[Q] Help, can't install apps whatever I do

Hello. I'm new here, and I'm not sure if this post goes here or in the Apps subforum. If I'm mistaken please forgive me.
I rooted my Nook Touch and I followed some instructions to make the Market app work. But it doesn't search anything so I can't install anything.
I need at least an app to access the filesystem from the PC, or the app "SearchMarket" so I can properly use the Market to install things.
I've tried a lot of things but nothing had worked:
Install SearchMarket from play.google.com and send it to my Nook -> Nothing happens to me.
Install from the PC -> I've read various guides but I can't never connect my Nook to the PC that way, the USB drivers never works.
Install Opera and install apk from there -> I install Opera, but as soon as I launch it, it crashes.
¿A way to install apps, please? I'm desperate here, as nothing I've tried have worked.
I'm not a completely noob, I've root several devices and I know about computers. I'm just new here and for some reason I can't get the guides I read to work.
Thanks in advance.
::::::::::::::::::::::::EDIT::::::::::::::::::::::::
OK, finally managed to install SearchMarket!!!
Now I need to access file system from PC to modify the internal dictionary, because I want to change the language... how can I do that? Thanks!
::::::::::::::::::::::::EDIT2::::::::::::::::::::::::
I guess ES Explorer will do the trick. Thanks anyway xD

Due to the popular demand, and the questions in the last few days. The problem arise from people who were using verygreen version of root. The true is, his version of root works, but what very happens is that he decided to lock down some of the stuff, and thus making further mod become inconvenience for a lot of people. Many people don't know how to fix it. They do not know how to read and interpret the error message and fix it. In a way I think this maybe a better alternative since I believe people who looking to modify their Nook HD/HD+ or root them, what they very after at the minimum is the Google Play store and ability to install any apps they want. While this isn't gonna get you everything, it does most of what people are very after with very little fuss. The main purpose of this thread isn't to have everything working, because we are working around the limitation of what the Nook has, but rather stream line what we already have working and get it there quickly and painlessly from a scratch. So this is mainly to use after the system has been wipe/factory reset.
After I have made this post, I still got someone PM me said it doesn't work. While I'm sure that it does work, I want to be very confident about it. So, I decided to sacrifice my already good setup of my Nook HD+ and FULLY FACTORY RESET it then record this video. Let me make it clear, the file was download from the thread again, and not from my local copy. I'm baffled. I'm just not sure is there is anything easier way it can be done. Seriously just unzip and run 1 command and people still say it doesn't work. The responsibility to read the information is up to you. I don't have the capability to upload those information to your head. Since I already proved that this work, I'll not response to PM regarding this. If you have question or problem, post it on the thread.
Disclaimer:
If something gone wrong, it's all your fault. I take ZERO responsibility for what happen to your device, your life, your wife/husband, your kids, your unborn child and etc. You get the idea.
Breaking News:
It seem the latest update 2.0.5 actually break the root. So, be warned.
Preface:
I didn't discovered the original root on the Nook HD+, verygreen did Nor did I discover the ability to enable install of unknown source. Leapinlar thread has the history on that so I won't go there. But I have created some scripts to help gaining root, modify some critical setting, and adding GAPPS to the Nook HD/HD+, but they are all scattered. Leapinlar has a thread that help gather many of those information together here. Still people are still having trouble. As I stated, I believe what many people are after is just the ability to install any app they want. And this should get very close to their goal. While the end goal is probably something like a custom ROM, something like a CM10 that verygreen is developing; and I believe it will get there. It will probably take a bit more time for the installation process to be easy for people to follow. And there may be something that need to get fix when the very early beta come out. It's like in the Alpha if not pre-Alpha ATM.
While this will get a lot done for you, I still encourage people to go read the original mod threads, there maybe some useful information for you.
1. My original root thread.
2. My original GAPPS thread.
3. I encourage you to read the Nook HD+ Stock Root User Tips from LeapinLar thread, this is like a must read for anyone planning to root their Nook HD/HD+.
Pre-Requisite:
Working ADB that can see Nook HD/HD+ and the Nook HD/HD+ of course(that include enable ADB on the Nook also). If you need help getting drivers and ADB to see Nook, check out LeapinLar thread. ATM, Nook HD/HD+ have 3 firmwares version, 2.0.0, 2.0.2 and 2.0.4. When the get it online it will update automatically. So far all the mods we know of works on all 3. But this doesn't mean it will on future version. Again, LeapinLar thread will have that information as well.
Instruction:
Download these three files. allinone.zip GoogleMaps.apk and gapps-ics-system.zip
Unzip allinone.zip (don't unzip gapps-ics-system.zip)
run allinone.bat
after you got google play store, I suggest you to update it first, the run it at least once before installing Google Map by either copy it to Nook and use your favorite file manager to install or using the command
Code:
adb install GoogleMaps.apk
Post-Install: (or if you don't see the google apps)
The way apps installed via B&N store are different from other apps install via sideloading or any other app stores, and that include GAPPS as well. What this means is that all these apps won't show up on the stock Nook Launcher naturally. But other launcher will see them w/o any problem. That said, I recommend you pick another launcher from the google app store and use that instead. In order to see those extra apps from the Nook Launcher on the Apps screen, hold the volume up button while you press the "Apps" word at the top of the screen for 2-3 seconds. An "Extras" screen will pop up showing all of the sideloaded apps. Another thing is that the superuser app need one extra nudge. It need to be launch at least once manually before it start working. This only need to be done once.
IMO, while I could just point you to one of the launcher or even sideload it during the installation for you. I prefer not to do that. I very think the choice to choose one should be your own. Personal preference aside, I rather not point you to one because I don't know how safe is it to randomly point people to some random apk when it's not even the real purpose of this. I very prefer people get to the google play store on their own and get it from there. If you don't know one then ask around. Many people here have suggested ADW, Apex, Nova, Zeam. If you want to grab apk to sideload, then you can try androiddrawer, it look rather ok.
PRECAUTION:
All these mods you see the Nook HD & HD+ are workaround. They are not the holy grail. So, for example the superuser checker app won't recognize them. That doesn't mean you don't have root, you do but because it's not a traditional root thus they don't see them. A bigger concern is that because this is a workaround. And it's a workaround because we don't have full control of the Nook, any modification to the files or added files /system and its sub-directories (regardless of whether you do so manually or via app) will result in 8 boot loop followed by a full system wipe. Anything stored on the Nook internal storage will be gone. As such, we encourage you not to use such app. We know of at least SuperSU and many ad removal apps will create such event. For more information I strongly encourage you to read those threads I pointed to earlier.
Footnote:
Google Chrome browser is also not included, it's quite big and the latest version doesn't seem compatible(at least that's what I heard). And the voice search is also not working.

So, would you be interested in seeing a simple all-in-one guide? It's already done, I'm just not sure whether to make another thread or not. Meaning I'll leave those guides I made outdated and rotted. Although I just updated the GAPPS installation to be super simple. The All-in-One will basically be the same thing. You just run 1 command and get all three of them. Since I figured people who root their Nook HD/HD+ will end up want to get GAPPS anyway. If people want it, I'll put a new instruction on this thread instead. The Poll will run for 3 days, and then after the poll close, I'll consider that a majority decision. That or if a mod close this thread for duplicate.

Well, if it works consistently enough there will be nothing for the layperson to get confused about. Only if it leads to troubleshooting would it maybe cause problems (because the person would have no idea what steps were taken).
I say if the process can be further automated, even if it's just (hopefully) a stopgap to more thorough root and ROMs down the road, then by Glob do it!

I'm not sure what further automated this thing could be, you only have to download few files, unzip and run ONE command to get all three things done; root+Manual OTA+GAPPS.

Right, I'm saying go for it. Your proposal in this thread would be "further automated" than the current method where only root is automated, is what I meant.

Yes!
I have ADB & side loading working via Mac OSX, but would love an all in one before taking on this next step as I'm not too good with Terminal commands.
Yes please! I'd love a step-by-step to root the device, manual OTA, and GApps! Although, I do still appreciate the work you have done so far, it's amazing! ;D
Thank you very much.
Sounds like a fantastic idea! Please do! And thx again for all you've done for the nook HD community!

I have 2.04 - the installation went well. i've tried and i'm able to get launcher running but cannot get playstore running.
Ok, am I just messing this up big time or what? When I run the .bat it starts, then it says mkdir failed for /data/su, file exists. Then it tries to do every file saying "cannot stat "whatever" : No such file or directory." Over and over again. Major fail. I've rooted multiple android phones and tablets without these kinds of problems. Am I messing up something simple?

If you rooted once before it will give you that cannot mkdir error. You might erase and deregister using the B&N settings, then as soon as you reload and register, run the mod. Only once.

I've done that a few times, but I'll try again.
Thank you very much for this all-in-one. It's genius!
I've just installed it on my Dad's HD+, and it works like a charm. Damn, it's so amazing! One thing though, rookie question, and I guess I'm asking for too much, but would it be possible to redirect the "Apps" icon on the "desktop" to auto redirect to the Android app-drawer; where the Android apps are located - i.e. Play store? Sorry for the bother, and I understand I am asking for too much, so please ignore my message.
Again, thank you very much for your efforts. Works like a charm.
Did a full reset on my HD+. No longer shows the mkdir failed part, everything else still says no such file or directory.

Did you download that gapps-ics-system.zip file and put it in the same folder you are running the allinone bat file from?

I've tried it in the same area and out, although I'm not sure if both were fresh. I'm trying yet again here in the next few minutes. I will get this. I've only owned one android device that I didn't root, and the was the Samsung Intercept. If you've ever heard of that piece of crap, you'll know why I didn't bother.

Finally! I'd already had the gapps in the folder before but I guess the su file had already been created. A full wipe, followed by proper placement of the files finally worked! I would ask if it is sad to feel so good about such a simple achievement, but I don't care. It finally worked! Thanks to someone0 for the all-in-one and leapinlar for the advice.

adb frustration

Hi All,
I have been trying to get ADB working on my windows xp PC for my HD+. I purchased this from staples and it is at 2.0.4. I followed 2 separate threads here in addition to info on nookdevs from BN. I am able to see my nook in ADB but as soon as I try to run the allinoneroot and the nook reboots its gone. no more devices. Even if I just disconnect the nook and reconnect to my PC i see same behavior. basically it looks like my PC is not able to retain the ADB setup after the nook reconnects.
Any pointers? I have another windows 7 PC which I am planning to try next but i have no clue why this isnt working? should i be deleting some existing installation from my PC? I am new to Nook HD+ but not really new to android or ADB. I already have a Nook color with CM7 running on it and have been upgrading etc for past 1.5 years.
this has been my most frustrating experience with ADB so far. Please help.. I am so close to taking this back to the store.
thanks!
Can you open up the shell/batch file and execute the commands one by one to see where exactly it's messing up?

I had the same problem. It loses the ADB after the first boot. I had to leave the cord plugged in and the command window open and go to device manager. I went to USB controllers and uninstalled the USB composite device. Another device popped up in other and I updated the driver to the nook drivers again. Then the command prompt took off to the next boot and same thing happened. Just went through that every time until finished.

thanks!. "I think" the root is done. I reconnected after each step and it said installation complete. But i dont see any apps at all. how do I access Google Play for the next update step per your post? thanks for guiding me through this.
If I go in settings->applications I see Superuser,Talk etc.
thanks!
Was able to open google play using the browser. Installed ADW Launcher and it looks good. a lot of apps come up as not compatible in play though. maybe dpi setting is incorrect?

There are many things that make certain apps incompatible. It have tried several things including dpi, modifying build.prop (which I recommend against unless you want to reset), and nothing seems to help. I just think the HD+ is not on its list so most things show incompatible. The only solution is to use other devices to download and sideload. There are web stores that let you use your browser to download but not all apps are available. Like 1mobile.com.

I've simply copied many of these apps from my phone to my PC then sideloaded. They work fine. It just seems to be that they aren't teed up for this sort of Bastroid 4.2.1 that B&N has deployed is my guess. Example, free angry birds works fine this way. Once loaded, you can backup with Titanium backup and reload if needed.
thanks evenryone.. the adb wireless included in latest root makes is so easy. you devs are awesome.

Rooting Kindle Fire HD - continually fails

I am about ready to give up. I tried the "root-android.org" oneclick and it continually fails. The technical support for the rooting software from root-android.org is not helping. I'm not sure that the oneclick method has ever worked on a Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3. I have downloaded SDK and the ADB as directed and kindle does show up on my devices (32 bit with Vista running) but various methods can't seem to connect to the Kindle from the PC. I really want to be able to do more with the Kindle and with some help I believe that it can be done. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I do have a Macbook Pro, but everything I have read indicates that you need to use a pc and not a mac.

It worked - rooted my Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3
Thank you so much for the assistance in completing the rooting of my Kindle Fire HD 7.2.3. I have so much admiration for all the developers that take the time to help newbie like myself when it comes to modifying these devices. So you know, the procedure was VERY easy to follow for this 67 year old man. Krsmgn, I am so grateful especially to you for getting me on the right track.:good:
The only issue I have now is getting Google play to work. I completed all the steps except the last one to keep Amazon from interfering when I want to go to the Google Play store. I still don't see anything in my apps for Google Play and wonder if I did something wrong along the way. I was able to use my phone Google Play store login and password when installing the software.
I also have a proble with ES File Explorer in that I can't get to the area called for in step 16 of the proceedure for getting the Amazon apk file moved to the download file.

Sir do you have an app anywhere called terminal emulator? If so go in there and type su and tell me what it says? (Verifying that you have root) after that I may be able to help walk you through the process
Or....
Open ES File Explorer, open settings and choose root settings (down near the bottom) make sure all the boxes are checked. Then you should be able to access /system/.
As for Google Play, go here.

Haha probably a lot simpler to do his method. Also if you have a super user app open it and set it to auto grant permissions. Had an issue myself where it wouldn't show the prompt
Market stops
Fianlly see Google Play in the apps. I rechecked all the steps and found that I cannot move Vending.apk to /System/app. The failure indicates that the file cannot be moved from /sdcard/Download to /System/app.
I also can't figure out how to "ES File Explorer or Root Explorer, change permissions set to Owner: Read-Write, Group: Read and Others: Read". Is the procedure talking about tyhe Vending.apk file?
STOP - I was able to move the file (Vending.apk), rebooted the Kindle and now I can go to Google Play where it shows my already purchased apps for my mobile phone. It indicates that two of the phone apps are starting to download but that's it. Seems like it can't really download. The files are continually stating that they are "starting download".

Seems like you got yourself in a weird spot. Rather then trying to find the needle in the haystack, it's sometimes easier to simply start over from scratch. What I mean is to remove all google stuff and reinstall. I mean everything "google" that wasn't on your kindle when you got it.
Then... Start over here.
Give it a try. I have been right where you are and this has worked for me. Nobody said it was going to be easy to make something do what it wasn't intended to do.
All is well that ends well
Thanks so very much for your patience and assistance. I have everything working on my Kindle and I owe it all to you. I even have the living wallpapers, seeing all the online videos I couldn't before, using ES file explorer I can look at everything from root down.
Many thanks to you and all the developers at XDA.:victory:

I really want to be able to do more with the Kindle and with some help I believe that it can be done. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I do have a Macbook Pro, but everything I have read indicates that you need to use a pc and not a mac.

chetek,
I am sorry to hear you are having trouble. The One-click Method does work on the Kindle Fire HD and 2 it is not preferred since there are many known Bugs with SuperOneClick. The first problem is the SDK, if you install the SDK and setup the environment variable correctly you will trigger Root MANY ANDROID and Qemu Root to fail since they already have a build in adb tool.
The problem with installing the SDK is several fold:
1. The SDK is over 500MB - The SDK is designed for Developers NOT End Users
2. There are only 2 programs used by the normal End User: adb.exe and fastboot.exe - they total less than 200KB
3. Qemu has its own adb.exe
4. SuperOneClick has its own adb.exe
5. Root MANY ANDROID! has its own adb.exe
So what happens is when SuperOneClick calls to it's internal adb.exe, this triggers the SDK adb.exe to start. They both use the same port so the are unable to communicate to the Kindle due to this port conflict. If adb.exe is lucky, it attempts to pull from it's own Root directory in an attempt to Push su ans Superuser.apk. Guess what? These files are not in the SDK directory so in the end, the utilities completely fail.
The solution? Remove the SDK, you will be able to Root the device in less than 5 minutes. Next you asked about Rooting the Kindle with a Mac, yes this can be done and is preferred over Windows since the Kindle driver is built into Mac OS X, here is a link to the steps:
[ROOT] How To: Root the Kindle Fire 7" HD or 2 with Linux/MAC - Noob (Simple) Version
Finally, since you have Vista, please be sure to apply this fix prior to Rooting the Kindle:
[Bug Report] Attention Windows 7 and Vista Users - Noob (Simple) Version
So the final conclusions are:
1. Remove the SDK
2. Remove the SDK Path Statement if Inserted into PATH
3. Verify Driver is functioning
4. Apply the Fix
5. Use the Mac if Windows continues to fail

Raymond199483,
First let's get you in a thread which we monitor closely - click on the link below:
[ROOT][HOW TO] Root the Kindle Fire 7" HD and 2 with Windows - Noob (Simple) Version
Please begin the operation per the instructions. Check the driver per the tutorial, then post us what you see in the Windows Device Manager. If everything appears OK, then proceed to the Rooting steps, please let us know what happens with the first two steps - do you see error? If yes, what do they say?
Once you give us additional information we will be able to get you Rooted.
