[Q] i9505 /system mount trouble - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I've searched through a LOT of posts, but only found slightly related (and for me unhelpful) comments.
I have a GT-i9505 (i9505xxuame2), and rooted/flashed it using Odin / modified_cf_root. However, although I have succsessfully installed TWRP - AND have (seemingly) been able to make a full backup to my external sdcard, I am completely unable to install CM 10.1 nightly / AOKP (both i9505 versions).
Whenever i try this (via recovery of course), it always fails, reporting it was unable to mount /system. When restarting the phone, it just 'hangs' on the splash screen. The only solution then is to restore my backup, which works fine... HOWEVER, I suspect that since it has problems with the /system folder, It might not actually have backed this up, and that restore only works because /system happens to be untouced by my attempts to flash it.
Trying various tips & tricks found here on XDA - like manually mounting /system in TWRP, reflashing in Odin etc. has not helped me. I also noticed that when entering download-mode, it states that write protection is enabled (as in this thread - which unfortunatly also did not solve my problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267107). I also tried CWM, but using this I'm unable to manually mount both /system, /sdcard AND extSdcard (or whatever extrenal memory was called... don't remember.. ) - and it of course has the same problems trying to flash either ROM.
My feeling is that my unit is not (fully) rooted, but like I said, I've been unable to find a solution. I really hope you can help, because I'd love to have CM on this delightful piece of hardware.

OMG! same issue here.. exactly, please HELP someone!!!

Format /system in recovery and then try flashing cm. It shouldn't be an issue mounting system if the partition is formated.

Please elaborate for me,
Wipe does a format of the partition, is that enough or do I need to actually to use Format in the menu, as in kill the whole internal storage?
thanks
Linus

wipe is enough

thanks for the answer,
I hoped for that and also tried it.
No fun
I think I'll have to go for full format.
Just hope that does nothing bad >.<
Or is CWM maybe a better alternative?

what error message did you get?

I had the same problem yesterday in twrp 2.5.0.1 I just formated system and preload and factory resteted and then just rebooted and formated system again and it worked.

Hehe I well tried that one,
no luck
interesting since 2.5.0.2 it says, unable to mount /system, and then promptly crashes
oh and the same happened in CWM
Hell XD
could I flash AOKP via odin maybe?
not like I like the idea >.<

It generally takes a few goes for the recovery to flash the rom in s4. Until someone works out what causes that bug in the recoviers you kind of just have to reboot and try again and again if necessary until it sticks.

Aright, I think I found the way for me
Boot into recovery --> wipe system --> mount system --> if ok --> flash
if not ok --> retry the whole process
Strange stuff, but yay thanks all for your help

Crap. Have same problem.

I had this problem after flashing MH8 firmware (new bootloader) with Odin.
No matter what I tried in recovery I kept getting an error saying that it failed to mount system.
I had an older version of PhilZ on my ext SD luckily, so I flashed this, rebooted recovery then I could format system and it was mounted again.
then just flashed my newer recovery back and all was good

Hi guys,
it appears I'm having similar issues to you both but after 5 hours of constantly trying to fix this I'm still stuck! I've opened a new thread and I was wondering if you might be kind enough to help me out on there please?
Here's a link to the thread - would really appreciate any help you could provide... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=46082532

Cannot flash roms or restore from recovery

I have looked and done searches for this problem with no matches. Phone stuck in bootloop after battery died. Pulled battery and went to recovery, tried to restore after wiping showed error message for data wipe
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1.
(file exists)
When I tried to restore the attached results show up on the screen.
Any help with this situation would be greatly appreciated.
Try installing another rom. If that doesn't work, try flashing a new clockworkmod version.
Yes, I have tried three different roms and flashing a different recovery with the same type of results. The problem seems to be with data. Everything I try to do including wiping data ends up in an error message.
Hmm. Then you might try going back to stock from hboot and rerooting
Is sd full, or nearly full?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
Id start with the newest version of clockworkmod and an new SD card.
Unrooted using the RUU with reverted HTC drivers. Process seemed to go fine but when it reboots it gets stuck in a bootloop with original droid bootscreen. I still have s-off and am wary of removing for fear of being stuck.
You could try flashing super vr wipe and do it that way.
sounds like the sdcard isn't mounting. i would back up the sdcard then reformat it and try again. or try another sdcard if you have one handy i usually keep a spare around just in case.
Look up five vibe fix ...

This kind of thing frightens me to death about flashing a new ROM. I'm dying to get that 2.3 ROM that just posed but I'm afraid of bootloops, whitescreens and error messages etc.
It's really not that bad, as long as you dont touch it while its doing it's thing it works great. I just installed Ovo Community Mod Test RC5 and it is SICK!
You need to update your hboot to .92 first though.

Sounds like something isn't mounting, but I'm not sure if it's the SDcard. Those directories are on eMMC, aren't they? Not sure if this would help, but I'd check to see if it's mounted as read/write. Looks like it's read only.

Dude, use Doug Piston's ROM Flashing Tutorial, here. It's easy.
After the screen shot showing Wiping Cache, also do:
Mounts and Storage - format /system, format /data, format /boot
Advanced - Wipe Dalvik
Then resume at the Install zip from SD Card screen shot...

I followed those directions and flashed the new 2.3.4 without any issues. I was originally on 2.2 rooted with unrevoked3
Much bigger problem. Now that I have run the RUU I no longer have clockwork recovery and cannot flash anything. When I reboot I get the droid bootscreen in bootloop. Frustration!
Have you tried just booting with the sd card removed? Issues with the sd card can stop it from booting
Also if you flashed the RUU your unrooted therefore have no cm recovery. You will need to root again for that.
Yes recovery was gone, attempted to flash clockwork again. When booting into recovery strange bar appeared and screen went black. After several tries with same results flashed Amon ra style recovery and now have this recovery but am still getting bootloops when flashing and having same E: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (file exisits) error messages. Confident there is a solution but have no idea how to get there. Determined though! Any help is greatly appreciated.
It is saying read only file system . E:Error in CACHE:recovery/log
This is at the bottom of the recovery screen.
Ok, I've said this a few times on here, but I don't see were you've mentioned that you've tried it. Remove your SD card and see if it boots!

Help! CWM not installed properly?! Bricked devices?

Hi folks,
5 day ago i rootet my tablet 16GB WE and installed Koshu`s CWM step by step like discribed in his threat [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1831161]. At the end there was an error message..., i was too quick and made an reboot bevor i could read it.
But i tested if i rooted the tablet succesfully and the superuser-app said that i am root now....
Then i installed the v.0.8.1 Version and everything was fine!
a few days later i got reboots during normal use.
Now i cant boot in the OS, there are bootloops the hole time.
I think that i have not installed the CWM correct...
Any ways to check this with adb commands or something else?
It would be great if someone could help me....
Sorry for my bad english!

You can still boot into CWM? Well you could make a backup of the installed recovery (like shown in the CWM thread) and check if the md5sums are equal to the downloaded image. Btw. linebreaks in the logcat would really help reading it

yes i can Boot into CWM, but i cant restore my backup. I tried to install cm10 clean again but after rebooting CWM and booting the OS Android is updating the apps. But i did a full wipe bevor.Thats why i think that the CWM is not in an good state.
i am in the road and maybe i can later check the md5sum.
I can attach an picture from the CWM during trying formating and fixing permissions.
thank you!

I linked a zip file in the CM10 Thread that formats the data partition: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846044
You can find it in the "addition steps" section. Beware that it will delete all your personal data including the internal sd-card (also nandroid backups if you have stored them on the internal sdcard). So make sure you have EXTERNAL backups if you want to keep some of the data.

I have nearly the same problem.
I rooted my TPT a few weeks ago, today I was reading about Cyanogen and decided to install CWM. After some issues with the adb drivers, I managed to install the clockwork recovery.
Now I followed the steps from the cm-thread. I did a nandroid backup and wiped my tablet. After that, I flashed CM10. But all I get is the CyanogenMod logo spinning around.
I tried to go back to my nandroid backup, but it seems broken somehow.
I also tried several several CM-versions and downloaded them several times, without success. But I realised, that the installation procedure of CM was very quick, too quick maybe? Could it be that my clockworkmod isn't installed correctly, because the installation of CM and the nandroid backup won't work.
I hope you guys can help me out. Because I only could find nandroid backups for ROW and US version. I also don´t have adb access anymore.

You have to download the formatdata.zip on your external sd-card.
After that you can boot in the recovery and flash this .please dont juse the cwm! Do you know how to boot into the recovery?
Power on and during that you should drop-down the volume + key a few seconds.

I was thinking about 2 possible solutions right now.
1. get another nandroid backup (Problem didnt see any for the 16gb WE version)
2. try no reflash another CWM version or maybe ventana cwm and try again to flash Cyanogen (don't know if its possible to just flash another recovery as an image with the current working recovery)
So what do you guys think?

One last question. I am using the folio keyboard with an european layout (qwertz), but with Cyanogen it is us layout (qwerty). How can I change this?

Cant mount cache recovery log
I had a normal factory setup Samsung Galaxy Y GT S5360 and I tried to install a new KItKit Rom but Its all gone pearshaped !!
I have tried a load of different images which all load ok with the exception tat i get error messages like Cant mount cache recovery log.
I have also tried using odin to flash it back to its origonal firmware but after selecting the 3 files it runs and finishes saying failed 1
The phone does go into recovery mode and then I can run any of the cwm's that i have tried.
Doesnt exactly go into download mode as per any pictures ive seen ! I can either put it into recovery mode or with another key press put it where just the battery icom shows up when connected to the pc.
I have the samsung drivers installed ok on my pc.
Should I just give up ! On one image I did manage to boot it but it kept restarting unless the sim was out but i have not recreated that again!

you need to reboot to recovery again after restoring cache to see if it worked
you can do it using biels kernel - works fine on that - you will have to convert your system to ext first
first flash biels temp cmw
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649475
mount everything and flash the ext converter tool (unmount and remount system)
http://www.mediafire.com/download/s6191k8ze9en0l6/ext4_formatter.zip
mount everything again and flash flash biels kernel
http://www.mediafire.com/download/lzw3ddt9dtd9tw3/kernel_CM7_v4.0_totoro.zip
Then reboot to recovery mount everything (unmount and remount system) and flash cm7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2673610
once you have booted cm7 you can go back into cwm make a nandroid backup and then restore cache
if you want to convert back to rfs to use stock based roms you will have to flash stock rom via odin
note you cant boot stock roms using this kernel but you can boot cm7 roms if you want to flash cm7 after doing that

if you want to convert back to rfs to use stock based roms you will have to flash stock rom via odin
note you cant boot stock roms using this kernel but you can boot cm7 roms if you want to flash cm7 after doing that

if cache is not mountable after the rom has booted and you get error 492 with trying to download apps just make a nandroid backup and then advanced restore cache from that nandroid backup
oh and as you are using cm7 you need to flash gapps to get playstore and so on
you can download it from
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
make sure you unmount then remount system and data before flashing

I understand, thanks !
So when I started out with this I wanted something like KitKat as I iunderstand you can better control app access to mobile data and wifi with various apps that are available. All the apps for this 2.3 version of android did not actually work !
So do you think I could now upgrade to a newer android or should just leave it ?

no as there is no kitkat for galaxy y
there is also no jellybean
there is ics via cm9 but there is no audio/mic so its not useable as a phone
cm7 is the best you are going to get with nearly all core functions working (the only thing that doesnt work is streaming audio via bluetooth and fm radio)

Cyanogen-11 stuck while booting (yes, I googled)

Hi, everybody!
I am stuck with the problem, I cannot solve, and cannot google.
I saw a lot of similar, but none of the directions helped me to fix my phone.
I've got my Nexus 4 which was a great phone until I updated it to 4.3, some of the screen portions became senseless on some applications (starting from SMS, to some game apps).
I was suggested to downgrade or change ROM, which I am trying to figure out right now.
I've rooted my phone with SuperSU-v1.85 and installed Clockwork-6.0.4.3.
Once I've done it, I was trying to load an images of cm-11 and gapps-4.4 with
adb push
it finished all operations in cmd, however, I got
E: Can't mount /sdcard
Thus, I've tried to install all zips from sideload and my cmd.
I didn't touch kernel.
Once I've done this, I tried to reboot, but Cyanogen stuck, running circles.
I've tried to do factory reset, clear cache and dalvik, however none of those worked.
I also have been doing this with a more stable release (cm-10.2.0), but I got same thing.

I've tried stock ROM 4.2.2, flashed it with flashall.bat, stupidly, it works.
However, what is the problem with the custom ROMs?
Do I do something wrong?
ps. screen is still unresponsive in some areas.
Maybe you'll have better luck with TWRP 2.6.3.3.

Just tried it.
Didn't work out with MIUI.
Just put the files directly onto the phone either by downloading them on it or transferring normally over USB.
Reboot into recovery
From here you got options but to make it simple do a full wipe. A full wipe is deleting everything but your internal storage. That includes / system /data and everything else your recovery shows but the internal storage. Then just flash the ROM zip and gapps zips from your internal storage after the wipe and reboot
If you delete your internal storage you will wipe out the zips you just put there. Along with your media. Pictures music and whatever else is on there
Wiping your data will wipe your apps. So if you want, back them up with something like titanium backup prior. They will still be there after you flash the custom rom as long as you don't wipe your internal storage.

Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
So i kinda figured it out.
well, I sort of did something(i think) and its now working fine... I went to twrp.. did a factory reset. Then went for advance wipe and wiped system cache and dalvik. Then followed the same procedure. Bootloader-->radio-->Rom-->Kernel. It worked just fine. The first boot took some 15 minutes.
does the internal storage work for you? it works only on twrp for me :/
i can't see anything in file explorer and canìt restore from twrp :/ that's a big problem guys.
If you can not see your old nandroid backups
After rooting If you can not see your old nandroid backups
Via file explorers try to enable usb debuging from
dev. opt. if not worked (Recovires or SuperSU issue)
But you can see and restore your old or new backups via recovery (TWRP tested)
New recoveries and superSU may fix this issues.

Recommended Recovery is TWRP 2.8.1.0

I had the this same problem. After installing everything, I let it sit for 20 minutes and it finally showed the Android logo. After that it was stuck on a black screen. I wiped everything and repeated the install procedure again, minus the kernal, and got the same "unmount of /system failed: no such volume" while flashing the rom zip. It booted after a while and everything works except my storage is FUKT. I cant see any of my pictures, music, etc, and the only thing I see via PC is the DCIM folder which is empty. Not cool

Nothing wrong with my storage. I installed the bootloader, radio, and rom on top of my existing 4.4.4 rom by sideloading in CWM. Wiped caches and rebooted to make sure everything was working, then back to CWM to sideload the kernel. I haven't rooted yet.

I always enable usb debugging, didn't help. And as far as the file transfer, it won't let me. I can only access it while in TWRP. All my files are there, its just android can't see them, and wont show under windows either. Not sure what the issue is there, I've tried everything I know of. I'll just flash CM12 that I was using before. Let me know if you figure out this problem, as I'm curious as to what is causing it (and I'm not the only one having it).

All of this was without autoroot. Don't worry about it man, I just installed my old rom. For some reason this ROM doesn't like me and spupuz's phone. Thanks for trying to help me, I appreciate your time. Let me know if someone else has the issue and you figure it out, I'm very curious as to what it might be.

I flashed this ROM this morning, and I initially had the weird can't unmount /system error. I rewiped, using twrp to ensure that /system was wiped too. Install went fine. I have a weird glitch or something on my recent apps list, though. I attached a picture. Anyone know what this is? It doesn't seem to be causing any functional problem, but it looks bad.
Edit: I cleared the cache for google now launcher, and restarted recovery and wiped my cache partition and the error went away.
