I'm dumb and I borked installing a new systemui - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Alright Wtf did I do...I've gone stupid so forgive me.
Tried to rename systemui. Apk to apk.bak and it fc'd systemui of course. Restored my system nandroid backup. Tried to move new systemui into app before renaming old systemui. It overwrote the old one, but I still have a backup of the original. So it rebooted again, but I had the new ui. Everything was fine but the lag was intense, so I cleared cache dalvik and fixed permissions. Reboot again, now when I boot up it takes 5 minutes to load the clock and grant su permissions, then I get repeated toast of fauxclock and fauxsound being granted su probably ten times each.
I restored the original systemui again and re flashed Faux's kernel but no joy.

Odin phone back to stock then do factory reset.

I restored system and data, reflashed kernel, all appears to be well.
I want to know how I borked it. The instructions clearly state to first rename the existing systemui.apk to systemui.apk.bak. I did that, and I knew it would happen but I couldn't stop myself, it started fc'ing. So what did I miss.

I don't think you can exchange or modify the systemui.apk without using ADB to "stop" the phone first. I'm not an ADB specialist but I think there is some information about it in the P-Rom thread in the Development section. Of course, I might be wrong about this.

Next time copy systemui.apk and the systemui.odex (if you are odexed) to your sd card then rename the copies to bak and then copy over thr new one.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app

The problem is renaming to bak causes immediate fc's, so there's no time to copy the new one over. Can you rename a file through adb? That's only way I could see this working.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2

Ive copied my systemui files to the sd and overwritten with no issues.
Use root explorer copy the stock ui fike to sd, then just overwrite the one in the app folder.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app

Word. And does your phone auto reboot after you overwrite?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

No, I manually reboot it, ive done it a few times. I was on stock rooted when I did it tho.

I am on omega now, I just copied systemui to my sd card then copied it back to the system/app folder and overwrote, didnt reboot or fc.

Hmm.. I'm stock rooted except for the kernel. Screwing with systemui in any manner makes my phone angry. I just overwrote my original systemui I made a backup of before trying the new one and it went through and then auto reboot. My wifi is still a little funky. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and Odin to stock/factory reset tomorrow morning after I take the kid to school.
Will Odin clear my recovery or kernel or is that untouched during the process. If om gonna go through with it I might as well go full tilt boogie.
Thanks for the help.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Odin will not wipe, you would need to odin and then do a factory reset from within the os.
Is your firmware and basebsnd matching? Maybe the systemui file is for the mdl version?
Have you done the ota?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app

Systemui was for MDL which is what I'm on. I might as well start totally fresh if I'm gonna do it. Odin to stock and reset to clear everything I've done to the phone and start like I took it out of the box.
Edit: alright whatever... Copied over the new systemui phone auto rebooted but everything is fine so far. Even wifi. What an f'n debacle. Never had so much trouble with a simple mod. Thanks for the help homie.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Whenever changing out system files, it's preferable to use adb shell. Before touching the files, always use the command "stop". This shuts down android, but you still retain the adb shell. It's the perfect opportunity to mess with files like SystemUI or Framework-res.
Also, don't forget to delete applicable .odex files if you're screwing with system apk's.

See that's another point I become lost. I can't delete the odex file because I'm odexed. At least AFAIK. the ui I downloaded was for odexed roms.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Can someone please clarify? I should not delete odex files on an odexed rom, right? I'm going to Google adb commands to learn more about it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Honest OP is honest.

Do not delete the odex file if you are not de odexed

Hey man, I came from a world of flashable zips. Life was easy back then. I had to adb in to unlock my Atrix and that's the extent of my knowledge, and that was two years ago. I love learning. And when something goes wrong I have to know why, not just know how to fix it. I still don't know why renaming systemui to systemui.apk.bak crashed my phone, and it pisses me off.
Anyway, I appreciate the input of everyone involved in my ridiculous post for real.

sorry, im not trying to be a ****; i had an Atrix 4G too, and that was weird compared to WinMo5/6/6.1 stuff back in the days. I really dont know jack about Android anymore; i did with older WinMo HTC devices, and enough to comfortably root, SIM unlock, and flash CM7 on my Atrix 4G and keep the fingerprint scanner working 100%.
However i do know that you should take care switching from deodexed to odexed, and thoroughly read up before you try, and especially post a question before you goof it up. Not trying to be hard on you; i soft bricked many a device; THAT is what i was referring to, really, when i posted. That ive been there, done that, and at least you are being honest about it. Not trying to be a **** or get down on you. I read a lot, and PM for clarification or specialized questions/instructions.
Mistakes are mistakes; we all make them, and these are crazy complicated devices; they are bound to happen. Best of luck!

No harm no foul. I didn't take it harshly, after all I stated it myself in the subject

Can I use the cm10.1 message apk on a stock rooted Nexus 4?

I want to keep my Nexus stock but I really like the text message app from cm. Is there a way to use that one instead of the stock message app? I'm assuming I just have to remove the stock app and then replace it with the cm one right?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yup. Replace and set permissions. Reboot
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Replace it in root explorer.
Yes, just use any file manager with root access and replace it and then give correct permission (rwx-r--r-- I believe)
Also I highly advise you to make a copy of the stock app and place it somewhere in the phone, just in case.
ALSO if you're odexed, this might now work as it also needs odex file and if you are odexed and replaced the app, you might get into the bootloop I think. Never tried it on odexed ROMs, but I think that's what happens

Did you do flash any ROM? If not, you have odexed ROM. Make sure to make a nandroid backup before doing this as I believe you might get into the bootloop.
You can easily get the app by doing that.

No. Before you screw with anything in system, make a backup. If you break something, a simple restore will fix it.
The cm message app is system/app/messaging.apk. Extract it from the cm zip and follow the directions above to install it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You won't go into a boot loop, only thing that will happen is either the Mms.apk won't show up in the launcher or it'll FC. Sometimes, using the newest one from nightlies will cause FC. One has been posted in the apps section that works and has what you're looking for. Its better to use any root explorer app and copy it to /system/apps and fix permissions. And like someone said, make a copy of your original Mms.apk and Mms.odex files to your phone..
Sent from my Nexus 4
If you're just stock rooted, you'll have to go in and re-install the messaging app after every reboot because the stock uses the .odex files to create the mms app, but there is a stock, deodexed, rooted ROM here, and you can just load the CM10.1 MMS into it and it'll work fine. That's what I did
Or you could check out Glowfly on the play store.
It's a pop-up notification app with quick reply support.
Made the same recommendation in a similar thread in the Themes and Apps section. I'm not affiliated with the devs. Just wanted to show support for a good app.
anyone know if this app changes the orienation of your photos from landscape to portrait? This seemed to be a bug on all roms using this apk on my old Galaxy s2.

Nandroid is the backup you make through recovery
Okay. Well i have searched around several times and i can't seem to fine anything that on resizing CMs nav bar.

You can't change it from within CM, but you can flash different mods in recovery (like the one posted above) to change it manually.
Ill be honest if You dont know what a nandroid is you may want to take some time and do some basic research before you end up bricking your phone. Messing with the OS of a device is NOT fool proof. Things can go wrong and then you are stuck with a non working device that you cant return.
Ok just learned what nandroid is and so i guess the next step is to nandroid backup my phone and then flash the mod from the link right?

<dimen name="navigation_bar_height_landscape">38.0dip</dimen>

Anyways this is basically what you have to do(may require some other searching):
-navigate to system/framework and copy the framework-res.apk to your computer
-decompile framework-res.apk
-in the decompiled folder navigate to /res/values/ and open the file named dimens.xml in a text editor
-edit the lines that I posted above to your liking
-recompile framework-res.apk and push it back to the phone. Also make sure the permissions are set to rw-r-r

-Make a nandroid backup just in case
-Download an root file manager. I would recommend root explorer (paid), but there are other free ones like es file explorer.
-Copy the framework-res.apk from your computer to your phone. (just use the usb cable and transfer it over using MTP)
-Open the root file manager and copy the framework-res.apk from where you put it
-Navigate to system/framework and rename the existing framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk.bak
-Paste the new framework-res.apk
-Long press the new framework-res.apk and go to permissions and change them to rw-r-r
-reboot
yep I do that but as soon as I get done renaming framework.apk.bak the phone restarts and goes into boot loop.
I reflash CM10.1 and nandroid backup and everything is fine again. then I tryed just replacing framework but same thing happens.
ohh and mbucks911 the reason why I dont use AOKP is becasue my battery life with AOKP is terrible it causes my phone to run at around 38c which is warm enough to make my hands sweat and my battery drains 10% for every 10mins my screen is on. when I use CM my phone barely gets over 30c and operates around 27c for every and 10% of my battery thats almost 2 hours of sot thats why i am trying to stick with CM.

Not sure what's wrong...

So today I decided to fire up my old continuum and it wouldn't boot. Naturally I went into cwm and tried to restore my old backup. Looks like it didn't want to after it said it was complete I rebooted system and the phone sits on the Samsung splash screen and vibrates.
I pulled the battery and then went back into cwm and wiped data, cache, and dalvik cache. Tried to boot again and it did the same thing.
So I just want to get the phone back up and running. I don't plan on activating it. I just need it to boot to run some apps daily.
I was thinking of ways to do this and I think if I flash the stock 2.2 rom in recovery it might work. Or should I Odin back?
I don't really remember how to use Odin since it's been so long. Nor do I have any of the files on my pc.
Any suggestions on what I should do to get it back up?
Thanks.

I can always check for you and repost files if links are broken and I have still have them. (I can't remember if I wiped that hard drive or not, the laptop was misbehaving and I think I did a clean install). I will try and check tonight. You might want to try reinstalling the base file in CWM depending on which version you are running, I have had some backups go corrupt if I changed the wrong thing...

Well the phone apk is a system file so if its been deleted doing a factor reset won't help. All factory reset does is wipe the data partition where your user apps and settings are stored. Its not like factory reset uses a backup file to restore things.
I assume you are rooted to have done this. You may be able to find the apk from another two rom , extract it, and see if it will install. If not you may have to Odin back to stock to restore it if you want to keep the stock ROM.

Then flash the rom in the created rom slot. Just wanna make sure. Also when I'm charging my phone on hyper drive rom when I turn off my phone and turn it back on it goes back to stock rom and the S'S splash screen doesn't appear upon turning on, doesn't do that when I'm not charging the phone.

There's no way to "fix" the storage. From what I have been told, the system reads it wrong and you only have that much storage for installing apps ( in your case, 1.89GB ). You still have access to the rest of your storage. You can still store pictures, songs, movies, data. Using ES File Explorer, you can see how much space you have left. I was able to successfully download over 3GB of movies on my internal storage despite it saying I had less than 2GB of space left.

What version of Xposed installer do I need, I have Version 2.3.1 installed. I keep getting this message "The app is not activated in the Xposed framework", or you have not rebooted your device. I have rebooted. I'm not sure if I have it activated, but it's showing up in the installer.

Go to Hyperdrive Tweaks, Xposed, Framework Installer, Framework. Check to see if you can Install/Update. You should be in the green with matching numbers for active/bundled.
I suggest removing/editing your post about Blackmart Alpha. Using those kinds of apps are not allowed here and is frowned upon. Plus it's illegal.

No problem. Stupid me
I have a question hope you can help me out. In safe strap in rom slot 1 is my stock rom slot 2 is hyper drive and slot 3 is beans rom. Shouldnt my stock rom be on the right in the stock slot and hyper should be in slot 1 and beans in slot 2? If so i need help on placing the roms in the right place. I have used TWRP for along time on my note 2 but SS is new for me. Sorry if im asking dumb questions. And thank you in advance for any help you provide.

Looks like you didn't install anything on your Stock slot. When you reboot your phone make sure you active the partition that you want that particular ROM in. So for stock, activate stock and install stock backup (you did make a backup right?) and then you can then activate Slot 1 for HD and then Slot 2 for Beans. I would wipe/factory reset the ROM Slots before installing anything on top so you have a clean install.
