If so what are you using it for? Phone or other. Need ideas not going to throw it out due to its beautiful history.

I'm afraid I'm also not using mine for anything, sitting a draw, but like you I'm definitely gonna keep onto it.
Alarm clock? You could get a 1.0 ROM or something and delete almost everything but the clock (and probably need a launcher for it).
Doorstop? It's pretty tough and chunky, and the chin might help.
A remote/Bluetooth keyboard for some other device, e.g. tablet. Idk how this would work, I've looked into it before but can't find answers.

Def sounds like a good idea for a remote. Maybe for you tube app on my TV or something other. Maybe give it to my daughter and tell her to have a ball.

Funny, I just found one of these phones at a garage sale today..... Perhaps some resource-unintensive Linux distro could be ported to it and it could be used as a small Linux box.

Still using mine as a WiFi hotspot. Since I have a free data only SIM with a volume monthly quota of 30GB

I'm using mine as a sacrificial phone when I'm kayaking. It's perfectly capable of calls, SMS, and MP3s still. The touchscreen works through a transparent drybag. I can be confident that if I should wind up in the water and the drybag should fail, it's no great loss.

Mine is with my 2 year old daughter. She play games on it ,really there is no other use.

I want to use my G1 as a screen keyboard and mouse for my raspberry pi. It would be great if I could make it usb plug and play so I could just plug it into any pi and be off.
I'm using my old mytouch 4g as an IP camera. The g1's camera isn't as good but that's another idea.

Using mine as a backup phone and experimenting.

Mine is sitting in a backpack full of electronics. The camera is broken, though. It doesn't matter; It's running a ICS ROM which doesn't have camera working, anyways.

I lend it to my friend, he still uses it as a primary device !!! he was never interested in smartphones, so he is very satisfied with that phone

I Love G1
Mine, I'm still using it as my primary phone, I really love it.

I just picked up a package deal consisting of an HTC Radar 4G, a MyTouch 3G and this G1.
I have unlocked all of them (using a Lycamobile Sim). Unless I really fall for the Radar, I will probably sell it (worth more than what I paid for all 3) and keep the Dream alive :good:.
But first, need to get it up to Froyo. It will do what I need. It's the model T of Androids.
The MyTouch had a bad sim card holder, so I needed to do some solder work and hack the holder so that the card just falls in from the outside rather than slides in. The back holds it fine, but it probably not very salable (though the outside is in perfect shape)

Update-
Got the G1 rooted and running on Cyanogenmod 6. It was a struggle to find coherent , relevant, current (not really current, but currently working) info on how to work this ancient piece. It has given me a taste for it , anyway and I hope to try another ROM.
Frankly, I am just rambling to get my post count to 10 so I can ask a question in the modding forum....

It was sitting in a laundry hamper that I was using to store a bunch of old CDs and other stuff I don't use on a daily basis. It so happens that the hamper fell from the top of my bedroom closet and now I'm thinking of ways to use this thing, but the first thing that came to mind was to use it as a distraction for the kids. Now that I think about it, it could be used as a remote with keyboard and all. It's running CM6, but I'd like to know if there is a ROM that is very minimal. My phone has no ability to make calls anyway, but everything else works. Any ideas?

This phone is frickin AWESOME!!

I don't know that I've had something THIS nice before. I've had an iPhone for a while and the app store is nice but this phone with the Android system is really neat.
I've got Call Recorder working that records both sides of any call I want. It'll even upload to google or evernote if I want.

Swapped from the atrix and never looked back. Getting 7 hours standby per 10% of battery so I'm lucky I don't have the battery drain issue. Though having said that, the screen really sucks up power when you've got it on.

I feel the same way as all of you. Just got the SGS2 Friday night and absolutely love it. I rooted it within a few hours as I wanted to Titanium backup but for now I am totally happy on stock. The phone is absolutely brilliant. I love surfing webpages now, no more lag even if I choose to play a flash video within the page. Video recording is amazing too. I was a little nervous reading about issues people were having but I have experienced none.
I also love that you can turn the soft keys off or extend how long they are on for. Samsung really thought things through on the design of this phone.

Is your old NB good enough to soldier on? If so buy this as you'll find it will replace your NB for all but the heaviest of functions. Me I'm caught between this and anAcer Revo 100. I'm worried they will stop selling the revo....

What about a "media player" ROM?

Along with many others, I am moving on from my still perfectly usable EVO. I have a daughter who wants an ipod touch and I was thinking of converting the EVO. Since she wants the ipod, I was thinking of MIUI with the phone components stripped out. I don't have the skill to hide everything (nor the time to learn). But, I would think basics could be done by most of us...unless there is someone with that skill, and more interest than just me in this becoming a ROM.
ROM or not ("not" meaning a one off that I do for my use), the EVO will be a more than suitable mobile media/game machine as it's been for me since launch day. Anyone else done this?
MIUI I would think. Use Root Explorer to rip our the phone stuff and other .apk you don't want. Leave in Market and maybe Amazon Appstore so she can get games and music

Exactly. If the phone is taken off the account it wont work a phone anymore since Sprint towers won't allow it to make or receive phone calls so it could be considered a mini tablet at that point (powerful mini tablet tho). If your daughter needs to make purchases she can use the wifi radio to connect to the internet.
The other option is to disable the radio... there is an app on the market called network that will allow you to control if you want the CDMA radio to work... you could install the app, disable the radio and then remove the app. This way IF you ever need a spare phone you can revert the process and have the CDMA radio back online.
As far as removing the phone apks... I have seen many threads that indicate that doing such thing might be a bad idea since most seem to bootloop when they are removed. It make sense that it does, after all the EVO is a phone.

This. I once accidentally deleted the phone apk with root explorer and everything went to hell. Had to pull the battery and do a nand restore. Although, I'm sure if you had a ROM that was designed to operate without a phone apk, it would work just fine. Tablets don't have them.

I don't think I will even have to "remove" core parts (wasn't concerned since I have a nandroid of synergy from last night), just hide them. I would have liked using this before, but the 4G was a killer for me...until now.

The Quest to Turn a G1 into a lean, mean, GPS navigating machine..

Howdy,
So alas I have moved past my good ole flashin' days of the G1 and got the new blackberry 9900 about 2 months ago (loooove it).
But I found my awesome G1 in my closet and have a mission in mind. To transform it into a rockin GPS Navigator. Alas Blackberry (nor iPhone for that matter) do not have an amazing GPS Navigator like google's navigator (they pale in comparison). So I am thinking itd be swell to use my g1 solely for that purpose.
I am going to worry about the specifics of tethering it later, or possibly just load up the maps via wifi before I leave my home..
I am also going to buy a dashboard holder thing (any suggestions) and a car charger. However right now I am focused on getting the actual software on the beast.
I flashed it to SuperD (a 1.6 rom) which is super stable and fast and not flashy. Which is exactly what I need.
Basically I am asking for suggestions or any hints you androiders can think of to help me in my quest to made the g1 into a solid GPS. I will keep this updated on it, hopefully with photos down the road in case any one else would like to follow suit. Do you have any tips for using the navigation app, or ideas for the best settings or rom/which version of android to use?
Thanks!
And stay strong G1-ers
Let me know how it turns out.
I might I do the same.
Thanks in advance.

Can anyone think of any serious uses for our G1s? On the net there are tons of pages with funny stuff like using old phone as a doorstop (the G1 would be too fat ), but who would use a G1 as a media player? We have new phones or dedicated mp3 players, and it's not good enough to use as a retro emulating games device. Any ideas?
I replaced my G1 with my LG G2X.
My G1 would not even play angry birds, It would show the loading screen and never load or goto a black screen, Crash and end the APP.
You can get a cheap prepaid ANDROID phone for under $50 on sale that will walk all over the G1. Also check Craigslist for some good deals.
I have a CRICKET ZTE 500 SCORE.
It has a lot of uses and including a media player. VOIP and GPS.
I use it with a Bluetooth speaker to play MP3'S at work.

Spotify for Tytn (new owner)

Hi, might sound crazy, but I have just purchased a HTC Tytn off ebay 1) because i've never had one 2) because I heard back in the day they were great and 3) because I needed a cheap 3g replacement while my current oneX goes in for repair (AGAIN!). Oh and 4) because im craaazzzzy
Anyway, not knowing a whole lot about them, is there a way to get spotify mobile to run on this fabulous phone? If so, where, and what do i need to prepare for it?
Hopefully receive the phone tomorrow.
Cheers.
ok heres an update, got the phone today, and have to say im impressed, so would be a shame not to get the most out of it...
Anyway, installed spotify for windows mobile, and it launches but due to the native screen resolution I cannot see enough to be able to operate it.
Is there a way I can zoom out or any other work around that would allow this app to run on this great phone?

[ROM] Captivate Touch - CM10.1 Stable Modification

First off, I deserve very little credit for this. All of the heavy lifting is done by the great CM team. All I did was make a few modifications to their work.
This is a no phone, "Touch" version of CM10.1 stable for the Samsung Captivate, based on my previous work with ICS and GB roms. I have removed the APKs from the ROM that control phone functions and most of the cell signal icons. The dialer is still there, but the phone does not work, INCLUDING 911 CALLS."Secret Codes" work through the dialer.
Install instructions: (If you are here I am sure you know how to search so I will not provide direct links, but I like GooManager)
1.) Install cm-10.1.0-captivatemtd
2.) Install cm-10.1.0-captivatemtd - nophone_v1
3.) Wipe Data/Factory Reset
4.) Install JB GAPPS Package
5.) Reboot
You will get a FC error upon boot, but otherwise everything seems to work. I will update the not working list as I come across issues.

I RECOMMEND USING ODIN ONE-CLICK AND FLASH BACK TO STOCK BEFORE INSTALLING THIS ROM!

For those of us with kids, it allows them to play with their own device without risk of a 911 call!
I use mine as a baby monitor now connected to our IP cameras.
Also battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY improved.
And yes, I know that you can just turn on airplane mode, but 2 year-olds are quite resourceful. Likewise, simply removing the SIM card does not prevent emergency calls.
The thought was for a more elegant solution.

There are people that like to reuse what they already have around instead of buying new stuff. If you think your way is better this ROM wasn't made for you no need to call it useless just cause you have no need for it. That's a bit harsh dontcha think? Besides, how is it ruined? All you have to do is flash another ROM, which if you are on this site you can pretty much do in your sleep. :good:
This phone has been flashed no fewer than 100 times and probably closer to 200. It has run every version of Android and CM available as well as AOKP, MIUI and my Froyo and ICS Touch Mods. It has been flashed back to stock and loaned to more than 5 friends, returned and reflashed to something else before being loaned out again. This phone has paid for itself over and over, even though it has not been my primary phone since 2010.
Besides, 30$ baby monitors are crap as are the $150 video ones and if you use a subscription service, $15 mp3 players won't solve your needs either (or at least not very well.)

I for one have always enjoyed this guy's idea and have used it and also copied it to my other devices, it beats having ny captivate as a $200 paper weight and same can be said about my skyrocket, gs2, gs3, note which would all be useless without this form of a modification.

glad people are finding this useful. I'll try to pop in now and then to keep it updated.
Great idea! This ROM will be the solution to my problem. I use my captivate for games, music, camera and so on and i dont need the phone part. Will test soon. One request, just like you took CM10.1 and took all the "phone" stuff out (you know what i mean) , can you do it to other roms like captivating, pac, supernexus....? Thanks in advance!
So does the GPS not work AT ALL, or is it just or is it just spotty without a cell signal? I've been using my Cappy as a speedometer in my beater 4runner and for offroad navigation with Oruxmaps, but everything else about this ROM sounds exactly what I've been looking for since I upgraded to my Note II. I pulled the SIM out and it works pretty well other then the GPS sometimes taking long then expected, but if I download A-GPS data before I leave it locks on fast. I'm hoping that is the only issue with this ROM, and not that it just flat out doesn't work.
Keep up the good work, and don't listen to ignorant people who just wanna put you down for making something a bunch of people will find useful.

Fair enough....thats all I wanted to know. I will say that ROM upgrades have made it 100 times better then it was when stock, but its still sucky compared to my Note II. Even with cell stuff turned off it will only take 10 seconds to lock on most of the time, and rarely over a minute or two.
I'll have to give this a try in the next day or two.
