[Q] Would Nexus 4 support USB OTG after updating to android 4.3 or 5 ..??? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering if my nexus 4 would support USB OTG(obviously without external power bank) after upgrading to next android version 4.3 or 5 whichever comes out..
What do you people think can it be possible..????

No. It's the hardware. No software can change that.

Firmware can.
I'm not familiar with the OTG situation with the Nexus 4, but is it a literal hardware restriction/limitation making it impossible to have powered USB OTG? Or is the code just... non-existent or non-finished?

It's a hardware limitation. The phone can't detect a usb flashdrive when it's connected with a otg cable because it can't provide enough power to power the USB drive to access it's storage space.

More power can't be forced? It just seems pretty strange for a USB controller not to be able to power smaller devices like flash drives, especially with this phone (sure I could understand it with some no-name older Samsung phone, but not with the newest flagship Nexus phone).
Although I'm pretty sure this might of been discussed elsewhere in great detail.

Extra power be forced, just not from the phone itself.

Power can be forced. zidgey Kernel proves that with power you can do it. Its only a matter of programming to make the phone supply the power. All phone micro USB ports are the same, and if another phone can do it, this phone can.

is there any development going on right now to supply 5v power from the phone it self.. i've this 4 days old nexus 4 with me and its so frustrating its not supporting OTG while my old GNex did same without breaking a sweat...

Not to sound like a jerk, but did anyone click on the links I posted previously? LOL.

Writing/modifying the kernel will enable OTG but you still need a external power source to supply the flash-drive.
Zippey's kernel is modified to enable OTG.

So yeah the phone just doesn't have enough power to power an OTG cable. The usb port on the phone has a certain voltage output that is simply not enough to do OTG. Boooooo

Just wondering if anyone tried to make a 3.3v-5v converter with something like the ltc3529. I saw a couple post in the arduino forums about successfully get a 3.3v arduino to supply 5v for usb host.

Android 4.3 Stock rooted nexus 4 to USB OTG
I had stock Android 4.3 and wanted to get USB OTG to have more space using powered USB.
I first downloaded and installed Nexus root toolkit 1.6.6 and Unlocked the boot loader and then rooted the phone (pre -requisites for loading ziddey-otg-r165-07291101. zip)
All went well.
I am at Android 4.3 and rooted and then I went to recovery (TWRP) and then selected Install and selected the .zip that I downloaded from XDA.
Boom!
I tried to reboot the phone and ever since stuck in the start up screen just displaying the google icon for nearly 15 minutes. Did i just manage to brick my phone? Please help!
Also I am currently using the same toolkit to re-install factory stock Nexus 4 Android 4.3
Will the ziddey-otg-r165-07291101.zip not work at android 4.3? Please help any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks,
Sandy

yup it wont... atleast for now, wait for cm 10.2 after that we may get it working on 4.3... please read the first page before flashing anything unless you want to brick your phone...:good:

with increasing popularity of 3D printers and electronics skills, it would be nice if somebody could create a low profile device that attaches to USB port and internally has a rechargable battery with DC-DC converter to scale up to 5V and has all the wiring to connect a microSD. I know I would buy it.

[Q] MicroUSB Flash Drives

Super-n00b question;
Is there any way of knowing at the moment whether something like this would [or wouldn't] work with the Nexus 10?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Verbatim-44...1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1352379380&sr=1-4
Thanks.
If you get a USB OTG adapter and root the N10 then yes. That's just a normal USB flash drive, like any other.

Thanks. That has a MicroSD connection of course, so I assume by USB OTG Adapter, you mean something software-wise as opposed to a physical hardware adapter?

I think you misunderstand. By "Micro" they mean it's really small. It's still got a standard size USB connector on the end, so you need a USB OTG cable to connect it to the microUSB port on the tablet.
EDIT:
This is the cable; http://www.amazon.co.uk/T-Flash-Ada...NQXS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352381003&sr=8-1
This is a better picture of your "micro" adapter: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/customer...PAR5SLVO/B0031YFK5C/ref=cm_ciu_images_pl_link

That's great news, I was under the impression this app used to require rooting. No difference to me, I'd never touch an unrooted Android device, but great for those who don't like to "fiddle".

Ah. Yes, you're right. Thanks for pointing that out!
Just realised I've got the title totally wrong too 'MicroSD' > 'Micro USB'. :silly:
It is unfortunate that the marketing department of some storage manufacturers abuse the term "micro usb flash drive" for regular usb flash drives that are small.
I also hope they some day produce flash drives with native Micro-USB connectors, preferably extending needed enclosure to the sides of the connector, not in length like traditional (even small) flash drives. Even with the upcoming crowd funded MicroSD to Micro-USB adapter, it would always live in fear of accidently breaking it. I'd rather have some 16 or 32 GB Micro-USB stick that is half-moon-shaped and only a few tiny millimeters long, but could extend say 2 centimeters alongside the tablet.

It is unfortunate, what would be nice, is something that plugs all the way in, and then fits against the body of the device so it's snug and protected with no chance of breaking or getting knocked off, wrapping slightly around the contour. I'm pretty sure now I think about it, that this is what you meant by "half moon", perhaps "crescent moon" would be a better term?
Erm.. yes, I was struggling to find the right words to describe what I had in mind. Whatever has to be outside of the connector due to technical reasons should offer as little added profile with as few edges as possible.

Is this legal? Well, from Google's point of view anyway cause it's up to them to allow or take down such app. I'm not into rooting for warranty concerns, so how sure is that this app will be supported/left untouched? Major buying point unrooted external storage access for me.
As all the app does is mount the external storage and copying or streaming data from it, I can't see anything illegal there.
Rooting isn't illegal, nor are any apps that use it, the app isn't going anywhere, at worst you will lose warranty, but to be fair, it's a nexus device, you're kind of expected to root it.

It's easy enough to unroot, nobody need ever know you did it and technically voided it. Like I said, that's worst case.
As for the app, never used it personally so ill let someone else chime in.

The app he asked about isn't working with root at all (so no write access). Perfectly legit not to root if he can live with the things he can't do then.

Would also like to know if you can use USB2GO with the nexus...
Any OTG cable will work.. don't pay $20 for a cable that is only worth $1.. unless you're buying like 5 or more in a pack.. Amazon got some good ones for like a dollar and they ship from the States
Also the kernel will have to support USB host for OTG to work.. not sure if the stock kernel does
So do external storages work, unrooted?
If you don't root you can get an app that lets you view, down load or stream video files or documents from stick drives or card readers. It does not allow you to write to the cards however. It works great for those things.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer
There is a free version that only does photos.I suggest using it first to test and see how you like it.The above version is a $3 app so make sure the free one works before buying the other. jmo
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...iwiY29tLmhvbWV5c29mdC5uZXh1c3VzYi52aWV3ZXIiXQ..
If you need to write to a card you will have to be rooted and wait for them to iron out the multi-user problems with the 4.2 update before the stick-mount app will work again. It is broken at present but once working again will require root to mount the sd card so files can be transferred via a file explorer app to the sd card.

It seems that CIFS is also an issue with 4.2 ... Google must REALLY want us using Play to seemingly block the CRAP out of doing any R/W to external sources.
Of course it could just be a "side effect" of the new Google "security feature" that locks USB access to the process that spawned it.
I want to know how the Nexus Media app is getting away with it. Maybe it's because everything is IN the app - so the USB access continues to work.
I dunno ... all I DO know is that my Nexus 7 is staying on 4.1.2 until it's fixed.
Tried with the one I have from the galaxy s3 and it was not recognized. The sgs3 is rooted stock. When I plug it into the galaxy, it immediately sees the USB host connected
Edit- tried it with a USB mouse and it worked fine
Kevin
I would like to know more information about this matter too. I'm really new to otg stuff, but I do know that you need to be rooted un the nexus 7 for it to work fine.
I think it needs to be rooted to use USB OTG. i have a 2$ USB OTG working fine with my unrooted S3 but on the nexus 10 it won't regconize.
Just tested it with a 5 bucks OTG, so far:
Mouse razor naga: OK.
USB keyboard microsoft: OK.
Pendrive Kingston 4gb: nothing happens.
For me it's ok I just wanted to use it for the keyboard. No problem at all.

Bought this one and it works but I wouldn't recommend it because the male end that goes into the Nexus10 is a little too long and creates a loose connection. I'm gonna order another type tonight.
Stickmount works great on my rooted nexus10.

I have a otg cable that works fine on my S3 but I plug it into the nexus and I get nothing. The S3 auto detects the cable alone but nothing at all happens when I plug it into the nexus no matter what, if anything, is plugged into it. I just want to use it for mouse and keyboard.
Think I should buy another cable to try out or am I missing something?
A cheap OTG cable that came bundled with a $60 tablet my mom ordered works on my Nexus 10.
On an unrelated note, Samsung should of bundled a USB OTG cable.

DO NOT GET THIS ONE!
I have the same one and it completely blocks the headphone port which is right under the micro-usb port. The micro-usb plugs in with the flat part facing you / the screen so this one would obviously angle down and over the headphone port. Find one that is either straight or angles the other way.

It should work fine, using ubuntu 13.04 on the Nexus 7. Provided, you are using a powered hub, or a modified kernel that allows host mode charging, together with a "y" cable.

OTG w/ WD My Passport

First off, I am using Resurrection ROM ( latest) with no kernel modifications, just the stock kernel that came with the ROM itself. My question is: Is it possible to hook my phone up to an external hard-drive as another source of storage? How do we use the OTG function. I've never used it before. I got the OTG cable from NewEgg and the product description said you can hook it up to mouses, keyboards, etc.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I'd be careful - the power requirements for WD MyP's are pretty high - I'm not sure that the phone can output that much power from the USB port.
Your phone, or your HDD, or both could be damaged!
I too use a wd passport, mine is 1tb and it works using otg cable. Depending on what you format the drive you may need stick mount from chainfire to use it.
The biggest issue is going to be power.
A 1TB drive may kill your phone.
I would also agree with tech-head and wiltron. Even though we can power and use the drive, I would use it only as needed and not leave it connected longer than required.
