What has really improved vs SIII? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Is the WiFi signal better then the poor reception the SIII had?
That's my only question however any other thoughts would be nice to bring to attention excluding the obvious changes like the camera and screen.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium

Besides the camera & the screen (which, IMHO, is a BIG upgrade & DisplayMate thinks so as well), other improvements are:
1. Faster CPU (dual to quad, for US)
2. Faster GPU
3. Gesture control (some are gimmicky, some are truly useful)
4. Better design (subjective, I know)
5. IR emitter for TV control
6. LTE simcard with international roaming built-in
These are the ones that popped up really quickly in my head.

There is also the bigger battery and the new quick charger, unless the s3 had one as well? It also comes with gorilla glass 3, don't know how much better it really is though.

5inch Full HD Super AMOLED (1920 x 1080) display, 441 ppi
Nevermind. I just noticed that you already mentioned this in the original post.

I don't believe any international carrier has an LTE roaming agreement with sprint.
He is probably referring to gsm roaming.

I got my S4 today wewt. The radios compared to the sIII is a huuuge improvement in my opinion. I used to have horrible wifi reception.(like 1 to no bars) now I have full reception, its literally a big change because im using a WNDR4500. The price tag speaks for its performance. Also my 4g is now 12db better. Im happy of course including all the other great features

I'm more concerned with how scratch proof the glass is. I know on my evo 3d with gorilla glass 1 I had 0 scratches over 2 years and didn't use a screen protector. I doubt it would be a downgrade from that.
When a phone company makes a screen that is shatter proof without compromising the premium glass I will be impressed.

I still have my GSIII since launch date, I never once had a case or screen protector, and the screens flawless, not even any wear n tear scratches if u look very close. So i too wonder how much more improvement the new glass has

For those owners who had an S3 and have upgraded to the S4, are there any noticeable real world differences in performance between the US versions of both phones?
I know it's a dual core vs quad core but they both have the same amount of RAM. The upgraded GPU is probably the most appealing feature of the S4 but I wonder how much more smooth games run at 720p on the S3 versus at 1080p on the S4.
I'm currently still using the S2 and am considering upgrading to the S3 for $99. Another feature of the S3 I find appealing is SVDO which allows for 3G data use while on phone calls. I don't plan on relying on LTE.

i had to go find the "allshare control" apk and framework files to get the original allshare control on my s4. watch on is cool but allshare control is better for samsung smart tvs... why would they pull that app to begin with? it will not even show up if you search for it in the play store from your s4... what does show up is allshare control for tablets. madness

From having the phone since launch and have had the S3 and S2, I can say that the battery life improvement is AMAZING, the phone feels like a high quality phone. the reception is better, I couldn't get signal in my office with the S3 or S2 and now I don't have any issue with that.

I'm diggin it.. I think my expectations were too high though. I guess that's what happens when the phone is talked about 6 months in advance. I came from the T- Mobile Galaxy S2 which received the official ICS updated only a couple weeks before the Galaxy S3 was released. Plus the development with ROM's was starting to take off.

Best phone I ve ever used! I'm enjoying it so much I'm not in a hurry to flash any roms yet only addition I've made to stock is the keyboard. The Samsung keyboard was driving me crazy. ICS keyboard is the best in my opinion even if it don't have a swipe feature. I was worried that it was gonna feel cheap and slippery in my hands but Sammy did a good job cause its the best thing I've ever held in my hands, well one of the best definitely glad I got the white hot color, so.. sexy! It's okay. I also have the SGSII and the Galaxy Nexus. The SGSIII is by no means a big improvement over either.
The software experience and design of the Galaxy Nexus makes it the most enjoyable to use of them all.
I think Samsung only defaced the ICS UI with their butt ugly TouchWiz UI (which I've been able to cover up for the most part with Apex launcher).
Most of the touted new features (besides the camera) of the SGSIII are pretty much gimmicks and don't even really work. S Voice is horrendous and should be deleted. The most useful one is probably smart call but it's only a hit or miss.
Overall the SGSIII is a stellar phone but I was expecting much more. I'm really left wanting more.
My 3 most frustrating issues with it are the horrendous battery life on T-mobile USA (also the battery takes an eternity to charge), and the freaking middle hardware button instead of the software button that's supposed to come with ICS. This detracts significantly from my experience with this phone and lastly, the freaking auto brightness is useless (and you can't use the phone in direct sunlight)
I would definitely return this phone if not for the 32GB storage with micro SD support and the zero shutter lag camera. Samsung you really performed way below expectation . I was expecting much more from the king.
I love it! I came from the Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S) though, so it was like a night and day difference between the two.
Same as another poster, I quickly installed the vanilla ICS keyboard, as I've never liked the Sammy keyboards. I'm not a swipe user, so I didn't lose out by moving to it.

You may want to try swiftkey keyboard. It's definitely the best. There's a trial version to help you get a feel for it and decide if it's for you.
This is my first Samsung phone, I came from a Dell Streak. I am 100% impressed with this phone. Couldn't be happier with it! I am of course looking forward to the inevitable Jelly Bean development...
I came from the s2 and this phone is better in all aspects. At stock the s2 was garbage. The UI was the same as gingerbread and that's awful. The s3 is way snappier thanks to the ram. The screen is a massive improvement, size and resolution. I like some of the "new" features. Its better than the "new" features of ios6 which is a freaking complete joke. Pop out video, swipe for a screenshot, and prevent screen timeout with your eyes are all actually useful features. I don't regret buying it outright.

Coming from an original EVO with Sense.. the performance of this phone is amazing... love the hardware..
Touchwiz... ug... While I always use a custom launcher anyway, it's the 'little' things that Sense did which I love, specifically the contact list...
In fact I really hate this contact list so bad, it might cause me to swap this for the Evo LTE.. I just cannot stand seeing Facebook, twitter, linkedin ,outlook and gmail contacts as seperate entities... no reason I should see 5 entries for some of my friends.. Sense had it right with their linking option.
ALso loved the aggregation of Facebook, messenger etc.. that sense did. (Though the app "Contapps" has something very similar, it's almost perfect in fact, just hate the contact navigation itself there...)
(And no Touchwiz's linking is horrible as you have to manually link everything!! That's going to take me HOURS to do.. sheesh).
Overall the phone is great.. just irks me that the "PHONE" portion is the most neglected piece of the entire software.. seems somewhat Ironic.
Loving mine. I got a white one. My dad got the blue and my mom has my Hercules. Its fun watching them play with smart phones

Why buy a Nexus 4 if you have a Galaxy Nexus?

I've seen a lot of comparisons and done some searches, but I haven't found a great thread really comparing the advantages of the new Nexus 4 over the Galaxy Nexus.
I have the Galaxy Nexus running on T-Mobile. I purchased the larger Samsung battery (~2100) and haven't had any complaints along those lines. The phone doesn't seem to lag and has been among the best devices I've owned.
I do agree the camera could have been better..I felt it was a step-down from the camera on the T-Mobile G2 I had previously. I also wish phone manufacturers would put a dedicated camera button on the phone!
Forget about cost...why should I upgrade?
Thanks!

If you already have the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus the only reason to upgrade is if you want better hardware.
Me on the other hand, I have the VZW version so there's a lot of room for improvement for me to go GSM.
If I upgrade, its because I want faster HSPA+ speeds. I don't really like where the headphone jack is placed, tho. I like it on the bottom of the Gnex.
The nexus 4 looks nice but the glass back is so easy to break

-HSPA+ 42mbps
-Quad Core S4 Pro / Adreno 320

-bigger battery 2100 vs 1850 mah
-much better camera...
Can you think of a reason NOT to upgrade?
Thanks...

I'm switching from the Gnex for the IPS LCD screen, bigger battery (although I'm sad it is non-removable), and the camera. I could care less about the processor and RAM because the gnex is more than enough for me in those categories. I also don't like the form factor of the gnex with the big hump thing at the bottom; I would rather just have it be all one thickness the the N4. I love my nexus and wouldn't trade it for anything... except the NEXT NEXUS!!
simple, its shiny and new and has nexus in the name.
this guy compared n4 to GNex throughout the review

The resolution is practically the same (both around 720p) although IPS vs. pentile may be a bit of a plus. Also, the GNex on Verizon is theoretically almost twice as fast as HSPA+/42. I've got the extended 2100 mah battery as well.
My thought is that the Nexus 4 will be snappier, take better pictures, and get better updates and less meddling from Verizon. HSPA+/42 is only offered by T-Mobile in the states whereas AT&T only supports HSPA+/21. Might be enough for me to switch to T-Mobile but the $240 to end my Verizon contract is a bit daunting.
It's an easy decision for me, I get to upgrade my phone after 10 months buy selling my Gnex all for less than £100.

I don't think one necessarily need to upgrade if you know how to customize the OS. Its still a very good user experience. Galaxy Nexus is still a great phone and would be my next recommendation after the LG Nexus. But if you can afford it then go for it.

Should I buy a Nexus 4?

Hey,
I have had my one x since release day, but now it is in a bad way.
The screen has become partially delaminated, allowing dirt into the screen and causing a section of the touch screen to not function. The back is also very scratched.
Assuming I can do the repair myself, the parts would cost around £115.
My question is, should I get a nexus 4 or would I be in any way downgrading?
I could do my best to disguise the problems (clean under screen and reseal) and I might get around £150 from a recycling company.
A few things to note are that I love stock android and the idea of getting updates almost instantly.
I also don't think I would need more than 16gb given the use of Google drive and 35gb of Dropbox.
I do however love my phones screen and the community for the One X.
Anyway, I would love to hear people's opinions and have discussions about this as choosing my phone is one of the most important decisions I have to make haha.

Inspite of its design shortcuts and glass back, the n4 is a good deal.
If your device is shot, I'd say get one.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I'm not sure whether I like the idea of a glass back. To be honest, whilst the plastic on my phone is battered the screen is still completely pristine.
Unless it is found to be super fragile, I would welcome the addition of more glass.
Does anyone know how the screen on the n4 compares to the one X?
It's on par with the X, it beats it in certain areas vice versa but One X probably has the better screen that's not saying the IPS on the N4 is bad as it's just as good.
However you lose a bit of screen estate due to the on screen buttons.

Yes most of the reviews state its not as good as all the other phones. But it's decent according to the reviews. Just check out the sample shots on various sites and see if you can live with the results.

I think I have just two more questions. When will it stop receiving updates first? Does the nexus s or galaxy nexus still get updates first or do they have to wait?
Also, how easy it to to root and install kernels etc? The one was a hassle and I had to void my warranty.

Not sure about the first question as I've never had a Nexus device but I'm sure they are still getting updates.
Unlocking a Nexus device is the most simplest simple command and your done, so it should be a breeze installing roms and kernels and shouldn't affect warranty like the HOX does I believe as it's a developers phone end of the day.
I for one will be getting one to try out hopefully on release day if permitting. Getting a bit angry with the HOX battery life it can last me through the day but when I start using it dies quickly.

Good point. The battery will be much better on the N4 since it's a 28nm cpu.
Well honestly.. You seem to have a rugged lifestyle, or is real rough on your phones. I would suggest you get something more like the Casio commando phone.
I don't think the n4 would be good for kids in school, or anything that could possibly harm a glass bodied phone.
But as a backup, out going out phone, sure. Plus the price is right, and wouldn't hurt you too bad if you are stuck in a contract.

I honestly couldn't suggest it, if you do a lot of bike riding, or if it's you're main source of transportation.
You Europeans do a lot more bike riding than us lazy Americans though, I think the price of gas has a lot to do with it.
I remember when I bought my evo, I was floored when I found out that someone in the UK basically paid double what I did, after vat.
My sensation would be great for bike riding, since the gorilla glass screen curves inward to avoid scratches, and the battery cover is the whole phone case, just get a new one for 30 bucks when the old one gets scuffed up. Battery life is meh, though.

Hello all!
Question - As far as I understood - Menu Buttons are on-screen.
That means Menu Buttons are taking a lil' of the 4,7 inch screen?????, so that actually the usable screen without buttons is smthng like 4,6 or so?
Or rephrased:
Is the usable part of screen bigger in the case of the HOX than in Nexus 4?
I don't know what to do to be honest.... i could sell my hox for smthing like nearly 350 Euros, and hopefully i would get a Nexus 4 for it....
But is it really worth???
Pluses of the HOX in my opinion over the Nexus:
1. Sense
2. Screen + Camera
3. Beats Equalizer
4. HOX community
Now... I would change it for a Nexus 4 for the following reasons:
1. Updates directly from Google
2. Phone designed together with google, so it will be their hardware reference when google issues an android upgrade
3. Design (Glass-back)
4. 2gb of RAM and better processor
Now, to be honest I miss iOS in terms of buttery user interface, clean interface, no force-closes, etc.
I don't want to switch again to iOS, but it would be nice to find something alike in an android....
I had the best experience with the HOX for a sense ROM, and with i9100 a very fine experience with CM9.
I am searching for THE Android device.... Is Nexus it?
If not, then I would bet on the next flagship from HTC (not the HOX+, but the next one).
Samsung is totally out of the question due to it's cheap recycled-plastic design!

Kinda have to comment on this. I can GUARANTEE you that within a month or so the Nexus will have better community support, its 75% of the reason i got rid of my HOX and went back to my old Galaxy S. Granted the HOX community is much more established now, but nothing beats Nexus devices for community and devs and so on.

I regret buying this phone.

I had HTC DESIRE HD before n tht i bought this phone n i am super disappointed after buying this phone. I wonder why did u go for this phone. I could hv gone for HTC ONE X+. May b i was drunk that time.
This phone has more ram thn my previous phone. More Cpu Power with 4 cores but still this phone freezes and dsnt perform multi tasking very well.
One thing I hv learned is that samsung phones are nothing but s***. Even the development is limited as sumsung doesnt release the source code. My advice HTC has been and always will be the best touch phone manufacturer.

What rom and kernel was you using?
Did you remove bloatware?
If you were using stock, what version was you on and was it carrier branded (with even more bloatware)?
Sent via TCP/IP
SAMSUNG S series always seem to hold there value quite well like iphone and screen s always good. Like removable battery plus sd card. Never had one x but older HTC phones would always get dust under the screens. Has put me off them for life as I work in dusty environment.
Also battery life on HTC phones really poor

Then go with the One X.
I chose the SGS3 for these reasons:
Way better Quality Control, thinner and lighter, removable battery and SD card, better internals, performance, official updates (doesn't really matter now that I'm on CM10.1), AMOLED screen, no battery life and build quality issues, TW is lighter and closer to stock.
One X is a nice phone, but its just not for me, the only benefit I could see was the camera and thicker plastic.

i have a good friend with HOX. At this moment his phone is one step below mine (quite a big step)
Maybe you've got a lemon or something is wrong with your rom/kernel? I know many S3 have suffered from lag/stutter and such other related things...
I had a HOX before my s3. Both are great devices. HOX multitasking was not good at all, perhaps better in the +version. Only thing i miss a little is that screen, but i enjoy amoled too. S3 handles most games better, except tegra ones of course.

I had Desire HD for 2yrs never had a problem with screen only volume was an issue. Yes removable battery was also a reason i opted for s3 but apart from that it doesnt even come close to one X+.

I had the HOX before the S3 and switched because of the battery life mainly. I much prefer the design of the HOX and, contrary to any review you'll probably read on the web, I found the camera on the HOX quite a bit better.
I'd probably swap my S3 for a HOX+ given the chance, but I'm happy with the S3. It does so many things very well.

Your signature would suggest a degree of prejudice and would cause me to question why you would buy a Samsung phone in the first place. It would certainly suggest that yours is not the most objective of 'reviews'.
In the interests of balance, HTC have produced some decent devices, but as nice as my last HTC (HD2) was, the need to send the phone back three times in just over a year to repair screen issues and the Customer Service debacle that finally drove me away from HTC, swearing never to return, was quite enough to leave me convinced that Samsung, for all their foibles, are an infinitely better option.
The sharp drop in HTC's share price doesn't lie either...
I don't. The phone is great.
Thanks OP for your insight. Unfortunately it seems to me that you are biased. If you like a brand and its products you should stick to them.

I had the same feeling during the first 2 months of using my s3.. UI redraw every time after i exit internet browser, experienced lag here and thr but after i decided to install custom rom and kernel and remove useless bloatware, it suddenly became the best smartphone i ever owned!
This is great phone, 4 core, 1gb ram and external sd card, only thing I don't like is home button and 2 soft key, probably because I came from Galaxy Nexus which uses on screen virtual button, but everything is good
Well, maybe not, except SDS concerns me...

coming from an s3, i think the note 2's battery life is perfect. no need to get extra batteries like i did for s3 and realize they didn't really help
The "review" became irrelevant to me when he took 6 seconds to find his settings in the app drawer versus just using the menu key and going to settings (when he was already on the home screen).

+1
At the time Note 2 was released, these were killer specs and its still a very functional and modern phone. Full HD display is a buzzword of this time and frankly speaking I dont care about it that much. Note 2's display is sharp enough. Full HD display takes its toll on battery and CPU/GPU too.
Larger battery? Boss this is the first Android phone that I have owned which works without charging for two days with quite heavy use. They way you are saying it, even if they had given 5000 mah battery you would have been saying....bah! Only 5000 mah, it should have been 8000 mah at least
I know the more the better but there has to be an appropriate limit. Note 2 is arguably one of the best phones of its time and it still rocks. Sucks is a word you cannot use in its context.
No offence by the way buddy

I do not. I did not even bother watching the video completely. For what this phone gives me, nothing, can beat it. Amazing battery life, fast CPU, sharp screen and decent build quality.. And a stylus with a 5.5" display. What more would you need?
"and I mean like it's kind of a... You know gloss, basically... like a... kind of a cheap material."
I stopped there.

I don't agree. I am using Note 2 from Nov 2012 and this phone gives me everything with best battery life, fast CPU, 5.5" display. Any product or phone, there will always be a positive and negative reviews.. but always need to go through the user opinions..
I think his outlook is a 'glass-half-empty' one.
Glad I don't don't have to spend my time with him... Watching 8:15 minutes of his video made my life seem shorter.
I bought it, used it, owned it, and I liked it everyday I held it, enouff said!!

I had to stop at the point where he says it's slower than his Galaxy S III.
Also I think the plastic thing is old, people still complain about that? If you want an aluminum phone you shouldn't get a Samsung... Why do people even complain about these things after buying a device? Don't they know it's plasticky before they buy it? Does it really come as a surprise?
Yawn..
Note 2 sucks beacause this device has no negative points.

Odd that he complaint slow exit app when he isn't closing an app. That's not the way to exit. That's just minimizing the app. The proper way is the back key which is common in all Android devices and even in Nokia Symbian phones.
