S4 lte problem - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We all know 4g phone can't make phone call while 4g on, all 4g turn to 3g while making phone call or incoming call automatically, recently, I bought a new HTC one, I found that it turn back to 4g within 3sec after every phone call, but my S4 takes about 10sec to do so, I have a note2 4g too, it does the same, is this related to system setting or hardware problem? Thanks

Do 7 seconds really matter?
Me Gusta!

Some people may say the extra few seconds are a benefit.
When the phone is on 4g and you make a call, doesn't it take a few seconds to switch to 3g or 2g to make the call? If so, once you ended a call, the next call, if made quickly would initiate quicker ad the phone is already on 3g or 2g.

Doesn't matter, just wondering what make this happen, is the software part Samsung can do better? In note 2 I thought it's related to Samsung own CPU, but now, my S4 using a same CPU as HTC one one,

Duplicate Text Messages

Hi all,
I just got a Nexus 4 and am using a prepaid T-Mobile Sim with the 100 minutes unlimited data/messaging plan. Everything is working great except I am receiving duplicate text messages most of the time someone messages me. I was wondering if there is an APN setting or something else I can do to try and fix this annoyance. Was wondering if anyone else was having this issue.
Thanks.
My friend had this same issue.
The way we fixed it was power off the phone, take out the sim, power back up, leave the phone for 5 min, and then power back off.
Popped the sim back in and it was fixed.
When I see them next I'll ask to check their APN to make sure.
Hope this works for you.

Is it from people who are on various networks? Sounds like it could be a problem on their end. Every once in a while I'll get duplicate texts from people on MetroPCS, or Sprint if their networks are on the fritz. So try to have people from different networks text you and see if you still have the problem,

Same problem with T-Mobile germany... Senders are in different networks. I am receiving single messages up to 8 times. This happened on the i9250 nexus before, too. Same number, different sim card, different phone. Maybe related to cyanogenmod 10.0/10.1, as i never experienced that issue in stock. (To be honest, i was never long in stock Rom). The Problem occurs most times Ehen the phone is rebooted, or comes out of flight mode.
Which roms are you using ?

In general it's usually because of the sending party. Did you port your number also as that does cause it most of the time?
Nope, i just got a new sim card from my provider. I am a t-mobile customer for 14 years now, and never ported that number to another carrier.

Not sure if you have noticed this, but it seems to happen when I briefly lose service. When I get signal back I have noticed that is when I am getting the duplicates. I've only been on T-Mobile for a few days after I ported my number from Verizon.

AW: Duplicate Text Messages
I made a support ticket @t-mobile germany. They told me, that this must be a bigger problem related to the network itself. The next time it happens they want me to call them and provide time of failure and number of sender to them.
But, it didn't happen again, yet.

How do you fix it? I ported my number from verizon but it just recently started happening (maybe the last few weeks),. Using PA, most updated version.

HSPA to HSPA+ problems

Hey all, I know that switching from 3g to HSPA+ on the T-Mobile network Is intentional, but almost all the time between my pushing a button to send data and the device switching to HSPA+ there is usually a 20 to 30 second delay which isn't acceptable. Sometimes it doesn't even switch or when it switches no data is transmitted, which sucks if you are trying to use sip calling (VoIP), it ends up in a dropped call or about a minute of waiting before the call is actually answered. Does anyone have any solution for this or experience the same thing?
(Even now I can't post this because it won't switch... with full signal bars!)
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
My nexus 4 sometime does this, with full bar and the network showing HSPA+, it will take a minute or so to load a page. Even when speedtest show over 10Mb. Other time it usually work fine with the 3-5 second delay while it switch to HSPA+. I test my brother tmobile s3 side by side with my and his webpage load faster then my while my network switch from 3g to HSPA+.

Fast dormancy is something that T-Mobile uses as a form of network management and also as a "battery saver". This is what your experiencing when your phone switches to UMTS (3G) when the data connection goes dormant.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
I've had the delayed switch intermittently from every phone I've had on T-Mobile. It will come and go.
I chalk it up to a network issue and not a device issue.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Thanks for your answers guys, I understand it is how T-Mobile has configured their network. My only gripe is that sometimes it takes about a whole minute to switch. Thanks again.

This happened on my first nexus 4. Nothing fixed it. Nothing. Hopefully your situation is different. If nothing works, flash back to stock and start the RMA process. Google said it was a hardware failure with mine by the way.

The periodic loss of signal was there since day. I still have it on my new one. Others do as well, but one day it went out and never came back on. I believe it was a different issue than just random signal loss. Google said hardware failed in it. You have to contact Google to start an RMA. I'm also not implying that your signal won't come back on at some time either. Personally I would flash everything back to stock. Go to a t mobile store and get a new Sim card and if no signal still then contact Google

Under settings, then data, then mobile networks, then to network operators.
let it search, even if it doesn't find anything or errors.
Then click choose automatically.
If you frequently travel out of 3g/H areas, you need that checked or the phone won't roam from tower to tower. you will get no signal.
Also, if that don't work, you can try clicking on a network it finds, and let it register, your signal may come back.
This is a common problem with those that don't live in big cities or near full strength 3g/h areas.
The phone doesn't handle tower handoffs well. Crappy LG modems.

I'm currently going through the RMA process over virtually the exact same issue. However, I've been running franco's nightlies lately and up until he restored the HSIC/wifi stuff to stock in r154 I was actually experiencing less data drops and rapid tower swapping (constantly going from 3g to H and back rendering consistent data inoperable). *shrug* I feel as if it's something in the hardware on the cusp of failing because sometimes it does it more and sometimes it does it less. It's rather weird. I'm also on T-mobile towers through an MVNO (Straight Talk).
I just cancelled and switched to ATT go phone.
I have RMA'd 2 devices, tried multpie new simcards, relflashed, tried new radios, and nothing worked.
It no longer switches from 3g to H on ATT network.
It stays in H constantly.
Also, no more signal drops or loss of signal.
I have 100% signal all the time now.
The data is a little more expensive, but worth it for the coverage so far.
It's not your phone, it's the tmobile network.

GS4 data very sporadic

My s4 data is bad to kick off and back on. It has done had since I first got it. I have 3_g at home and it's very solid signal, I never lose signal in fact i keep 4-5 bars but data kicks in and out all of the time. My old phone was very solid never lost data signal ever. I have tried the 3 different radios and several ROMs but they all do the same thing? It doesn't show roming and it looks to be on sprint solid. I know I've read about losing data due to flashing but mine works fine then it doesn't work, off and on, off and on all of the time... Rebooting sometimes brings it back, switching radio off will sometimes too but sometimes I just have to walk away for 10-30 min and it'll pop back up... any ideas?

I will assume that you have updated PRL and profile. If not, do so. If that does not solve the issue, call Sprint to see if thry are working on towers in your area.
Yes I did update profile/prl as well. I have a second phone we keep in the house (as my house phone) but it keeps data signal just fine never drops either. I haven't called Sprint I may try that but I really think its buggy firmware

I called Sprint, wasted 10min of my life lol. But I set force cdma, we'll see how that goes. No lte here anyway.. in fact 2g some of the time.. gotta love sprints data (shoot me)

Hope the problem works itself out. One last suggestion would be a factory reset (that is if you didnt wipe data through rom flashes). Doing so can potentially fix a lot of different isses....maybe this as well. Good luck

Your signal bars reflect your voice signal not data. Download this for real info on what your phone is doing
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.staircase3.opensignal
And check this site for LTE deployment info, you could be getting NV deployed in your area http://s4gru.com/index.php?/forum/39-markets/

I'll also say my old Galaxy Nexus and HTC One X did the same - I'm almost 100% sure it's normal behavior in Android
If I'm not mistaken it's because your using 3g to call someone. Now if you were on 4G and try to call somebody most likely it would still say 4G on the top notification bar because it's using your non LTE band to call somebody and allows you to use LTE for data purposes so you would be able to hop on the internet and browse at the same time on a call. Now I know with AT&T you can call somebody and browse the internet while on 3G.
