[Q] Problems Installing NTGAppsAttack - Nook Touch General

Hi Everyone,
I tried to post this question to the NTGAppsAttack thread itself however the website didn't allow me to.
So, I've installed NookManager on my U.S. version Nook Simple Touch and all is good there.
After some fiddling I got NTGAppsAttack to run on my nook. However, when I went to sign in, I got an error message telling me that my nook could not connect to the server, and there was no cancel button. As I could not get back to the relaunch homescreen, I rebooted the device. I then tried to uninstall the market, but this was "unsuccessful."
Following this I tried to reinstall NTGAppsAttack, but on rebooting I was not brought to the page with the android dude and the hand. I still could not uninstall the market.
I re-rooted my device but the NTGAppsAttack apps were still present and I couldn't uninstall the market.
What can I do to get NTGAppsAttack working on my device?

Restore from the backup you made prior to installing NTGAppsAttack and then reinstall.

I have rooted successfully and installed ntgappsattack both via nook manager, however I can't see the android upon reboot or the new apps that should have been installed as part of ntgappsattack package. Would be grateful for any help with this issue.

This sounds like you never ran NTGAppsAttack from the NookManager menu. Are you sure you made it through step 9 OK? When you ran NTGAppsAttack from the NookManager menu did you get the messages "Install started" then "Install complete"? Go ahead and run it again to see the messages.

Yes I have installed it via this process over ten times to see install complete, When I then exit remove SD and reboot it starts up to re-launch where there is only 18 apps! No one else seems to have this problem! Is there anything I needed to allow or disable between rooting and installation. Where do the apps from ntg appear?

OK, then your install of NTGAppsAttack to the NookManager sd card must be missing some files. What do you have in /custom/files/NTGAppsAttack/gapps/system/app on your NookManager sd card?

I see. The first image shows the files in that folder. However upon closer inspection upon extraction with alzip this is the output message I don't know whether this has any relevance?

All those corrupted archive file messages are the problem. You didn't get a clean download of the zip file and need to download it again,

what you have to do is complete the registration steps faster. I know it sounds weird, but in the background it is updating and if you finish signing in before the update finishes your request will time out of the server. Reboot and uninstall the market (try again) then repeat signing in quicker. NO FILES ARE MISSING. I hope this was helpful

Install NGTAppsAttack frozen Nook

and ejected the card and waited for the Nook to reboot and got the start up screen.
I was getting ready to quickly follow the next steps and sign in and then install some apps but the screen remains on start up several hours later.
I have tried holding down the power button but no change.
Any advice?

Usually holding down the power button for 20-30 seconds to ensure the device is powered off then holding the power button down for 5 or 6 seconds to power it back on works. If not try booting back to NookManager, restoring your backup and starting over again.

[Q] APKs won't sideload via adb or a file manager

So I am trying to load a couple of apks I have and it's been no go. On my Epic I usually just dropbox, open, and install. I tried that and initially got the security message. That is already taken care of via nookcolor tools. So that isn't the issue. My issue is every time I go to install I go to Astro, open the file via the "open app manager," it takes me to the info install page...I click install and it loads into the package installer, excellent...and then it just stalls and the progress bar runs and runs but never progresses. This has happened with every apk I have now tried.
Okay...so I figured I'd just go the little more involved (very little, no need to be that lazy, right) route and adb install. Well carp. All goes well, I adb install blahblah.apk and it starts rolling..."570kb blah..etc pkg /blah/temp/blah"...and just hangs there...never to give me the gratifying "success" message. Again, I have tried this with different apks that I know work and the same results. I restored to stock and rerooted, just in case. Same
I am running stock rooted (manualnooter) at this point, just got the nook day before yesterday (one of the many who jumped at the refurbs). Market apps download fine. I'm a blue dot, if that makes any diff. Likely not but meh.
I have searched and googled and not found the answers...but I know I am missing something elementally simple. My luck I'll look like an idiot and it will be a "did you check to see if you had any gas?" broken down car scenario. I'm okay with that, as long as I'm running again. I'm pretty sure I checked all the out of gas scenarios but I likely missed one or two so... any help is much appreciated. Thanks a ton...

Well, My answer is not a "check gas" answer. It's pretty dang weird.
1. Download ES Explorer from the market.
2. Start ES Explorer, hit Menu>Settings. Goto Root Options (NEW) and tick both check boxes. Hit allow when it asks you to.
3. Go back twice, until you see your sd card contents. Find the APK on there and select and hold. Hit copy and then hit the 1st button on the row of buttons (it's an icon of an sd card OR a Home icon) If you see a data folder, go in to it. If not, hit the 1st button again.
3. Once in the data folder, go into the app folder. Pull up the little white tab on the bottom. Tap the APK you wanted to install. It will copy. Once you see the APK's icon in the folder, hit the home button and restart. That should have installed it but it is a slow method. Note that you can Multi-Select APK's by pressing the Multi-select button and pasting them all in the /data/app/ folder.
are you sure you have side loading checked
Settings > applications should be the top box.

I think he already took care of that. And he is on stock, so there is no Applications setting.

Not sure why but by doing this it somehow unsnafued the package installer as well (fingers crossed). I went through your instructions with a known good apk that would not install for anything before. And there it was after the copy, paste reboot etc. Not too much to ask for...still was confused as to the why of the normal package installer method not working. So I decided to give it (package inst) a go with another known working apk (I had just tested it on my epic) that previously wouldn't install, repeatedly, and now it installed just like it should. Scratching my head in wonder. It shouldn't be the reboot, as I have do so many times...the only difference is the install instructions and adding ES (I'm leaving astro behind I think). All I know is it is working and I am a happy camper (tent is in the back yard...) Thanks again! cheers!
Sure. Also, you can select all the APK's using the 2-file icon at the top and tapping the APKs, then press-and hold on one of the APk's and then go to data app, and keep tapping the APK's you wanna copy. And then reboot. Enjoy your Nook!
Thanks for this, it fixed it, but I don't know why.
I suffered this issue on my dell streak.
It was working fine a couple of days ago when I installed GetJar.
Suddenly today for no reason I can determine:
All APK's I tried the install button in the package installer was not grayed out, but it would not respond when pressed.
I've just been setting up my streak again and installing a lot of software. I'm guessing something must of gone wrong.
Someone on another post suggested JuiceDefender may have caused it but I've not installed that recently.
In my case I did:
(1) Installed esFileExplorer
(2) Copied an apk to the folder /data/app/ as described above
(3) restarted the phone
This did not install the app for me.
(4) Tried running the apk file again. Suddenly the Install button is clickable again?! The app then installed just fine.
(5) Tried a different apk (without copying to /data/app/)
Now that will install fine?!
This is really weird. I can't replicate the issue now (which is good!)
but I also can't tell which action fixed it.
As said above it may have been installing esfileexplorer and giving it root access.
It may have been the act of copying the file that reset something.
It wasn't the reboot, at lease not on its own as i'd already tried it.
Regardless, thanks for the info.
If anyone sees this issue again you might want to just try installing esfileexplorer and see if apk's will then install.
This might help us identify which bit of the process is creating the fix.
Just found another suggestion if anyone is interested:
Some suggests using the 'Fix permissions' option of Titanium Backup. I have no way to test this.

[Q] Rooting N2E with TouchNooter 1.6.24

Hi there
I have a couple of questions here before I take the plunge and root my Nook.
1) Is there a simpler way of backing up the default Nook system/ROM other than the "dd if=/dev/<nook> of=nook_touch_backup.img bs=1M" method in case I need to send it in for repairs? This method is too complicated for me. Or is there anywhere I can download the default image?
2) How do I switch back to the default Nook UI after rooting or is it not possible and I am stuck with the "rooted Android" interface?
3) After rooting, is it possible to install an app using the apk file instead of going through the market?
4) Lastly, would I still be able to install any firmware updates from B&N after rooting? Or is there no turning back?
My apologies if these questions have been asked before. Thank you very much in advance.
I'm still very much an Android OS noob, but did have great success with all the methods given here (rooting, backing up, installing, et. al.... this place is a gold mine for info), hence I'll venture some answers:
1) Simpler way of backing up: I didn't use that method. I think you might have read the first post in this thread, but take a look at post #2 (the link will take you directly there). It's what I used to effect a backup image using a WindowsOS. Very clear and very easy. (Extra: I found a great vid and some very helpful additional info on rooting at The E-Reader Blog)
2) Switching back to Nook UI: Yes. After TouchNooting, you can do this at any time by simply pressing the Nook hardware button at the bottom of the unit.
3) Installing APKs manually: Yes. No problems at all. I should mention I have no problems using the market either (check out this page at fixing any Market problems)

Stuck at YouTube step ... Help!

I have a Nook Touch with version 1.0.0 of the software. (Model BNRV300.) A few days ago I tried to root it with the touchnooter-1-6-24 method. Everything went fine until I launched YouTube and tried to select "My Channel": I got a "Network Error" message. (I think the WiFi was working OK, however.)
On a subsequent try I could not even get that far: when I clicked the YouTube icon, nothing happened.
My Nook is registered with B&N, although not with a Gmail address.
Should I try to reset my Nook and try everything again? (Unfortunately I did not orignally back it up.) If so, how exactly would I reset it? And then I would have to re-register it with B&N, right? Thanks and sorry I'm such a newbie at this. --Tom
Well, instruction for rooting tell that you need both BN and youtube to be done on the same gmail account, otherwise it won't work at all.
And Youtube is pretty worthless in a eink screen.

This is incorrect, what you need is an gmail/youtube linked account.
I did not use my gmail address for B&N registration, only for youtube/market, and it worked just fine.
Oops, my bad. I ahve all three - BN, gmail and youtube - under the same login with no problem at all.

but now i have that big oroblem. while rooting forever use too much time i ve unplugged the sd and reboot nook. i ve seen the android logo and inserted the gmail data but i pressed the home button. now when i press on the left i have the little android meu but if i press home android button nothong happen and i can t see marketplace or gmail but the b & n market.
i think is a partial rooting but now what can i do? do i have to rostore the backup and make another rooting? let me knoww

I have a question regarding the setup after installing TouchNooter. So after installing it, it got stuck on the Nook loading page (with mini circle) so I rebooted Rooted Forever screen show up and was able to enter the Go Launcher screen page. However, I only saw Market, Calendar, Gmail, and Settings. There was no Youtube App as describe. Is there anywhere else it could be or do I have to do a Factory Reset again? Thanks in advance.

[Q] New Nook N2E with 1.1.0, want to root

I recently bought a new Nook N2E. It actually came with firmware 1.0.0 strangely enough. I did slap 1.1.0 on there.
I want to root this baby. My question is should I revert to 1.0.0, upgrade to 1.0.1, root with touchnooter and proceed with everyone else, or just manually root it noogie style? Or I could stay at 1.1.0 and rip out of touchnooter the things that are not working. I'm just looking for opinions.

There's no simple answer to that.
In regards to Market things are a little messy on 1.1.0 right now, but we're working on it.
Some people claim they got Market working on 1.1.0, but GabrialDestruir is having trouble with finding a reliable solution for that and so do I.
If you absolutely want Market right now, then save you the trouble and go back to 1.0.1 + TouchNooter 1.6.24
If root is all you need atm, then just check out the updated uRamdisk thread.

there is a way how to (successfully?) block OTA updates, just google it out. It is simple sqlite3 db update.
Thanks for the replies. I decided that since Ive never seen the N2E running android, I would go 1.0.1 and Touchnooter and it worked like a charm. Only thing I cant figure out how to do is change Google Sync from Push to Manual

Somewhere I saw a menu and accepted permissions which I thought would allow installation of many non-market APK's. Guess I need some help, but close to success.

NookColorTools, even if non market apps is checked, uncheck and check it gain.
I've had success three times rooting it with full Market and search.
Here's what I did:
1) Backed up with noogie.img on SD and Roadkil's DiskImage.
2) Used nookRestore on SD to restore /system.
3) Erased and Deregistered to wipe /data.
4) Skipped B&N registration (I don't need/want it).
5) Applied 1.1 firmware update.
6) Used TouchNooter 1.6.24 on SD, modified with 1.1 uRamdisk and framework.jar.
7) Triple booted TouchNooter (gave it five minutes each time), removed card, rebooted, skipped Google registration.
8) Youtube --> GMail --> Market. Downloaded a program in Market.
9) Installed SearchMarket and ADB Wireless Widget. Enabled non-market apps with NookColorTools. Uninstalled YouTube (someone said this helps).
10) Used ADB over wireless to push Vending.apk from here. SearchMarket is no longer needed.
My original thread (with links and other details) is on MobileRead in the nook sections. As ros87 noted, GabrialDestruir hasn't got it to work, but I see no reason why it shouldn't if I've done it successfully on different devices. My guess is that some part of the process is being done differently.
TouchNooter's three boots went like this for me:
1st) Infinite loop of nook dots. I reset after about five minutes.
2nd) Complete freeze either on "Rooted Forever" or nook dots screen.
3rd) Success! and boot to Android Welcome. From here I removed the SD and rebooted.

I've been reading a lot of people reporting that they first tried TouchNooter and this failed, they then had to restore and try a different rooting method. Can this maybe mean that TouchNooter doesn't work anymore for some reason? Are there people which have recent successes with it?

I tried it and failed, and panicked at first. I then realized I could reboot the device, but nothing happened still. ros82 has a great thread with backups, shown here
Anyway, I took the recovery option one, and put it into my NOOK Simple Touch and rebooted. It said resetting to factory, wait till done. When it finished, I was rooted for some reason!
Apparently that "restore to factory" doesn't get around to restoring the boot partition.
I can confirm TouchNooter works - I used 2.1.31 to root a new nook touch that I bought over the weekend (twice).
The device was running 1.1.0 out of the box and I had updated to 1.1.2 before the first attempt. That worked but "device info" showed 1.1.0 after the root, and I couldn't force update the firmware after. Market was working after the 1-day wait as well. I used the 8 hard resets to restore the device and tried again on the stock firmware. Same results. I ended up using the MinimalTouch method after updating to 1.1.2 to root while retaining the firmware update.
Touchnooter did NOT work for me.
I have a new NST, came with 1.1.1 stock, then I manually upgraded to 1.1.2. Registered to B&N, have downloaded several books and transferred some epub and pdf files.
Then tried to root:
Upon starting up the NST with the Touchnooter SD image I created, I got the touchnooter instruction screen, then 20 seconds later did see a quick flash to black, then immediately the Nook startup screen appeared with the 5 dots along the bottom.
The screen stayed there with only the first dot black and it hung.
Waited awhile....10 or 15 min.
Took out the SD card, powered the Nook off then back on without the Touchnooter SD card in it.
The Nook was NOT rooted. Went right to stock Nook screens with my books loaded.
Tried it 2 more times, same result.
WHY doesn't this work on my Nook?

looks like touchnooter worked for me, but then on reboot i dont get adw option, just normal nook boots.. tried also salsicha nooter, same thing, why doenst it work for me!!!!
Touchnooter not working
I am sure there is something I can do to get this working, no? Had firmware 1.0.1, used the Touchnooter 2.1.31 booted and saw the little android icon and I started the process. Skipped the sign in and enabled location service, then flash of the screen and back to nook reader home. Restart, no Android icon, just e-reader home screen. Updated firmware to 1.1, retried touchnooter 2.1.31, still nothing comes up on startup, just acts like an e-reader, SD card inserted or not.
Sounds to me like some of you are either missing the prompt to select the launcher on 1st restart, or it's not working for some reason. Do you see the little Button Savior button on the right of the screen? If everything worked, you should be able to use that to get back to ADW. If that doesn't work, your default launcher may be set to B&N's home screen. I'd recommend a complete wipe and try again. TN has worked very well for me on 1.1.x, but be sure to set ADW as your home default on 1st launch if that's what you want.
If you have updated to 1.2, be sure to read around before trying to root. Things have changed a bit, apparently.

Arrgg. Unfortunately no, I do not see the button savior on the right. I had it rooted a few months back and restored it to the plain e-reader before trying to re-root again. I thought I did a complete wipe by updating to 1.2. Should I go back to 1.1 and then try the µSD?

I used the 8 hard resets to restore the device and tried again on the stock firmware. Same results. I ended up using the MinimalTouch method after updating to 1.1.2 to root while retaining the firmware update.

I've tried auto-nooter and touchnooter and nothing I try works. My Nook is running version 1.1.0 and WAS rooted before but refuses to root now. I have the nooter image (linux using dd if= method) on the sd card but rebooting the device with the nooter card in it never ends with a rooted nook. It simply boots up normally and then complains that the sd card needs to be formatted. I've tried restting/deregistering the nook and trying again. No dice. This thing will not root.:crying:

- for NST FW 1.2 upgraded from NST with recovery image 1.1 only 'tinynooter' will work (as for now) . You will gain root + adb but not the Market/Google Play.
I
I.1 - do a full recovery (6 failed boot's in a row [reset the device just after it starts booting])
I.2- upgrade to 1.2 manually
I.3- run tinynooter from CWR.
or
II
II.1 - wipe system partition using CWR
II.2 - install 1.1 FW using CWR (from cwr_1.1_zip)
II.3 - upgrade to 1.2 manually
II.4 - apply 'tinynooter' using CWR
same procedure if you just want to root 1.1.

Worked like a charm...after
I was having problems getting touchnooter to work. Running linux and using the dd command I found out I was screwing up the dd command slightly. I'd place the sdcard in my card reader and it would show up on my system as /dev/sdb1 (for instance) so I did the dd if=touchnooter.img of=/dev/sdb1 command but this produced a card that failed to boot even though the rooting software was clearly installed. Changing it to dd if=touchnooter.img of=/dev/sdb fixed the issue and a couple of days of problems rooting my nook became instant root upon reboot.
Now the problem I'm having is installing apps (or finding them). I try and install a google android app and it refuses to install saying my system security isn't setup to allow unsigned (or something like that) apps. I cannot find any security settings anywhere in what is provided by touchnooter that changes this. Also, while I can find a kindle reader app without issue in he amazon app store with a browser on my computer, it refuses to appear when I search the amazon app store from the rooted nook! WTF?
There seems to be a number of issues, in fact. The Opera Mobile app doesn't function, I cannot get gmail set to sync automatically, and I cannot get my yahoo email setup to work. Add to that the inability to install any apps beyond the base provided by touchnooter...I'm thinking of trying again only using the auto-nooter instead.

I suggest updating your nook to FW version 1.2
root with tinynoot as osowiecki shows in the previous post
you can then use adb to install apps
tinynoot will install nookcolortools- open this - and deselect and then reselect install non-markets apps.
this will allow you to install non-market apps
tinynoot doesn't include any google apps.
instead of gmail, I use k9mail - with this I am able to set up my gmail and other emails - all in one app.

The root process worked, and everything went the same, except that I can't get access to the Market. I've gone through the "Market has limited visibility" solution multiple times, but always get the "An error has occurred. Please try again later." error message. I've gone through 3 cycles of completely wiping the device, reloading to 1.4.3, and rerooting, but without success. Except for access to the Market, it's running fine - that is, I have access to all of his books and apps in the B&N garden, I can run other apps from the drawer, and I can install new apps from B&N's app store. Just can't get it to run the Market. Any suggestions?

Hopefully this will get you going again.
Choose "Manage Applications" from the NookColor Tools app
Select the "All" tab
Scroll down to "Market" and select it
Tap "Force stop"
Tap "Clear data"
Tap the back button
Scroll up to "Google Services Framework" and select it
Tap "Force stop"
Tap "Clear data"
Reboot the device
Once started backup, open the "Market" app
Most likely you will see the same problem
Choose "Manage Application" from the NookColor Tools app
Select the "All" tab
Scroll down to "Market" and select it
Tap "Force stop"
Exit back to the launcher
Open the "Market" app again, and this time it should work
Did you happen to update to the 1.4.3 firmware through CWM, or using the stock update process? Throughout the hundreds of times that I have flashed the stock firmware, most all of the market issues have happened while flashing the stock firmware from CWM. One of the best ways to get back to the stock firmware, is to follow the 8 failed boot process, then download the most current B&N firmware from B&N, rename the file to "update.zip," place in the root of the media partition, and turn the screen off.
Just for my two cents worth of experience...
If you've lost the 8 failed boots for whatever reason, you're better off flashing back to an older stock firmware and then doing the update from B&N to the latest...

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately I haven't made any progress. I've been resetting to stock firmware using the 8 failed boot process, and I've been using the stock 1.4.3 update (not CWM) to bring it current before running MN5. I have also been erasing and deregistering the device from settings before resetting to stock. I've gone through the whole process at least 5 more times since your post, always with the same result. After successfully completing the MN5 installation, I enter the Market app and follow the prompt to link the device to my son's Google account (which reports success), and then when I continue to where I would accept TOS, it gives me the error box. Following the procedure you posted doesn't get me past the error.
By the way, I started out using the same SD card that I used to successfully root my own device. The last time I went through the process to root my son's, I reformatted the card and rewrote it (using Win32DiskImager with the card in my laptop's slot) with freshly downloaded copies of CWM 3.2.0.1 and manualnooter-5.08.20.basic.block_updates.zip. No difference.
Sorry to be a pain - any other ideas? Thanks again for any help you can offer.

It's no pain, I would also like to find out what is causing the problem just in case it come up again in the future. Every time that I have experienced the problem that you are describing, that method has worked to fix it. Download this modified version on MN, and give it a try, LINK. I updated the market version in it try to get past that step, and also included an app called "Market Device Info." Sorry, I hosted it on mediafire, not my googlecode account just so people wont be downloading it, and trying to use it.
Once you have signed into the market, if it fails, open the app "Market Device Info," and check to see that you have a registered androidid. If this version of MN fails again on you, I will attempt to reproduce the problem on my device tomorrow to try to find a fix for you.

That did the trick, thanks! I wiped and reset to stock again, manually updated to 1.4.3, then ran the modified MN5 you provided. After the root completed, I opened the Play Store app, linked to my son's Google account, and it then prompted me to accept TOS with no errors. I've installed a couple of apps, and the only thing I had to do was untick and retick "Allow Non-Market Apps" to convince one of the apps to install. Everything seems to be working great now, thanks again!!

Please pardon this stupid question but I have tried to find a clear answer b4 coming to this thread. I am attempting to root my NC 1.4.3 w/ the Mannoot 5.08.20 and CWM 3.2.01 per the instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494901
The two questions remain are:
1) You must do a complete wipe before installing this package.
What constitutes a complete wipe
2) YOU MUST DOWNLOAD ALL YOUR B&N CONTENT BEFORE YOU CONTINUE,
Is this archive, to a SD or just download books from Library marked New?

1. There's a good description of how to do a complete wipe at http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM.
2. When I rooted my NC and my son's, I first downloaded all books, magazines and BN apps that weren't marked as archived with BN. In other words, there wasn't any BN content in my library with a "download" link attached to it. That's my interpretation of GMPOWER's instructions, and you should take what I say with a grain of salt, but I haven't had any trouble with accessing content after rooting.
I think I'm having a similar problem. I used MN 5.08.20 to root from 1.4.3. Everything rooted fine but whenever I try download an app from the market I get an insufficient memory error. I have tried all of the market corrections stated above. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Use CWM on an SD to wipe cache. Play store uses cache to temporarily store downloaded apps. It may be full.
Edit: I did a little research and Play Store temporarily stores the downloaded file to /data/data/com.android.providers.download/cache as download.apk, download-1.apk, etc. And it installs it to /data/app. So if you somehow have problems with that download location it will say not enough room.
