Auto sync question. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does turning off syncing under your Google account stop syncing from occurring completely? Or will it still sync when I run the application itself etc. Would like to turn auto syncing off yet still be able to sync.

You'll still be able to sync. Just turn auto sync off and for example, open the Gmail app. There's a refresh button at the top if you want to sync.

You'll also have to keep in mind that most email accts added to the native email app will be able to sync when you choose to, but an Exchange server acct might not be happy.

3rd party email problem

Hey everyon, so through my email app I hve my hotmail account syncing up to it. The problem I have is that when I receive an email and delete it from my phone, it does not delete it from my email account. I only check my email by computer every couple of days so its a PITA to delete a couple hundred emails when I do get on a computer. Does anyone else experience this and if so is there a work around or a free app that will sync my email and delete them from the server as well as my phone

Probably because I've had the email account for years before I had the phone, hell i'vehad th account before there was gmail. I understand that it is a google phone and that Gmail works better with thr phone but With over 200 email contacts I can't just drop my hotmail account.

First off, I don't have experience with your senarion.
That said, have you checked any settings on the phones email app nd hotmail for this problem? Also, do the emails that don't get deleted appear read? Or they unread?

If you go into the email app, then 'Settings->Incoming server settings->Delete email from server', you can change it from 'Never' to 'When I delete from Inbox', although I have had mixed results with this actually working on my Hotmail account. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

How to turn off push for gmail accounts

I would like to change to for example 'every 15mins'. The 3 accounts all being pushed is taking its toll on my battery.

Ehhh... the whole idea of "push" is that new emails are pushed from the server. As opposed to your phone "pulling" them from said server. So no, you cannot. Even switching off sync will not impact your receiving emails on gmail.
However, there are apps out there (search for it) that will enable your data connection and/or sync function periodically. This one you can set for 15 mins, 1 hour, or whatever the app offers and you want.

I'm pretty sure if you disable gmail sync you don't get emails anymore through the stock gmail app at least.

Actually, you can switch off push, IF you start using the moto blur corporate email. Lookup the settings for active sync, it uses the microsoft exchange method for email access, and also syncs calendar and contacts. Once setup, open the account through messages, and turn off push. I did this, and my battery life tripled.

SGT will not sync gmail

Title says it all. I have tried everything I have found in this forum with no luck. Basic problem is I have to click refresh in gmail to recieve my email. I am not rooted and my htc evo and desktop all work flawlessly and notify me about new emails. Any ideas would be helpful.

Go to settings / accounts and sync / and verify you dont have any red icons on the gmail account. If you do there are normally error why. You can also ensure you have mail checked to synchronize as well as contacts.
That is the first step that comes to mind. If you have not already, delete amd readd the acct. You will want to play close attention when setting back up the settings on each setup page. You may have set sync frequency to manual or something.

I have deleted the account and deleted the data from the gmail app under manage applications. I have checked and unchecked the sync setting many times. Each time I re check the gmail sync it syncs fine and if I have a new email it will notify me but after that if I get an email I get no notification on my SGT unless I click refresh in the app or uncheck then re check sync.

Do you have any other Android devices? If so, do they sync correctly?
Do you have any type of authentication set in gmail?
Have you tried a factory reset?
Are you using the gmail app and not the email app?
Do Google Talk notifications work correctly?
Sorry if some of these questions sound dumb, but better to cover all bases before moving on.
Awe good point.... I think he is using the email app vs the gmail app. I dont think the notification option mentioned is available in the gmail app.

Trust me they are not dumb questions I did tech support for a few years... It is just sad when you have to ask "Is the computer plugged into the wall socket?" Anyway yes I have an HTC EVO the gets the IMAP push just fine as does my desktop running Chrome. I have just a regular single password set up for gmail. I have not done a factory reset yet. I am using the gmail app. I dont use google talk but google voice notification work. The voice notifications are not IMAP but set on a timer ever 15 minutes however.
I had this same problem and tried everything toto make it work. I never got it fixed, so I did a factory reset and it works fine now.
Thats what I am thinking of trying. Wish it could be simpler though. :\

I think i had this once.... But a delete and readd fixed it. Do you have your gmail setup to backup your apps and bookmarks to chrome? You can also use mybackup pro to backup other on device media and OS settings. =)

Just tried a factory reset and the problem remains. Could my router be blocking the push. Chrome gets the push fine on the same router I use the extension "Google Mail Checker" I am out of Ideas.
Try restarting your router just in case.
I don't know if this applies to your issue? http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google Mobile/thread?tid=3a06c995ce0f82ae&hl=en
Yep that is the same problem I am having. That page was my first try for a fix before posting. I went through all of those steps and it didnt resolve the issue thats when I posted here. I am begining to think I am just out of luck.

Completely disabled firewall on my router and boom it works. WOOT! Do you know what port # IMAP could be using different than what chrome is using.
Re enabled firewall still working. Beats me. :-|

Very odd. Would think a router would come out of the box ready to support email protocols.

Gmail not syncing...

Seems that ever since I bagan using ROM's on my N7 I have been unable to automatically sync my gmail. This is the 3rd one that I've tried. Ensured that all settings are set up correctly (Gmail sync and Email notifications on) and of course my GNex has no issues retrieving email. I can manually tell it to sync and it will, but otherwise nothing. Tried deleting the account and restoring and not seeing any change. Also cleared the cache and nothing changed. Anyone else have this issue?
Since yesterday I have the same issue. I had to reinstalla the rom on my phone, restore all the apps with TB, everything works but the mail even if it is checked sync they don't sync...the same for calendar too. I have to manual sync.
Tried delete account, uncheck e check sync, delete cache , delete update and redo update...nothing seems work...I really don't know what to do...
Try putting the power widget on your homescreen and press the sync button on the widget. It sounds stupid but ive had to do it once in a while.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
My power widget doesn't have any "sync" button, just wifi, brightness, rotation and bluetooth...I have an ICS rom...
I notice if I take a look in the google account settings, even if the email is sync checked the time of syncing doesnt cheange, it is the last I manually sync...

Settings - account - Google - click on your email, make sure your Gmail account/sync is checked.
Yes it is... But I saw not only Gmail is not sync, but also calendar, drive ecc., this mean there is a problem with Google account sync... Time of last sync is when I manually sync...
I also notice the wifi icon, when I'm connected to wifi is gray and no blue...I remeber it was blue when the google account was working...
Honestly I'm really confused... Don't know what to do...
UPDATE: I saw I cannot access to my google talk...I'm offline, I try to turn on but very quick windows and then it keep offline...

Exchange Service wakelock killing my battery

Hi, I moved from a Galaxy Nexus 2 weeks ago.
I'm running the lastest CM 10.1 Nightly and Franco Kernel.
Like I week ago I noticed a very high wakelock caused by "Exchange Service". I'm using my Hotmail account configured as Exchange with the stock email android App.
I didn't have that wakelock before with my SGN or the first week using my N4.
I don't know what to do, I have tried deleting the account and setting the update interval to 1 hour.
Any ideas?
This is making me crazy
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Check this out:
It goes to deep sleep, but there are some wakelocks made by:
Calendar, Exchange and Gtalk (Which is strange as I have it frozen using TIBU).

This is what happens when people have too much information at their finger tips.
I see 3mins and 6 mins of wakelocks there in 10hrs? How is that "killing" your battery?

Sorry but I still think there is something wrong.
494 wakelock ? With push email off? It was supposed to check the email each 2 hours. No contact and calendar sync.. OK all the wakelocks were "only" 12 minutes... I had it configured in the same way with my gnex and never had this problem.
Thanks.

I understand your point.. But I was sure that before (using my gnexus and the first week using my n4) I had the same configuration and I wasn't getting these wake locks. Remember push it's not active ! And gmail (sync is on) and whatsapp are running all the time and they don't generate almost any wakelocks...

Sorry guys but I think there must be something wrong here.
It's only syncing one account and the refresh rate is set to 1h!!! I get barely 10 emails daily and don't reply them.
It looks like there is a mistake in the configuration of exchange and it ends in a loop.
Plus I don't even use the calendar, I have like 10 entries in all the year!! It doesn't make sense.
I use whatsapp 10 times more than email and calendar combined and I don't see it generating so mane wake locks.

Same problem here. I have my work Outlook exchange server setup. I have sync set to NEVER so I have to open the app manually to get new emails....I still have 30+ minutes of exchange services wakelocks.
What is going on? This never used to be an issue

I was thinking of doing that. Forwarding all my emails to my gmail account. This is a serious problem. As you say we get wakelocks (a lot of them) even with hot mail sync off!! Wtf
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I was able of removing the wakelock doing the following:
Using titanium backup made "exchange services" a user app.
Added to greenify
BUT the only problem is that now I have to open the email app to get my emails.. Trying to avoid this with tasker but tasker doesn't work with processes like exchange service.
Battery life has improved!!

It's not just you
It's not just you. Something is definitely wrong.
I have had this problem since ICS 4.0 on my Nexus S.
I've tried stock and am now running CM 10.1. This morning my stock battery stats show 3h 17m on battery and Exchange Services with 1h 5m of "Keep awake". Battery is down to 58%. That makes the battery life about 6 hours. Yesterday, I got 14.
This problem goes away every time I flash a ROM update, but will always recur after a few weeks. If I disable sync, everything is fine. It doesn't seem to matter whether the Exchange Sync setting are set to Email, Calender, or Contacts. It also doesn't seem to matter how often sync is set for: push, 30 min, 1 hour, or 3 hours -- the problem still persists unless sync is off in the OS.
I would love suggestions on what to do.
