29 Days with the HTC One - One (M7) General

I had some spare time yesterday between furniture deliveries, so I decided to sort-of-kind-of-not-really review the HTC One.

Hard to believe it, but you topped your 29 days with android last year.
Nice article.

I like it, I like it a lot.

Thanks! It would be cool if I got featured on the front page again, too, though I'm not really expecting it

I, for one, very much appreciate your tldr review of the One X. Now continuing with the article.

Good read. Wish all prospective buyers would read this. I've never had more people compliment me on this device (Whoa, nice phone!) Then, this also means I have a lot of friends who've no idea what the H1 is (marketing).
Thanks.

Great read. Thank you.
I'm actually breaking contract with VZW for T•Mobile and the ONE.

Great read, thanks for sharing! I love my H1 too, it's the best quality device I ever had.

Great article.. Actually i bought a S4, then i change to HTC One. Now i am also having a GREAT phone

Very much enjoyed your review. Thanks.

Nice review, I was in the same boat as you. Got bored of tinkering with custom ROMs (had SGS, SGS2) that never actually had real stability and claimed performance. After some time, lag became too much of a pain, apps would crash, the phone would often become unresponsive...
One is, in my opinion, a mixture of iphone and the best of android. Really lag free OS, fast, stable, nice features, great build, looks, etc.

Good write up but wayyyy too many italicized words.

mee too. so sad

Love the review.
Only thing I disagree with is the camera. I think the One camera is absolutely bonkers when it comes to capturing detail (In a good way). The only thing the SGS4 will have is in good light, stuff in the background will be able to be zoomed in on. I personally prefer the One camera in every picture and video comparison i've seen.
Have to say, the Sgs4 is the biggest samsung let down for me since the SGS2 which was the best smartphone i'd ever used and it absolutely blew me away, even more so than the One has.
The update from the Sgs3 is simply not worth it. The design is worse, the build quality is worse, the phone gets far too hot, far too quickly, it's laggy, and the screen is such a massive let down. I couldn't believe how underwhelmed I felt trying out the SGS4.
HTC One is by far the best phone out, and will probably be the only phone, EVER, that I will manage to keep for the life of a contract, let alone the one month I normally keep phones before swapping them.

Thanks! And yeah, I neglected to mention this aspect of the camera, but that's very true.

Nice article. I mostly agree with you about everything but the ROM. I don't really like the stock ROM. I think the ARHD ROM is more stable and doesn't sacrifice any important features of the stock ROM.
Thank you for your insight once again :good:

NEXUS S?

hi guys,
i'm new to this forum..currently, i'm doing some research for SNS as i'm going to make a choice between this device or other HTC devices. Regrettable choice is intolerable! I was totally confuse really. I heard there are some recognizable problems with SNS such as no LED notification, no fm radios, bad compass and etc. So i would like to ask, whether this phone is worth to grab, and what make it so special compare to other phone?
i'm using a lot of gps for navigation, and i used to sync a lot to fb and my google account, and imap for e-mail is very crucial for me. USB Thetering or bluetooth tethering is available here? i used to chase custom roms when i was with my htc phones before for performance improvement. Sometimes, i made a good time playing games from my phone to release tension. so does this phone still worth for me?
if there's anyone coming from DHD, did you satisfied migrating to SNS?
Thanks
I'm coming from dhd and i am pretty satisfied...
Dhd battery is awful and the screen is really bad too. I really dont care about the fm lack, i never used it in my old phones. And for led notification i use bln and it works just fine.
Dhd is too big, and despite htc's fame for making devices with good materials, i really dont like dhd build construction, my volume button doesn't last three months, also my power button. The speaker is really low and in call volume isn't the best thing either.
I really like my nxs, sure i miss some things from dhd (like the ram amount), but the overall experience is really better...
edit: ah, the thing i really miss is the browser. Nexus browser is simply pathetic when compared to dhd one

Gps is outstanding. All tethering is available. The nexus is a great choice as it seems to do everything better. I came from htc. The pure ginger bread feels like what other phones work towards. The custom roms are the most stable you will find. The phone is sexy with a curved screen and completely blacked out. I use gps every single day and always locks instantly. Over clocking makes it perform better than dual core, with out all the bugs of tegra.(still new) I have no regrets, fits perfect in pocket and sitting down doesn't feel like it will break in the pocket since the phones screen hugs your leg from the curve. Personally the size its great not rediculously large or too small, very classy to show off. And no lag...ever . If you want some extra features go with decks rom, it integrates cm7 features with fantastic bagreet life and a stock feel ..which is a very good thing on the nexus.

Came from a Desire Z and Desire, the NS still feels snappier and gives more battery life. The only thing HTC has a upper hand on is the browser which is the best on any mobile platform! Sense is good but it really bogs down the system, plus it's just pure eye candy especially with sense 3.0

I've had my NS for about 3 months now, and all flaws it had has been fixed.
Since this was my first smartphone, I don't know if my opinion really is of that much weight, but I love my phone, it's simply put amazing.
The screen is incredible.
The build quality doesn't leave anything to be desired.
The ROMs available are awesome.
The... eh screw that, it's just awesome in every aspect.
I can guarantee you this: you will NOT be disappointed.
Oh, and welcome to the NS forums

I didn't come from a Desire HD but I have played with a Desire, and a Desire HD and personally owned a Xperia x10, and a Samsung Captivate...and recently bought an xperia Arc and traded it yesterday for a Nexus S.
The Nexus S is miles better than all the phones I listed above. Its just so fast and smooth...one word that comes to mind is slick. The build quality is amazing, the device is the most comfortable device I have ever used. Calling, texting, and web browsing is amazing and better than all listed above. I love this phone and think you will be very happy with it.
I know from now on the only Android device I will ever own is the Nexus line of phones, and they are googles baby so you'll always be looked after : )
hurrmmmm...sry for bumping up this thread..by the way, currently, I've been looking for i9020 but seems, it was pretty rare in malaysia..and if there is, the price was like +-300 for one amoled screen!! so guys, is it really worth it to aim for amoled, or i could just take i9023 for super clear lcd? hurmm
I also looked into nexus s , coming from desire and all htc bull**** with updates. How is screen in nexus s? Its not gorilla , easy to scratch? Also battery life? What about rom space , can we use all 16 gb or are there partitions? Thanx guys

I think Samsung could have done a better job with the ROM. The SGS II Roms are great and very stable.
Memory Management, Optimization are a few things Samsung needs to improve with the Note. Once thats there, I dont see why this device cant rock even more just out of the box.
I am very curious if ICS will bring our Notes really to a higher level
I love the note too!
The big screen is very handy for surfing and remote PC.
The speed?..... Blazing fast, boot also! (I came from a Galaxy S I9000).

For the record: i love my Note! It's not fair comparing it to gs2 seeing as those ROMs have had a year of polishing and optimizing. Get back to me when note ROMs are as mature and we'll talk.

and with ics it will be another story
Just trying the alpha ics has been amazing and very difficult to go back to gingerbread. When ics does finally get leaked for us it will open up the true capabilities I think. It just brings a level of performance that is near impossible to reach with any amount of tweaking on gingerbread.
that's right... i mean that ics will be better for the battery duration .... with a good ram managment the battery life can be longer
Yeah.. I love my Gnote too.. Captains perogative..

I love it too!! I just have two things to say. First, people who pay 700+ for a phone with problrms have every right to complain about it and instead of being mean to them I feel that we could read the parts we like and ignore the rest. After all, hope boring life would be if everyone had the same opinion.... good god, we would all end up liking some like whoopi goldberg or george bush (dumbya)...
Second (not directed to u). I have ICS on my son's samsung Nexus and the settings actually look like a big step backwards instead of a leap forward. Im actually thinking of leaving 2.3.6 once ICS ever makes it to the Note.
My two cents.
2 things I wished the Note had...
1. More ram...1.5gb would rock.
2. 32gb internal storage..
but it still rocks.
More RAM would be nice, and better battery management. I have rooted and installed a firewall and autorun (to prevent pesky apps popping up whenever they feel like eating some of my battery ), and it now lasts the day. I should not have to root and configure just for a full day's battery IMO, but that is Android all over.
Other than that, it is pretty much the very best phone I have ever used and beats all my previous desires (and creates new ones, of course). Prior to that it was my i-mate Jas Jar with 640x480 screen and full qwerty keyboard. Windows was pants, however, and "inactive sync" finally made me give it up.
My note with a custom noreve case (ordered) and my slim Think Outside full size folding BT keyboard (and mouse if I ever find it again) makes the very best of any smartphone that exists today, IMO!
I came from imate jas jar to HTC hd2 and now the Note. I'm absolutely loving it
I'm just wondering how long I can go before the bug gets to me and I start flashing new roms. I used to flash my HD2 almost every week.

You're right. Though to be fair, mostly people have been arguing with the people who start complaining that this is a bad phone or pretending that the display sucks (in general, not of a particular defective piece).
Like everyone here I love my note a lot too and I'm not complaining mine, m previous phone was a nokia N97mini and it was a disaster, apart from the really sexy yet sofisticated look the entire phone was a mess. Paint coming off every where, tons of random crashes lack of updates and don't get me started about the OS. Just like that the list goes on and on and I don't wanna waste anyone's time but basically I didn't know what I was missing in mobile technology till I got my iPod that's when I realize 'this phone really sucks'. So coming from a very rudimentary phone I can't complain much but I will not deny there is room for improvement like the brightness, I wish I could decrease further than using a different app to decrease it which I realised also cause lack in color quality. I'm really looking forward to ICS hoping it will answer all my prayers

Got my note a few days ago and loving it, too. I was a bit disappointed with the stock software, but after flashing Cassie's XtraLiteRom v8 and JKays mod it performs like it should and is nice to use.
Android could certainly take a few hints from MeeGo on how to build a user-friendly UI, though.
I loooove mine too! but like someone else said it really needs ics, since i come from a gnex(still have it) it's hard to swallow. But the big screen and lte data speed i easily forget about gingerbread!

HTC - Is it really worth it?

Hi folks,
Having been an owner of many HTC's, I just wanted your advice as to whether or not you think it's worth purchasing the HTC One?
I had the One X and wasn't that impressed and ended up selling it and going for the S3, which I like, despite the numerous S-Apps which I never use :/
Anyway, I'm due an upgrade and can't decide what to go for.
HTC One (looks good)
iPhone 5 (I know the 5s or 6 will be out come Sept, but at least iPhone's sell for more on eBay should I want to sell my phone and buy a new one)
Samsung Galaxy S4 (lots of new functions)
I really want to like the HTC One, but the mediocre camera is putting me off :/

if you like your s3 then it makes sense that you will like s4 too, its just the same, only improved.
having said that, i wouldn't rule out the One based on the fact that you didn't like the One X - as I'm sure you have seen, HTC pretty much went back to the drawing board in every single area.
try both.
EDIT. is it worth it? absolutely yes.
i'd go with the gs4. it offers much more than the one and is also faster, with better battery life, and sd card support. I won't even mention the barometer and thermometer lol. But if you like aluminum, go with the one. I personally think the GS4 looks much more minimal and sleeker than the one.

Those are just the things you want a phone needs too have.. Sd card.
The battery is only 300 mah larger then the one but itll definitely has too deal with the software that runs on the phone. So no, the S4 doesnt has a better battery life and yes it has a largerbattery. But it depends on the software.
If like me - and as you have that you dont use the s-functions on the S3, then the S4 has no real advantage over the One, it's just going to be more of the same and a UI that hasnt really changed for years and has apparently take a step back to Froyo.
Iphone 5 - yep good phone, if you want just a phone.
Can you see where I am heading?
Why yes... Mercedes C class and BMW 3 series do look much sleeker and minimalistic as compared to a Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Aventador.
*sigh* PLEASE, let's not make (this into) another comparison thread that might be closed.
Yes, the HTC One is definitely a contender in the slew of smartphones that will be available in 2013. I would suggest looking at the features and reviews of the various phones to find one that will completely suit your needs. Every phone will have pros and cons for different people.
For example, if you're looking at solely camera functions, HTC One will definitely perform better in low light, compared to SGS4 and iPhone 5 cameras. If that is something you look for in a camera, then you should more seriously consider the One. If you want a better all-around camera and don't need or want low-light features, then you should look into other phones.
It's really difficult for anybody to tell you whether the One is worth it for you. Depends 100% on what you look for in a phone, which is different than what the next person wants in their phone.
Pathetic why are Samsung fans trolling our forums is beyond me
Inferiority complex?
The camera is not mediocre but pretty good. If camera is the most important aspect of a phone to you then do your research properly. Try both out, however HTC one is the best phone out there performance is top notch second to none.
Most who own it or tried it have recommended it.
actually GS4 has better performance (fact) better battery life (fact) and is a better phone overall imho.
And you know this because you've been using the gs4 for the last 16 days right?
What do you mean, you haven't got one because it hasn't been released yet?
Oh! You looked at a spec sheet and made assumptions! Silly me. I thought you'd had 16 days of hands on experience. Sorry, my bad.

I tried the HTC One the other day, because i am still debating whether or not to go with that or the S4.
It has a luxurious feeling(htc one) but for me, the way it layed in my hand wasn't totally awesome, then again, never had an aluminum phone.
I find the camera very much overrated, being made up to be the "new shizzle" deffo, but this is the first generation of the new shizzle and i am not all to impressed with quality.
The major turn off for me was the position of the power button, it feels awkward in the top, but then again, might just be me being used to it sitting on the side of it.
Imo though, don't just go with what looks pretty but runs well, a cover can do much to the cheap feeling of the samsung, i know i am getting one on mine, if i decide for the S4

mate..go to the shop and use one..
buy one if you dont like it return it
if your taking out a contract and find out you dont like it..return it and exchange
buy one if you dont like it sell
Theres a lot of ways if you find out you dont like the phone.
asking this sort of question in a device specific forum will give you 90% positive answers to your question and 10% honest ones.
working on the fact that we are easily swayed as people..the 90% will get your attention and the honest ones will be 'thanks but theres more positive comments than yours' type scenario
an honest answer..
iphone 5 if you want everything done for you
samsung gs4 if you liked there other phones in the s range
htc one if you like the way htc have tried new ideas..
This is my viewpoint above. This is neither 10% honest or 90% positive
if i was being real itd be
buy apple if you want to be a sheep and carry a really crap and underachieving phone. Then you can be in the 'in' crowd
Buy an s4 if you dont like htc.
Buy a htc one because i like it so you should as well
forgot to add..
zzzz
To be honest, all I use my phone for is Facebook, watching vids on youtube, taking photos (generally for Facebook). I try not to use it for calls, but people keep phoning me
I'm not entirely sure by the whole 'low light' photo thing as I usually just turn the flash on if it's dark
I like the look of the blink feed on the One too. Looks quite nice and it's about time they updated some if their stuff.
I just hope I don't sign up for the One, and in 2 weeks time the OneA is announce with an 8 Ultapixel camera, because that's part of the reason I gave up with HTC. Too much of the same thing when they should just concentrate on one very good device :banghead:

Several reviewers has made test over a few days or so, where the samsung genereally pulled ahead with round about 1/3 more battery life, which is alot, but well that depends on what they used it for really, it has a lot to do with software, so when the HTC One gets updated to 4.2.2 it might be fixed (one can hope)

HTC One is better IMHO.
Better screen, better materials.
Battery is bigger on the S4 so it should perform better - wooppy-effin-doo.
Performance wise there is not much of a difference and not enough to be a deal breaker for anyone on the fence.

If you use it just for that, well i wouldn't upgrade, it's a better quality photo, but that is just about it what you get with a brighter screen
Several factors to choose this or that phone..
Build quality comes first for me not power. Is why i never owned Samsung phones and stuck to HTC. HTC feel solid, despite the dust under the screen issue they had.
SD or no SD.. To me is not important.
Battery life depends on what power the phone packs.. and also what ROM you put in it if you choose to S=Off and offcourse Dev support
...camera.. if it is important.
I have little hopes for next iPhone.. They fooled me once already upgrading from 4 to 4S a while back which i regretted. I wouldn´t even get the 5 if i knew otherwise. Personally im done with iOS, the iPhones bore the hell out of me.. even when jailbroken.. besides i have an iPad.

How do you like the Sense compared to the stock N4?
I prefer stock, but the new version of Sense really isn't bad. It does not slow the device down like their previous versions did.
I just got my HTC One from AT&T,coming from a Nexus 4. I have to say this is the only phone I could have switched from. The build is superior, new sense isn't bad although I prefer stock JB. But the keyboard is alsoa pleasant surprise on the One.

My Nexus 4 is going on ebay next week. Most overrated phone. I still have my white GNex so I will still get the updates.
Had my HTC one now since became available, moved from N4, still have N4 but so far not been tempted to go back. New sense is pretty good, would like to turn blink feed off but its not intrusive to be an issue. Sound quality is much better through my head phones over the nexus and camera is better. More storage is a bonus too. Over all a much better phone even better if came with untouched android. Main reason I changed is I'm a tech junky and like HTC kit been waiting for them to bring out something of this quality.
Now a Nexus like this... Yes please!

As someone that can't decide between the two lol. I would really like to know peoples impressions
im gonna get it and then sell it when the n5 comes out this fall
If the site stops acting up, I'll be having both phones

This will most likely be my plan as well. I actually ordered the 32gb from HTC last night. After selling my N4, I'll be down about $250 which I'll just consider as an upgrade cost. If the N5 follows the same pricing structure as the 4, I should be able to break almost even when selling/buying.
Hi all, I m on N4 right now and I do like it a lot, will probably give KLP a spin then watch if some CM and co are around on the One, then I ll get rid of it.
My question is regarding the battery?
I know, I know, everyone is different, but the personal habits should more or less carry between phones for one individual, right?
So please give me your impressions regarding this?

From what I've read, the battery life is similar to the N4. One of the reviews also said the One has a really good standby (screen off) battery life, but someone who actually has it will have a better opinion.
Given sufficient funds, I would strongly advise to get the One over the N4. I really hated screen responsiveness, camera and the weird feeling of the glass back. And the speaker on the N4 can't even be compared to the ONE. And Sense has really made a big step forward. As all the others, I like a stock experience, but can completely work with Sense 5.0 in a satisfying way.

Well, N4 is also quite good if I don't use it, but as soon as screen is on, the percentages fly away quite quickly. For example I use my N4 to read a lot, which is not very ressources intensive, but really the battery is going fast!
I m not trying to start an argument, I m simply curious

I feel you, I usually have my N4 plugged in when I'm at my desk, or else the battery will drop pretty fast.

I think the speaker will be my favorite change. If the N4 is in my pocket, I can hardly hear the sound, since the little speaker hole is so easy to get covered up. I'm also willing to get Sense a go, worst case I'll just load a launcher.

Moto X the PERFECT phone!

I am unequivocally saying that after many many phones from the G1 and iphone to all the galaxy's , HTC one all the nexus phones and some nokia lumia's the MOTO X is the best phone I have ever had!
Size= awesome screen to phone size ratio
Screen= Those who complain are nitpicking it is totally indistinguishable from a 1080p without a magnifying glass
Hardware= great quality and build...GO USA
Software= Incredible blend of stock with motorolas great features, I use every single one from Moto Assist, touchless, Moto connect on chrome and especially the awesome Active notifications.
Ergonomics= Best in hand feeling of any phone I have ever had
Camera= My camera is actually pretty stellar I have posted some pics on here shots are crisp and clear. ( Also use the twist to launch quite frequently )
Microphones= easily the best and most clear sounds when on the phone. Speaker phone is really really good also
I have no desire to root and love this phone just the way it is!
Any questions just shoot!
Definitely an awesome phone. Camera is good (thanks to the update) but still not quite as good as the GS4 in my opinion, very close though! The only real thing that keeps it from being perfect for me is the non-unlockable bootloader and thus lack of roms/dev community. While rooting and Xposed Framework is nice (although no longer possible after the software update), I found that it lagged the phone a bit.Coming from a GNex, I'm also gonna miss constantly having the latest software. All that said, as a Verizon user who doesn't want to give up their service... I find this to be the best phone on their network.

Bootloader is a non-issue for me- this phone definitely does not need a custom ROM. I really don't see how it can be improved at all. I use Xposed and at least on my phone, there is ZERO lag. Indistinguishable from bone stock. Even if we had an unlockable bootloader and 1000 ROMs to choose from, I wouldn't even consider flashing one. And I used to flash a new ROM every week on all my other phones. First phone I've ever had where I didn't want to flash.

Agreed. I feel like this is what Google had in mind all along. This is Android the way it's supposed to be.
I have to agree. It feels premium refined and beer functional
I'm with you guys. This phone is so amazing as stock, I have had this phone for over a month now and I am still positively in love with it. I took the update without hesitation, knowing I would lose the ability to root. Every other phone I've had was rooted and completely reconfigured the day I bought it... I am now enjoying a completely different side of Android.
Everything from performance to stability, comfort to battery life is stellar.
I took my wife and kids to the Star Wars yesterday, the twist to launch camera feature was awesome! Couldn't use flash there and many of the photos came out great... I got more, good, photos than my wife did on her Nikon DSLR camera. I was very pleased at the cameras performance in low light levels.

Oh, and while everyone was fumbling with their phones unlocking the screen or looking for camera icon, I took it out of my pocket, turned it on with twist motion without moving my arm or taking my eyes off of the stage, and took 8 shots by holding the screen, and slid the phone back into my pocket like a bad ass. I only wish my orange chrome accent would glow in the dark. This is like the super spy phone.

Very nice picture! I'm so happy with mine and I agree the camera is very good. I don't see why some are *****ing beside the fact that they just want too

Compared to some phones, iPhone 5 and sgs4, this camera is kinda weak. That being said, I'll gladly take the trade off for easy and fast launch and quick photos that still look more than good enough for me.
I think some people just expect professional quality photos from their smart phones these days... Some phones do... But to the majority of us, this phone takes photos well enough.
And I agree, some people will ***** regardless... If it wasn't the camera it would be something else.

So true
Camera is good enough, I spend about a couple minutes on all my photos and touch them up with snapseed. I don't mind and it's definitely worth the trade off for active notifications and touchless control. It's fun and easy to do and when the photo is done it gives it more personality. (Then a well focused sharp shot)
