[Q] Titanium backup issues - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Anyone else having problems restoring apps from old phones on the S4? It sees the apps, but batch backup only wants to restore 3 of them instead of all the missing apps, and when I go into the restore list and click on a missing app with a backup, there's no option to restore it. It's strange because it worked just fine going from my EVO 3D to the S3, but now I've done the same and copied the backup folder from the S3 to the S4 and I can't get it restored. Sent a tech support query to Titanium Track but they haven't replied yet. Any ideas?

Not sure what you have tried so far. Check out this thread. It is older but looks to have some things you can try: http://androidforums.com/international-gsm-galaxy-nexus-all-things-root/464670-titanium-backup-not-restoring-apps-help.html
Maybe try putting it in interactive mode and it might let you restore?

Thanks for the help CCallahan. I tried interactive mode, which didn't help, and I tried auto indirect just for posterity's sake, relaunching titanium every time I changed the setting of course, no dice. One solution mentioned in that thread that caught my attention was changing the USB mode from MTP to camera. I'm at work right now but once I have access to a USB cable to change the setting I'll report back on my results.

I just tested this and have had no issue restoring multiple app backups with TB. I was able to restore 25 apps from 3 year old EVO 4G backups and 43 apps from E4GT backups from last week.
Not sure what the issue could be, but I don't believe it has anything to do with the USB settings as I tried both and it worked each time. I would look at the following:
Make sure your microSD has been formatted correctly. It should be FAT32 and the units should be default or 32KB.
In settings (assuming you're rooted as you're trying to use TB)
Settings>More>Developer options>USB debugging is checkedSettings>More>Security>Uknown sources is checked
Verify that TB does in fact have root permissions (SuperUser>Titanium Backup is on the 'Allow' list)
If it is not one of those, I'm not sure what else it could be. You might uninstall TB and try again.

I had success restoring my S3 TB backup to my S4 by first restoring all the missing apps without data. I then re-booted and went back and restored all data and it seemed to work flawlessly.

Would I be able to restore apps that I had on my nexus 7? or would that not be a good idea seeing as the n7 is a tablet?

Yeah, USB settings didn't make any difference, camera or MTP, same issue. My developer and security options are correctly checked. I also checked my SD card and it's FAT32, but I don't know how to check the allocation unit size on a FAT32 drive ><
Here's some screenshots, hopefully that'll help.

The unit size would be something you would have set when you reformatted your microSD. If you didn't reformat, it would be a good idea to back up all your data to your desktop and reformat now. Sometimes SDs don't pay well going straight from one device to another.
I doubt this matters, but you might change the setting in TB to 2 or more backups and see if that does anything (per your second image).
The only other times I've had issues with TB the way you are was back on MIUI on the OG EVO 4G and every one of those instances was related to a bad download or ROM flash.
Of all the possible issues, my money is on the SD. Have you tried setting your backups to internal storage to see if that makes a difference? (Assuming of course that it is currently set to external storage. ) Other than that, I'm stumped. There is no logical reason it should only restore a few apps at a time other than an SD issue.
Good luck.

You know, I didn't reformat the drive when I swapped it to the S4. I'll try that next, and if that doesn't work I'll transfer the backup folder to the internal storage.
Luckily we can scratch out a bad ROM being the issue for this phone, heh.
I'll be back tonight with the results.

Okay, I copied all of the data off of the SD, reformatted it in FAT32 with 32 kilobyte sectors, copied all the data back on, turned on the phone, and it still won't let me restore.
Next, I'm going to factory reset, delete everything from the SD except the TB folder, and try again. I'll report back once that's done.

If you still have problems on sd card. Formated by phone, setting > storage > format sd card. It should worked fine.

I'm also having the same issue. I have contacted titanium backup and I am still waiting for a response.

A2SD+ and CM7/MIUI

So I've been searching online and I couldn't get any straight answer. Everyone else would rather talk about themes and status bar instead of functionality and performance.
So I just realized that my fascinate, running on MIUI FascinateMTD 1.7.15, doesn't support A2SD+ according to the SD card section on my ROM. I've formatted and partitioned my SDcard (EXT size 1024mb / swap size 256mb) and after rebooting the phone doesn't see or detect the EXT partition. So I ODIN'd my phone back to EB01. Then wipe data/cach/dalvik and re-flashed MIUI FascinateMTD 1.7.15. Then using the blue CWM, I reformatted and repartitioned the SDcard with the same EXT/swap size, then rebooted my phone. Same result. My phone doesn't recognize the EXT partition and it still said that it doesn't support A2SD+ . I tried using S2E and DarkTremor's a2sd but nothing worked.
What gives? Can ANYONE provide some guidance on this?
If I can find an old sdcard to use, I'll look I to it. When you said you formatted to ext, how did you format it? From Linux? Windows 3rd party partition program? Cwm recovery? Etc. Ext2, 3, 4?
You also mentioned functionality and performance, what performance increase you expecting to gain by going a2sd? I ask because there shouldn't be an increase by going a2sd. As for functionality, it should be the same unless you need over 1.5gb for apps which is your internal storage size.
But I don't mind trying to figure it out if I can find an old sdcard.
Uh you'd lose performance if you do A2SD because your internal flash speed is a lot faster.
Functionality being able to move some of the apps (that I don't use every day but will need in the future) over to the SD card freeing up more internal memory (performance).
I used the blue CWM recovery v4.0.0.9 that came with the MIUI Rom and the red CWM recover v2.5.1.x to format and partition the SDcard. I do plan on getting a class 4 SDcard this weekend as soon as I get my paycheck.
Been moving apparently to my class 10 d card with appadmin pro(in the market) for a while now. Is this what you guys are talking about?
Mine also states this, I had started another thread a few days ago.
I took all the steps you are, I finally gave up on what the settings say, I remember reading somewhere that the cm7 port doesn't currently support the sd ext partition, (maybe I dreamt this).
However I was able to move apps to my sd card.

If you get the error about not having enough free space, uninstall and reinstall the app.
I'll also note I believe I first got this error after wiping data and installing miui, then restoring from a miui backup. prior to then I could move apps just fine, however the reason I wiped data was because I got stuck in a boot loop when flashing an update so it could of been the update as well.

At one point, when I was on MIUI 1.7.8, it was still letting me move some apps to the SDcard. However, when I went to Manage Application and onto the "On SD card" tab and selected an app that was supposedly on the SDcard, the MOVE to SD card button is still active (not grayed out) as if it had never been moved in the first place.

I guess I look at that tab as a poor
choice of words, to me it implies these apps "can" be moved to the sd card, the check mark tells you whether it is actually there or not.

Moving your apps to the SD card will not help with performance. The 1.5GB that apps are stored on is used only for apps. If anything, your phone will be slower when using the apps on your SD card.
Sent from my CM7 Fascinate, bro.
I installed an app called Link2SD last night. It was able to detect the 2nd partition, mount it, and make the OS mount it at boot time. It can be formatted as ext2, 3, 4, or even fat32. What it does is it creates a link for apk, dex, and lib files of apps and moves it to the SDcard. So far its serving the purpose. I noticed that the latency isn't bad at all when opening apps from the SDcard. Takes a few seconds longer at most. It will get better when I get a class 4 micro SDcard this weekend. I want to allocate more internal space for frequently used apps, I'm an apps hog so my phone isn't going to perform as I expected it to if it isn't able to hold more apps that I want.
Ok so you want more space for the apps you use frequently so they load faster off of internal memory. That makes sense. I really don't believe that you have over 1.5GB of apps but I suppose its possible.

Freeing up space on the Tab 16GB - which looks more like 13GB than 16!

Looking at the tab 16GB - when I check in storage - it shows only 13.1 GB total available - so it looks like almost 3GB are 'gone'
Has anybody else have the issue?
Is there a way to free up space?
Rest of the space is used for operating system

In short, no. You have a total of 16GB of storage, not 16GB of free available user storage.
So, out of that 16, 3GB is partitioned off for the OS, hence the other 13GB is what is left over for the user.
Is there any of getting most of the 13GB my tab says that there only 4gb left but i cant find what's using it all
A lot of big games usually stick stuff in the /android/data directory thats where i normally find the data usage growing from.

You can use the "Factory Data Reset" in the privacy settings, it will keep root etc... But will nuke everything on the device.
And I mean everything, SD data, everything, it will be how you got it when you first turned the device on out of the box.

Just download disk usage from the play store. It will give you a graphic representation of what is using your storage.

As said above, it's a total of 16GB of space.
AndroZip is really good for finding space hogging dead folders...
I find that when flashing roms, my Spotify local files get forgotten by the app so have to be removed manually, as is the case with many apps....
Doing a factory reset didn't do a thing

What do you mean? Is your SD data still there? Are you using a stock or Custom ROM?

I can confirm this.I am also on CM9 and doing factory reset didin't changer a thing.
But here's what i did to get rid of the unused data :First open file manager HD and then on options (upper right corner) hit the disk analyze
(or something simmilar...translated from Greek). On trhe upper right corner it shows you the available space on your "sdcard".Now connect it to the pc and delete the unnecesary files .
P.S. if you had early gameloft games installed, they created a file called "gameloft" on your sd and when you deleted the .apks the downloaded game data was still there. So if you dont play games as you say delete the whole folder (if any !).
Hope i helped.
Perhaps the fact you're on a custom ROM is why this is not working for you. I'm using a pretty much stock setup.

The only way option in your current situation I think, is for you to have a totally fresh install.
Flash a stock ROM, do the reset, then flash what ever ROM you want, back on to the device ( Or stay on the stock flavour).

[Q] Space/File confusion, help please!

So I'm running CM 10.1 which is running nice. I'm loving the free space that I have and how fast everything is. I made a back up of my rom after setting it up and I've downloaded 2 cm nightly zips. There's the bulk of the space I've used. All of my pictures are on the ext sd card and I have no music on the phone or ext sd card. Now I've posted screen shots below first starting off with titanium stating that I've used 10.2 gb of space with the internal+media. I don't understand that at all. This is where I'm asking for help because that makes no sense. I started using Root Explorer and navigating through the files on the phone and I began to notice that there is copies of copies within folders. You can see with the 2nd screen shot that there is 2 ext sd card files, I don't understand why. The 3rd shows the "sdcard" which I understand is the phones and not my external, and also the storage folder. The 4th pic shows sdcard contents. Remember what that looks like, we'll see that exact group of contents again. The 5th shows the beginning of the storage folder. Now here is where I begin to start to get extremely lost. Emulated, sdcard0, sdcard1, don't understand but okay. The 6th shows inside the emulated folder. Even more lost now with a "0" and "legacy" folder. The 7th pic shows what we saw on pic 4, why is this also here? Pic 8 shows what is in the legacy folder which is the same contents as pic 4 and 7, again why is this duplicated here? The last pic, 9, shows inside the sdcard0 folder which shows the same contents as pic 4,7, and 8. Why? Is my phone making duplicates of files containing loads of space? If so, what is safe to delete so I can keep my storage space free like when I first installed CM. And as far as sdcard1, I looked at the contents and it seems to be my external sd card, just named sdcard1 for some reason.
I understand this is a long and ridiculous post. I have some knowledge of how these things work from when I rom'd my evo 3d. But I swear that phone was nothing like this and I'm completely confused when trying to navigate the S4. I'd appreciate any insight into this. I apologize in advance to my lack of tech knowledge but I thank you for any help anyone can provide!

Not sure why you have 2 extra sd card listing either.
Before you flashed CM did you also format your internal data when wiping? Maybe there's some leftovers from your previous setup.
Everything else looks normal to me, the file system is what it is. The ExtSd card will be the one you can remove from the phone and the sdcard/emulated/0 listing will be the internal storage. I'm not sure why the listings for the internal are repeated but I believe they're all linked to the same folder, I could be wrong.
Everything looks right to me except for that other ExtSd card entry.
TB says you have 10+ available storage, the in parentheses number is how much is left free. If you look under your system settings for storage it will probably say a gig less.
After your Rom installs and takes up system memory you probably have 9.5ish g left, then subtract the backups and roms you said you had in internal memory and your left with 6ish gigs.
I think that's right.
Sent from my SPH-L720
The two internal SD cards. Are the issue from the gs3. Its the new 0 folder format.
Sent from my GT-I9505G using Tapatalk 4
Yes I did format the internal. I had loads of space when I first began with the CM rom. But your logic makes sense. I guess I was looking at it differently or wrongly but I see where you're coming from now. I guess I was just used to my other phone being so straight and simple. Not used to the extra folders everywhere but now I have more of an understanding to why they are the way they are Now I do have two other questions. If i take the backup of the CM build I saved and move it to the extsd card I shouldn't have a problem just navigating to the file using the "restore" function in cwm should I? And my second question would be that I have downloaded the 8/12 nightly zip for CM, that was the one I used to install when I began. This morning I had an update from ROM manager for the 8/13 nightly. I downloaded the zip and flashed it, all is well. While I was browsing through the files I could only find the one 8/13 zip for CM, when I download an update like that through ROM manager, is it replacing the other zip that I already had? I didn't think it worked like that but I'd like to be sure so I can get rid of the old zip to keep space free. Thanks guys for the help!
I'm concerned with that back up also becuase if you look at this screen shot it shows where this back up is saved. Since it's not on the extsd as far as I see, if my phone were to get wiped or screw up and I couldn't access the internal data, I'm assuming I'd lose that back up. Then again I don't know if mnt/shell protects that from happening lol.
Thank you again guys, I'm slowly trying to learn and get the hang of it all

SD usage

Hi guys,
I have an issue with memory space on SD.
When I check usage in ES explorer or in android I can see that only 1.95GB is free and 10.97 is used. But when I check usage of /sdcard it is 5.22GB
Where did the rest of GBs disappeared? I tried to find hidden files but there is nothing significant.
How can I found what is using the rest of my memory? How to clean it? I have tried with some cleaning apps
but with no success.
/sdcard is only the storage you see if you didn't root. Android has other files and folders that's not apart of sdcard.

Hi
The 8GB or 16GB that come with the device are just the total.
To these we must subtract that used by the operating system.
In a nexus of 16G, only 11G is available to the user, the rest uses Android for your stuff.
I hope I have helped you and excuse my English, Google translate helps me.
Saludos!
This is why you don't buy the 8GB but also why you should invest on 16GB, they're trying to promote cloud computing.

How is this going to help me? I know I can format SD but I am trying to find out what is occupying memory.
console -> ./Android 2506248 KB -> 2566397952 Bytes -> 2.39GB
ES exp ->Android 1.19GB -> 1275463754 Bytes -> diff=1290934198 Bytes=1.2GB
It seems that amount of memory is some how doubled????
Am I seeing this wrong or?

It'll help by erasing EVERYTHING on your phone so the usage will be quite reasonable.

Why to erase or change ROM? It is enough to format sdcard... but I want to know the reason...
I am having the exact same issue.
I have the 16GB variant, and after a clean Google stock rom flash, it sees only 5,27GB, just like being an 8GB variant.
How is this possible?

bah, I have reading yesterday and today a lot about this but I cannot find a problem. Some people also have this issue.
1. /sdcard/ (along with /root/ directory and other system-level directory)
2. /storage/emulated/0/
3. /storage/emulated/legacy/
4. /storage/sdcard0/
All of those folders have same memory usage and amount of files 3.38GB but yet 8.96GB is being used, and only 3.96Gb free out of 12.93GB.
What is using 5GB of space I do not know....
EDIT:
When I check properties of a Andorid folder:
1.7GB 1826870517
2811 Files 580 Folders
When I check in console:
3584128kB->3.41GB
3392 Files
When I went on file level...
17952kB->17.53 MB
4249006B->4.05 MB
4934876B->4.70 MB
So directory usage is double then file usage.... how is that?
Hello Rajnus,
Since it seemed that we were the ONLY ones having this issue with our device, and no solution could be seen @ the end of the tunnel, I have sent my LG N4 to LG for service.
The verdict was that the memory chip on the main PCB was faulty, and they replaced it under warranty. I sent it to LG in the morning, and received it the same day in the afternoon.
Phone works flawlessly now, I suggest you take this step.
All the best!
Txn for the info.
Did you got a new phone or just new memory?
Sent from mobile
Nope, unfortunately I did not get a new phone, they just replaced the main PCB, which, of course, affected the device IMEI as well.
Well, I will return to stock ROM and return it to the shop. There is big chance to get a new one because in Austria they do not bother to repair phones...

I have wiped whole memory and it seems fine now. Maybe it was problem in ROM or something....but I will keep my eye on it

Your issue is described below and was not faulty hardware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2033692
The op could be running into the same thing, if I understand the problem correctly, or there are cwm backups taking up additional space.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I already tried the described methods the night before taking it to LG without results.
I even installed AParted to check overall available space, and it too showed ~5,9GB.
I suppose that you have root and custom recovery. Did u check how much space takes all of the backups? info about it is no avaible from android. Just check in recovery, If u use CWM, check option "free unused backup data". Give me feadback if it works for you.
edit.
/mnt/shell/emulated/clokworkmod/backup # du -d 1
4659840 ./2013-09-18.06.06.04
4786000 ./2013-09-22.20.47.46
3698344 ./2013-09-25.14.01.48
13144192
Backups where not the problem. Memory usage was doubled in my case.

I know the PE uses 6,50 GB for the OS

Now I check my internal storage for the rest, I should have 9.50 GB. It says I am using 7.99 GB which does not make sense, I have nothing downloaded on the device, other then the apps, which is says that is using 3.50 GB. I know I can use a SD card, but I would still like to know what is using my memory up. Any suggestions as to where all the storage is, TIA
No suggestions ?? I assume this storage is normal then ??

Do you have a custom recovery and did any backups? I think TWRP counts backups as system data.

Must be a normal thing then. I was surprised my phone also had so much memory taken, but I thought it's because of the recovery. Apparently not...
I'm on Stock MM 6.0, rooted and with TWRP 3.0.0-1 installed, and Andoid OS is taking up 10.82GB on my device.
So your values aren't terribly different from mine. I'm thinking yours is probably normal, then.
Well I decided to add a SD card to my device, and low and held, it allows you the option to use it as internal storage, which is nice, rather then a portable device, which you can also if you choose that. So I like the option of being able to use it as internal. Any reason why I should not do so, before I set it as such ??
@DJB628 I questioned this at first. By making it adoptable (internal) storage, it encrypts the card, so it can't be used on other devices. I have problems with that. Many times, my SD cards have "failed" in the phones, but I was able to use a card reader on pc to see files. I was able to transfer them to new card, put new card in phone, and done..... Can't do that if SD card is adopted to internal storage...

Got it, so keeping it as a portable storage is best :good:
Can't that be done, if the card is formatted and allow you to use it in another device. ??
Crazy I got on here for help bc of the same issue. I haven't installed a micro SD yet. I have the 32g version. Only have 23 apps installed, no music, no pics. Stock rom rooted systemless. Twrp 3.0 with 2 backups made. And somehow I'm already out of storage. I can't figure it out.

Wow that is crazy, something definitely does not make sense. I would call Motorola Tech support to see what they say, I will also next week, to try to make sense of this.
@Carolina_techy
Clearly something is taking up the space. Use a file manager or windows to explore. I bet you have some huge image files or tmp files. How much space is the twrp folder taking up?

I've checked mine both with Explorer and Windows and do not see any files large enough to be using up this much storage.

From what I can tell, it looks like the majority of that is coming from the 2 backups I have. I didn't think they would be that big though.

^^So the issue is resolved?
How much space is it taking up? I image a full image (system, boot, data), uncompressed is probably in the 2-4GB range? You need to enable compression when creating the backups. That saves some room.

Ahh. That is the issue I guess. I didn't enable compression on either backup
