i9505 Color issue - black isn't black on some devices - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
i bought a I9505 16 GB in germany and after some hours of testing i found an
issue with the screen color. It seems that the black color (OLED pixel should
set to off) aren't set to off. The color looks like black with 5 % red brown and you
can see it in dark ambience with large black area (e.g. ScreenTester )
I changed the device to another one and saw the same problem. But this time i get
an OTA update. After the update (the last for germany i think MDM ) the problem
is gone. Ok now i know that the problem isn't a not fixable hardware problem or
only a software problem...
i startet some test...(i didn't change modem and csc)
1) flashed a costum recovery -> black isn't black in CWM and Touch
1.1) created a backup from stock rom
2) flashed CM 10.1 (build from 19.5) -> black isn't black
3) restore backup from stock rom -> black is black
4) flashed a the omega rom 3.0 -> black isn't black
4.1) flashed the adam kernel 1.2 (with update 1 from samsung) -> black is black
-> The fix/cause for my problem is placed in the kernel.
Maybe the kernel developers can check what are the differencies between
the kernels and update the kernel sources from modded stock Kernels, CM,
CWM and so on...
big thx

its a known bug and you have to update your firmware to the latest version to fix this. i had this bug earlier and after an OTA update its fixed, it never showed up even with custom kernels(9500), not sure whether the kernel sources for 9505 has the fix included...

mhm, so it seems that many kernels sources which are used in cwm, touch recovery and CM doesn't include the fix.
Is the fix delivered by samsungs update 1? because the adam kernel which use this update doesn't have the bug.
thx.

Is there anyone having some (lines hardly visible) at screen color with grey backround and lowest brightnes st dark room??

I had this issue back in 2011 with my Nokia C7. It used to go purple on greys while dimming. Never got the issue solved. I doubt we will ever get a solution. This is just a characteristic of the AMOLED.

Not sure about that - but I wouldn't take notice of the blotches/lines you can see in dark room low brightness. And from what I gather it's gotten much less worse on S4

i have this same issues is it normal?

Color Calibration ( Blue tint fix :) ) - Needs some work though

Have a look (not my work, just wanted to share)
This little fix lets you adjust the colors, so I thought you would be interested.
It does seem to screw up the camera (only white preview) , but other than that it works great
howto: flash the zip in CWM and then install the apk...
so when the camera bug gets sorted it would be awesome

isn't that what Supercurio's Voodoo Color does ?
where can I acces the voodoo color settings?
I use darkys rom (9.3) and voodoo should be included but I only find an Voodoo control app which adjusts the sound but not the color.
In CWM I can only adjust lagfix settings?
You can use Galaxy Tuner for that.

the Voodoo Control App includes the settings
you only need to switch to a kernel which includes newest Voodoo Color changes
(dunno if it exists for 2.2* kernels though)
Well I just installed the latest Voodoo kernel (5.4.1) but no changes
If I'm not wrong that voodoo colour app only apply to nexus s.. Not available for 2.2..

Apparently non of these works for us, so we're stuck with the bluish screen

from what I can gauge from all this, is that certain parts (screens) used by Samsung were not capable of screen variations in/for later builds as such they totally declined further upgrades for all. This would be common in manufacturing the initial device (galaxy S) as trial and error would play a part in releasing the most cost effective product and the part used coming from different sources. The Galaxy S had 20 versions, meant for different locations and pricing, so the componaents would be from from various sources, some of top quality and others of lower grade going to lower priced models meant for third world locations.
so it may be wise to see when and where this models having blue screen problems are cropping up most.

That's a very interesting thinking.
I just found out that this problem appears to be a known issue which is caused from incorrect calibration data which exists in some devices and affected by cyanogenmod 9+ (the later 9 ROMs, some of the older don't have this issue)
I think I'll post a new thread to help people understand this problem and its origin, and in the same time I might ask them their model and location, according to your great suggestion.
Thanks again!

bluish screen - dark blue tint / hue after flashing AOSP ICS and above on GT-I9000

There's a known problem for a little amount of Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 devices that are getting bluish screen after flashing AOSP Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.x) and above.
By bluish screen I mean that there's a dark blue color, a blue tint / hue all over the screen.
This bluish screen appears everywhere in the ROM, in the recovery, and even when charging the phone while it's off.
According to DerTeufel1980 and pawitp, this issue is caused by the updated framebuffer driver of the Nexus S in the CyanogenMod 9 kernels, and the actual problem is that some devices contain incorrect calibration data.
I posted a thread in which I summarize all I know about this issue.
This issue is fixed thanks to pawitp.
We can flash this fixed CyanogenMod 11 nightly.
Any release from now on will be updated with this fix.
There are detailed instructions in pawitp's thread - [NIGHTLY][ROM][4.4] CyanogenMod 11 for Samsung Galaxy S
This is the official thread of CyanogenMod 11 in this forum.
Please note that in CyanogenMod's download site we should flash any version that is newer than cm-11-20140211-NIGHTLY-galaxysmtd.zip which was posted today, the 11.02.2014, at 04:51:57 (according to the "Date Added" column in the download site)
I'd like to appreciate pawitp for his willing to help and for his truly tremendous effort to the community.
Thanks a lot!

Colors on Android 2.3.4

After updating to 2.3.4, I notice that (to my eyes anyway) the colors seem to have been adjusted again. As we all know, Google messed with the color temperature in 2.3.3 to the chagrin of many. Complaints of yellow screens abounded. Mine had a slightly yellow tint to it as well, however it seems gone with 2.3.4.
I have always felt the best, most accurate colors available on the Nexus S were achieved with Voodoo. It appears that 2.3.4 matches it.
Are my eyes deceiving me, or are the colors really better? Anyone agree?
removed i was wrong
Something definitely seems different. Maybe a little brighter.
removed i was wrong
i couldn't tell any difference from 2.3.3. they look more natural, perhaps with a very (and i do mean very) slight blue tint. the whites are in-your-face as before, but i found it really difficult to read the browser before, now, it's not so bad.
The colours have changed, are better and look more vibrant. I'm happy again.
I have 2.3.4 and my yellowish tint is still here. Not a major concern to me but just figured I would share.
Yellow tint is still there. No difference in colour temperature.

Colors did not change.
However, I think the colors on 2.3.3 were fantastic, so.... you might not value my opinion much anyway

Display issues still not solved
I wonder when they will fix this issue.
I want the yellow tint to be removed. From what I read voodoo kernel fixes the issue. So I have 3 questions. Can somebody answer them?
1. Is it possible to root without wiping data?
2. Can I flash voodoo kernel on 2.3.4?
3. To test voodoo kernel do I need to root the phone?

I agree with this too. They're more natural this way. Yea, even though they've lost their saturation, but that's the whole point.
Until someone shows me a side by side comparison I am standing by my statement "the screen colour definitely changed" other than that, I don't know because I cannot really tell that well, I cannot say for the better or for the worst, please does anyone have two Nexus S devices to compare?

It's not true. You do not need to compare devices side by side. You only need to look at the source code which DID change between 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 but DID NOT CHANGE between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4.

When i bought my galaxy i was very impressed from its colorfull screen and especially it's black color.
Now after 1.5 years i think that my screen isn't that cool.As for the black colors when i see an image with different shades there are some strange colors like grey or "pixeled" colors.I don't know if you understand what is my problem but i want to fix it somehow.I tried voodoo color but the same thing happenes.Only if i reduse the
colors from voodoo control the screen gets better but then i have no brightness...Any help or settings about this?I have used many roms including gb(cm7) and ics(simply ,icssgs, and aokp) and many kernels and i have always the same problem.
Screen burn-in . Happens if your brightness is too high, or a pixel shows the same color for a longer time. Normal after 1.5 years.

Gpad screen gamma is too low

Some of you may have noticed it's difficult to watch dark scenes in movies on the gpad. I think the problem is the gamma calibration, you can see it clearly on the pictures I took.
https://imageshack.com/i/nf96iaj
On the top you can see my nexus 7 2013, you can differentiate all the shades of grey from 1% white to 100%.
On the gpad, everything is solid black from 1% to 12% of white.
You can find the original image here : http://imageshack.us/f/594/6291.png/
How low can you go, on your gpad, before the grey melts with the black ?
Do you know an app to apply gamma correction ?
Here you can see the same picture on the N7 and the gpad. You can't even distinguish the guy's ear on the g pad.

I see the difference, and I knew it was there already also.. I'm sorry, but apparently gamma is not something that is doable. - I was looking to link you the app from market called "Screen Adjuster", however you want to look at this description, especially the last sentence. ;/
- dimming the screen 15-100% (below minimum system brightness)
- screen color and a contrast adjustment
- system brightness 0-100% adjustment
- functional widget (on/off, system brightness, settings)
- autorun option
Some phones have a color tint screen. This app have a possibility to try to improve colors on this kind of the screen by setting an additional factor RGB.*
The range of the dimmer is from 15% to 100% (it allows to dim the screen below a min system brightness value). Make a relief for your eyes during a nightly reading.
Furthermore, you can change fast the system brightness too.
The additional contrast factor can try to make the reading or a picture viewing more comfortable on some screens.*
The widget provides fast on/off service with a shortcuts to the Adjuster settings and the system brightness settings.
The application has the autorun option which works with the dimmer set above 22% (for the safety).
Note
A gamma adjustment is not possible to do.
You can of course try and download the app anyways and see if contrast or brightness will do anything for ya.
- In case you do download the app, remember that setting contrast low will result in problems with installing apps, as in you cannot hit Install, only cancel. To avoid this, open up Screen Adjuster and turn it off, install the app and turn it back on afterwards. It's something about lowering the settings to lower than what is "intended", I don't quite understand it and I find it rather odd. But it let's you install apps.. So I guess hooray.
That's all I got.

Thank you for your response, but I'm already using screen adjuster. I set the contrast at -25 and it helps a lot to see dark details.
Unfortunately, it has two side effects :
- it brightens the dark shades of grey, but also the black levels.
- I noticed that the contrast setting also affects the white making it look like light grey.
So the contrast setting in screen adjuster doesn't affects only the dark tones like it would on a monitor or a tv, it affects the contrast ratio.
I've found apps to make gamma adustment but it only works on some devices with custom kernel.

Yea, I was about to say that gamma can be done but only on custom kernels. Lot of Nexus 5 stuff on the market. Apparently it's Google who locked the gamma settings completely down but only in 4.4.2. I guess it may work on stock LG Kernel since it's only 4.2.2? I'm afraid we'll have to wait for some kernel support for other roms. That would be awesome. I really hope for some Franco-kernel-glory on this device.
That's what I thought, we need to wait for custom kernels...I hope it will come soon, because it's so frustrating to have such a good screen with bad calibration !
People tends to complain too much about the warm white balance but the gamma calibration is far more concerning.

Hi there Young Bobbie, I am new to posting on XDA so I couldn't post this in your kernel developer page. This is my first post on any forum page ever. First off, thank you very much for your hard work to make this kernel happen to correct gamma on the v500. I have been sitting on the fence whether to get the gpad, and if i would get the v500 or the v510. Was leaning toward the v510 because of Sleekmason's wonderful kernel work, but it's exciting that we have now have the same options available for the v500. I noticed this was working fully with the Malladus ROM. My question to you was whether or not this worked with stock LG ROM as well? Thank you again YoungBobbie and Sleekmason for your time and creations.
Sorry, just answered my own question. Guess it helps to read the very first line of the page (making fun of myself now ;-P) Thank you again YoungBobbie and sleekmason!!!

HTC One (M9) Colour Control Screen Settings

Hello!
My first thread on XDA Developers.
I've been a lurker on these forums for some time having used various custom ROMs and kernels for Windows Mobile, Windows Phone 7 and now Android. I've mostly been a big advocate of Samsung gear until they decided to release the S6 with no storage expansion as this is what I looked for in any phone I upgraded to. This led me to buy the HTC One M9. The community so far has been great with custom ROMS and Kernels with the limited sources provided by HTC so I figured I would give something back to the HTC One M9 community.
Now it has been said that the HTC One M9 screen is not as great as it could be and is in fact a downgrade compared to the M7 and M8. This is mostly due to the fact the screen is calibrated very "cool" (8500k) temperature. With that in mind I just used my X-Rite i1Display Pro to get the white point to D65 (aka 6500k) and succeeded within a few minutes.
The settings I have are for the HTC One M9 UK EE gold/gold edition but I'm sure the settings can be used on other variants from other network providers in other countries too as it will at least get you close to D65 for more accurate colour reproduction on the screen.
I guess I've said a lot so I'll shut up and share the settings with you - please note I've used the colour control aspect of the custom kernels available to make the changes.
Ew that's crazy yellow lol. Try mine
I forgot to mention the rest of the saturation, value, contrast, hue need to be set to their default.
Considering my settings are not working on yours Reubenskelly1992 and yours are VERY blue, even more so than what I had out of the box on my M9, could it be there's a much bigger variation in screen quality?

Maybe we need to compare Serial Num mine begins with FA53HYJ and @skeet94 setting are very close to what i have found works
My blue setting has to be at 230 or it's way too blue
I found this to determine what the serial number means
http://droider.eu/2014/12/20/how-to-know-where-your-htc-phone-was-made/
mine = Taiwan 2015 / March / 17
What Kernel are you guys using?
Where do I find color settings? Or are you guys using any special app?

LeeDroid Kernel >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/rom-leedroid-one-m9-v7-0-0-rc1-march-t3068468
and the Color Control app > http://downloads.codefi.re/savoca/kcal
Kernel Adiutor in the play store also has these settings
Info: If you boot into Download mode and choose System Info you can find your LCD
Mine is LCD: TDI_RES_69338
I have tried many different settings taken from the forum. But I think the most similar to the setting of M8 (maybe not the preferred for many) is mine, for now. Try it, tell me what you think.
At what brightness do you calibrate the colors at? Does it matter?

LeeDroid added a Brightness patch here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60639310
It seems to have helped the look of my kcal settings. I turn off auto brightness and set mine too about 55% (2 clicks in the quick setting toggle)
These are my settings I use with ex app. Gives me a little more saturation and darker blacks
flar2 has added the color control for the stock kernel here >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/mod-color-control-t3104598
you will still need custom recovery and root to use it
ViperOneM9 1.6.0 has added the RGB color control also.
To get everyone up to speed @LeeDroid added this feature about 2 weeks ago and their seem to be 2/3 different set of settings that bring the display up to the M8 standard.

Would you guys mind posting which LCDs each of you have for your recommended settings? I'd imagine these settings only work with specific screens.

On general these should work and it's a guideline so every device may be slightly different but probably just a little bit of tweaking
