Techradar review - Xperia Tablet Z General

So the Techradar review is now out: http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/tablets/sony-xperia-tablet-z-1133193/review
Glowing it is.
I went into a local Currys today and had a play with the tablet and I was mightily impressed. It was very fast, highly responsive and overall a pleasure to use. The speakers did sound a bit tinny, but I wander if that can't be sorted with some fiddling with the equalizer.
Also I found the display to be rich and saturated, but it wasn't pin sharp like say my Nexus 4. Rather it was comparable to the Nexus 4 which is decently sharp but not razor sharp.
Overall, I'm very impressed!

That's my review for Techradar.. I can confirm it's a great device. Fire away with any questions..

What's the SSD/flash IO performance like? Does it start to bog down if there's multiple things going on at once (like Play market updating in the background while a browser is trying to open a web page, or something like that) ??

I hope not, that's an Asus exclusive issue so far

I just looked at a cnet review, and they really criticized the tablet saying that it has horrible wifi speeds. Can you confirm?

Hi, about WiFi issues and all around review, you can read here on InsideHW (my review):
http://www.insidehw.com/reviews/mobility/7777-sony-xperia-tablet-z-slim-and-mean
To cut long story short, WiFi is average when it works - up to 4MB/s, but it disconnects relatively often.

I havent come across this WiFi disconnect issue with my XTZ it works perfectly and i love it. It seems like there is a few lemon's out there unfortunately.

I've had my XTZ for about 6 weeks now and it's never once disconnected from WiFi. I've just done a speed test and got 6.5Mb/s, which is about as fast as my home broadband goes. So if there are tables with WiFi problems, it must either be a dodgy router, or a faulty tablet that will be covered by the warranty.

Why is the HTC One X, Asus Prime and even the Nexus S being used as comparisons still?

[INFO] Screen comparision - Xoom vs Transformer vs another IPS screen (SmartQ R10)

Images are here:
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/17404-screen-comparison-versus-a-xoom-with-pics/
I actually managed to get my broken device working again. Btw, I think my system.img is floating around the Intwerwebs -- if you come across a "asus.t101.system.img.gz" that's 312MB expanded, I would recommend you avoid it as that's my half-baked Chinese firmware that seems to have caused all my screen issues.
I curse you for giving me yet another reason to obsess about when my Transformer will ship from Amazon. Can't wait to set it next to my Xoom and compare...
Wow, quite a difference between the Xoom and the Transformer. Amazing that Asus could undercut the Xoom by so much while having a far superior screen.
Wow, I don't mean to offend Xoom owners, but the screen quality is TERRIBLE
I am glad I got the TF instead of the Xoom now, but the waiting game is killing me. What the heck is SmartQ? Never heard of it before...
Wow! What a difference!
I think that the screen by itself mostly justifies buying the Transformer over the Xoom.
Regards.
The screen quality on my transformer is fantastic, too. Love it!

It's a slow-as-molasses Telechips Android 2.1 device. BUT, it was the first 10 inch Android device to have an IPS screen and it's what I still use for comics reading - it's been around since December.
Since I don't have an iPad, it's my "similar to iPad" screen device that I use in my comparisons. The Transformer will be replacing it, once I can find a case for it!
Wow
10char
Interesting... I have been looking for a non-apple IPS tablet for a while and I guess I missed it. But from your tone, I didn't miss much.
Since you seem to be collecting tablets, how do you like your TF compare to G-Tablet, or NI Adam in terms of performance? Sorry if this is getting out of topic, perhaps you should do a comparison review in a separate thread?
I should receive my TF-101 tomorrow. I have IPad 1,2 and archos 70. I'll post some pics
Great news to hear that you fixed your Transformer. Those comparison shots so how great the IPS screen is and make me glad I didn't give in to the iconia.

I do feel like I'm collecting, but not for long. The Xoom is being returned this week, once I wipe it and clean it up.
I did a comparison between the Xoom and GTAB / Adam last month, and I felt that HC was a but sluggish in the graphics department. This TF101 might have similar issues. But, it's still a speed demon versus my R10, so the latter will eventually get retired and possibly sold.

I was using SCViewer (which is what is shown in the pics). The reason is that it was the best balance of speed / stability I could find on my R10. But for the Transformer, I might have a few options like ACV, JJComics Viewer or even Perfect Viewer.
I also have a purchased copy of "ComicReader Mobi", but I haven't used that too much as it really wasn't designed for tablets. However, it's probably the most stable comics reader I've used so far. The developer just needs to correct a few things, and I think it would be my app of choice (I've actually posted on his forum about this, as I feel that the definitive cbr/cbz reader has yet to be released).

I was wondering how the Transformer held up in outdoor sunlight. Any reports? I don't see myself using it a ton outside but it would be nice if it is usable outside. More importantly would be how does it hold up in normal daylight inside a vehicle. I can see myself frequently using it on long rides so hopefully the screen and sunlight can get along!
Any thoughts from people who were able to pick one up on launch day?

According to the same preview that pic came from, it's usable outdoors in indirect sunlight. Mind you, that's British sunlight -- not quite the same thing as, say, Florida sunlight. ;-)

Yeah, I returned my Xoom after one week with it. The screen was unbearable, especially coming from the land of AMOLED (Nexus One) and IPS (iPad) screens.

Engadget Review... No Flash?

Pretty insane review: http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/28/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-review/
Very impressive, especially coming from them.
Anyway, he says that Flash didn't work on his review device. Does it work on your shipped devices?
Is the phone as good as the review? Pretty glowing (and surprising) sentiment from Engadget.
It works fine, but he fell into the same trap as me... it just needs turning on!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054685
Its turned off by default.
Just download flash and enable it in settings..

Oh wow, I really hope that wasn't the cause in Engadget's review device... That would be sad haha
Yeah its sad that an iphone user had to do the review. Just watching the video of him demonstrating the phone and trying to close a folder hurt my brain. I was yelling backbuttton the whole time in my head.
Its one of the very few devices getting a 9/10 score from them. iPhone 4, Atrix 4G got 9/10 as well.
Nothing new though, I'm still convinced this is my next phone. Only should the device feel so bad in my hand that I start crying will I buy a HTC Sensation.
lol or cry
"Update: Thanks to our reader David, we've now figured out the root of this little problemo. Turns out the browser required us to tick an "enable plugins" box to get Flash running. We did so and, sure enough, in-browser Flash was a go. Frame rates have been consistently high across multiple websites and videos, which is in keeping with the rest of the Galaxy S II's performance."

What if David tells them it's actually an iPhone, will that make it 10/10
I also posted the same in Engadget, asking them to check in settings. Oh Well, atleast they listened to someone! Overall, i am impressed by the review, and the fact that our SGS2 got a 9/10 from engadget shows that it truly is a hallmark device!
Cannot wait to get it.
If this phone had a version of TouchWiz that removed the redundant hub features, and a few other little issues Vlad found, it might have been as close to a 10 as they've seen. They've mentioned on the podcast that there might never be a 10/10, but the SGS2 is nearly there.

Goodbye Transformer

I had my transformer for about 2 weeks and today I decided to sell it because Im completely dissapointed. the browser was choppy, so were the home screen swiping and the battery life was least of all unimpressive.
I did try the stock rom, Revolver 3.6 and Prime 2.0.6 roms, along with different browsers and launchers and it just didn't do it for me me unfortunately
I know I'm gonna get quite a bit of heat for this but my 1gen iPad gave me a better browsing and much better battery life than my TF. the only good thing about TF was that I got to do all the crazy fun things (rooting, flashing, tweaking) I do on my Android phone for this two weeks, but its just not good enough.
so there you have it, just wanted to rant a bit, hopefully the new releases of Asus will be better.
I guess they aren't for everyone.
Some fools prefer to be separated from their freedoms.
Shame to hear u giving it up so soon. I've had mine for about just over a week and so far its been nothing short of excellent all around. Exact opposite of all your negatives.
Good luck with your ipad.

ipad1 browsing was always awful for me. checkerboard all over the place, and having to reload sections of a page as you scroll is obnoxious. browsing on these devices is never going to be great till typical web development changes focus.
I had an iPad 1 before I bought MT transformer. Great product. But the transformer blows away the ipad 1 and 2 in my eyes. So much more your allowed to do. My wife uses the ipad still and ios 5 made the product alot better. But its still no transformer. I am sad to say I am going to sell my transformer and rely on the ipad for a while, or until the new transformer comes out I should say.

Are you expecting that we care?

I know what you mean, I got fed up with the battery issue and a few other things like no spell checker and really bad lag while typing on some websites/forums, I could go on about printing docs and a few other things but I won't*
*I've put my tf up for sale and bought a lovely netbook which in most ways kicks the tf ass, but do you know what I've started to look at the tf in a different way
*I've managed to solve the battery life problem, it's a bit of a slaver but I sorted it on my tf, now getting really good battery life, I also sometimes use a different browser for different sites, an example would be techradar, the stock browser just can't handle it so I use opera, I know you shouldn't have to use different browsers for different sites but that's just how it is
The tf is not a pc and I've stopped looking at it as such, I now look at it as a multi media device that can browse the internet and send and receive emails and play games, for that it's good

almost the same here man, my girlfriend likes the iPad much more than the TF. the iPad works for our purposes, watch movies during long flights or train trips which we do quite often. and more importantly it lies around in the house for casual emailing and recipes n stuff and it needs charging every other week or so!something I couldnt get with the TF. however, coming from an android background Im constantly bored with it (the iPad) coz there s not much you can do with it. (try telling that to some filks who find it obligatory to start barking mad at the first person who says the "i" word )

The battery issues some have is as simple as installing the auto airplane app from the market. With moderate use of my TF, I can get just over a week of battery life. As far as browsing, in my case, opera has worked so well on every website that I've totally stopped using the stock browser. My sister has a Ipad2 and it totally blows compared to the TF for general use, which that is all apple products are good for in my eyes. I can't even imagine what the TF2 will be like.

Just got the Note...Wow! (from Iphone 4)

Usually, when you eagerly await something....read all the reviews, watch the video presentations, when it finally arrives, you're usually a bit disappointed that it didn't live up to the hype.
That's completely the opposite of the NOTE...its awesome. After using it for about 5 minutes, then going back to use my iphone, it felt like a small child's toy. There's no way I could go back to using a phone of a lesser screen size, the Note really is a computer in your pocket. everytime I look at it, puts a smile on my face
Also, not specific to the note, but coming from the Iphone 4, being an IOS user since the 3G, I was blown away by the Android OS...it simply works; unlike the IOS where everything requires a workaround or a complex series of tasks to do something as simple as load a movie.
*Got mine from Handtec, polish version, just inserted a new SIM card on Rogers network, everything worked perfectly. Didn't have to input any setting for data or anything. Customs opened my note, but I think Handtec also did, as the language was preset to English?
Glad you like it! When I first got mine, I liked the big screen, but thought it was maybe too big... but now after using it for 2 weeks, even going back to a 4.3" screen feels wimpy! :-D
Good mate, i am from the iphone 4 too and i get mine tomorrow and i cannot wait!!
It makes me feel sick when people talk about the iphone as its the phone from god. People do not know what they are missing. I pray I get my phone from bymobilephones on saturday. Driving me mad!
I've been extremely happy with my white Galaxy Note so far! Display is perfect, no dead pixels or anything else *knock on wood*. The image is very crisp thanks to the high resolution panel and with the 2.3.6 update, it is butter smooth. I really don't have any complaints yet and I've had the phone for a few days. I plan to do a review for my website very soon and I did make an unboxing video of the white one here: http://www.techinferno.com/2011/11/15/unboxing-video-samsung-galaxy-note-white/
I agree. The only time I feel a bit sad is when I use the browser. I found the iPhones browser more user friendly (easier) with the tabls and quickness. That I dont get here but everything else seems better.
Try the Dolphin HD browser, I didn't like the stock browser either, dolphin is really good, with shortcuts and efficient browsing (with tabs). Its free in the appstore.
Will try it out. Thanks.

Try Opera Mobile, it's fricking awesome! I was also disappointed in the stock browser (odd, seeing as how I was coming from the GSII) and Opera Mobile is as if it's inside my head. It works so well! Buttons exactly where you want them, excellent lag-free performance, when you zoom it re-locates perfectly, if you click a link that's too small and it's not sure what you're trying to click, it zooms in right there. It's really great.

This drives me nuts about apple.
Around the world to do some simple task, and people think it's great.
I'm a recent convert to Android from HTC Sense / Winmo 6.5.
I miss Sense and the WM registry but love Android.
Android actually allows you legally to mod your phone.
Why hang with turkeys when you can fly with eagles.
I wish the monitor were Super AMOLED Plus 800x1280.
The clarity is not as crisp as Sensation SLCD (reading text)
and color rendition is not smooth transition (launch XDA developer app and see the ugly orange transition). granted, I disabled Dithering in Sensation (CM7 option).
I'm using Movie mode in Display setting.
Comparing your iPhone 4 and Galaxy Note, which one has a louder external speaker? Which one has a clearer external speaker?

Yeah, same here, but we can't have everything right?
I'm sure Samsung had their reason for doing so and went with PenTile instead of the RGB path.
It's not like they say in an instant, "sure go with that". Research is been done first among many others things before they decide which one to use.

Youtube/streaming Quality is Awful! Help!

Hello! I'm (a) new(b) here...and I recently got this wonderful tablet--it's my first, and I absolutely love the screen. Applications look awesome...and the doodling...yes, the doodling! :good:
Yet I just had to go on youtube (and basically a couple of other streaming video websites...Hulu Plus looks like Block-pocalypse ). The videos, even when set to "HD" buffer quickly, smoothly...but the actual content is, unfortunately different; most of them are blocky, and clarity is lacking. My (retired...it cost around 400$ in its day and has a terrible graphics card) laptop, 5 years old, even looks better and sharper even if the resolution is the same and it's stretched across 15 unforgiving inches (even WHEN set to medium quality it looks better...). On the smaller screen...well, there's a strange pixellation/distortion effect going on around sharper lines, whilst the laptop doesn't have the...quirk. Lol...at least the tablet's speakers are better.
I know I'm being a snob--the quality is somewhat passable...but hey. It's freaky. I noticed the quality gap instantly by simultaneously playing the two devices side by side on the same video. And so I'm a little bewildered. Well, a lot.
So...I might as well ask: is this...normal for tablets to look much worst then bigger-screened laptops with similar resolutions ? I think I remember being impressed last year when I picked up a old Transformer 10.1 model and looked at a Youtube video. The clarity impressed me. Have I been spoiled, or are tablets simply not as able as I thought, or wonder if it has to do with the wi-fi router I have? Well, like I've said, the videos all buffer without lag. :/ If I have to configure something...I don't know where to start!
Disclaimer: I tried for about two hours to look for a solution...but I'm too noobish to even know what to look for. You can e-slap me for being so dumb if you want. Also, this tablet is basically new. It's relatively unaltered. But I have installed adobe flash player. And I made sure to click on the "HD" option on youtube... >.>
Thank you sooooo much for any help. :crying:

You don't need to be rooted. Like it says unless YT is a system app, which I don't think it is

There's a fix on reddit that works in the US. I blocked 206.111.0.0 and 206.111.0.16 at my router since I have multiple devices on my network and I can now play YouTube without constant buffering. Here's the redditt article with the instructions that I followed. http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/13kmvd/have_time_warner_internet_but_can_barely_stream/

Yep id have to agree with ya, Ive had the same issues, blocky video, with some sites, ive compared it to my 5 year old netbook and same thing, also did a quick comparison test with the tf201 prime before returning it, and it definatly didnt have that issue.
Any one else notice pixelation on the hulu website or is this just 2 random events?
Youtube sucks for me too !!!!
Any ideas ?

From my understanding, that APK is only necessary for people who DON'T have the HD option available.
HD options are available on all WiFi only devices, unlike Smartphone devices.
So the Note 10.1 having the HD option, doesn't need this APK.
