[Q] Top phones!!! Read! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If this question isn't in the right thread please redirect!!!
Obviously I'm a noob. I just need a few people to help me find the perfect phone. Between these 4:
Lg Optimus G pro
Sony Xperia Z
Samsung Galaxy S4
HTC One
I have T-Mobile or else I would have a rather larger amount of options.
I'm more of a media type person, but I use my phone to browse the web, shop online, listen to music, and Use Google Now to get directions and such
The reason why I put my question in the Nexus 4 thread is because I HAVE A NEXUS 4. I would like to know if I should just keep it or buy one of those phones above! Please help!

I'm biased towards Nexus devices :good::highfive:

And no one is going to pick a phone for you.. Just because you proclaim yourself a noob isn't stopping you from doing your own research.

They are all the same.

So you would be buying these phone off-contract? Or are they subsidized? I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with the new T-Mobile.

I have already done my research. I just want you to tell me the best 3 . the reason why I am asking is because I can't figure out the best one for the price.

Sony, LG, HTC (best to worst in that order). Seriously, don't go with Samsung.

Too much hate on the Samsungs. In my opinion get the Galaxy Note II or wait for the Note III. If not get the Galaxy SIV. The features included in it are amazing and also if they are all going AOSP then what does it matter. New TouchWiz is great. Also are you looking at the Samsung Galaxy SIV GTI9505 or GTI9500
It will be very biased here.
I say Samsung Galaxy SIV is first choice, then HTC One tied with Xperia Z. Both were great phones.
I havent tried the LG but they never update their phones. But its you call at the end

If I had money to throw away I will go for the HTC one. I am assuming you have really high income to be considering moving from a nexus 4 to get any of those.
Just watch this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3uFFNNBhMc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
(HTC one is ~= SGS4 in performance)
Nexus 4 is a TOP phone performance wise...
So the question is: is it worth spending ~600$ for build quality, better screen, better speakers and better camera?
It's not for me.

What features? You mean gimmicks.. Most people who buy the S4 just want to showoff and don't really use their phones features.and how can you say touch wiz is great its froyo-ish and lags all the time with the S4 and eats up to much space on the S4 storage

Here's my super biased opinion.
HTC One (because i've tried one yesterday, pretty good quality and it flies!)
Sony Xperia Z (because I used to love sony. Tried the phone, not much of a difference compared to the N4)
LG Optimus G Pro (because well.. We're using LG now aren't we? Not sure how their non-aosp devices would stand tho.)
Samsung Galaxy S4 (because it lags like a grand mother and i hate samsung for adding galaxy to the galaxy nexus and for their ****ty build quality.)

If nexus 4 is a boring smartphone, I'm Santa Claus.
If you try to learn something here on xda instead of change devices it's better. No one want to be a noob for ever.
Inviato dal mio Nexus 4 con Tapatalk 2

Choose a phone based upon what you will use it for. Games, internet, movies, texting and calls? A smaller device might be suitable for you if you only plan on using it for texting/calls or a device like the s4 for movies/gaming.
The nexus 4 is a great device, decent screen size, amazing performance... even on stock.

your list doesn't even have nexus listed in it. I wonder why you posted this question here!

I'd say stick with the Nexus but if you're adamant about switching then
1. HTC One - unrivalled build quality, great performance, Sense is actually quite nice here, overall a great phone
2. GS4 - awful build quality and fugly TouchWiz but lots of development on XDA and outstanding hardware specs
3. Xperia Z - decent specs and great build quality/feel in hand (not to mention waterproof) but poor viewing angles on the display and if you're going to dish out money on a new phone you may as well get one with next-generation hardware rather than the XZ which is between the two generations
4. LGOG Pro - screen is too large IMO, cheap feel to the device and, being an LG, there's little chance of you getting updates and there's not too much development

We already have a phone comparing other phones.

Wanna move on but to what!

Hello guys!
Its been a real pleasure being with Nexus S
Its a great cell phone, I love it but now I am at point where I have to change my cell phone, now I wanna buy a LG Nexus 4 but it has not come in my country yet and i dont know when would it come..
So that and the price factor gives me a choice to have either Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S II (Yes 2 not 3 )
now in my head i dont need fast updates because i always use a custom rom and i am ok with even a lower one,
I have used GB in nexus s even though i tasted JB
So the updates are not a problem for me, I just want a cell phone that can last me at least a year with a nice play for the upcoming games or anything else like that.
What would you advise me to buy? GSII or GNex?
If some other with the same specs or better but with same price factor then kindly let me know..
Can't go wrong with either. If you care about roms then the gnex would be the best since it will get the major android updates til the software is to much for the hardware.

+1.
Seriously, choosing between the GNex and the S2? That's not fair because the S2 was released by Samsung to steal market from the Nexus S after releasing the latter. (IMHO, the S2 is just a Nexus S on steroids). Now if you are choosing between the GNex and the S3, that would be a better comparison, the S3 is better in hardware but would take 10 years to get an update compared to the Gnex, but like you said, if you're happy with ROMs like CM or AOKP, then it would probably matter less.
Sent using the xda mobile app
GNex.
GNex would probably be a better choice. It's a pretty great phone.
There will only be one upgrade for me and that will be the s3.
I love the Nexus brand but a Wolfson DAC is a must for me in any new phone.
I'm happy now with my NS. But in a few years I will get the s3.

The SGSII and the GNex are extremely similar. The GNex has a slightly lower pixel density on the camera, but a little larger screen.
If you're in love with AOSP roms, the GNex will be the way to go. If you just want another phone and have the money to blow on a good SD and such, then go SGSII.
I contacted one of the market dealer today and he said that in a few weeks they would have LG Nexus 4
If that comes then i would go for it else I would buy Gnex then
Thanks all for help

going to buy in two days note2 or nexus 4?

I just wants to ask nexus 4 user is this set worth its money,or i go fo note 2.?plz reply
I vote for the Nexus. Stock Android is just too good to give up.
Nexus 4's totally worth the money
You're asking for biased posts. If i walked into a samsung store and asked for help from one of their employees.
Hey, I need help deciding what phone to get. Should I get the note 2 or a nexus 4? Nexus is made by their competitor, LG. Obviously he's going to tell you note.
Get what you want. It's really your decision, I don't think any of are looking to beg you to buy the phone. Regardless, you'd be happy with either phones. Android is android.
Spec wise, they're both relatively close, Nexus will always have the latest version. Size screen and development are your only considerations.

i bought both of them..simple

Both great devices and is for two different persons. The choice varies from person to person and no one can choose one for you. But if you ask this on nexus forum, of course people will vote for nexus because we obviously preferred nexus over note. If you ask same question on note forum, people will choose note.
You want stock android, easy rooting, fast, and nice cheap smartphone? Nexus is the way to go
You want giant screen, s pen, also fast, phablet? Go with note.

definitely get a note 2. my sister has it and the battery life is just amazing. GPS is also way faster than nexus 4. in the end it's up to you though. i didn't feel much of a difference between stock android 4.2 vs samsung touch wiz on the note 2. IMO, the samsung additions are even better than stock android. they have some nice interfaces. my advice is to try both for yourself and see what YOU LIKE. otherwise you'll just be listening to people and when you get either one yourself based on people's opinions, you might be disappointed.

Should I sell my N4 for the Galaxy S4?

Been playing with my Nexus 4 since a few weeks now but the Galaxy S4 is looking very tempting, especially the display. Should I sell my N4 now and save the moolah to purchase the Galaxy S4?
I don't think I would be getting a better value later on. How many of you are planning to sell off the N4 for the samsung galaxy S4?

i will be selling N4 for S4 need LTE
Won't sell my Nexus 4 until I get my Nexus 5
I had an S3, and I've not totally given up on Samsung after all the fuss over sources for developers etc, not what I like to see. Very happy still with my Nexus 4, nothing to make me consider an 'upgrade' (and I normally always demand the latest and greatest).
As for your first question, it's really entirely down to opinion. If you don't want any of the newer hardware on the GS4 (i.e. 1080p screen, octa-core processor, 13MP camera etc.) then don't bother. I personally don't see it as worth it at all. I would never be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p screens, I can't conceive of any task in the foreseeable future which the S4 Pro won't be able to handle, I don't use my camera too much and I don't need the expandable storage. Your opinion may well differ, and at the end of the day you definitely won't be able to get a definitive answer to this as it's all down to opinion.
As for the second question, there's already a thread in the Q&A about this (in which the vast majority of people answered no).
The only way id sell my n4 is to maybe get a n5. The s4 didnt really impress me an all of its new features seem gimmicky
No
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yes.
Why, so someone that wants and will enjoy the n4 will get it, and then you can get and use what you want as well..
I'm thinking I'll eventually sell mine to get an xphone, maybe.. For the meanwhile I'm enjoying it
hopefully n5 will be better so no..who the hell likes touchwiz anyways
All these new phones could make your tea and replace your loved one in the bedroom for all i care they are all more than double the price so they can shove them where the sun doesn't shine.
*IF* the S4 is easy to develop for (probably not), then I would. The Nexus is only great in terms of development support. As a hardware platform, it's just meh....
- Horrible battery life compared to competing phones
- Screen not calibrated
- No LTE
- No SD card
- Only 16gb

Just remember your N4 will get the next version of Android and the features that will bring, your S4? Well you may have to wait a while to get version 5 of Android! Sure the S4 may have better specs but software is just as important as hardware!

1. Battery has been great for me, better than sensation and mt4g.
2. Can be done with apps, I tuned mine based off of an oled, love the screen now
3. It does, users are using lte now
4. This was known prior to release
5. Also previously known prior to release
Expandable storage would make nexus an unfair competing device, Google must still cooperate with other manufacturers...

personally i think that the SGS4 is a great phone BUT I don't see any reason for us (the moderate users) to take a leap for it and thats why:
the nexus 4 is amazingly fast, battery is just fine and if u need more than that get a portable charger, PURE android and fast updates so u don't get tied to the manufacturer's good will, I don't like the Super AMOLED display to my eyes the colors are too saturated but that doesnt mean they are not good.
i've bought the nexus after having 4 HTC devices and i must say pure android device is an another league, the custom UI is just slowing it down.
and so about the Exynos 5 Octa
this is NOT a real Octa core. this processor packs tow quad cores
4-cortex A7 @1.6ghz for power 'saving'
4-cortex A15 @ 1.2ghz for performance.
i dont believe in this concept but maybe it's just me.....
so i dont see reason to buy the sgs4 while u can enjoy the nexus 4.
just my opinion.....

I'm more tempted to the HTC One but Nexus 5 rumors are 1337
Never ever !
I had the S3 before, i gave it to my son and enjoy the N4 now.
I love bug-free custom ROMs, you will never have this on a Samsung product.

- Go ahead and try different roms an kernels, you can double your screen on time with the right combination.
- Go ahead and try different kernels, as an example, the recomended values that comes with franco will blow your mind away.
- Well you have a point there, me personally don't need that LTE speed.
4,5 - Well, I don't really understand why people needs more than 16gb in a phone, is your phone a cinema theater or something that has tons of movies to store or what?
First nexus phone for me after an S2 and an S3. I'm never moving to any other device unless it's the next nexus. Nuff said.

The CM team debunked that.
https://plus.google.com/117962666888533781522/posts/7jywLJdswki
Setting Device Expectations
Let’s start with the simplest form of this: CyanogenMod does not pre-announce support or lack of support for devices. Ever. Even for the Nexus 4, we did not announce support until a nightly build was available. Further, any announcement regarding the ‘dropping’ of device support will be communicated via this Google+ page, Twitter, Facebook, our blog, or a combination of those; it will not be something buried in a forum post.
This morning, a comment from a CM collaborator on XDA was taken to be as an ‘absolute’ in regards to support of the S4. He offered the opinion of four TeamHacksung maintainers, their frustrations and lack of interest in supporting the S4. What’s seemingly lost on those reading this is that his comments as an individual do not speak for CyanogenMod as an organization.
As for the team’s stance on the S4, there isn’t one at this time, and most definitely won’t be one before the device is sold at retail.

I should add that whether you sell your Nexus 4 to buy an S4 is completely up to you. That is an extremely personal decision, and only the OP can decide that. Anything else is just everyone else's personal opinion, and is usually going to go between people who actually use and love the Nexus 4 (or Nexus in general), and those who don't but post here anyway. Being as this is the Nexus 4 board, I would think the question is most likely going to be slanted in one direction.

[Q] Need some advice... HTC One vs Nexus 4... (jumping ship from iOS)

To make a long story short, I'm trying Android for the first time after being a diehard Apple user... (I'm currently on the iPhone 5)
Anyways, I was looking at the following three phones:
Nexus 4
HTC One
Galaxy S4
I jumped the gun and ordered the Nexus 4 but then I realized that the 16 GB model I ordered didn't have any SD storage so I have to fit ALL my music and videos (video podcasts) into the small 16 GB space. I'm also losing LTE support but I can deal with that.
My Nexus 4 is coming tomorrow and I was told to refuse delivery to send it back and get a refund.
In the meantime I ordered the HTC One developer edition for the unlocked bootloader (seems important for rooting, flashing alternate ROMs), but now I read that alternate ROMs often lose hardware features like camera post-processing, image stabilization (?), etc.
Now I'm still undecided because I didn't realize that flashing custom ROMs would lose features like that...
I do really like the idea of stock Android (and the very latest updates) but the higher resolution, and more importantly bigger storage, of the HTC One is making me think I should go that route.
Can anybody give me any advice?
EDIT: I also forgot that the Nexus 4 has a much smaller screen size due to the LCD buttons taking up much of the screen realestate...
As far as your media goes do you use Google Play at all? You can at least have all of your music uploaded into the Google Play cloud and not worry about installing it on your phone. Just a thought.
Yes you are in quite a pickle. The problem is that there are too many different android devices out there which shine in their own way but that can be a good thing. Anyway personally I'd go with the galaxy s4-brilliant specs and an sd card slot, I was going with the nexus 4 but I am a hardcore gamer so that was out of the picture. Also I'm not fond of htc's . The galaxy s4 will have brilliant and lots of developers for roms, kernels ect and I would advise you to get it.

Don't listen to him the one or the nexus 4 will do you good just use cloud storage. And a custom ROM will remove those in screen buttons.

Seeing I just ordered my Nexus 4 today I would advice that. It offers pure Android, so no Touchwiz.
But if you can afford it I would suggest the HTC One. That phone is damn sexy

Being a fan of both iOS and Android platforms, both have compelling feature sets. That said, there are many exquisite handsets for Android lately. The Nexus 4 has been out for a while now and we should start seeing leaks for the Nexus 5. And my current personal favorite is the HTC One. My Nexus 4 tragically met it's demise on a tile floor at Subway earlier this week and rather than go from 4s to 5 or replace my Nexus 4 I'm going to give the HTC a try (only thing left to confirm is the level of NFC support... SE included or not for Google Wallet). I would see which handsets meets your needs then go for that one. Also FWIW, until Apple comes out with a bigger screen, not just taller, I'm not going to upgrade my iOS. The HTC device also seems a bit sturdier than the Nexus 4 with it's aluminum back. As for the samsung offerings... personally I don't like them. I had a Google Nexus and was completely unhappy with the AMOLED screen and cheap plastic chassis. Just my 2¢.
I would get the HTC one !

HTC One is nice, until you realize you can't even service the battery without destroying the phone.
Most people end up selling their phones before they need to replace the battery. Phone batteries nowadays last at least 4-5 years if not more.

I wager development on the N4 will be alive & well long after people have moved on from S4 or HTC One--just look at the GNex's lifespan of relevance. If you're looking for a solid, dev-friendly phone to last a while go with an N4.
And maybe a case, depending. Now if you're not a cheap-ass & feel adventurous to boot get the S4 as well when it comes out. Who says you have to choose
You wont loose lte just flash .33 radio or the other old ones.

If key lime pie was not coming in may, then i would have got the s4. But since key lime pie is coming in may, it means that nexus 4 will get it right away, while htc and samsung will wait at least six months.
I've used plenty of sense phones, HTC makes great hardware but stock android > sense.
Coming from iOS the N4 is an easy transition, only two things that are really different are widgets (you don't have to use these) and the app drawer so you will be able to pick it up just fine.
I bet you're going to hate the android OS since you only used iOS. Try it before you buy, but it seems you already made that mistake and you blindly bought a Nexus.

[Q] Replacing my Nexus S. Need help to deicide!

Guys i need a little help. I am replacing my lovely nexus s.
My candidates are
Nexus 4
Galaxy S4
HTC ONE
Galaxy S3
Today i tried an S3 and a HTC ONE and an S4 (i9505) and a n4.
I love the S4 the design i think is much better than the s3, but the ONE has the best design, but i never buy a phone just 4 the design. And it is impossible to replace anything on the HTC One. The camera is not so good either, but the microphone and the stabilization is realy an useful extra. And HTC is never too good on updating its software. N4 is is a good all rounder, but the camera is crap The screen was insanely nice in the s4. My problem is that the s4 browser lagged like hell, i loaded up the verge desktop as my usual test page and during loading it was all choppy and unresponsive even the s3 was much faster! Not to menion my nexus 7 almost my dated nexus s was more responsive.... Maybe the demo phone does not had the final software? Can somone with a stock i9505 can try theverge? Please tell me how the browser behaves on a final s4? thx
I'd suggest you go with the s4. The lag was due to firmware not being ready. Chances are the model you will buy will probably not lag. And even if it does it will be fixed with an update. The s4 has the best hardware around right now, no doubt about that. The htc one is also a great phone and you won't regret buying either of them. I wouldn't buy the nexus 4 or s3 though.

S3 would be only because of price but i dont realy like compromise What you have against the nexus? Do you have the s4?
You may want to ask this in a general section and not in any sub forum as you will get biased replies to whichever forum you ask in. If you have decided to ask here it sounds like you are leaning towards the S4. The One at the moment sounds like the smoothest but if you want/need an external battery and SD slot you should probably go for the S4. The Ones camera isnt bad, its not as good as the S4 in daylight but better in low light. I'd go into a store again then compare the One & S4 to see which one you really like.

No doubt Nexus 4 is a nice phone. But it is 6 month old tech at this point. You will love the S4 coming from Nexus S, unless you absolutely hate touchwiz...

Thats a good point, if you like stock android you do not want a S4 unless you want to wait and see about this whole bootloader mess and get cyanogen.

I imagine what is in the store is final retail. I have never seen any device in store running pre-release hardware or firmware. What you see is what you get.
You'll get different views.
If software is important I'd recommend the nexus 4 as you'll get key lime pie before any Samsung or HTC device. It's not bloated with features, it's simple stock Android fast and functional.

Then i will go to another store and try it as if the s4 would behave that much slower as the s3 i would expect lots of people complaining
Only options in my eyes would be the S4 or the One. I have had both, the One first but I had to switch to the S4 as every single unit I found had stuck pixels among other faults. Aside from that it is a great phone, but if you do consider one then make sure you get a good one before you leave the shop!
Alternatively, absolutely no regrets going to the S4 instead.

The camera on the one is a fair bit better in the 1.29 update, check out some comparison reviews. Also, in terms of software updates, I read a piece somewhere that showed pretty categorically that HTC have the best history of updates.

Well lack of expandable storage along with the maximum option being a 16 gb version is the dealbreaker. I have a 16 gb s3 + 32 gb micro sd and I tend to fill that up with music and movies so I wouldn't be able to survive on just 16 gb. Theres also the battery life which doesn't seem to be that great along with it being non removable though I could probably live with it if it was only just that. I don't have the s4 right now. Still trying to decide between the s4 and one...

I have seen that too and HTC is realy better in updating non flagship devices for example the galaxy w does not even get updated from 2.3, but s2 the former flagship got 4.1.2 and wil get 4.2.2 and the HTC sensation remained on 4.0.4. But if someone replaces phone every year that does not realy matter
