back of the Nexus [As well as in the Settings, but you cannot read the screen so that is useless]. If you can't find the serial number, you might be able to get it via adb, but I'm not sure.
Asus has a 1 year warranty on tablets, but I'm not completely positive what they will say since it was bought in USA, and you are now in Argentina. But hopefully they will be able to RMA it and repair/replace your device. gl!
Yeah, it has to be hardware. I think you should follow Sikagoon7's advice and return it because it is under law. It couldn't be your or your wife's fault, because as you described, there were no scratches or anything. I guess it just might be a bad device. Replace it because the Nexus 7 is so worth it.
Probly gpu chipset. Its getting distorting at high frequency. Since first logo is a small frequency image and some times provided for BIOS its show normal. (Thats my guess)

I was giving up all my hopes on this, plugged the nexus to the computer and clicked the OEM lock to return to its original factory state.
You know... I don't want them to say my warranty it's void for messing with it.
Of course, I didn't noticed any changes, swiped my finger a couple times and then...
WHAT THE....
The lines vanished and screen started to function properly, a few lines were noticeable for a few moments, now the screen is fine.
Now things got even weirder...
My wife it's been using it for two hours, with Monsters Ate My Condo (which may be pushing the cpu a little bit) and it's working flawlessly.
Problem is... I'm pretty sure that if the screen turns off it will die again.
Is there a way to keep the nexus always on, never go to sleep, just dim the screen to minium brightness or something...
Any other solution you guys think i can try is also welcome.
Please understand that returning this to Asus will be my last resort (if they decide to accept it, which I'm not sure).
Once again, thanks for everyone's time and replies
If you can not turn off your screen without it breaking it I would RMA it back to Asus.

No, I haven't.
I don't even know where to start...
The fact that I live in Argentina may be a complication.
Since Asus is does not sell the Nexus here, they probably won't help me at all.
And the distance may be a problem since shipping to USA is quite expensive.
I contacted Asus via their global website, still waiting for an answer.
This option kind of sucks but maybe you should sell it cheaper to someone on xda have them use the warranty exchange and you could buy another one also possibly from xda. Like i said it sucks but it may be your best option at this point.

I'm gonna bump this old thread I started about a year ago, to share with you guys the rest of the story.
I contacted north american ASUS RMA by email since Google is not taking any responsibility for their tablet.
And latin american ASUS won't take my warranty as valid.
I tried to explain my complicated situation to the RMA guy. It was a little hard to understand since my english is not flawless.
But I had a friend flying to united states, he carried my broken nexus with him and sent it to repair as soon as he arrived.
Tricky part was: he was only staying for 10 days. So ASUS had ten days to receive, repair, and send the Nexus back to my friend so he could bring it to Argentina.
I crossed my fingers and decided to wait, fortunately they did a good job and now it's working back again.
However I noticed the battery doesn't lasts for as long as I expected...
Anyway thanks to everyone for sharing ideas and for your time.
