Anyone find Sony tablet z underwhelming after waiting for it so long? - Xperia Tablet Z General

After reading GLOWING review of Tablet Z all over the net from professional reviewer wer and your shared experience on XDA. I was honestly quite excited that Sony Tablet Z finally arrived in Thailand a few days ago.
Today I decided to go check it out with intent to purchase one back home. But after playing with it I honestly couldn't make my self buy the tablet. T_T I will try not to comment on the tablet's aesthetic (which I find so so..).
1. The tablet is quite thin, so thin in fact that it flex!. I don't like that too much.
2. The build-in speakers are horrid. I played one of the promo's vid on the tablet and the sound comes out as very high pitch whine.. couldn't believe no one pick this up earlier.
3. Home screen is quite laggy . Unbecoming of Quad core with 2MB rams. My current phone is Galaxy Nexus (almost 2 years old now) is much better in term of smoothness.
4. One of my biggest concern is the 6000mah battery. Not very much considering it is a 10inch tablet. My tablet habits is not like my phone. Usually it might be left on the desk days at a time before I pick it up and play with it. The last thing I want is to be having to plugged it in all the time when I need to use it.
Since no one really report on the screen on time yet, this is quite a mystery to me.
These are my honest concerns, I am by no mean trying to bash the Tablet Z after waiting for it to arrive for so long, so I will just share my 0.2c and hopefully my opinion will change as more user start to share their experience.
Regards!

You complain because it flexes, has a small battery and the speakers suck, but you would be the SAME guy who also complains if they made it twice as thick so it didnt flex and had more room for a bigger battery and speakers. Do you see whats frustrating about reading this post? You cant have it both ways sometimes bud.

Yup. Just like everyone *****es when a device isn't 1080p, but then *****es about lag and/or power consumption of 1080p devices.
hint: There isn't a mobile GPU on the market that can achieve 1080p or greater without sacrificing UI performance or power consumption. (In the case of Adreno320 - to have good performance on a 1080p screen, you must bump the clock speed at least one step, which bumps up the GPU voltage, which bumps up power consumption.)

Hi,
I got my tablet z from japan 3 weeks ago and used it for 1 week. then I sold it cause I'm waiting for a white one here in US (the Japanese version is black)
From my 1 week of experience, I can respond to your questions:
1. too thin that it flexes: On the contrary, when I had mine, I specifically tested to see if I could bend it. I felt the structure to be steady and firm for its thinness.
2. I find it strange that you complain about it's speakers. Usually tablets come with 2 speaker holes, the tablet Z come with 4. As a result, the speaker quality is much better than usual. I never experienced the "high pitch sound quality"you mentioned, on the contrary, I watched several movies on it and it was excellent.
3.The lagginess is something I can partially agree with you. Out of box, I kind of felt it had a very mild noticeable delay, compared to my old samsung galaxy tab, which was extremely smooth. However, for some reason the "lagness" went away in a few days. I don't know if it's because I turned off all the battery preservation mode, or there was some tweaks in settings. Honestly cant remember. The point is when I sold it I was 100% satisfied with it's smoothness. no delay or stalls in opening any apps, or opening several apps at once. No lagging in shifting between apps.
4. I can vouch that the battery is excellent. I turned off all battery conservation mode (STAMINA mode), and used it moderately: surfing web, reading e-books, mild gaming, a lot of movies. with huge use it could last 2 days before charging and with moderate use it could go up to 3-4. I think the overall efficiency of the snapdragon cpu is the reason.
My conclusion: I think you picked up a faulty demo unit of the tablet z, especially the speaker issue. I am sure mine didnt have that and I'm hoping the white one I'm waiting for is fine too.

Well, my first impression is kind of different. The first thing that came up in my mind when I lifted it up was, this thing is so thin and it's so easy to carry with just one hand. The weight is just awesome and it had my eyes on first sight lol. For speaker, I can understand that it's waterproof so it wont be that loud (I also using xperia z at the moment so I understand that part perfectly well) but I do hope that it will be a little bit louder though because for me it will be most likely use for multimedia. Next, for smoothness part, if you ever have a chance to play with Asus Transformer Infinity with stock ROM (before they updated to 4.2.1) you will say it in different way lol.

I realised that my negative experience will probably angered many people out there and I apologise. I appreciate all input to my post and thank you for your patient.
Two of my concerns, with flex and loud speakers stemmed from having to share the tablets with children. You guys might understand my fuss better if you have children of your own. As for tablet flexing, putting on protective case will probably help but I couldn't help worrying about it.
As for the speakers, I just wish the speakers on bigger tablet are loud. Often time playing video, cartoon, video call on my phone is really annoying. You almost have to put your head next to your speaker on the phone sometime. Kids will probably complain constantly about not able to hear their favourite cartoon. You guys might be right about broken speakers on the promo unit. Will check it out again later.
Thanks.

Flex? Why would u want to try and bend it, just because its thin. Speakers sound great u can use eq to get what sound u like. 4.2.2 will sort any lag but ive not experienced any
Battery on video loop last 6 hrs mines in stamina mode and ive been on it two days

Well if you keep waiting for that ONE tablet your waiting forever. "Usually tablets come with 2 speaker holes".. lol the ones I see have only ONE speaker and this has 2. Yet even that people cry. If Sony put them higher ..duh there in the wrong place and your hands cover them. Now there at the bottom and I read again your hands cover them.. pffft.
Lag.. granted I see that on the screen yet EVERY tablet has something. Its Android lol. One of the things I like about this tablet is its a hit and Sony will be doing everything to fix anything..well my hope is that.

Man you dont have to apologize. People come to praise it you can come to dislike it. Never apologize for things like this..

Is it possible that he bought a counterfeit tablet by mistake, that's why it seemed so bad?

Since that it's a demo unit, you might wanna try out the other unit because usually, demo unit lags due to EVERYBODY touching it and abusing it.
I'm waiting patiently here in Malaysia. Btw, how much is it in Thailand?
Oh ya, sawadiccup. Hopefully the pronunciation is correct.

Im also been lurking about this tablet z,imo when its 4.1.2 out of the box then lets wait for a few weeks to release an update cos its in aosp.. I like its design and very thin.. About ur findings on speaker,i think theres no problem with that..

Not disappointed at all, I was going from a Nexus 10 and was already expecting it to be a sidegrade but I do think that the Xperia Z is a better tablet than the N10 all round...
OP mentioned flex, but I don't notice this anymore than the N10 I had which seemed less well built than the Z. Speakers, could be better but I would still say they are better than most tablet speakers due to their placing. Though I do wish every mobile device came with speakers like the HTC ONE
The main reason I changed to the Z from the N10 was that although the N10's screen looked incredible due to the high resolution colours were not saturated enough and contrast was pretty bad, black level was pretty bad too. The Z has awesome colour and contrast for a tablet and whilst the resolution difference is noticiable it's not a big deal, it's still way better than the average 720p.
love the lighness too, battery life seems to be pretty comparable to the N10 as well...

btw about the launcher .. just download nova launcher...

I actually agree. The speakers are a bit to high pitched for my liking. I may have been spoilt by the greatness of the HTC One in order to come to this conclusion.
The stock launcher is definitely on the heavy side. It's not laggy per se but it does ever so briefly stutter every now and then. I am now using Nova Launcher which is soo much lighter that I have yet to feel any stuttering.
In ter,ms of battery life, I find it reasonable. I've had 4 hours and 40mins of screen time watching big bang theory on vlc player and some surfing and app downloading, and I was left with 25% battery life. Total time inc standy was about 12/13 hours.
The tablet isnt perfect, it does have some kinks that a software upgrade can deal with e.g. Stuttering, but not sure if anything can be done for the speakers.
I do the love the design and I wikk give this a chance and hopefully 4.2.2 comes out soon.

I hope sony comes with an update soon, for phones 4.2 isn't a big upgrade but multi-user support on a tablet is nice

The tablet Z is a step in the right direction, great design, thin, light, and great viewing angles from what I've read in reviews. But it comes with mediocre battery life apparently, older gen processor and one thing that I wanted a keyboard dock or cover of some sort. I've seen photos of one, possibly from the Japanese introduction but I don't recall this being an official accessory, perhaps it was not the tablet Z just older tab S. Perhaps Sony will release more accessories in the fall?
Anywho, I believe the next tablet from Sony will be the one to go for since it is supposed to be part of the "One Sony" ideology.

Well I read a review about battery where they looped the video and wifi on brightness high blah blah and got 7h and 20 min. Not the greatest but not the worst.

Regarding battery life I really don't notice much difference between this and the nexus 10. It really depends what you're doing.
All things considered this is one of the two best 10 inch Android tablets you can buy, the other being the nexus 10, nothing comes close to them IMO. I think I'll get to a comprehensive review at some point.

With an uptime of 1day 2hrs, and a screen on time of 7hrs 12minutes, my charge has run out.
This is on 1 charge with heavy web browsing, moderate YouTube and light gaming (I.e, Wired PS3 controller on GTA Vice City)
Thought that was pretty impressive given my Xperia Tablet S dies after 2hrs of web browsing.

Xperia Z - Users Reviews/First Impression

Hi guys,
Lets share your personal reviews/first imprrssion about Xperia Z. Below is mine..
Finally I got my Xperia Z - Black Beauty.
Overall its good phone, seriously best from Sony but it could have been more better.
Anyways, I will share more details by tomorrow as I still didnt spent much time with XZ.
UPDATED:
As I am coming from Galaxy Note 2, I want to compare XZ & Note2.
Pros:
-Beautiful Design
-Waterproof
-Good Camera (Rear only)
Cons:
-Speaker position is horrible
-Poor Battery Life
-Front Camera not so good
-Overheating Issues (can tolerate as its waterproof)
-Cannot use Default Launcher with Xperia Widgets: Lags like anything
WHAT I AM MISSING COMING FROM NOTE 2:
-MultiWindow
-Large Screen
-Customizable Notification Bar
sent from Xperia Z
I played with a retail model this afternoon got to take it outside to take some outdoor pics and videos.
Pics are good, video I was less than impressed they were not as sharp as pics and colours were off.
For example I took a pic of a bus at the bus stop the camera replicated with good colour accuracy whilst video made the bus a darker reddish/purple and there was loss of detail and man the slow auto focusing at times that has plagued all previous sony devices was raising it's ugly head again.
Loud speaker is hopeless in evena slightly noisy environment, audio is loud outdoors but bass could have been better.
Also the Z seriously feels a bit boxy imo.
i read in some review that camera app take 2 or 3 second to open up when it not running at background
is true?

I tried an xperia z in a "3" shop recently. There was a bit of background noise from shoppers and staff talking while I tested the speaker and ringtone volume. This was enough to drown out the sound from the xperia z. Pre-order cancelled, HTC One on order. Shame as I got quite excited about this phone. Good effort though Sony. Must try harder next time!

The ability to hear the ringtone while out and about I imagine, hardly an unreasonable expectation or reason to be called a fool.
Im in case 5% in 5 minutes(mkv movie 3.5gb 1080p mp4 4mbps birate in bestplayer HD accelation so i was not able to finish film before i run out of juice streaming wifi) , At work i got 150mbps but at home i got 72mbps can not get 150 :silly:
except that every thing is alright I dont have any problem
ahh and manage to warm my hand to the point when they sweaty ! ) 67-70

This is what really bothers me: low ringtone volume. I don't want to lose notifications or incoming calls because of it.
How's the vibration? Can you feel it properly if the phone is in your pocket?

Seems harsh just to cancel a phone just because the ringtone wasn't loud enough. Did you even try it with the xLoud etc on?
And who really uses the sound, you really only have a use for it when the phone is somewhere else but your pocket. (which is where it should be)
Either way. See ya.
I just finished up my review today.

Give it a chance too settle, after about 4-5 full charges; battery will reach full working capacity and also Rom will have built up dalvic cache. So you will certainly get better performance after a few days use.

My first impression were very good: I posted them in many threads here.
Though I have some new info:
- Battery lasted for 11h42m yesterday, standby time. Screen on time: 3h22m (auto brightness). I have screenshots to back it up. I was always connected to wifi or mobile network. I didn't play games, mostly chatting, facebook, some youtube videos, listned to some music and internet browsing. It's not horrible, but not very good either. I got home with 1% left at 23:00 in the evening.
Today, I had worse results. Mostly at home all day, so wifi. Had a total of sub 3hours of screenon time! This is already my third charging cycle so I don't expect things to get any better. At the moment I am not impressed by the battery life of the XZ, but it's not horrible either.
- Phone's size and design: beautiful, though it's already not so "WOW" anymore (got used to it I guess). The phone atracts a lot of duts and fingerprints. But what I am starting to see is that the XZ is not so good looking at ergonomic aspects! It just doesn't feel nice in my hand because it isn't curved at the sides/back. I picked up my S3 again today and wow, it felt like a total different kind of thing. It was so comfortable in my hand compared to the XZ, while the S3 is almost as big as the XZ. And because the S3 has no onscreen buttons, the screen actually showed more info then the XZ.
- Screen: I'm getting more and more used to it, it looks really nice and sharp. Viewing angles are starting to bother me less and less, but sometimes I still see them.
- Speaker quality: seems very loud, but quality wise it seems bad. And I cover it up with my right hand a lot without wanting too.
I'm thinking about returning the XZ.... yeah. Didn't expect it myself. But the main problem is: it doesn't feel like a big leap from my S3. So basicly, I bought a new phone (the XZ) which feels much worse in my hand (ergnomic wise, it's not comfortable) then my S3, the screen is bigger but I actually see less content on it because of the software buttons, and while the screen is sharper a bit the viewing angles and contrast are worse. It also isn't a lot faster then my S3, it doens't do anything my S3 couldn't till now (yes HDR video, I tried it once and that's it).
My biggest problem is the size and design: without the curved sides/back the phone is hard to use for me with one hand. Really didn't expect this. This together with what I said above, make me consider returning the XZ and wait for a few more months. I saw (again) an article on a big Ducht newssite about the XZ's succesor and that it will come in summer 2013. It should have a 1080p 4.8 screen and the S600 chipset. This off course also doens't really help my feeling of returning the XZ...
I still have till next week to think about my XZ, but I might return it. No offence to Sony, the XZ is really a good phone, but the fact that I can't use it comfortable in my hand is something important to me. I do have small hands, but I can use the S3 perfectly and the XZ not so much.
EDIT: The other problem is, there isn't anything at the moment which I would consider buying. I have looked again at the HTC One and still don't want it. Maybe I will return my XZ and wait for Samsung to reveal the S4 and hope that it's build quality/design is a step up from the S3. If not, I can get the XZ (or the succesor of the XZ) beginning of the summer. Really bummed out..

This is my problem exactly! I ditched my Galaxy Note 1 because I kept hearing of all the earth shattering flagships coming out. The Oppo Find 5, the Xperia Z, the HTC One. I got a Note 2, and I have the same feelings. Sure its a little faster, but I feel like I am wasting my upgrade (I know that's a uniquely USA problem) on this phone. The Note 1 could do everything nearly as well, especially with custom ROMs.
I can still return my Note 2 but I honestly don't even know what I would use instead. There is nothing that really stands out. I was holding out hope for the Nokia EOS/Lumia 1000 but who knows if that will even deliver anything new.

Personally I think it isn't worth will upgrading a high end 2012 phone, maybe if Google releases an android version that has something crazy cool and that needs a ridiculous amount of horsepower. Otherwise I think you can hang on to your phone until the end of 2014 or so

My HTC One review [Updated 21/3]

Sorry for the long post btw, but here is my review of the HTC One for those who are interested
Just going to add my review, I have had the phone since Friday afternoon and it is now Tuesday afternoon.
I am coming from a HTC Sensation which I’ve had since launch so it was being to feel old, battery get rubbish etc... I have had a HTC for the past 5 years, so yes I am a bit of a HTC fan boy, but I’ll try be as honest as possible. (I was quite willing to go to the s4 if they improved things but they didn’t)
Build quality and physical features:
Firstly like everyone has said, the build quality and feel of the phone is amazing! Better than the iPhone. It is light but it isn’t too light
If that makes sense, it heavy enough to make it feel premium. It looks gorgeous feels gorgeous and is gorgeous. I don’t find it slippery in my hand, however when it’s in your pocket because of its height and smooth back I do feel abit uneasy about it slipping out when you’re sitting down.
I think the size is perfect for me, but that’s personal preference. The volume buttons are nice, in the right place, feel good and easy to press. The
The micro usb is on the button , which is a plus for me to put into my android dock, but is much more to the right hand side, would of been nice for it to be more central but I’m being picky.
The power button is flush and smooth, and far to over the left hand device to me making it awkward if you have small hands (luckily I don’t) however I am totally used to it now so it doesn’t bother me anymore.
The button layout I actually love now I am used to it. Android phones only need 2 buttons, and long as you remember the double tap or hold down home shortcuts you will be fine. You get used to it way to quick, so much that I used my sensation the other day and kept pressing the wrong buttons on it.
Battery: (using auto brightness, power save off, WI fi on mostly.)
Ok so I wasn’t expecting much until I started reading the reviews of people saying it’s awesome. It isn’t awesome, it’s ok. Through a work day with light usage I get from 100% to about 80%, which is more than anyone else. Though saying that it seems most of my battery is trying to find mobile signal (I get crap signal for every network at work) so I’m trying to go aeroplane mode as no point searching for signal that isn’t there, I’ll keep you all updated on how this works out.
Then when I get home I whack out the games, do bit browsing, check Facebook, text all night etc… and it does drop quickly. Both nights I have gone from 80% to 0% in about 5/6 hours with heavy usage. Which tbf isn’t bad, but it’s not great.
Point to add, I’m still messing about with settings and apps, and I do find myself just turning my phone on to play with it , so I’m expecting the battery life to improve when I stop being a little kid . I have also drained it fully and fully charged it 4 times.
For example useage today, my brightness is at lowest it will go, wifi off, radio on, its been on for about 6 hours, about 30 mins screen on, and i have been playing music for about 10 minutes on full volume, my battery is at 79%.
Sense 5:
Very very nice, big improvement over 4 I feel. Nice and clean, simple to use and lots of nice little features, as well as some annoying ones.
I like the icons, I love the message app, it allows you to change theme of how the texts set out, so for example texts sent by you show up one colour, by the other person another, and then a different background. It’s just the little things like that that make a difference. Settings are similar to 4 so nothing to go on about there.
Blink feed is handy, but more a gimmick I feel, they need to greatly improve the sources because all I see at the minute is my Facebook newsfeed which annoys me slightly. But it has potential.
I like when you unlock the screen it goes to where you were last. And the lock screen is very nice and simple. It does annoy me how the preview texts come up though, at the bottom but only 2 lines of it, not like sense 4 when you got the bubble in the middle.
The thing that annoys me is with no menu button you can’t quickly change your wallpaper or go into settings etc... You have to drag down the notification bar and go to settings. When in an app and pressing home button, you go back to the app draw and not the home screen, that annoys me, but is useful every 1/10 times you press it! I would have also liked a quick settings bar but I have an app to do that anyway.
These are all little niggle bits which most of you won’t mind about, and can be resolved with rooting/little software tweaks by htc.
Screen:
Nothing more to say than amazing. Best screen I have seen on a smartphone hand down, viewing angles, colours etc... all brilliant. And the right size
Camera:
I haven’t had a massive play with the camera but what I have I have been impressed. There is virtually no shutter lag which is brilliant (big thing coming from sensation) you press the button it takes a picture, and keep pressing it, it keeps taking pictures. The quality in low light is amazing; you can just see on the screen how much light it is picking up.
The video quality is great and that extra microphone does make a difference to sound quality, there is a lack of bass however but it is crystal clear. Can also take pics while videoing which is handy?
The amount of options to edit your photo is ridiculous; I think I will need a year with the phone to work out all of them! Unsure whether this is a good thing or bad, after all if it’s there but not used, what’s the point? But it is nice you have the option.
Boom sound:
This is the one feature that is literally drawing dropping; the sound that comes out of this phone is amazing. Out of the people I’ve shown they have all been amazed and said wow that is so loud and clear for a phone. The need for those little crappy portable speakers is gone, it still can’t replace a good dock but it comes close.
This is also makes a huge difference when playing games and apps etc... the sound quality and loudness makes it just that much more enjoyable!
Although please note, you will never miss an alarm again! They do need to lower the volume a bit to compensate for the loudness, as stupid as that sounds.
Other:
The processor is amazing and lag free. However it does heat up, not as much as my sensation does when put under heavy load, but it’s noticeable. Plus side is it will make a lovely hand warmer in those cold months, downside I’m guessing the heat with affect battery life.
HTC ONE Vs. Sony Xperia Z
Luckily my brother decided to buy the sony xz the day before I got my one, and I got the chance to compare the phones (sorry no pics or videos didn’t have the time)
I have to say the htc one was better, in my opinion in most ways, it felt better, looked better, nicer screen, better viewing angles, better camera (only tested at a restaurant in low light though).
The only thing I prefer about the sony was the fact the power button was on the side, which made it very easy to press.
Closing thoughts:
The HTC One is no doubt the best phone on the market at the minute in my opinion. It has pretty much everything you want from a phone. It can be improved, of course it can, but HTC are onto a winner here. Everybody who has seen/heard it has said wow that is a nice phone, how much is that etc… Obviously we can’t compare it fully to the s4 yet, which will be its biggest rival, but I think the 2 phones will have different audiences. The question is, will this phone withstand the test of time with key lime pie looking to be released and maybe a nexus 5, we will see!
Please leave your opinions/comments, but note this is my personal view but I welcome a healthy debate on the subject! I hope this helps those who are looking at buying this phone.
UPDATE 21/3
Ok some now ive had the phone nearly a week i have some things to add.
Firstly anybody worrying about the notification LED, dont , it is bar far brightest i have had on any phone (including htc sensation and desire) it might be smaller but it is noticeable, when charging it obviously isnt on full brightness, but when you get a notification its easily see able.
2ndly the battery: I was having play and found i was get some wakelock issues from google maps and fb. I turned off google now and have seen a massive improvement in battery life.
Currently today im on 65% , phone has been on for 13 hours, about hour of screen on time. about 30 mins of playing real racing, tiny bit of checking wi fi etc.. Before i would on about 30% . Therefore my opinion has greatly improved over the battery. Can last me 2 days if i really want it too.
On a side note, i am getting my phone exchanged at end of march due to gap (see the thread on gap issue if you want more info) but i am truely happy with this phone now the battery has improved, and im getting used to doing things slightly different way.
Re: My HTC One review
Nice review. Thx
Ur review about the battery is more reliable to me than those who States 6hours sceen on. 6hours for me is only possible if u just leave the phone on desk with screen on untouched lol.
One question. Can you make a call to someone using speaker and see if the other side Can hear u well?
Also any scratches yet? Is it ez to get scratched?
Thanks

Yer i am questioning some of the people who are saying battery is so good, i have always been light on my battery and it is not lasting
as long as my htc sensation. Im trying different things with it atm to see if i can make it last longer, but i mean it still lasts a full day, just about though.
I have been on the phone to a few people and they say the speaker phone is good, not amazing or the best they have heard, but good.
While not on speaker phone people have said its really clear and very little background noise.
No scratches at all yet, ive had no case on it or anything but not a thing, its looks as good as it did on the first day.
The back doesn't smudge at all, and the screen just wipes clear on your shirt.
I hope you have some sunshine to try the screen under direct sunlight
How do you feel the weight of the phone in hand compared to Sensation?
GPS lock is faster too?

We had some the other morning , not alot mind you and i didnt have any problems with viewing the screen, only half brightness, but it wasnt particularly sunny!
GPS lock is much faster than sensation, used to take about 30 seconds on sensation, takes about 5/10 on the one.
Weight wise its feels lighter than the sensation, i have to say as silly as it sounds i think htc have got the weight spot on.
Light enough to hold in and watch film etc.. not too light to feel cheap.
Fair review, nice to read a 'real users' thoughts on the battery, I can only see good things coming for this handset.
I honestly think it'll do the the SGS4 what the SGS3 did to the HTC One X, steal all of it's limelight!

I don't know if this is a subliminal message towards my post but whatever. At the end of today it will be two days with the phone. I am noticing that battery life is decent. Not as great as I was hoping it to be, however yesterday I did use the phone really heavily as I had a day off. Unplugged at 100% battery 11am and it was at like 3% come 9pm. That's pretty good but I was hoping it would last at least another hour or two hours. I did have to put it on power saver mode at 20% so that's a thing to note. As I get used to the phone and it goes through a couple of charges I think I will really be able to tell properly but for now, that is all.

Thanks for the interessting Review !:good:
Thanks for the review. It's always better to hear from the end user instead of web reviews alone. Gives a more balanced opinion. One quest if possible. Any chance you could record loud music maybe from hi Fi or music channel or club to see how sensitive the mic is. You don't have to upload to YouTube. Or if anyone else could test. My One X and Sensation were really poor even though HTC boasted about stereo mic
Once again thanks.

Ive recorded sound coming from my bose sound system and it is very good. Better than any smartphone i have heard, it does restrict the bass abit , but you get clear audio so the sacrifice is worth it.
Im updating original as well since i have a few to add about the battery.
Are you having problems with the back button?

nope, sometimes you have to press the back or home button twice but i think down to just missing the exact spot.
But not having the problems some others have described

The predictive text input is fecking horrendous........only thing I found wrong with the phone....
I think the back and home button issue is down to the small footprint of the actual buttons, i reckon people expect to just be able to hit around the area of the button for it to work when in fact it needs to be more precise.
Good or bad?......up to the user, i think good.

So you're returning it for the gap issue?
This worries me. When I had a Desire HD, the speaker blew. I had to give my phone to Telus so they could send it to HTC to have it repaired. They sent it back and it wasn't fixed at all, so back it went. I had to use an HTC Hero for a month.
When I had my iPhone, I just walked into the apple store and they gave me a new one.
I'm worried I am waiting all this time and I'll get a gapped phone, or what have you.

I thought I saw in a review that the keyboard was way better than any previous HTC phone. It wasn't bad at all on my HTC Desire HD. How bad could it be now?!

I cant comment on the keyboard as i just installed swift key as i used it on my own phone and cant go wrong with it.
Yup getting it exchanged, but tbf most people seem to have a gap, so im hoping just because its the first batch, and things will improve.
But yer im not worried about the gap now, but to me it what can happen in 6 months time, with use etc.. it will probably expand and
cause problems, so best to get it sorted now.
I did send a pic to htc and they told me to get it exchanged.

Why I will return mine...

Just wanted to share why I'll be returning mine after one day of use, for those interested. Not trying to bash the device or anything. First I want to say that it's more an issue with me and my personal preferences than an issue with the tablet, depending on how you want to see it.
1. The screen
I'm not a fan of what I perceived as dull and washed out colors on this device. They aren't as vivid as on my Note 2 for an example. Yes I activated the Bravia Engine and tried it turned off as well. Blacks aren't really black but grey almost. These issues makes the whole screen look poor and boring in my opinion. Especially when playing the same movie on both the Note and XTZ simultaneously.. the difference is huge. There was also some light bleeding around every side of the screen. Mostly noticeable with black colors, which would have been fixed if the black colors were black/turned off and not lit to the point of looking grey. The most important thing for me with a device centered around a screen, like phones, tablets and TV's is of course the screen itself. So for this reason alone it's going back. I tried looking for a fix but couldn't find anything..
You might wonder, "didn't you try it out first before you bought it?". Yes, I did for a couple of minutes and I also watched plenty of video reviews where these issues weren't mentioned or noticeable. But once I got home and tried it in different light conditions and had more time to play around with it, the difference in screen colors was more apparent. Besides I wasn't too worried about having to return it if I didn't like it since I bought it from a store that lets you buy a product, try it out and then decide if you want to keep it or return it, within a month.
2. Battery life
2 hours of watching a movie drained 35% of the battery life. Wi-Fi and all other applications turned off. I wasn't impressed. Not just when watching movies but playing games and browsing the web did the battery drain fast... I had to charge it after 4 hours of use which brings me to the next issue I have with the device..
3. Charging time
I initially thought there was something wrong with mine when I charged it for the first time. After 2 hours of charging the green juice in the battery icon was barely halfway through.. The battery took almost 5-6 hours to charge fully from 0%, the device was turned off while charging btw. I looked this up on forums and yes, according to others the charge time is very slow.
4. Lag
There were some lag and I'm not talking about the minimal lag there usually is with Android devices. But lag that could freeze the device for seconds for no apparent reason. This happened a couple of times, like when using Google Chrome and when I was on the homescreen. I don't know if this is because of the hardware or the combination of Sony + Android software. Point is, it lags too much compared to my Note 2. It felt like my old Note 1...
5. "Water resistant"
I was mainly interested in this device because of its waterproof capability, which to begin with wasn't so impressive. 30 minutes max. submerged in water up to 1 meter down. I was mainly planning on using it in the bathtub after work. But then I read on some forums that some people had issues with water breaking through the tabs or the tabs themselves breaking off. The tabs didn't feel so sturdy/reliable after I had the chance to close and open them up a couple of times. Felt like they would wear out and ultimately let water through. So I didn't really trust that feature..
So, those are the reasons it's going back. I'll look for something else or wait for the right thing for me to be released. Cheers!

I completely concur with points 2, 3, 4 & 5. I watch a lot of movies on this tablet, but as you say, despite airplane mode and the Mobile Bravia Engine turned off, the battery drain is absolutely phenomenal. My device is constantly on charge - it takes a good 6 hours, if not more to charge the tablet to 100%, watch a movie or two, or a long YouTube video and it's time to recharge again!
I rooted my tab - in the build.prop I changed the WiFi refresh interval to like 10 minutes, but even that doesn't stop the constant drain!
Point No.5, I can understand your concern here - so far, I've used my tablet vigorously in water. Several times in the bath and once in the shower. All times where successful with the covers tightly closed. Leading on from that, I know this is likely to be un-avoidable, but it seems a bit of a waste having a 'water-resistant' device that responds to water 'touches' on the screen. It makes watching a film a nightmare. I did however install the beta touch block from the ZR, but whenever the screen is touched (constantly in the water) a large label appears in the center of the screen with a slide bar to deactivate it - plus, the screen turns a slightly transparent black (on purpose) meaning it's useless got even a film.
It's a good stab by Sony, let down completely by the software. I've had it since release. so refund is not an option. If it was, I would - on eBay they're only going for half the price I paid so I'm really stuck with it... No 4.2.2 for the WiFi either!
I'm not in agreement with some of your points but in others I do agree. I contacted Sony today as last night this Tablet failed badly IMO. I had the fun job of rebuilding my main server. So I plugged in the tablet to the mains and set up a load of TV to stream from my NAS. A few hours into the job.....silence!! At first I thought I'd left on some power save setting, but no. Despite being plugged in and having about 70% of charge in the battery to start with it drained it totally and the tablet shut down. I don't think it's asking too much to expect it to keep running when plugged into the mains.
I've either got a faulty one or they have a serious design fault.
Sorry to hear you didn't like it but clearly everyone has their own preferences etc. Personally I love the XZ Tablet. I seem to get better battery life than you do, though I've had mine longer so maybe the battery has "settled in" - if they do that I don't know.
The charging times are quite bad I agree but it isn't an issue for me. It has plenty of juice to get through two days for me and I just charge it overnight.
I haven't experienced the lag like you mentioned. I did have it freeze up for about 5 seconds last night but that was the first "issue" I've had. I find the tablet extremely quick and responsive. There is the odd Android lag now and again but nothing that bothers me at all.
Good luck with your next tablet. Maybe wait for the next Nexus 10. That should be a beast.
I am really surprised to see how many people complain about the battery life of this device. Usually I feel that its me who have bad battery on every device while other people praise how good it is.
I just 2 weeks ago flew from Helsinki to Hong Kong and during the flight I watched about half season of game of thrones in HD and played some games. I still had about 25% left after that. I would say its pretty good result after 11 hour flight.
I do have wifi only version, I dont know if it makes any difference.
Screen I think its beautiful. I also had Note 2 but those colors are actually a bit too over-saturated for my taste and I don't like it so much. Of course blacks are much better on the Amoled screen and yes this tablet does have some light bleed on the screen and yes if I start paying attention to it, it is really annoying.
Charging time I can't complain much since I put it charge when I go to sleep and when I wake its back to full and will easily last whole day. I did however have to buy the charging dock because I started to feel that if I take the flap out every day it will eventually wear off (I actually already once managed to get the pin somehow badly and the flap couldn't close properly after that. Thankfully I was able to push it back straight)
After coming from Asus Transformer Infinity I have been so happy with this tablet. I think it is the best 10 inch tablet currently. Yes, better than Nexus 10. Probably the new Nexus 7 have somethings which I do envy and maaaaybe I will get that one also.
I am sorry to hear that you are experienced this with the device. however i felt directly opposite of most or not all of your complaint.
i still enjoy my tablet like day one

I was fed up with using a laptop on my lap, so I decided to get a tablet.
I initially went to buy an iPad. Picked up the iPad, picked up the Xperia - no contest. Bought the Xperia. Makes the iPad feel like a brick.
To me, the Xperia is what a tablet should be - so light, so slim, lovely display.
Charging is a bit slow but I use my son's iPad charger and that makes it quicker. I'm just loving the Xperia.

I do have wifi only version, I dont know if it makes any difference..

So you're saying that you watched 5 hrs of HD video then played some games for ..... period of time and had 25% of battery left?
Enlighten me Andy as to how.... Screen brightness, volume, Video Player etc etc? I've never got nowhere near that on batteries so I'm trying to establish if it's either the software I use or I just got a bad tablet.
EDIT: My tablet is the 16GB WiFi Also.

auto screen brightness, stock video player. And I think its quite normal get about this. I do travel a lot and usually I have some movies on the tablet and usually during long flights (always Europe to Asia and back flights) I watch at least 3 movies and battery is always fine. I don't play 3D games almost at all but for example World of Goo I can play a lot. And I never used stamina mode or low battery mode.
When going to airplane mode I think that this lasts very well. web browsing uses quite a lot battery.
But I overall I am really happy of the battery lasting. Compared to my current mobile phone HTC One which just dies if I play a bit candy crush.

Ok thanks... I'll test some more as I do really like the tablet but if it's not fit for my purpose it will have to go. I can't use the stock player though as I'm partially deaf and no subs on that. Not to worry, I'll put my ear trumpet in and give it a go with that

Actually now when you mention it I didn't use stock because english is not my native language and its easier for me to follow when I can read the subtitles if some words hard to make out. I used MX Player, it supports subs.

Well it's charged to 100% so I'll give it another try. And Sony might even reply to my email but I'll not hold my breath on them getting back to me.
Battery life on all such devices is not going to be amazing. There simply has to be a pay off between performance and what the battery can offer.
This is an ultra thin, light tablet with a full HD screen and quad core CPU! WE wanted these parameters now we have them all I see people do who own all the top level devices is moan about the battery life! Same with the mobiles. Until battery manufacturers develop higher performance batteries this is what we simply have to accept. Failing that purchase a low cost low specification tablet or phone then one can reasonably expect a higher usage period.
To the OP. I respect your opinion. One does have to ponder though given your negative feedback, how this tablet managed to win the EISA award 2013-14 for best tablet? I also ponder what exactly you are looking for in a tablet? Can you name a more accomplished Android tablet at present?
All and every tablet, mobile phone, TV, electronic device, will have its positives and negatives. Its finding the balance of what we can live with and accepting some compromises.
I have owned the Asus TF 101, TF 201, Infinity, Toshiba Thrive, Acer a500, and a700.
This Xperia tablet is the best so far. The responsiveness is the best out of all of them. Battery life is not the best but is competitive (the Acer a500 and a700 had the best battery life, with the Sony being competitive with the Asus tablets I had...I never used the keyboard docks for the Transformers though).
The Sony is the slowest charging tablet I have owned though. I have used the Samsung S4 and a 2a Blackberry charger that seems to have sped up the charging so I think the charger Sony included is part of the problem. I have not done any tests to measure the differences in charging, but it certainly is faster using a 3rd party charger.
Agreed with the water resistance; I don't trust the little tabs either, but the water resistance is only a minor feature for me. I was just sick of the poor performance and responsiveness that these other tablets had. I am very picky and while this tablet is not perfect (no tablet is), I can live with this one and I think the grass is always greener.
I was actually wondering about the time it takes for the tablet to charge: could the culprit be the charger ? I also have an Xperia ZL and the chargers are identical: same type, same output, etc.
Maybe Sony didn't bother to release a charger with a higher output for Tablet Z?

Thanks! Not sure which one to get now, want one that is fully waterproof and works normally in water. Otherwise there's no point in getting a tablet for me, my Note 2 will do fine.

Yes, the colors can be over-saturated on the Note 2. But the amazing thing with that device is that you can select 4 different screen modes to fit your personal preference. That's a feature that was missing on the XZT for me, I just wanted the choice to be able to have more vivid colors.

Probably won because of its slim design, "water resistant" feature and weight? Those are the only things that sets it apart from most other tablets. And in my opinion the most important thing was the water resistance which to me doesn't seem so reliable with this device.
What I want in a tablet is for it to be fully waterproof with no unreliable tabs that could let water through.. no 30 min max. submerged in water up to 1 meter down BS. I want it to function normally when water touches the screen. I want it to have a beautiful screen, which the XZT doesn't have in my opinion. I want it to be fast, have a long battery life and short charging time. If I can't have the waterproof feature, then there's no point for me to buy a tablet.
Can I name a better Android tablet? Since the water resistant feature on the XZT is useless, yes.. Any of the best offerings from other brands that doesn't have a screen with dull colors. I'd rather take one of those than the XZT if I had to choose a tablet.

They are good reasons to not want to keep the tablet, but if they are your requirements you are going to be waiting for a while. It is not really possible currently to make capacitive touchscreens that are sensitive and accurate underwater. You could use a waterproof resistive screen, but anyone who has used one knows how awful they are to use.
You want it waterproof but without port covers, you could have the ports sealed internally instead, but then you would have to dry out each port after use or it would corrode the connectors and short when plugged in wet. They make waterproof camera housings and they always have sealed covers and no touchscreen.
You want it powerful with good battery life, that is easily done, but not in a device this thin.
I'm sure it will be possible to get what you are after eventually, but you're going to be waiting for years, and even then it's probably not going to match up to the devices that don't need to be waterproof with magical port covers.

Make sure your MX player is played in HW mode! In SW mode the video will be using cpu instead of gpu which draining the battery like hell! For my tablet, i used to reach 12h screen on times, usually 10h but sometimes only 8h. And the battery is pretty great.

I'm prepared to wait. For me now, there's no point in buying a tablet if it can't be fully waterproof and have a good screen. I'll just stick with my Note 2 which is basically like a smaller tablet, buying a tablet without waterproof capability would be like buying a large Note 2. Feels like a waste of money to buy an android device that can do everything my Note 2 can but just with a larger screen. So I can wait!

Fair enough, I wanted it mostly for the light weight, decent screen resolution and build quality for web browsing and ebooks and so far it's perfect.
But if I had wanted it mainly for the waterproofing I would be disappointed as well, it would be more honest to call it water resistant or splashproof.
I just though it was worth pointing out that if it actually was fully waterproof and usable underwater with current technology it would be a different machine entirely and useless for what most people who brought it wanted from it.
On the other hand I really wish it had the note's stylus, if it had one it would be great for drawing being as thin as it is.

Positive experience of Z1

So many negative threads about how the screen sucks, the camera sucks etc etc. Would be nice to hear from the people who actually like the Z1. Write down your experience with the phone. It doesn't have to be all rosy but hopefully it will give a little bit more nuance.
Sure.
Last Saturday I got my Z1, I've had a Gnex for a long time and my first impressions are very good. The device is amazingly fast, everything works as it should, multitasking is very good, all performance related things are nothing to complain about.
The screen 'dead-on' is also nice the viewing angles people are talking about is something I don't really see as a problem. I just held the phone in an angle and when the colours start to wash out it's an angle I would never use my phone at. Other than that the camera does have noise issues, although it's not too bad IMHO. (do bear in mind I come from the Gnex so pretty much every new device is a big upgrade) I don't think the noise issues aren't too bad though, as Sony can easily fix the noise issues with a software update. Speaking of updates, the Z1 already had 3 updates. Whether this is a good or a bad thing is up to you, but to me it sounds like it's well supported by Sony.
Battery... I feel mixed about it. It's better than my Gnex, but again, pretty much every device is. I did expect a lot more from a 3000 mAh battery though. I had about 23 hours of standby and roughly 4 hours of screen on time. That is with 3G on all the time, wifi on most of the time and applications like Twitter, Whatsapp and Facebook running in the background. It's a weird thing though, the xperia ZR gets 11:30 (11 hours and 30 minutes) of browsing in the GSMarena test. While the Z1 gets about half of that. I have the feeling Sony has to do some software optimization, since they can pull it off. (note: the ZR battery is 2300 mAh) How long this will take, and if Sony will even do it, I have no idea. If the problem is related to Qualcomm it may take a long time though since they're not very keen on doing things in a different way. (look at the Nexus 7 2013 and binaries)
Overall I personally think the Xperia Z1 is an amazing device. It's super fast, the build quality is amazing and it feels really good.(get a case though!) There are things to improve on such as battery life and it depends on whether you trust Sony to fix these issues or not.

Got mine yesterday.
S/W: problems yet
Performance: Extremely quick 9/10
Screen Quality: 8/10 but too early to say if I'm just being jaded by all the moaning.
Camera seems pretty good to me, what a blessing a proper camera button makes.
Shame I can't upload samples of photos / videos etc. I will find a way if request. Anyone wanna buy a Galaxy 3? ho ho..
Oh one thing I don't like, is having to uncover the charger port to charge it up (i know its re waterproofing).
My options are :-
Cut the cover flap off or buy a magnetic charger unit £30.00 !!!!! (I probably will.)
So far pretty dam good phone.
Paul
I've had my XZ1 since Saturday 21st sept, and so far I love it, the camera is good but has issues like the grain and noise which prevent it from being a great one.
Love the sharpness and colours of the screen and it's resolution makes browsing the Web or forums so easy.
I've gotten used to the waterproof tabs after having my Xtz before I got the z1 but at least if you don't like having to keep opening the flap you can use a magnetic charger cable or dock.
That's all I can think of at lol

screen performance not so good from an angle... but who use it like that... 98% i use head on... 2 % ready to sacrifice. for head on awesomeness..
battery is a ****. (Wifi and bluetooth on, may be due to this)
Auto mode of camera is a ****..

sound from speaker is not so good... even headphone sound (wired) is not good...
performance... nothing can beat it... samsung s4 struggles before this beast..

My showers have become a lot less of a chore and more of a pleasure;
https://vine.co/v/hvY5MVFTLXd?fb_action_ids=10151847100714799
Just add 2 hooks with a little bit of sugru
So I got mine yesterday.
Hardware: I can't tell you how gorgeous this phone is if you haven't seen it yet, the blend of pure vanilla white with the aluminium frame is a spot on direct hit in my eyes. Under the hood HW is even better. The S800 chip seriously flies and it's been a long time but Android is now becoming just as fluid as iOS and WP and it's great to see that.
Software: I am a big fan of the Sony UI simply because it's easy and it looks pretty vanilla, I haven't installed a Homescreen in 2 years now ever since I got a Xperia S and I am not changing that now. There is some minor SW bugs where some dialouges just doesn't show up but I can still press them(if I know their real position)
Camera: The camera is a serious SW mess because I know and I see that Sony has a good camera HW-wise BUT their SW and esspecially Auto mode is seriously one complete mess. Other than the major problems with the noise the camera app is fluid and it's quite promosing to have some nice options like AR and the Livestream mode.
Sound: THe loudspeaker is decent and nothing you would cheer about but it's better than my old XS of course. The headphone jack for me is perfect and I hear absolutely no difference when playing the same song on my XS or my Z1
Screen: THe screen for me is supersharp, I can only see a little difference in sharpness between my XS and Z1 but that is expected but still it's a nice feature. The colours are almost accurate(I had to increase my blue level by +3 to +4), viewing angles aren't the best but they are clearly better than my XS besides head on is the way to go in my world.
Battery: Battery is a mixed bag; Standby is EXCELLENT hours can go and the phone is still on the same percentage. However and this is a big one the battery during Web browsing or other minor things is seriously underperforming. Clearly this is also something wrong with the SW because other Sony phones does not have the same problem.
I hope this gives a good view on the phone, clearly Sony needs to fix the battery and the Camera and for some swap out faulty screens. Other than that my money was well put!
I got my XZ1 on monday and I love it so far! Yeah the viewing angles aren't the best but who is gonna use their phone from those angles? The camera is good, yes it needs some improvements but it isn't unusable.
The waterproof tabs take some getting used to after coming from a Nexus 4 but my battery lasts me about a day and a half almost 2; so I don't have to undo the tab to often.
I like the speaker, it isn't as loud as the one on the Note 2 I had but it is WAY better than the Nexus 4. I really like the notification LED also, its in a really discrete location and its pretty visible; and paired with light manager it is really useful for me.
Wifi has also been good for me, at least compared to my old N4. The overall speed of the phone is awesome! This thing rips!
Coming from the Nexus 4 this was a SOLID upgrade for me. SD card slot, better camera, Snapdragon 800, better speakers (ear piece also), and its waterproof? I can't really complain on my end!
I think people are just being a little too picky. I mean come on the phone has only been out for almost a week now. What else can you expect? Sony has been releasing updates pretty frequently so hopefully everything will get better soon.
So i will do that short: Sony Xperia Z1 is just good. Not perfect. but good and defently better as my old Xperia S. (Whiches i aso not so bad if i compare to to other cellphone from this timewindow)
Mine is good so far, only got it for 2days will test camera etc some more
One thing I can say about the screen:
I went to local store and compared to ZU screen, both on full brightness and my Z1 screen definitely has better colors and details then Z1. I tried the Sony sample pics and compared those.
Better details is due to 5" vs 6.4" I guess. But colors are really better on Z1, also in video I noticed the same result

Love the z1
Got the Z1 on pre-order, arrived the 17th.
- First thing i notice, phone is not bulky (in oposition to what reviewers say). Second thing, sony actually provides screen protect (Awsome)
- Phone turns on great and continues to perform great, Loving 4g and the speed and smoothness of the whole system.
- Screen contrast is not superb, lost in comparison to the s4, but during video streaming/playback, it performed amazingly as being hit directly by sunlight it was still very clear.
- Overall The phone is amazing, everyone says constantly i can't stop playing around with it (so true).
The only negative i have is battery life. Due to my constant use it drains very very quickly. But i think i'll be able to fix that.

I see you're from the Netherlands. Could you confirm we are still on 14.1.G.1.518 firmware? It seems everyone who has been able to upgrade to 534 firmware has far better camera results, yet I cannot update to this new firmware, still stuck on the old one. I'd love to update the firmware to get better camera results but I do not want to root this phone. I'm on Vodafone RED 4G btw, dunno if it mathers.. Thanks.

I am. I can confirm I didn't get any updates on my unlocked Z1. I updated to 534 manually via flashtool though. (doesn't void warranty) I have no idea why we don't get the updates pushed to our phones.
thought i'd give my 2 cents here as i have been seeing a lot of negative comments, especially from people who judge way too quickly. Back when the Z came out i followed it madly and already had it on pre-order but i ended up getting a htc one. Ive had this phone for 2 days now and compared to my htc one it is a definite improvement. The only thing im getting used to is the size of the phone, i have small hands so you can imagine its not a 1 handed affair, but you cant fault the build quality, i love the fact that sony puts its own screen and back panel protector on (remember the x10). Call quality is amazing i have to say, loud and clear. performance is amazing, i can see the improvements in the chipset s800 has over s600 (was in my htc one), in real life you wont notice it too much but its defo there, games run amazing no lags and hits a very good fps (wild blood, real racing 3 in particular looks and plays amazingly). I've not really played with the camera much but its better than my htc one, that was the only thing i was disappointed with that phone. Now i have been constantly messing about with the phone so cant really give an accurate example of battery life, but what are you supposed to expect from a phone specc'd like this, yes it has a bigger capacity battery, it also has a big screen and a powerful cpu too, if i get a full days use out of it il be happy.
The Z1 is easily the best phone ever built. Its so nice to hold and use. Definitely my favourite phone to date and I have owned nearly all the previous flagship phones from most companies.
Absolutely blown away by this phone it's just amazing for me.

Xperia Z1 music video
Hi,
I'm totally new to android and the Z1 is my first personal android phone. My expectations where so high coming from many years of All iPhones.
I don't want to start a flame but yes I think android is a little behind (in some aspects) to ios7 BUT this device is actually freaking awesome and looks to me the only one that can beat the iPhone quality.
- High quality. When you touch it you feel that your money are well spent.
- The camera (if we consider is a phone) Is just super good.
- The Sony rom doesn't make me sad as and in a hurry to grab a random 3th party rom
- Display is super good colors looks real and rich. Yes view angles are not awesome but only crazy people use the phone in that way. One thing that NO ONE MENTION is that any phone is close to the iPhone under the sun. Surprise surprise according to phone arena the Z1 is in 2 place. That's for me means A LOT more than insane view angles. The only difect so far is the black. The display show (only in some circumstances) one of the lightest black on the market. You'll may notice it watching a movie (a dark one) in a dark room.
- screen protector: isn't so fragile as many said but yes isn't olephobic
Am I satisfied? A lot!!!!

My personal experience with z2 tablet and yours?

Hello. I've owned this tablet for nearly 4 months and I think i can now give a brief of my personal experience but i would also like some others opinions.
Firstly, I would like to mention that I've not regretted buying this device from the moment i unpacked it and still going. It's an absolute pleasure.
The design is brilliant, it looks so damn premium and feels it too. The weight doesn't bother me and it feels nice to hold. Even better after i received the 'poetic graph grip' rubber case. This case feels premium as the rubber texture and quality is so great. Anybody who doesnt like a flip case should definitely invest in one of these.
Onto the tablet performance, it is practically flawless. In every aspect. The speed of app switching and the animations is smooth and with hardly any noticable delay. Scrolling is just as smooth. I have noticed no graphical glitchery of the sorts. So it's speed overall is amazing.
The battery life, considering the speed i mentioned above, is some sort of sorcery indeed. I get roughly 1 hour SOT per 10% battery life and it doesn't seem be affected by how I'm using it much. I could be playing games, watching video or browsing facebook. The difference between those uses and the impact is almost negligible. As in there's no real impact. And I'm a heavy user. No I dont use battery saving modes either. When this battery cycle is done I'll add screenshots to this post.
The display quality is stunning and the colour reproduction is near damn perfect. I did slightly adjust the rgb ratio marginally to get a slightly brighter white by increasing the blue and green by 10 each. I like that i have this option. Sony likes this too, they know someone that buys a sony is very likely keen on the display so they make sure not to miss a trick there. Great job.
Next is the sony software. Okay here i have to admit that I'm not a big sony app user. Firstly sonys gallery and movies apps don't seem to like my sdcard and i have no idea why. So I have quickpic, mxplayer and es file explorer. They all work flawlessly. But i am sad that i can't make 100% use of sonys best apps
They are all beautiful though, so it can be said that there's nothing wrong with them at all if you use the devices built in storage.
Bravia and xreality really pack a punch and nobody does it well as sony. These should be taken full advantage of.
I like the rest of the apps such as social life, lounge, remote, sketch, smart connect and even sony select is pretty good. Of course im going to use third party apps, thats why i chose android. But for once, this brand of built in apps really has everything it should have and they're splendid too. I feel guilty that i don't use them frequently enough.
I don't know what else to say really, this device is pretty magical.
Oh and I'm still using stock 4.4.2, with towel root. It failed the update because it can't be verified im guessing because i rooted it. I'm scared to update it anyway, it works too well and i know from my experiences that if something works perfectly just leave it as it is.
What are others opinions? Do you think my review is correct?
I rushed the post and no I'm not going to correct my grammar and punctuation, even though i could. Just read it.
There's no reason you shouldn't buy it if you're looking for a good tablet. Sony really deserves a pat on the back. Looking forward to my next sony device.
Oh and f**k Samsung. Never will i buy a samsung again. Ugly piece of bloated laggy trash.

Hello. I've owned this tablet for nearly 4 months and I think i can now give a brief of my personal experience but i would also like some others opinions.
Firstly, I would like to mention that I've not regretted buying this device from the moment i unpacked it and still going. It's an absolute pleasure.

I'm a Samsung guy through and through...........
............ Or at least I was until a week ago.
I have had Samsung for years now and although I have tried other brands I always seem to go back to Samsung.
Well, last week I swapped our lass my Galaxy S4 for her Xperia Z2. I was going to trade it in by the second day for another Samsung, but she talked me into persevering with it a little longer....... and I'm so glad she did!. It's big, it's very square, but now I'm used to it I actually like it. I prefer it over the Samsung for the fact that Sony don't force loads of bloatware on you. The screen is great, the camera is fantastic! and battery life is amazing compared to any Samsung I have had.
So what has the Z2 phone got to do with a review of the Z2 tablet???........... Nothing........but.....
I always have a tablet to match my phone. So now I am used to the Z2 I plan on trading my Note 10.1 and Nexus 10 to get the Z2 tablet.
It's just bloody typical, when I didn't want the Z2 tablet our local secondhand shop had a couple in. But now I actually want one, they have none!.
I have had it 6 Months. I did buy the official sony case but generally use it without it, except when im out and about. Holding it now without a case it feels great as it always did since the first time I bought it. Slim as hell, but confident I could drop it and still recover. Its an odd design with wide bezzels but keeps me from tapping on the sides. Camera is bad, and that is the only negative I have. But who uses a tablet to take pics. I reackon when it gets lollipop im sorted for a tablet for the next year, im a techo geek and like to keep up to date, but dont see myself upgrading this for a while, and I think that says alot. It has never let me down and has done everything I ask of it in the last 6 months, so im staying with it, and will invest in a nice sony phone aswell.
Im a bit disappointed with mine but the fault of the first 2 fall on to bell
1. My bootloader is locked (made the mistake of buying through a carrier) which leads me to two
2. Unable to customize with roms/kernel
3. The bezels make it hard, even impossible to shop for universal 10" cases
4. The battery for me isn't what i thought it would be, an hour of use it drops 15-20 %
Other then those, everything is great, performence, display, sound(with headphones)
Things would be different if i was able to unlock my BL... Now I am happy to have root and some control of the stock kernel at least.
If your battery is dropping 15-20% a hour, you're doing something wrong. {Except you're gaming, then it's perfectly normal.) This device is really battery efficient, 10% per hour is normal.
Use Stamina Mode, and look whether there are apps in the background which consume battery. Tame them by deactivating (with Titanium Backup) or by using Greenify/Amplify.
For the case, simply get the Sony case. It's perfectly fine.
And you don't need ROMs or kernels on this device. Stock ROM + Root + Xposed is perfectly fine, looks good and has by far the best battery life.
So just enjoy!
Hey guys I've been looking for a tablet for a while now that fits my needs. I'm thinking the Z2 Tab is the way to go, beautiful design, big enough and backed by Sony who are known for timely updates.
Now I've never owned a Sony Device and I've had a look in the forums... What's the deal with rooting and such? Most threads seem to point towards the 'Sony cross-device forum' and I'm a bit confused. I've only owned LG and Samsung devices and they both seemed to have more device specific Development...
I really like of this tablet. All most every single aspect of it is really good.
But my real problem with it is touch screen. It's the worst touch screen have been used. I update to last version and it is really batter but still with minor problems. My LG G2 has a really better touch screen than this tablet. What do you think about it's touch screen? These minor problems are common on other tablets ? I tried a Ipad 2 and the touch is really amazing.
Excellent tablet
I must agree with the original post, this is really an awesome tablet.
My wife has always gone with apple, both for her phone and ipad. The rest of my family and friends are all hard core Samsung or Apple users. At the beginning of the year I got an Xperia V phone, which was taken from me a month later when I was attacked walking my baby. A friend gave me his Samsung Galaxy to use. But I really loved the experience with the Sony, and being able to use it outdoors in sand and water. So when it came time to use my book and equipment allowance at work I put it towards a Sony Z2 tablet. I am really happy with the decision. After updating to 4.4.4 I find the touchscreen no longer gives issues, and while the camera performance is sub-par, it doesn't really bother me as using it for voip and anything esle other than a DSLR works great!
A big thumbs up to sony, and to all the xda developers that help us use this device the way we want to!
I just ordered mine, the 32 gig lte version, I decided to get this over the shield and a 128gig ipad air because I like sony products and hope this is as good as it looks.
You wont be disappointed.
I got this earlier this month. I had immediate buyers regret day one because the screen was being iffy. I also almost never used it that day because I was chatting and its a pain in the butt to type on a tablet.
Then day 2 rolled around. I was amazed by the battery life (10% for every 1 hr SOT) and how amazing the Sony Music, Video and Phones apps were. The only problem was its inability to play audio on mkv files. The audio booster was another thing that made a huge difference. By far the best.
The screen almost never gets glitchy anymore (thank god). If it does it goes away after turning the screen off and on. The color reproduction was fantastic.
They only downside to this was some of the built in sony apps i cant uninstall. I think people can make good use of them. Just not for me. Also wish they would give some freebies from their media store for buying a $450 purchase

My first tablet purchase ever, so not much to compare with cept for the ipads we get at work (yawn). It works a treat so far, keeping it stock 4.4.4 for the moment, tho I look forward to removing the bloat. I wasn't able to play hearthstone on my phone so it's taken up most of my initial testing hah. I've noticed a rare slight creak from the back panel somewhere to the right and I think I read another review saying the same. And I know it's certified water resistant, but it could finally get to me, having to pick out the tab every time I want to charge or connect to the PC. I've had zero freezing, lag etc runs cool as a cucumber. Not like my galaxy note that can heat up just as good as my microwave.

The only real issue I've experienced with my tablet is the touch issue, no creaking or anything and it froze once, but other than that it's run awesome and it plays hearthstone fantastically
I do have a touch issue with icons on the home screen, especially if they're positioned close together.

I just get an issue where touches aren't resisted, for instance in heath stone when I drag a card it drops like I let go but my finger is clearly still there, turning the screen on and of again fixes it

Does the Wifi version play Hearthstone just as well as LTE version, and why would LTE be 'better'? What version Z2 do you have?

Game would play the same, WIFI AND LTE are just different technologies for connecting to a network. It'd only be if you had a poor connection through either, because you must log online to play.

Yup the device certainly has touch issues as from the general concensus.
Mine has too. The screen will lose feedback while you drag things. It doesnt happen always but its more than enough to break the immersion.
Yeah ive got the z2 tablet and what Sony has achieved is great.
What is dissapointing however is the range of Android apps for the device.
Or should i say android tablets in general. An iPad provides better valute to the consumer, and until the ranger of apps available drastically improves im regretting the choice of eco system rather than sony itself.
