[Q] I bricked my Galaxy S4 - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I was trying to root my S4 using the video and downloads provided by QBking77. That did not work so I tried to update Samsung software.
I got a message saying the software has been downloaded and will be installed. Clicked yes and now all I get is a black screen with recover booting on the upper left hand side corner.
Please help.

Go do some research on Odin. I'm not very knowledgeable in this, I came from HTC, but I think Odin can help you.

First try pulling the battery and starting again. If you are still stuck you are going to want to Odin the stock tar back on.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I dunno what I did but somehow its working again. Pulled out the battery and still the screen with Samsung Galaxy S4 and recovery booting showing on the screen. Pressed the power off + volume down + home screen button and was somehow able to restart the phone which seems to be working fine now.
The problem is I dont know what happened there? And if its safe to go ahead and update the samsung software or not?
Any clue? Any advice is appreciated.

Sounds like a typical update fail to me. It will most likely do the same thing if you try again.

Bricked Vibrant

Sorry in advance if im posting this in the wrong thread or if this has been posted before....
I have a Vibrant and i was updating using samsung kies. I never rooted my phone or did and customize things to it. i was going through the updating process when samsung kies said that the update failed and to disconncet my phone. so i disconnected my phone (the screen said download mode and do not turn off target). now when i try to turn my phone on i get a black screen with a phone triangle and computer logo. it will not go in to recovery. cau u please help... thanks
hopefully there is a way to fix this without using odin
odin and download mode there is a thread in development about in the bible i think about unbricking a vibrant, its very hard to brick a vibrant completely, I have done so before, but you can recover via odin.
Your phone is not fully bricked. and your better off than me half the time
How were you trying to boot into recovery if you've never rooted or customized? Your phone is not completely bricked if its turning on so I'm sure there's a fix.

You can boot into recovery without being rooted... i did it before when i wanted to do a hard reset.. plus the tmobile rep wanted me to try and boot into recovery to do a hard reset and clear all user data.

remove the battery for five minutes, then reinsert it. You can now go back to the normal download mode. ANd I think you can even boot up normally. The former scenario happened to me so I am quite sure of that.
THANKS!!!!
big thanks to everyone i got my phone up and running again. i used odin (which was tricky) and followed the steps i saw in a youtube video. right before i was about to give up i called tmobile and ordered a replacement phone ....lol...tried one more time and it worked im SOOOO HAPPY this is a great community of people , couldnt have done it without u guys THANKS AGAIN!
I always brick my baby, and Odin is always there to save me

[Q] galaxy tab stuck on boot screen, help appreciated

I've been given a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for free. All I have to do is make it work again. It keeps trying to boot, but just is caught in a loop, it keeps showing the Samsung boot up screen, first showing the tab 10.1 screen, then playing the sound, how do I reset it so it will work again? help appreciated.
The first question is, do you know what model of Galaxy Tab 10.1 it is?

It's very hard to read, but on the back I think it says: GT-P7510MA. I do know that it is the wi-fi only model.
Whatever you do, *only* use files for GT-P7510 models. You can look up the GT-P7510MA and see if it is supposed to do more than WiFi.
In any case, can you get into recovery? Does adb work?
If it boots up like that, I think odining back to stock would almost certainly allow it to function properly again.

I now have a screen that says, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue, Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again. Kies can't see the device, but Odin can. What file do I use in Odin to go back to stock, and where can I find it?
Thanks
Think I've made progress, found the firmware on sammobile.com, and was able to get into download mode, and install the firmware, fingers crossed, using odin. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the help.

AT&T Galaxy S4 Wont Boot into Recovery

I have a client's Atnt galaxy s4 that will not boot up normally and will not boot into recovery also.
when i try to boot into recovery i get the blue lettering in the top left and it just sits there i have let it sit for sometime like that with no change.
this is not my first go around with flashing android devices so please even give me Dev only options if that is what you think will fix it. i feel bad because he just bought this phone 2 weeks ago and cant use it. not sure what the other guy that tried to root it did and neither does he so i am shooting in the dark so any help would be great.
I have tried flashing the stock Odin package with no luck.
Also tried Kies Firmware upgrade with no luck
Most of the custom recovery for this phone from what i read are not flashed threw odin anymore, but if i am wrong please link me and i will give it a shot.
Dose anyone have any ideas someone told me to use the .PIT file and re-partition the device and reflash the stock odin package. but i have had no luck locating the .pit file for the I337 galaxy S4 could anyone grab it from there phone and upload it for me or any ideas on how i could possibly fix this issue.
Thanks in advance
Since you already tried ODIN, why don't you try KIES.
I tried that allrdy just forgot to add it to the list updated first post
Copied this from another thread, guy was having same issue.
EDIT: Problem solved by scott14719. Here it is: As soon as you feel the phone vibrate, immediately let go of the power button but continue to hold the other buttons until the recovery boots, then let go of them.
Phone goes into download mode ok?

ok i will have him give it a try
and yes it goes into downloading mode with no issues at all.
if the os isnt hosed just download goomanager and install the recovery then download a touchwiz rom that has an extended reboot menu, you can then just boot into recovery from the OS.

In addition to letting go of the power button after the vibrate, here are a couple of other things that appear to have worked for other forum members. I didn't discover any of these fixes, I just did a lot of reading and saw where others have had similar problems and found ways to solve them. That is what makes the XDA community great:
Uppercuticus said:
I've had this happen to me several times while playing around with flashing. Basically (without fail in my experience), hold power+volume up+home as you'd normally do until you see the booting recovery message and let go. It will do one of two things - boot into recovery- or - restart and vibrate-. If it restarts and vibrates, immediately hold power+volume up+home until the booting recovery message pops up again and let go. It should then boot into recovery and you shouldn't have trouble in subsequent attempts.
It took me a while to figure this out and I actually thought I had permanently bricked my phone as the phone wouldn't boot and I couldn't get into recovery. Hope this helps.

Just flash a different custom recovery tar in odin. If ur using CWM, then flash TWRP, or vice versa.

After using ODIN, make sure to do a software (factory reset) to get rid of any data and settings that stayed behind. The firmware packages that we have for Odin, do not wipe everything on their own.

Thanks - was having the same problem. At last somebody explains it properly. It worked.
(Why on earth is the script on the stock recovery screen so small. You need a microscope to read it. I am going to install CWM right away....)

here are all the details;
Rooted ATT Galaxy S4 MK2 with Busybox. all went well until I tried to flash and boot into recovery. Installed ClockworkMod Recovery, tried to reboot into recovery...permission error. Installed Team Win Recovery, same problem.
investigated... Superuser.apk for some reason is NOT present in app directory. hmm. checked for root, have root.
installed ClockworkMod Superuser from play store... asks to update superuser... fails with signature error.
There seems to be no way to flash this phone. I have the original backup I made with ClockworkMod but restore fails with signature error.
The phone works fine, has root but I am concerned I will not be able to update to 4.4 when it's available. I am also NOT able to flash any alternative ROM. frustrating.
I see there are relatives to this issue all over xda but as far as I can tell after a weekend of trying is there's NO WAY to boot into recovery with write permissions being allowed.

phone won't reboot or go into recovery

I put the tri rom on it today and everything was fine. Part of the way thru the day it suddenly rebooted and went to the animation screen. I try to go to recovery and It doesn't do anything. I have been flashing for years now and this has never happened to me before. . can somebody please try to help. I looked for the answer for hours.

Download mode by itself wont do anything. You need to plug it in to the computer and use odin to odin back to stock.

Can somebody be specific about the odin download cause I'm clearly missing something.
ok I saw the Odin download. Is the verizon and sprint one the same thing?
For Odin, yes.
For the actual ROM, no.
Do NOT use a Verizon ROM on a Sprint phone.

stuck in recovery boot mode

i was following a thread to get CWM and eventually android 4.4.4 onto the stupid phone http://www.trueandroid.com/2014/07/update-at-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-to-android.html
i used a program to load teh CWM boot loader and then had it restart the phone. however, something got jacked and now my phone is stuck in a recovery boot loop.
running nc1 software at&t. non-rooted (kot49h.i337ucufnc1)
odin just fails trying to flash philz_touch_6.08.9-jflteatt.tar.md5
all i get on the screen is the system recovery menu and a android guy on the screen with "No command." message
any options from here ? i just did a keis backup of the phone before i left the house today (about 2 hours before i f'd up this phone).
please help, thanks !!!
i got the same problem.
it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue".
i got it after i tried flashing "CF-Autoroot" via ODIN.
i wonder what went wrong.
how do i resolve this problem?
PLEASE HELP! :crying:

I actually just let the phone sit at the recovery screen and it came back up.
I originally used towel root and rom manager to try and load the cwm software.
