[GUIDE][07/07/11]How to Partition your SD Card

With the GingerSense ROM’s being the new hotness right now, there is a overwhelming amount of questions about partitioning. This guide is intended to help anyone that may want to partition their SD and not sure where to start. This information was gathered from The Mynions and posted several times in Myn’s Warm2p2 and Project Synergy threads. This guide was created while using Project Synergy RC1, which runs a CM script that has been modified. Come get assimilated!
Please, READ first before attempting if you are a noob, it’ll save you some gray(grey) hair. I am in no way responsible for any issues you have for following this guide, use at your own risk.
WARNING: This will erase EVERYTHING on your SD card so please transfer the contents of your SD card to a computer or external hard drive PRIOR TO starting this procedure.
1. Boot into recovery (hopefully you have amonRA v2.3)
2. Select "Partition SD Card". You will be prompted to set an amount for the SWAP, ext2 and FAT.
3. Enter zero for the SWAP size, 1024 or 2048 for ext2 and the rest for FAT*
4. After the process finishes, select "Upgrade ext2 to ext3"
5. When the process is complete, go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it.
6. From the main menu, select USB-MS (your phone should be connected to your PC) and copy the Synergy ROM(or your ROM of choice) to the root of your SD Card.**
7. Flash Synergy(or your ROM of choice)
8. Be patient at initial bootup because it can be quite long.
9. I recommend that your 3rd party apps be installed freshly from the market initially. They will automatically be place in the ext3 partition. You can verify it by checking to see that they are listed in the /system/sd/ folder which itself contains 3 folders: app, app-private & dalvik-cache.
After you have followed the directions to partition your card, followed by a flash of the rom and installation of your 3rd party apps & games, go to Menu-Settings-SD & phone storage and check your available internal storage space. If it is 300+, it is safe to assume that the built-in a2sd is working. Furthermore you will need a system level file manager to see the /system/sd/ folder. The Astro File Manager cannot see it.
*These sizes are only used for reference, but excellent choices. You may want to consider a swap partition, even though the stock HTC kernel does not support it. Future kernel development may take advantage of swap and doing so now can save the hassle of re-partitioning later. Food for thought.
**This guide was done while using THE Project Synergy ROM, however it should work across the board.

F.A.Q.
Q: Do I have to partition my card?
A: No. The main reason people partition is to take advantage of Apps2SD script. This allows for more internal memory and, depending on which version, control over various system settings (Ex.: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7021317&postcount=1).
Q: Do I need to format my SD Card after partition?
A: Actually, no. Will it hurt if you do? No. Creating partitions wipes the SD Card, sets up logical drives(partitions) and formats the space(or you couldn’t write to it). The time consuming part of partitioning is the Card formatting.
Q: Can I run the stock/android A2SD after partitioning?
A: No. The Apps2SD script is different from stock. Using the stock A2SD will give you problems.
Q: Can I do a nand restore after I partition?
A: No. Your SD card's file system has changed and you may experience unfavorable results.

No.. it's just like windows partitions.. Once they are setup you don't have to redo them. Just wipe the data and reinstall...

Since the stock Kernel doesn't support Swap, after first boot, go to terminal, type Su then enter, then type a2sd check.
It will probably say swap not running at boot. It should say that the partition is present and a bunch of other things.
Next type a2sd swappy10 then enter.
Now type a2sd reswap.
If you get an error, you can run a2sd reinstall which will reboot your phone.
Go back to terminal and type Su and then a2sd reswap.
Should be good to go, but you have to run the reswap after every boot til we get custom kernels.

As answered, no. Remember however, when you do a wipe now, include SDEXT if you don't already.

Also might want to add in there to backup your SD to your computer so you won't lose any important files, music, or backups.
And after using cm or darktremmors a2sd do not use the Android a2sd or you will have problems.

If I am already running Synergy but have not done this, can I just follow the steps and reboot phone or do I need to reflash the ROM to take advantage of the benefit? And if I need to reflash, can I just wipe cache and dalvik or is a total wipe required.

You will have to reflash the rom, this WILL erase your entire SD Card. Total wipe required for best results.

one last question... after doing this.. when installing apps from market or whatever... you don't have to run an apps2sd app??? They just automatically install to the sd card???

Well I'm running a 2GB part on the OG 8GB card w/no swap. I always wipe everything when I flash a ROM. When we get custom kernels, i will flash the ROM with at the same time. Then I will get SWAP.

Yes, as long as the ROM you are flashing supports it.

My bag. I will flash the ROM and The kernel at the same time. Since this requires a full wipe(by my standards anyway) I will re-partition then and designate a swap size.

switching to cm7#199.( ended up in cm7#203)

dudes i am planning to switch to #199 cm7.
the plans are...
1) fresh flash #199 with 2.6.32 buzz kernal.
2) dta2sd beta 3,jewz ram script, sd speed increase script(4068) .
3) custom mtd partition with 170mb system and 30 mb cache.
4) data and app to sd ext4.
5) 8gb class 4 sd partitioned to 1gb ext4, 32mb swap, rest with fat32 with a large allocation value.
6) lot of paid app of course.
i need your suggestions ....

Do the mtd partition as you install 199, I got problems when a2sd was already installed, my mtd settings are 140 10, 10mb works fine for cache just make sure you have 06mountdl in your init.d folder otherwise you wont be able to download anything from the market above 10mb in size, if it isn't in the init.d folder you should find it in the cm zip.

dude i haven't heared of init.d folder. pls explain. well i surely plan to give 25 mb cache. if so do i need to care about init.d folder?

so i am a newbee to custom mtd partition. hence i need help about this. how should i need to use the script? i plan to flash it soon after i reboot to #199. only after that i will install my apps.and also gapps. so do i need to take nandroid backup? as i have backups of my app using titanium backup. so i will install every thing later.

Put the files needed on your sd card and write your settings in the txt file.
Run the first part of the mtd partition (wipe system/data/cache and install the first zip, bravo recovery or something like that, reboot your recovery from the advanced setting.
After doing the first step install your fresh copy of cm7 (instead of the nandroid backup) without wiping anything, then run the bravo boot zip and let it boot before installing anything else.
Files from the market, when first downloaded go to your /cache folder which if set to only 10mb would mean you can only download files below 10mb in size, the 06mountdl script deals with this by diverting the downloads elsewhere /data partition I think (not sure), the scripts are found in /system/etc/init.d after installing cyanogen if your cache size is small just check that folder (with root explorer) as a few times I have had to extract 06mountdl from the cm7 zip because it hasn't installed.
All that happens if 06mountdl isn't there is, when you go to the market you'll get an annoying message saying you don't have space left if the filesize of the app is larger than your cache.

Not entirely sure, I know some people say before but its never harmed me doing it after, you may aswell just run it straightaway though after your first reboot. Just in case.
I only use beta 3 as I had problems with beta 4, I don't think there's any noticeable changes between them tbh.

So i ended up in cm7#203. Stable. Fast, like it a lot.
The sad thing is i can't make custom mtd. Every time i ended in a non booting cm7 boot screen. Actually i had to flash froyo 2.2.1 ruu 2 times. Rooted, installed cwm. 2 times. Coz i had done like u said. Flashed custom mtd recovery with mtdpartmap.txt file containing 160 25. Then installed new rom with a reboot of recovery only.also flashed bravo boot. All as you said. Stuck in splash screen. So again tried to flash new rom and kernel from recovery. Still the same after flashing. So again ruu flash. Install custom cwm v5.xxx.partitioned SD. This time the SD got corrupted. So removed custom cwm and put original cwm using fastboot flash. Then partitioned with out errors. And installed cm7#203 from cwm, SD speed increase script,Jews ram script,2.6.35 kernal, latest radio, mediaprofile patch, gapps for 2.3.5 Andy. Rebooted after dalvic wipe. Itz running perfect. Installed s2e app . Moved app,private app, data, to ext.
I think that s2e is more efficient than dta2sd. It is faster, move almost every thing to ext. And internal memory consumption is quite low after app installations(when compared to dta2sd). Also booting and shut down are faster.

[Q] Resize rocovery partition

If I resize my recovery partition on my HD2, is all data on my SD card lost? and would i have to reflash a new NAND ROM?

Repartitioning your internal memory will not affect the data on your sd card in any way.

so i take it the recovery partition clockwork uses it not on that sd card
which leads to my other question, if my rom requires a 169mb recovery and i use a 400mb recovery, will it work?

yes it will work, but you will waste 231mb of rom space. This is because you will set a system partition of 400mb, and load into it 169mb of files, BUT once the rom is running, all your user data, installed apps, etc get put into different partitions. Nothing will use the extra 231mb in the system partition, so it will be completely wasted and unuseable.

bored on my help desk job, was gonna mess with my rom,but if im goin to resize i rather do it at home....lol
think im gonna try the bliss rom, any takes on it?

well you could always flash the rom, play with it, then when you get home, do a cwm backup, change the part size, reflash the rom, then in cwm do an advanced restore and just restore the sd-ext and data partitions. hey presto, system size changed and any settings you configure today will be restored into the new flash.
CAnt comment on the rom, i only use typhoon.

CAUTION; the CWM partition make it is for the SD and it WILL ERASE ALL DATA ON SD , for partition internal memory u have to use other tools on a PC (my favorite its HD2 toolkit)

Typhoon is a cm7 rom. Cm7 roms don't have sense.
I CAN highly recommend it, though. I've been on an older version typhoon for over a month now, and the only bug is the occasional failed video capture. Annoying, but doesn't happen often.

Enabling storage of EXT4 on SD-card

I recently installed a Sense 3.x ROM from the Sensation XL Android 2.3.5 and I got only 9MB of free space. I have an initrd-patcher for ICS and JB, but I doubt that it will work on older versions of android.
Is there a way to make android 2.3.5 use the EXT4 partition on the SD-card?

Yes, you have to flash an a2sd or DataOnExt script after first boot/flashing the rom immediately. Of course, while having an ext partition created beforehand.

and just a little clue to help out a little bit
its in the second post of the thread that Marvlesz link to

I used initrd_patcher_v2 on Gingerbread 2.3.7 and it's worked fine. So it should work on GB 2.3.5 as well. Remember to make an EXT4 partition on your SD before any installation, via recovery, and remove any script like a2sd from zip ROM.

I tried running it on my system, but freezes up just before boot-animation.
I use the SENSATION XL ROM V 3.0 STOCK from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316632&highlight=sensation+all+in+one
I can't seem to find any a2sd-scripts in the ROM zip, but there's a sd-ext folder inside the ZIP.

You don't understand, I mean can you format you phone and install this rom again with my advices?
Did you made an EXT4 partition of 1GB or more, with Mini Tool (free), on your sd BEFORE fresh installation of this ROM?
I checked your ROM and the script (apps2sd) is already in that ROM so you probably make a wrong Installation.

I do understand what you say. I made a task29, clk repartition and recovery from hd2toolkit. Under installation the installer asks if I have 1024mb us model or 512mb EU version. I selected the EU version, as this is the one I have. The only question it asks me is if I have magldr or clk.
After that it returns to clk recovery and I press reboot now. I have created the ext4 partition before I even tried installing android the very first time.
If you want, I can perform a new installation with a video recording to document the process

Do not use CLK or HD2toolkit this time.
I will recommend to do in this way, before touch your phone format your SD with GUIFORMAT (look here on XDA for it) in FAT32 normal mode (no quick), after format the SD use Mini Tool and make a ext4 partition of 2gb (2048mb) at the end of the SD, so when you look at the partition the ext partition have to be at the right side of you. Put inside the SD the zip of Sensation XL 3.0 only, do not do anything else with your sd.
Format your Phone with Task29, reboot in Bootloader,
Flash MAGLDR 1.13 for HD2,
From MAGLDR 1.13 via USB Flasher flash the Recovery Touch Beta 8, (I provided you the Recovery ready for you, unzip and flash)
Reboot in MAGLDR,
put the SD into the Phone,
run Recovery,
Do a wipe data and wipe cache partition and wipe dalvick cache,
Install from sd the zip via recovery,
In Aroma do not select any option if you don't know anything about it, the installation will recognize the EXT4 partition automatically and you ready to GO, GO, GO.

My questions:
1. in description of tytungs Rom is stated that NAND version is for USA T-mobile so I assume that with my international version I have to use the other two versions and if so then the only way to install it is using aurora installer?
2. Nevertheless I tried NAND version installed it using CWM but then it got stuck on loading screen, could this problem be solved by this patch? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=40623956&postcount=821
3. Is it possible to use Rom Manager to install this Rom? I have only tried CWM method and this one seems also really easy to use.

Nand is divided into two: 1- Pure Nand (EVERYTHING is on the NAND of the device) and 2- Nand with DataOnExt (as the name implies, some of the data will be stored on an EXT partition on your SD card).
Since the international version of the HD2 only has about half a gig of storage, if you fit everything into the NAND you won't have enough space left for you to install apps and whatnot. If you want it on NAND, you need to choose the second option (some data on the sdcard), but you need to make sure you have an EXT partition on your sd card first (if you don't know how to make one, search).
And "aurora" (you mean aroma*) is just a path, it IS like you said THE installer. It's got nothing to do with your installation. It is just a fancy make-up for the old installation method. Yes, you'll have to use it.

No, that patch is for something else. Your problem is different.
If you mean:
1- NAND Only, then you may have not made enough partition space for the system. (Either way, you shouldn't use this one, use NAND WITH dataonext).
but if you mean 1- NAND with DataOnExt, then it is either your partition size is too small or you do not have a proper sdcard ext partition.

It's the same thing. When you select "Install ROM" in ROM Manager, it will actually reboot your device into CWM and you will have to follow the steps of Aroma as well. Yes, you can use it if you have cLK bootloader and not magldr.

No, Aroma is *included* in the .zip file of the ROM. Just download the ROM, flash from recovery normally but instead of the usual text of procedure, you'll see a fancy screen where you get to configure the ROM before it is installed.
In my opinion, yes, 1GB is more than enough.

CWM is independent from the ROM you install.
If you are talking about "boot into recovery" from within the ROM, that's a rom's feature and does not have to be included in it. You can reach the recovery by rebooting your phone into MAGLDR and then choosing the option AD. Recovery or something like that.

Just to add a little to Marvlesz's answer, reboot into recovery/bootloader on any ROM will just reboot the phone normally if you have MAGLDR. To access CWM just hold power for the MAGLDR menu then select 8. AD Recovery. If you use cLK on the other hand, reboot into recovery does work if I'm not mistaken.

I tried to install this ROM using various settings (DataOnExt / Native SD, wipe/no wipe, magldr / ppp...) but phone always ends up rebooting itself after htc loading screen. I did partition SD card to FAT 32 (primary) and 1GB EXT4 (primary).
What could be the problem and how to solve it?

What /system partition size did you use? Make sure it's big enough for the ROM you're trying to flash.

EXT4 = 1GB. I partitioned SD card with Mini Tool Partition Wizard, then copied Zip on SD card, wiped data (factory reset + dalvik) installed ROM. To me it feels like I did everything according to instructions...

No, not your SD EXT partition, the partition you flashed when flashing CWM.

To create that, go to wherever your CWM thing is stored on your PC, open the CWM folder, open the file flash.cfg (not flash.cfg.txt.) in notepad (it should open in this way automatically) then change the value next to the line beginning 'SYSTEM...' from 150 to 285, keeping everything else exactly the same.
