Install the stock 4.2.2 Launcher into a ROM? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been wondering if I could somehow push the stock 4.2.2 Launcher that comes with the stock jellybean update into lets say CM10.1? I always preferred the stock Launcher over all those different ones, is it possible though?

Take the app from the stock ROM located in system/app. I believe its called "launcher2".
Then just put it into the system/app directory of the other ROM. Also change the permissions to rw-r-r, and delete the old launcher that is there. (In the case of CM, I think the original launcher is trebuchet so delete that apk)

I tried that before and I couldn't get it to work, I also tried to install the "Launcher2.apk" and it refused to install, I managed to install it by doing the following steps:
1-Flash the stock ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147281
2- Download Titanium backup and back-up the "Launcher2.apk" file.
3- Do a full reset to phone/cache/dalvik
4- Flash the latest RC1 CM10.1 or whatever ROM, then reboot.
5- Install TB again and then restore (App+Data) for the "Launcher2" file.
6-Reboot
7- When booted, choose the "Launcher2" as the default Launcher.
8-Finally, launch TB and deleted "Trebuchet", Reboot.
The procedure might take long and I'm not sure if there is an easy way to do it, but I got it to work that way.
Thanks!

BlurAlarmClock....

Is there any way to install BlurAlarmClock after installing the EpicUnleashed 2.5 rom? I already tried putting the apk in my apps folder and changing the permissions but nothing seems to work.... thanks in advance!
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Try to copy the current Clock.apk to your sdcard for a backup then delete it from your system/app folder and then install the other AlarmClock.apk. see if that works. I had the same problem when I was trying to install the D2Eye modded live wallpaper and it installed fine after I removed the original eye livewallpaper.

[Q] How to install default Gingerbread Launcher?

I installed a new Rom, but it came with ADWLauncher, and i really don't like it. I want to install the default gingerbread launcher. ADW drains my battery so fast, and it is slower than default. What should I do?
Its risky to explain. Because i dont know wich rom you use. But be warned, you can broke your nand install. Then you need install again your rom. Make backup before go to froward.
This is only for gingerbread version.
1. Download rootexplorer at market and install it.
Open root explorer and go to /system/app folder.
Look did you have Launcher2.apk (on gingrbread rom) there. If yes, then go forward to step 2.
If no, download attached file and extraxt it. Copy extracted file to sd somewhere. Then with rootexplorer copy this file to /system/app folder.
Go to step 2.
2. Delete the ADWLauncher.apk.
Dont try go back to home screen. Right there where you are (rootexplorer opened on /system/app) press power button and go to reboot.
Enjoy, if all was gone right!
Thank you! will try asap
I'm using TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 v2.3 ROM. As soon as I can I will try it. I'll post the results. Thank you so much.
Go to settings, applications, manage applications and find ADW launcher. Clear the defaults for the app and then press the home button. You should be offered the choice of launchers that are installed on your phone. Set whatever you want as default and just never use the other(s).
This obviously doesn't get rid of any applications, so you can switch between launchers as much as you like.

I tested it with stock B138SP04 (Esthonia) and it worked. Are you trying with the same ROM? Have you tried with the second installation method?
I haven't tried the second method...as the Rom became unusable, I had to reinstall. I've tried with B162 as well, no joy. Does it have to be rooted?

How to delete app that was installed via recovery as a zip file?

I installed a handwriting app from another thread via twrp recovery by choosing install from zip file , so the nexus sees it as a stock app, only giving me the option to disable instead of delete. How do I uninstall it, now that it's a system app? I've searched all over the web and can't figure it out. I tried using titanium backup to do it, but it just boots me into twrp and I see no setting in there that let's you delete an app that you flashed via zip... Thanks!

Restore the backup image you made before installing the app

If you know the name of the app and are rooted, you can go to /system/app and delete or rename the app. Disabling the app would work also. Why is that not ok?
I don't want to have things taking up unnecessary space. I'll try un installing by deleting that folder, since I didn't make a backup, I never imagined I would have to go so far as to restore just to uninstall an app, my mistake. I just can't believe that's the only way, I've restored before from backups and it's quite a lengthy process sometimes. At least when I used titanium backup.

If you are Rooted you can use Ron Toolbox from the store. It allows you to uninstall any app. Even System apps. I have been using it for some time and love it. It's great for getting rid of crapware installed by the OEM and Carriers that you don't want on your device. But it does require Root.
Thank you all, I am rooted. Deleting the apk in system /apps folder seemed to work, at least I no longer see it when I look in settings and downloaded apps. I will try rom toolbox though, thanks again for the quick responses!

If it is an HTC phone with S-ON (i.e. no S-OFF), then then any change to the /system partition will be reverted on next reboot, so, yes, you can uninstall a system app, for example using TitaniumBackup, but it will re-appear after reboot.
If you don't have a nandroid backup, then you could open the original ZIP file that you flashed, look what it does, and create an UNDO.zip and then flash it. If it overwrites some existing files, then you can pull them from the original ROM.
For example, if all you need to do is remove some files:
1. Take the zip attached in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2058944.
2. Unpack the zip.
3. Edit updater_script in a text editor, and modify the paths to the files you want removed.
4. Repack the zip.
5. Flash via recovery.
The operation can be done completely on the device if you have a proper file manager with archive support. I used TotalCommander which can open ZIPs and edit files in them, and when you press the back button it will ask you to repack the modified file back into the ZIP.

Not sure if you want to modify your own TW launcher or locate one that is already modified for 5x5. A forum search would find threads for both approaches.
Here is a summary of what you'd need to do to effect the change yourself. If you find this confusing, then you should search the forum for a more detailed tutorial.
Backup your phone.
You will need apktool to decompile the launcher, /system/priv-app/TouchWizHome.apk
Copy the framework packages to the apktool directory, i.e.
/system/framework/framework-res.apk
/system/framework/twframework-res.apk
Open a command prompt
Add the frameworks to the apktool configuration:
Code:
apktool if framework-res.apk
apktool if twframework-res.apk
Decompile your launcher
Code:
apktool d TouchWizHome.apk
Go to the TouchWizHome.apk/res/sw360dp-xhdpi folder
Open integers.xml and change the grid to 5x5
Code:
<integer name="home_cellCountX">5</integer>
<integer name="home_cellCountY">5</integer>
To shrink the icon sizes, edit dimens.xml
Recompile the package
Code:
apktool b TouchWizHomeNew.apk
The recompiled package will be unsurprisingly named TouchWizHomeNew.apk
Open both the original TouchWizHome.apk in your apktool folder and the recompiled one with winrar.
Copy over the "res" and "resources.arsc" files from the recompiled apk to your original launcher apk, overwriting the files that are there. This is done to preserve the apk signature.
Copy the modified TouchWizHome.apk (not TouchWizHomeNew.apk) to your priv-app folder, overwriting the original.
Confirm that the apk has 0644 permissions.
Reboot to recovery mode and clear your system cache.
Reboot.

If you were trying to install it with the package manager e.g. by clicking on it.. it doesn't work like that. This is a replacement system app that needs to be moved to the correct directory, rather than installed per se.
Backup your phone just in case anything goes wrong.
Your phone needs to be rooted, so that you have access to the system files.
Use a root file browser to copy the new launcher to /system/priv-app/TouchWizHome.apk, overwriting the existing file.
Check that the launcher has 0644 permissions.
Wipe your system cache and reboot.

You didn't mention earlier that you had a custom launcher installed. Your custom launcher has probably disabled the stock launcher. Revert or uninstall the custom launcher, so that your phone is using the 100% stock launcher. Then move the one in this thread into the priv-app folder.
If you didn't explicitly install a custom launcher, then your Omega ROM may be packaged with a modified or renamed launcher. You can search the Omega support thread and/or search the forum to find out if that is the case.
Or try one of the other 5x5 modified TW launchers in the forums.

You're not providing nearly enough detail to discern what is going on with your phone. What does can't see the launcher mean? If you couldn't see the launcher you wouldn't have a homepage. But somehow, I doubt you would have neglected to mention that if it was the case.
You didn't spell out what you did step by step, confirm the path and name of your existing launcher, provide before and after screenshots or anything else that would give us crucial details to either see what went astray or where you made a misstep. Your signature says that you are using a Nexus.. are you installing this on a S5 or N5?
The launcher has worked fine for dozens of people. A few in this thread have had difficulties, but it's impossible to know why because of the lack of details. If you expect constructive help, you need to provide exhaustive detail of your situation.
.
Sorry mate.
I'm trying this on my wife's S5 which is Australian version.
Steps
I'm using Google launcher as default.
First downloaded apk and over written it to the location mentioned.
Changed the permissions as mentioned
Cleared the defaults for Google launcher
Booted to recovery
Wiped cache
Restarted
Now I can only see the option select launcher after unlocking from restart
The only 2 options visible are Google launcher and easy touch wiz
Plz refer to below screen shots
Note - the original Touchwiz launcher is around 4 mb while the downloaded one is around 3 mb
And the old touchwiz works fine when I revert
Thx

The extra detail helps enormously.
You didn't mention a lot of crucial facts earlier in the thread e.g. having installed a non-stock (Google) launcher already, Australian variant, odexed ROM, etc.
Ideally you should revert your phone to a stock launcher before installing this one as I have no idea what changes you made when installing the other launchers, nor did you describe them.
This launcher is also intended for a deodexed system, although if you remove the corresponding odex file e.g. remove both TouchWizHome.apk and TouchWizHome.odex and wipe the launcher cache and data from the Application manager and wipe the cache partition from recovery mode, I expect it should still work on your phone.
Your immediate obstacles are the presence of the odex file and possibly your modified system configuration expecting a launcher file name other than the stock TouchWizHome.apk.
