8GB Users - Whats it like? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not to sure if want to spend an extra £40 for 8GB more. So Those with 8GB, how is it?
On my Note 2 16GB I only get about 10GB for using, of which I have only used about 5GB and have 5GB remaining. On the 8GB version of the Nexus 4 how much do you get to play with?
Or is it simply not worth spending time worrying about space and just getting the 16GB?

I have 16GB version, and there is 12.92GB space to play with.
Dspends on how you use your phone, and what you want to store on it....
I would recommend getting 16GB, you may not need space now, but you could need it later on

+1, take a 16GB model or you`ll be sorry afterwards.

I'm using 8GB and it's sufficient for me since I throw my videos/music to my Nexus 7, so I keep only the apps I need on the phone.
However, with WhatsApp implementing the auto image download "feature", if you have contacts who are happy-go-lucky with pictures, you might have to do some house cleaning every now and then.

If you plan on using the N4 as a primary Android device, you'll likely want the 16GB. If you have a tablet however, you may only want certain apps on the N4, and 8GB may suffice in that case.
I plan on having my games on my N10 and "mobile" apps on my N4, so 8GB should be fine in that case for me. I know when I just had my 8GB N7, I found it a pain.

I have ~4gb free on a 8gb. I don't keep videos on my phone, I use pandora for music, I keep ~1gb of podcasts and I don't do any racing/fps gaming. I didn't go 16gb because I honestly didn't see the point, if I'm storing video/games 16gb is going to run out quickly as well (most of my movies are ~8gb and I'm not going to reencode/redownload just for my phone and a lot of the good FPS are 2+ gb.)

Thanks for the replies. I have just deleted the FPSE roms (I hadn't even used them) I had on my Note 2 and I am now only using just over 2GB. So maybe I'll be okay with 8GB.
To be honest I will only be getting one because it's cheap (compared to others), it's unlocked and it can be my device for when I feel like switching to Android.
So I'm selling my Note 2 and going back to the dark side if you like. Apple is calling my name again. But since I'm a switcher, getting a Nexus 4 will mean I can always come back when I want to.
I have no real preference over the two anymore, I like them both in different ways. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I just hate the effort I go through each time to switch. Having two devices will be the better idea.
I have a Nexus 7, which I'm going to give to my mum. But it doesn't offer what I was looking for, thanks to many apps not being available without rooting.

16 isn't enough for me I love Gameloft games though and like the nicer screen of the n4 as com paired to other phoned

16gb, it's worth the extra $50 as Google went way out of their way to force us to use cloud which I will not support. No sd support (it's too complicated for us ), no otg support for some reason lol.

I'd say it's worth the extra $50 for the 16GB model (to be safe) but I am currently on the 8GB model and it's working out just fine for me.
If you're ok with storing things in the cloud you'll be absolutely fine. My dropbox is setup to send all the pictures/videos I take on the phone to the cloud and I use google music to stream all my music. Both services work great and free up my phone for essentially just apps.

I bought the 8GB model from a dude from CL since he was selling cheap.
I don't put any music/videos on my phone so I manage fine for the most part.
Only negative I have is that I don't have as many nandroids as I usually would have.
Unlimited data is much welcomed.

I never see the point in keeping multiple nands bit that's just me. The $50 difference was totally worth it in my eyes. Even if I don't fill my phone its a nice comfy pillow :highfive: plus I am always by my laptop and my n7. (32gb) :good:

Why buy the 32GB?

I've noticed on the threads here that it seems like most people who preordered went for the 32GB model. I was just curious, why? The only thing that used to take up any real space on my Android phone was music, but with Google music now I really can't see a need for more than even 4 or 8GB, so 16 seems like overkill.

Movies, fool lol
For when I go on trips
With Google music, Picasa and Netflix, there really is not need for all that storage. I went with the 16GB, would have even gone with 8 if they offered it.
On my phone, the only thing that takes up any real space is ROM backups, everything else is in the cloud.
Why not?
You don't know if people would like to put photos, documents, offline GPS maps (like CoPilot or Sygic, that can take 2GB easily), "files" (Win32 apps installer, probably you are PC helpdesk / tech support technician), etc.
Streaming music is good and better for space, but probably not all people has "unlimited data" subscription, especially if you are going abroad. 3G would be expensive!
Other strong reason is to be able to "sell" it in the future easier than 16GB, it would be more interesting. Suppose in 2012, there is new Galaxy Tab 3, then it would be easier to sell 32GB at 50%? I don't know, something like that.

I keep full seasons of The Mighty Boosh and It's Always Sunny on hand at all times. Everything else I can watch on Netflix. But occasionally there will be a few movies I want with me when I'm out of town that aren't on Netflix. I agree about the music though. With 20000 songs I can put in the cloud, that'll save me several gigs of space. I got the 32gb version just because you can never have too much space. I wish the UPS man would hurry up and get here lol
Do you guys know if google is going to release something like google music but for movies and videos?

This is definitely true. If you're tethering with your phone's data plan, Although you can download once and store music in your cache, you can only cache as much music as you have space on your internal memory. Even if you download via wifi, space will be an issue

Why buy an SUV when all you do is drive back and forth to the supermarket? Why buy a 5 carat diamond when you can buy 4?
Because you can! And mainly because there is no microSD card.
I still like storing stuff on my device. Not a big cloud person too much to go wrong.
16 GB is enough for me. After 2 SDcards crashed on me, I'm putting everything in the Cloud. As for trips, it will come in handy for watching movies, but I will most likely put no more than 5 movies on it at a time. If I go on a trip to sit and watch movies on my Tab all day, then I could have stayed at home.
If I do walk around the house listening to music, I will most likely do it from my phone. I don't see myself walking around the house listening to music, while holding a Tab.
Good answers guys! Just realized I may be the exception but I've got the Thunderbolt with unlimited hotspot, so streaming isn't an issue. I also stream anything I can't get from Netflix from my Windows Home Server via Orb.
With all that said, I'd probably spend an extra $50 to go to 32GB, but $100 more for an extra 16GB of flash memory just feels like a cash grab to me.

A few of us are importing these which means no Google Music (US only) and no Netflix (US, Canada, other?). Either way I'm pretty sure 32GB will be overkill for me.
There is no such thing as unlimited phone data in Australia
All my data will be stored on the device
For a device with no memory card slot makes sence to get the biggest one possible

I go camping. I still like my toys when I'm out in the woods... I also spend about 5 months a year in Japan for work. My work phone does not have wifi tether. The cloud ain't always available.
Because I accidently clicked the wrong pre-order button?
one other thing you need to realize is that if you plan on putting the tegra 2 to the test with all the new games like ShadowGun, you may need some space since I am pretty sure they wont be so tiny of files
For me the 32GB will be overkill most of the time. But when I travel for work I want to be able to tv episodes with me ... 32GB should get me enough TV to be well worth the $100 premium over a 16GB model.
I filled up my 16GB iPad, so I decided I needed a 32GB Galaxy Tab 10.1 this time.
The cloud is nice, but I'm not always on wifi. And sometimes the cloud is just too slow. I'd much rather have my content local, so it's always there, instantly ready.
I'm with the OP on the lack of need for the extra storage space (also have unlimited wifi tether on the phone), but to each her own I suppose.
Interesting to hear other folks reasoning though....
"640K ought to be enough for anybody"
These devices don't have slots for expandable storage so I think most people are trying to make sure that they don't run into space problems in the future.

thinking about exchanging my 16gb grey one for 32gb

i originally wanted the metallic grey 32gb version, but at the time of launch.. there were none to be found. a local best buy just got a shipment in today, and at the moment, i have 12gb left in my 16gb. that's without any media. i'm planning on putting at least 5gb of music stored locally, 1gb of photos, no movies, a few documents, and ebooks stored locally. i was gonna rely mostly on cloud storage, but thinking about it now.. i'd like to be able to not worry about when/if i am ever not around wifi access or my phone's hotspot signal is weak. do you think i'd be ok with sticking with the 16gb or should i just make the switch to 32gb now, while i'm still within the return/exchange window?
I'm kinda in the same boat. I don't think I will load up mine with too much because I am more of a streaming kind of person but being wifi only I know I am going to need to get some stuff stored locally for traveling and such.
I got the 16 GB version because I'm using the cloud. As for music, I will most likely place my music on my phone's sdcard. That way I can have my music with me even when I don't have my Tab. 9 times out of 10, if my Tab is near me, my phone is near as well.
i am planning to keep this device for a while, so hence why i'm rethinking about the 32gb for a bit more future proofing. at the moment, it is my only computer at home as well..
damn you samsung for not including a micro sd slot!
what do you guys use for cloud storage? i have amazon set up, but haven't used dropbox or google's.. which one do you guys like and any reason why? i'm looking to store mostly my music in the cloud.. and i already buy all my music on amazon, so i think their cloud service is best for me.
i am exchanging mine from 32 to 16. i have cloud music from google and downloaded the equalizer and they sounded amazing!
I bought a 16GB iPad a year ago and thought, this will be enough space. And it was for a few months. But eventually I did fill it up. It wasn't that I filled it all with music or movies. It was just lots of little things, some music, some movies, lots of apps, some big games, lots of small games, manga books, photos. After months and months of use, all this and that starts adding up.
Sure, I don't have to keep everything on there and did have to start uninstall games, removings apps, deleting movies, to make room for new stuff. And my world didn't end. But still, this time I decided I'd rather have more space so I didn't have to make sacrifices.
Cloud is nice, but not everything is in the cloud yet. And some of the iPad game sizes were getting quite big, I imagine Android games will be getting pretty big too.
i would def take it back for the 32 gb. If your questioning yourself about it than you should do it. And yes, you can when they release it buy the adaptor but its just better to have it all on board if you can imo.
I think the 32gb would also have higher resale value too, if you decide to sell it in the future.

Why bother, they will have a quad core 1.5 gig with a 3d screen this fall any ways so I dont think the average life span of owning a tablet will last over 6 months. Might as well keep buying the cheaper models since you wont own it long enough to fill up all the disc space...

As for documents I use DropBox, SugarSync, & GoogleDocs.
I like DropBox because I can easily upload files to their server using the mobile app as well as Android's share feature. It also syncs to the DropBox folder on my laptop.
I like SugarSync because it allows me to select any folder on my laptop, phone, & tablet. It will keep those folders in sync. I can only upload a file using the app. There's no option to upload a file using Andriod's share feature.
I use GoogleDocs but not as much, because it's very picky in regards to uploading files. 50% of the time it reject files I'm uploading from my computer. The thing that gets me is that they're all just basic Word & Excel files.

I agree. The way their steady upgrading specs and increasing performance for up and coming tablets, the life span of this device will probably be 2-3 years, if that.
If someone plans to use 32 GB, then it may be worth the investment. If someone uses less than 16 GB for a 32 GB model, they've just gave Samsung $100 free money. $100 is half the price of a new netbook, which I still could use because tablets can't do everything.

That's like saying: why bother getting a Sandy Bridge computer now when you know Ivy Bridge is around the corner. There's always something better that will come along. You just have to realize when something is right for you at the moment, or else it'll be a never ending cycle and you will never get anything in the end.
Anyway, I did end up exchanging the 16gb for the 32gb, as I do see myself needing the extra storage space in the long run. Thanks everyone for your input!

Take it back and wait for the 32GB?

Before you start... yes.. i know it's a personal decision.. which is why i'm asking YOU. What's would YOU do in my shoes?... let's begin
I bought a 16gb a week ago. I have a ton of accessories coming in tomorrow for it. BGR dropped a screenshot of a 32GB model (along with a Galaxy Nexus II).
http://www.bgr.com/2012/10/03/google-nexus-7-32gb-galaxy-nexus-ii-rumor/
My only complaint about this tablet is the 16GB of storage... so here are the options.
A) Take it back and wait - I still have my xoom wifi with 32gb... which is why i'm spoiled on that storage amount
B) keep it and either sell it or give it away once the new one comes out and buy it outright - My mother or my sister would likely be getting this one while the other got my xoom. I hesitate on this one becuase I'm probably not going to get anything close to what I paid for it.
What would XDA do? chime in.
C) I wouldn't have bought it in the first place if 16GB wasn't enough for me.

If you already have a tablet I'd say return the Nexus and wait for the 32 GB to drop, the thing is we have no idea when it could be. It may be next week, it may be black Friday or it may be Christmas.
I have the 8 GB that I bought a little over a month ago and when I'm sure the 32 GB is readily available (like I can go into staples and buy it) I'm going to sell my 8 GB for it and be happy with it for a while until e next big thing comes out next year.

No, return it and pick up the 32gb one. You've only had it a week and you just found out there is one with larger internal storage coming next week. Office Depot already has it listed on its website, though it's not available for purchase just yet. Staples has it in its warehouse right now waiting for the streetdate. This isn't a case of "Well, the Nexus 10 is coming soon, and there's a new Asus coming next spring", this is a case where you know it's coming in a week or two. Yes, otg storage fixes the issue nicely and cloud storage works great, but if you can do it and not have to go through any amount of serious trouble to do so, why not? It doubles the space you have internally right now in addition to the cloud and otg storage. There literally is no downside to returning it and picking up the newer model aside from having to run setup again. At the very least pay close attention on Monday when Google has their announcement, find out how long a wait it will be to get it. I'm fairly confident it'll be available within a week or two of the announcement.
Return it. 16 is too small. USB OTG is OK but still a pain in the butt.

Again, we're not talking about a theoretical tablet that may be coming someday soon, we're talking about an upgraded Nexus 7 that some lucky people have already been able to buy. I really don't understand some of the posts in this thread talking this guy out of swapping it out, it almost sounds like sour grapes here. "I'm stuck with a 16gb tablet, why should this guy luck out?" You're telling me that, given the chance, you wouldn't wait a couple of days and drive down to wherever you bought your tablet from and exchange it for one with twice the storage at zero cost to you? This may possibly get pushed back just a bit because of the Google announcement being cancelled, but you know it's coming within the next week or so, so go ahead and make the exchange.
Return it and get 32GB, even if you dont use all the storage at least you have it. I pre-ordered my 16GB from play, im now miffed theres a 32GB one as im always short on space. I use OTG but its messy compared to on-board storage, cloud space is all well and good when you have WiFi but frustrating when out and about. Gonna buy a 32GB when they come out then give 16GB to Mrs
More memory = greater power drain? Might be negligible though.
Also, storing tons of apps/media on the device may slow it down.
FWIW, I have had a 32GB SDcard in my Android Smartphone for about a year now, and 20GB is still free.
If both were the same price, I'd get the 32GB version.

UPDATE:
So after calling a local Staples they confirmed they had a 32gb nexus 7 in stock, but no amount of sweet talk would convince the sales lady to let me buy one. She is going to hold one for me until tomorrow morning though. Luckily I found the 32gb Nexus 7 listed at office depots website last night.. mysteriously that listing has disappeared today ... hmmmmm. I will swear to you on my life.. that the listing did in fact exist on the office depot website. Anyway.. it prompted me to list my N7 on which I just returned from selling.
So.. the current state of affairs is the 16gb Nexus is sold (got $220 for it), and staples is currently holding one for me to pick up tomorrow barring any disastrous acts of God or nature.

8GB rather than 16GB?

Anyone else thought about getting the 8GB rather than the 16GB? I've been thinking about it and I will have unlimited everything on straight talk (T-Mobile), and on my 16GB Nexus 7 with lots of games I'm only at about 4GB used as I stream all of my music from Google Music.

I thought 8GB was enough on my Nexus 7, then Google had that 5 day sale thing...
I was going to go with 8GB on the Nexus 4, but after remembering that experience, combined with the discontinuation of the 8GB Nexus 7 (maybe they'll do the same for the N4), and the fact I have enough money leftover from sales, I think I'll go with 16GB

Unless I have a last-minute change of heart, I'm getting the 8GB model. I don't have a huge music library, I don't play games on my phone, and I'd really rather get the photos and videos I take as quickly as possible off the phone and onto someplace that's not as susceptible to loss or breakage. I'm getting a USB OTG cable and I don't think it will be too onerous to use a flash drive for archival storage for stuff I don't need instant/constant access to.

I agree with this. I have an iphone 4s 16gb and barely use 6gbs. Majority of it is just itunes music which I dont even use just put it on the phone for the hell of it. Very very few apps, hardly any games, mainly photos and those are typically transferred onto my computer or icloud back up.
If I do switch back to android this is the device I'll end up. Just dont want to get back into the daily custom rom flashing! and back ups. Thats the reason I left android in the first place. Too many phones!
I've really been back and forth on this. I like the idea of getting it for £239, it appeals to me. But I've used 16gb phone for a while now, consistently using more than half of that in storage.
Of course, not all that was actually used on my phone. I probably had more music than I needed, and the main culprits of storage space were all the nandroid backups, titanium backup and custom Roms I had.
This time, I've decided to go for as long as possible without rooting. Like someone said previously, I'm tired of flashing roms so much, as long as the N4 does what I need out of the
box then that'll do me.
So at the moment I am going for the 8gb, and currently setting up cloud storage for my media.

I am getting 8 GB as well. But since I have to wait till June to get it they might discontinue 8 gb and offer 16 instead fot the same price. I hope

I still hesitate between the two versions.
But.. Actually, 16 Go = 13.6 Go and 8 Go = ???
At first I thought 8gb because I don't listen to music, watch films or play games on my phone. But I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing that the space is there just in case and it'll also make it easier to sell in the future. If it was a lot more expensive to upgrade then I wouldn't, but seeing as it isnt...
There is absolutely no way I can consider 8gb. Im coming from 65gb and the only reason I am able to take a chance on 16 is because with my new unlimited 4g T mobile sevice, I am trusting that play Music will meet all of my needs. I've already used 2gb in 2 days. Also, I plan on converting my Evo 3D into a pmp if necessary when I'm out of reliable coverage.
Will definitely upgrade to if/when 32/64gb becomes available. My distrust of mobile networks comes from my horid experience on Sprint with my premium data, as they called it.

I'll be getting 16gb, most of the phone I've owned till date have only manages to use 8-12gb at max, so I think ill be good with 16 gb

Looking to get a Nexus 4 seeking advice

Hey everyone. Now i've been browsing around my local craigslist and swappa to get myself a 16gb nexus 4 for a good price. I have missed some good deals but today I found a local guy who agreed to sell me his 8gb nexus 4 for 215 bucks. Now assuming the phone is in good condition which it appears to be in the pictures, is this worth it to get the 8gb version? I really don't NEED the 16gb but I usually buy more than I need just for peace of mind, but this deal seems so good it would be worth the sacrifice. Obviously you can't tell me how much space I am going to need but should I consider reduced resale value on the 8gb version or other issues? I currently have 32gb on internal on my iPhone 5 and excluding the system partition I am only using 7.7gb, which I could easily trim down by about 4-5gb if I had any reason to, so it seems as if 8gb is plenty. Let me know what you think about this deal or if I should hold off for a 16gb version.
Thanks.
I went back and forth on the 8 vs 16 issue when I bought my Nexus. I ended up with the 8 and haven't looked back. All of my music is on Google Play, so I stream just about anything I want to listen to and I can always change out playlists every now and then. I also have a couple of games that take up a large amount of space but I haven't had any storage issues as of yet not do I foresee any in the future.
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me as long as it really is in good condition.

That's good to hear since that sounds like my exact situation. I have unlimited data with ATT still and 50gb of Dropbox + google music but my only concern was nandroid backups and roms taking up a lot of space, how does the 8gb fair in this field, I don't have a huge problem keeping only one back up but I always like to have at least one.

I really wouldn't if I were you. I usually hover around 7.5GB from the 16gb model (which is like.. 13.x usable i think) with quite a few apps and 2-3 ROMS plus at least one gapps.
That's something that I can't answer to as I haven't even rooted my device. I haven't really felt a need to since I can't use the LTE hack with at&t in my area. I wouldn't imagine it to be too bad. I never used up much space on my GS3 or my Atrix when I rooted and messed around on those devices.

I really am only considering the 8gb because $215 for a supposedly mint phone with box and charger seems too good for someone liked me who is buying this as a second phone to play with to pass up, especially being a college kid on a budget. I also plan to get the nexus 5 as soon as i can so this will only be with me for ~5 months.
