[Q] Lost Manual Recovery - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Yes I lost manual recovery. I've tried many many times; with the power off I hold the volume up and the power button at the same time. As soon as I see the "little blue letters" on the left upper corner I let go. I've also tried volume up + home + power... However the cel vibrates again and does a normal system reboot.
I Odin it back to stock, factory reset...same deal.
I can reboot to recovery with Goomanager, but I can't understand why it won't manually.
Any help will be appreciated!
EDIT: Problem solved by scott14719. Here it is: As soon as you feel the phone vibrate, immediately let go of the power button but continue to hold the other buttons until the recovery boots, then let go of them.

You mentioned GooManager so I'm guessing TWRP? Hold the home and vol up buttons just a little bit longer (few seconds) before you let them go.
If nothing else works try to flash OUDHS (CWM). Make sure you read the thread and follow the directions. Of course, anything you do to your phone has risk and it is your responsibility.

thanx...I tried holding the buttons a little longer but it will do a normal launch.
I already tried solving the issue by installing cwm, nice rainbows btw. It installed well but in order to use cwm I had to reboot recovery thru goo...
The manual download works though....

Edit

I have thus problem too. I'm just using goo manager right now.

You really need to wipe and start from scratch.
Odin stock rom, then boot to the rom, do complete device reset. Root, then load the recovery of your choice...15min procedure. Or keep trying things, and waste time. Can do this with my eyes closed as I have done this many times. Good luck.

I am telling you the boot partition is corupt. It has bs from both recoveries. Oh well. Might want to read up on odin and use the partition tools. Major sh$$ happening here. Just throwing ideas at you. I love these challenges. Wish I had the problem. Serious. I maybe wrong.

I'm wondering if there is something going on now. Normally 99.9% of these types of troubles are user error, but I've seen several people now (in the AT&T S4 forums) claiming they can not manually enter into recovery. Now I am assuming CWM hasn't been updated since the auto-loki version and I know it works correctly. So I am wondering (if there is a problem) if the problem might be with a change that was recently made to TWRP or maybe one of the new installation methods that have been developed to install CWM /TWRP? Even the people that are having the same trouble with CWM seem to have had TWRP installed first.
So, people that are having trouble please list the recovery you are using, the version, when it was flashed, and which method you used to flash it.
Or maybe it is still just all user error.

So what recovery are you on now? I have a feeling you might be holding the power button a little to long. As soon as you feel the phone vibrate, immediately let go of the power button but continue to hold the other buttons until the recovery boots, then let go of them. This is from someone that had the same problem as you (from another thread):

So basically, as soon as i see the message "recovery bootin....", i let go the buttons right away.

Have you tried a normal reset while holding volume and home. This is what I do since I am to lazy to take the extra steps and use Goo. Been working on extended power menu for odex'd rom but I am doing something wrong and can't get it to work.
Tapped from the Shear Galaxy Near You!

I used motochopper and running the latest version of twrp. I can boot just fine using goo manager and once I'm in I have no problem at all flashing files or making a back ups. So I believe it may be something wrong with twrp recovery.

When you try to manually boot into recovery are you holding the "power", "volume up", and 'home key' until you first feel the phone vibrate and then immediately release the "power" button but continue to hold the other button until the first splash screen and then let them go. I think a lot of people are holding the power button too long or the other buttons not long enough.

You sir are correct! I just tried it and it works. Kinda feel stupid now. Thank you so much!

seems so complicated... try just volume up.
For mine (ATT 1337, on OUDHS Recovery (cwm))
if your phone is on and while the screen is on, just hold power and select reboot. as soon as it vibrates, press and hold volume up (just volume up, nothing else, maybe wait till custom firmware padlock screen shows up), and wait for the blue text at the top left of the screen... let go vol up.
if for some reason u r frozen. press power (just keep holding) til it forces reboot, then after vibrate (or maybe padlock if its too soon), press n hold just the volume up.

I would restore via KIES instead of using ODIN,
It will reset everything, just like from factory.

I've had this happen to me several times while playing around with flashing. Basically (without fail in my experience), hold power+volume up+home as you'd normally do until you see the booting recovery message and let go. It will do one of two things - boot into recovery- or - restart and vibrate-. If it restarts and vibrates, immediately hold power+volume up+home until the booting recovery message pops up again and let go. It should then boot into recovery and you shouldn't have trouble in subsequent attempts.
It took me a while to figure this out and I actually thought I had permanently bricked my phone as the phone wouldn't boot and I couldn't get into recovery. Hope this helps.

Can't get to recovery image [Android with warning sign appears]

Hi everybody,
This is my first post here and I seriously hope someone can help me.
I unlocked my phone and was attempting to root it and flash Cyanogen's MOD. I flashed Armon_RA's recovery image into recovery partition using fastboot, but when I try to access it I'm getting an image of an android with a warning sign, which I can't post yet because I'm a newbie and mod's have to check my account... Once there the only thing I can do is remove the battery.
I've downloaded Armon_RA's img twice and from different sources and the same thing happens.
In terms of what I did, I tried to follow a step-by-step guide at androidandme.com, combined with Cyanogen's official Wiki.
I appreciate any kind of help,
Thanks!
BTW I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, in case it helps.
Took me like 4 times to flash the recovery before I got the care bear screen. Just keep flashing!
I just got it working right now and was about to post it had been fixed.
Thanks anyway!
Sorry for undigging this thread, but this thread is the first one which shows up when I searched for "android recovery warning".
I have spent the entire day trying to fix my Nexus One's recovery (I got stuck on the screen with a warning sign as well), with no success. Trust me, I tried (almost) everything possible to flash a new recovery/restore stock recovery.
What did work, though, was running fastboot flash recovery recovery.img 5 times in a row (remember to boot your phone in fastboot mode before sending these commands). That did the trick, and now I'm able to boot in recovery mode (Clockworkmod, by the way).
Thanks!

So how can I do a hard reset from this stock recovery when there's no menu commands, how do you use the stock recovery?
I have an unrooted S On nexus one that I need to hard reset because it boot loops for some reason, but didn't want to have to root it.

Push the power button and volume up buttons at the same time

Two buttons together ...
It is a common misconception that you have to push two buttons at the same time to activate some features. Trying to push them at exactly the same time is hit and miss and causes people to have issues.
In every case the combination is always hold one button down and then click the other button once ... much easier than clicking both together.
In this case I believe the combo is hold down power and then click Volume-Up once. (I may have it reversed).

It most likely is reversed. At least when you want to access the bootloader you want to hold down the volume down button (or maybe it is either volume button) and then turn on the phone. And with fastboot, you hold down the trackball as you turn on the phone.
I believe the volume up and powerbutton at the same was to "ok" the phone to apply an update.zip that was stored on the card (I remember doing that when I was running the Froyo build leaks from google).

OzCDN is correct, it is: hold down the power button and press volume up (the reverse does not work), but pushing them both together still works

In Developer options, enable the Advanced Reboot.
The 3 button combo will work, it's just a matter of timing. Remove and replace the battery, hold vol up + home, then power, holding all three, and when it vibrates, let go of power only.
You could also hook up in USB Debugging mode and issue the command:
adb reboot recovery
And if you don't have a developer option go into about phone and tap build number 7 times.

Some people, including myself, cannot get it to work with the standard procedure...the solution is to basically do it twice. Here's a copy/paste of the instructions:
Long press the power button and choose "power off". Give your phone a few seconds to turn off completely. Once it's off, press and hold these 3 buttons at the same time: POWER+VOLUME UP+HOME. Look at the top left of the screen - as soon as you see little blue text saying entering recovery, let go of all buttons immediately...but be ready...if your phone vibrates (it might be trying to reboot normally again), press and hold those same buttons again until you see the blue text again...then let go immediately. Now you will see your recovery!

CWM recovery only requires you to push the volume up key and then press the power key until the phone vibrates and then let go of the power button only. When the blue lettering appears, let go of the volume up. The home button should only be required with TWRP.

Whatever the reason, that is not the case with my phone and many others. I've read several threads of people having the same issue. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the OUDHS CWM w/ auto-loki or what.
I've never heard of letting go of the power button only while still pressing volume up, but I gave it a try just to see...it did get me into CWM recovery but only after doing it twice, similar to the method I wrote above.
I have tried letting go of both volume up and power (no pressing home at all) and never found a way to get into recovery.
Anyways, it seems there's no harm in pressing the home button either way and it's probably easier than letting go of the power button and still holding volume up...and easier to explain too lol.

Can you get the blue text in the upper left corner of the screen to appear at any time?
In my case, trying to get into recovery via the 3 buttons is a matter of very precise timing if I try pressing all 3 buttons at the same time. The instant I see the blue text I let go of everything and it works. Hold it for even a fraction of a second longer and the blue disappears and it goes into a normal boot. It works much better if I press Vol Up, then add Power, then add Home. I'm doing that sequence fairly quickly but the point is I'm not trying to press 3 buttons at the exact same time.
But I'm using CWM so I don't need the 3rd button...
From a powered-down state I hold Vol Up then Power and hold both through the vibration until the blue text appears and it goes into CWM recovery just fine. There seems to be a bit more leeway in terms of how fast you need to let go this way although I just tested and holding about a half second too long caused it to bounce out of recovery and do a normal boot. Let go immediately when you see the blue.
Phone won't boot..
So after using CASUAL, my phone rebooted, and got stuck on the splash screen with RECOVERY BOOTING.. in the top left corner. I pull the battery, try to do a normal reboot; takes me to the same screen. Trying the 3 button combo for recovery; same thing. Any suggestions?? I am NOT on MF3 Firmware.

Restore Factory Recovery AKA Remove Custom Recovery

Hi guys,
First, thanks in advance for your help. I have a question or clarification. I did try numerous Google searches as well as searches in these forums and I could not find a clear answer. The question is as follows.
How do I get rid of the custom recovery and go back to the factory recovery?
I found an article and completed all steps with the exception of “locking” the boot loader. When I press the power button and volume button, I still get the TWRP Recovery. Would locking the boot loader disable the TWRP custom recovery and revert to the factory recovery? A couple times I got the little Android guy with the exclamation point.
I apologize for the newb question. It just was not clear in the article and I could not find any information online. If this is not the way, can someone direct me to an article or let me know what I may have done wrong?
Try looking at this thread, it has lots of good info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2379797

Okay, I am not beyond making a real dumb mistake so please bear with me. I did look over the link. I ended up flashing the stock recovery and it does not appear to work. Well unless I am confused.
I restart my Nexus by pressing the Power Button and Volume down button at the same time. I then select "Recovery" from the menu. I see the text Google flash and then I am greeted with the Android guy on the floor with the exclamation point. Is this normal? Maybe I just dont know how the stock recovery looks?

Thank you, that makes sense then. I cannot believe it was something so dumb. I have been messing with this for hours. I did try pressing the Volume up or down button a few times and nothing happened though. Weird.

Don't immediately press them at the same time. Do it in the sequence listed.

[Q] Help please, can only get to TWRP

I have the D800. I rooted and flashed TWRP. I then tried to flash a rom. Everything was fine but when it reboot the only thing that came up is the LG logo and then the screen goes black.
So when I hold down the power button and the volume down button a couple of times, the factory reset comes on. If i tried to reset, it'll let me into the TWRP. BUT I have no useable rom downloaded.
AND when I tried to plug my phone into my laptop, I get a ton of drives that windows asks me to format. I tried to hold the volume up button to get into download mode but no dice.
My theory is if I could somehow put a new rom into the phone, I could then flash that?
So help please?

So help please?

the first question I am going to ask you is did you have the common sense to make a backup before trying to flash a new rom. If you did not do this there is a way to fix it
Nope, my big mistake is forgetting to have something else besides the new rom.
So no way at all? Man that really bites.

Ok give me a second.. I'm going to find you a link to flash stock ROM back on using download mode..I'm sure you just aren't doing it right because I did the same thing and it went into download mode no problem.. Make sure your phone is off.. Go to twrp power off setting.. After phone is off hold volume up and plug into computer... Gimmie a min and I'll find that link for the tools

How exactly are you trying to get into download mode? You have to be quick when doing it. It's the power and vol + key. When plugging in your phone to the computer make sure you quickly press and hold vol + and power key. It took me numerous tries to get it done but it worked eventually. Also, do you have all the correct drivers installed for your G2?

Thank you! I've been holding down only the volume + key. But got it on the second try with the power + volume. Fixed now!
Glad to hear this worked.

Phone wont turn on help!!!!!!

So i tried to flash my rom (aeon v3) using twrp. So i put the zip on my phone and i tried to install, it said it was successful, i wiped all the necessary stuff as well then i did reboot system, and now my phone is useless. It wont really turn on, when i press the power button i have to hold it for the screen to even turn on and it does for literally a second to the LG symbol, and turns back off, the screen is somewhat on...i can see the backlighting but its very dim and theres nothing on the screen, what happened? i followed all the procedures it looked to be going well now i cant even use my phone, and i tried pressing the power and volume down but that only brings up the lg symbol for a sec then turns back off...and my phone was 90% charged when i did this. please can anyone help me??? My phone is useless now...i need my phone to work!!! Does anyone on here know how to fix this, has this ever happened to anyone??? Please provide any help if you can its all appreciated!!!

Be sure to turn of the phone completly by holding the power button untill it starts to reboot. You will see the lg logo for a short while. After that do the volume down + power button. When you see the lg logo let go and press (and hold) volume down and power button again. Now you should be prompt to press the power button three times to reset the phone. This will take you to the recovery and let you restor your backup if you have made one.
Hope this will help you.
I ran into this same problem not too long ago. The best way to get your phone back working is trying to get into download mode and reflashing pure stock.
Just hold down the power button, even when it tries to boot up. Keep holding after the second vibration where it tries to boot up again. Then, if the screen stays black, your phone is fully off.
Then follow the instructions on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
I had the exact problem and I installed LGMobile Support Tool. It will flash stock recovery + stock system. Once the program complete you'll need to hold the volume down + power button. When you see the lg logo let go and press (and hold) volume down and power button again. Now you should be prompt to press the power button three times to reset the phone. Then will start up CWM recovery and will return you to stock.

Hmm i did the button procedure, and took me to twrp i installed recovery but now it says i only have 11gb of internal storage, compared to 19 i had before. I saw that people who used the lg launcher to install recovery to their phone in download mode had the same issue. Have you expereinced this? Does it really mean i only have 11gb? Mine was the 32gb version

Most likely your phone has the D80010o firmware, downgrade to D80010d and you shouldn't have that issue you've described in the OP.
When downgrading, follow the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
