[Q] Which of the kernel is best for extending S4 battery time - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got new S4 in black and i am loving it. I really feel for the first time that iphone has a real competition now, as the user experienced is very much improved.
Any how we all know S4 is the best, but it is very bad with battery time. I previously had a note2 device you and it usually last more than 2 days on my average use (despite of its much bigger screen size). To make S4 last longer i have turned off every extra feature (i.e air view, smart scroll and all such stuff) but still battery is draining very fast. So this is what i wanted to know...
WHICH IS THE BEST KERNEL THAT CAN HELP IN BOOSTING THE BATTERY TIME OF S4?
when i had a S2 i used Siyah, and it almost doubled my battery time, 2 days even with data on. It was crazy. I am expecting something similar. Please guide me.
And thank you all in advance

what version do you have 505 or 500

!Houston, S4 have a big problem!!

Hey guys, really, even though we try to justify it and show good performance of the battery of our new machine, the truth is that the S4 is very disappointing. The advertised battery with a very good performance and duration of up to two days, but the truth is that in reality do the same things I did with my S2 and S3, the duration is shorter. Roms developers have struggled to reduce consumption, but remain excessive and reheated, not because of them but this time Samsung blew it with the battery, as it did at the time with the first version of the Galaxy S. was a great revolutionary cell, but the battery was not the same level.
What to do about this? complain all, writing in the forums, on the website of Samsung, on Twitter and on all networks require Samsung to correct and improve performance or improve and launch a new battery. Or will we wait for the release and change of cell and paid so much for him to only have four hours of screen use? I leave it to your consideration.
forgive the long and the English with a translator, but it's crazy not to use it how and when I want x fear of running out of battery.

well before you complain, test first.. I have an S3, I ha a note 2, and now S4.. I can safely say the battery longevity with my usage is in between S3 and Note 2... so it is actually good... bearing in mind I only had the S4 for 2 days and the battery hasn't reached its full potential.
On my old S2 I was able to get about 2 hours of screen use. S4 give me roughly 4-5 hours, so yes dear OP very disappointing. Maybe two weeks of constant use would make You satisfied? I think that it can be easily achieved by Samsung - by using car battery.

International Galaxy S5 Battery Life

Hey guys
I have a brand new GS5 and the batterylife is nowhere close to what reviews say. Yes I get 20+ hours but that is only counting in all the hours I am asleep.
When taking it off the charger and just browsing the web on autobrightness inside in just under a hour the battery is at 79 percent while on wifi...
Also Android system is what consumes the most. How can I fix this ? I don't want to root it yet but if I must do that that's fine for me.
Also while sleeping the battery loses 12 percent in just 6 hours. This can't be right ?

bear in mind battery technology hasnt advanced quite as far as screens and connectivity has. we have bigger screens and constant connected wifi and apps.
you're not going to get all the battery life you want. under mdium use id say this phone is about 12 hours use
Yes I know that buy it is worse than my s4 and even moto g. It can't be right. I've owned the one M8 and it should more or less like that phone but it is not by FAR. I wish I didn't break my z2, that phone couldn't be sucked dry in one day.
All this aside : if Android kernel and system is using the most energy something must be wrong

ok let me ask you this then instead
how much battery life do you want from a device that has a 1080p screen, wifi, 4g and a cpu thats higher than a P4 desktop?

Let me say you this: that's not the point. Don't try to defend samsung because you like them.
To the point: this is one of their flagship devices and I know that normally it should last a lot longer than it does now. And to answer your question it should last almost as long as the one M8 wich has near identical hardware but a less big battery.
My xperia z2 with the same chip but an even bigger display that is brighter lasted at least 22 hours with 7 hours screen on time. Yes it had a 400mAh bigger battery but that doesn't mean that there should be such a big differencr in things like browsing the web. A 1 to 1,5 hour difference yes maybe. That being said I clearly have problems with my battery draining while I'm asleep.
I have owned two s801 devices and I know it is a really power effecient chip so it is not normal that I lose 30 percent after 1 hour on really low brightness. The fact that android system and kernel is at the top of the power consumption chart is also an inidcation that there is something wrong with the firmware. I tought someone could help me that has had the same problem by suggesting for example debloating the rom, installing a certain kernel, disabling a certain samsung app and so on.
So if you have nothing better so say please may I ask you to not respond so that this thread can be maybe somewhat usefull to other users
Root, takes of all. Touchwiz craps and change a kernel you get more battery life.

Any recomendations for a stable one for touchwizz ?

Terrible battery life.

Hey everyone. Without further a do, I am saying that my N4 battery suuuuucks really bad. Started on stock rom, flashed Chroma w/ latest franco kernel. Nope. Still lots of drain (slightly better overall, but nothibg major). Then flashed hells doctor kernel. Nope. Lots of drain when screen is on, but stable with screen off.
Honestly, I've seen people getting 6h on screen time. And everyone says that these kernels and rom can increase battery life by a margin, while mine stays the same.
Oh and there is a thing. Ive recently broke my stock charger and now using apple's ipad charger. Mine was 1.2 A and the one from apple is 1 A. Is this is an issue we are looking for?
Or its just a 2years old battery running out of its life cycles...?
Thank you!

Nexus 4 battere sucks really no matter what you plus your network coverage may impact vastly on performance. Anyway given the battery is 2 years old, I would say it's gone even if it says it's good but again it depends on your usage like continuous tethering or other heavy activity that makes the phone run hot

Well my usage can be heavy surfing on FB, Instagram and definetely FB messenger. I often use chrome and mainly everything is done under Wifi.
According to my screenshots, you cannclearly see that shes (battery) is ok when screen is off, no drain and etc. As soon I start using it it drains A LOT. Almost 90° angle on diagram It's crazy.
Plot twist: To prevent spam on the XDA forums, ALL new users prevented from posting outside links in their messages.
Yes, i have a new battery which was working well, but I flashed factory image 5.1.1 xxx47v and the batt life is really horrible now.
It's easy to replace the battery, I recommend taking out the sim card tray before taking the back off though.
I haven't been on here for a long time, whats the best rom, for batt life. I'm willing to go back to kit kat if I have to .
Also note that some of the screenshots with 6+ hours of SOT the user has handicapped their devices (disable 2 cores, lower max cpu/gpu frequency, etc).

Yes, I've seen people underlocking, undervolting etc. But that's not what I am planning to do with mine N4. Neither I'm hoping to have 6 hours SOT. 4 would be SUPER COOL. And that seems impossible for my device

Thinking about purchasing but worried about battery... your opinions?

I am considering purchasing a moto x pure edition because it can move to any carrier. This is the main reason I was considering this phone. The second and equally important reason is battery life. My current phone is a galaxy s4 active. The battery doesn't get me through the day at work (10 hours) with moderate use (4 hours screen time). This has annoyed me greatly. Unfortunately, I cannot have it charging at work so the phone needs to make it with ease through the day. I do not have wifi available so all activity will be through 4glte with 3/5 signal. I realize one of the complaints with the phone is battery life. My question is, if I root/unlock bl (which I do with every device), are there kernels that anyone here is running that can undervolt and get me that all day battery life out of this thing? I really don't want to buy it and be back in the same boat again. Unfortunately, the gs4a i had was never boot loader unlocked so i'm stuck on crappy touchwiz with stock kernel. It performs fine but battery life stinks. If I buy this phone, will i be dissapointed? Thanks to everyone for your responses.

You shouldn't have any problem hitting 4hrs SOT in 10 hours off the charger. I never have to charge this thing at work. I leave the house at 5am and don't plug it in until about 9pm.

I just got my moto x pure two days ago. I came from using an S4 active which I still have. The turbo charing helps with the moto x. I'm still getting use to setting up my moto x the way I want it. You learn from trial and error. The main thing for me is that I want to make sure I can return to stock regardless of what happens to my phone.

I range from 3-5 hours of screen on time depending on my usage. If I'm at the 3 hr end, then I usually make it off the charger from 5am-9pm range with a bit of life left. If I'm at the 5 hr end I'll have to charge a decent amount sooner (maybe 5am-6pm) but it's still a full day's use. I've run completely stock and I've tried a few different Roms and Kernels...I've never seen a huge difference in battery life though.
5 hs.of SOT, 12 hs without a charger ( not in the first week of use) you need a minimal of 5 charge/discharge cycles
Its a excellent phone !! (sorry for my english)

I just got my Moto XPE too. Battery life was one of my biggest concerns. I came from a moto e (that little thing had ridiculous battery life). I was worried because of all the complaints of short battery life but I can tell you this:
When I first used the phone (no root, mods, out anything) I got around 4 hours sot pretty easily. That's a little short for me but it isn't terrible. The phone got really warm though and I felt as if it was unoptimized and the CPU was doing more work than it needed to.
I proceeded to void my warranty and unlock the bootloader. First I did a little research on these big.LITTLE cpus then i used a (well pretty much the only established one) custom kernel, Frankenclark, to do a little tweaking.
All I did was turn touchboost off and make the lowest CPU frequency one step lower, as well as turning hotplug to where the screen on minimum CPU count is 1. There was basically no loss in performance and it doesn't even get as much as warm now. I can't give you stats on the long term battery life yet but in the time that I wrote this I only lost 2% ( I type slow ).
Before both the big and LITTLE CPU clusters were showing on and pretty much going crazy all the time. Now the big cluster is hardly ever on. The phone by default has touchboost set to turn on cpu1 (which is one of 2 cores in the big cluster) every time you touch the screen, which is very wasteful. (At least that's how it was with this kernel, I'm pretty sure stock did the same thing) I'm currently running TruPureX ROM (stock debloated) but I doubt it gives any battery life improvements. Motorola made a good stock rom. I really like this phone. Good luck with your purchase! PS the Nexus 6p has generally better battery life if you can live with no sdcard and the steeper price. The 6p can also move between carriers as the XPE can. Verizon included which is what I use.
[Edit]
When you put this thing down, you can expect to pick it back up with the same battery % left. Standby is ridiculous, which is nice.
^^Does your screen on setting of 1 cpu stick? On mine with kernel editor it reverts back to 2 after a reboot.

I think I remember it's a bug where it will stick if the screen is on while kernel adiutor is restoring the settings but it will revert to 2 cores if the screen is off while it's restoring. Don't quote me on it but I think that's what it was.

If I set it 1 6 1 (min screen on cores: 1, max cores : 6, max screen off cores 1), the phone will reboot if I don't allow kernel auditor to apply the settings while screen is still on (after a reboot). That is, after phone reboots, if screen goes blank, when I hit the power button, phone will reboot on its own.
Probably not a major issue considering I only reboot about once every week or two. I can make sure I watch the cycle and unlock it, wait for everything to settle, then turn off the screen.
Guess what I just got? someone on eBay was selling the 64gb for 300 bucks in mint condition! Just can't beat it. Thanks to everyone for info and suggestions along the way. Any recommendations on cases and screen protectors? I've always like seidio for cases and whatever is highly rated on @maz0n for screen protectors but any advice would be appreciated!
I have seidio case and holster, I think they only sell one for it, and I love it.

[Q] S4 or OPO - which one is preferable (battery life and performance)?

Hi everyone.
Thinking of getting either the international version of the S4 or the OnePlus One.
Will save some bucks if I get the S4.
With a new battery and MM custom ROM (are there stable ones?) I was thinking this might be a good device.
Or as owners would U say I should add a few $ and opt for the OPO?
Thanks a million!
don't know the battery size of oneplus but the s4 benefits from carrying a spare or using a high capacity battery. opo has a much better CPU. always go newer for me...

Thanks for that input. The OPO has a 3,000 mhA battery and since I am a light user, lasts me 2 days (running stock CM 13 MM).
I guess battery wise the S4 would be a downgrade then. Carrying an extra battery is not an option for me as I will lose it within a week
it's hard to judge but if you're getting two days usage out of 3000mAh then you should be OK with 2600mAh to get back to a charger again. roms with alucard's kernel can be underclocked and or undervolted as well as being run on a power saving profile. that said I'm sure opo has similar options available...
You can also get a 3000mAh battery for the S4.
That being said, it really depends on how high the price difference is.
I personally would go for the OPO, because of the better specs. But I dislike the fact that it has no card slot. This is pretty much a deal-breaker for me.
