[Q]Bricked S4. How to get to ADB if it S4 wont boot - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I got my phone rooted, and wanted to try the Per app PDI using Xposed framework. Unfortunately upon installing the framework, my phone will not boot any more (stuck at ATT logo). I saw on the Xposed framework that I can try copying /system/bin/app_process.orig back to /system/bin/app_process, but can't seem to get into ADB. Can someone help please?

You dun goofed. Try rebooting into recovery mode by holding down Vol up+Home before the Samsung logo comes up, and hit "wipe data/factory reset", but if it was a framework mod, then it's likely a problem with the /system/ partition. In that case, you're out of luck until we have an Odin-flashable factory image prepared.

Woot woot, but be a tad more careful next time

After trying Xposed, I couldn't enable the framework, I got the same issue of the phone hanging at the AT&T logo, and tried a factory reset. Now I get "Unfortunately, Settings has failed to load." after completing the setup wizard. USB debugging is no longer enabled due to the reset. Any way around the setup wizard or suggestions?

People need to quit trying to install Xposed?
Looks like for you, it's a system issue. Try performing another factory reset (you never know), and clear the cache.
Are you able to access anything after you complete the setup wizard?

What error do you get when the factory reset fails? As for a zip file, we don't have any flashable system images yet, our devs are working on it, but when it's ready, you'll be able to use Odin to repair your device.
On a side note, I live 5 miles away from the national Samsung warranty repair facility in Richardson, TX, and they sell accessories at their front desk, so I went today to get a super cheap MicroSD card (32gb for $18.99). I chatted it up with a technician that works there, he's serviced my old Nexus S and Galaxy Note, and he mentioned that while they have a system image for the S4s, it's only for the international model, they're not expecting any fubar S4s until next week

Unfortunately that won't work, the flash will fail. The stock recovery can't accept any packages that aren't signed by Samsung. If we had an unlocked bootloader, we could have a custom recovery, and ergo, the ability to install custom packages, but at the moment, there's no purpose for recovery aside from performing a factory reset .
On that note, if your cache is failing to wipe just by hitting factory reset, try wiping it using the separate option, but it looks like your device is currently out for the count regardless. Thems the breaks, sorry

Roms were available almost right away due to the unlocked bootloader of the GT-i9500/5, but At&t and Verizon decided that they want to rile some people up.
As for the i337m, it's the Virgin mobile version. While it contains the same processor and chipset, the bootloaders are different, and thus, flashing anything for the i337m would screw the device up even more

Stuck on Samsung Logo

Hey guys,
I have an S4 that is stuck on the Samsung logo. I have left it for over an hour at a stretch with nothing happening except the phone is smoking hot.
I have booted into Recovery (stock) and wiped the cache and rebooted with the same result.
I am completely stock and unrooted ... any ideas?
I would try a factory reset in recovery

See the Samsung guy at any Best Buy. He has the Samsung Tool and will reflash it for free. You will be back to MK2. Easier than fiddling with various fixes. This happened to my wife's Sgh-i747. Init.d prop build error. Recovery flashing updates didn't work. Odin didn't work. Kies same.

Just re-flash the stock firmware from odin. Use the pda button, check auto-restart and f reset flags only. Use PDA button to browse to the downloaded IMG file. You can get your stock firmware from Samsung-updates.com . just make sure you get the i337m or the i337 (whichever you have, as they are not the same) for your region.

So you say LTE dropped and you did another factory reset? If your APN settings are correct, then this shouldn't be happening unless there's a data block set on your account with your carrier. In this case, I would say something is wrong with the modem on your phone.

Figured out that it was the microSD card that was causing the issue. I used the program App2SD to move programs from my main memory to run them on the SD card. Somehow the files that were moved over corrupted the boot sequence somehow. Total chance that I removed the card to send out for warranty repair and tried to boot it one last time.

[Q] Help! Phone bricked itself trying to update. Factory Reset isn't helping!

Last night my phone wanted to update to 4.4.4 because it's been wanting to for a while, but I know it wouldn't work because my phone is rooted. It had tried this at least 3 times before and everything was fine; download update, tries to install, fails, boots right back up. I wanted to get rid of the Update notification in the top bar, so I just ran it again thinking it'd be okay. Well, this time it bricked my phone, leaving me at a neverending loop at the boot animation. I first tried to wipe the cache and dalvik cache, which did nothing. Then I tried a factory restore, which also did nothing. Then I reinstalled the stock 4.4.3 rom I had been using, which did nothing. Then I wiped the SD card completely and reinstalled a stock 4.4.4 rom through sideload, which has done nothing. My phone just sits at the boot animation and taunts me. Worse yet, I have a 16-hour drive tomorrow and my phone was going to be the majority of my sanity during that time.
What should I do?? Is there anything I can do? Normally I would just contact Google to get a replacement (I've done this before when the 4.2 update was causing a lot of bricks,I think it was 4.2 anyway, I forgot) but I'd like to have a working phone for my 16 hour trip..... if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
Well, I never had heard of any devices that still stuck in the bootanimation after flashing the factory image. There is something really wrong.
Did you already tried flashing a custom rom? Can you boot into recovery?

I had a Vanir 4.4.3 rom on my phone that I tried to flash as well, but for some reason it went right into "Optimizing Apps" after the first boot, something I hadn't seen before. Then it got stuck at "Starting Apps...", then after a restart, it too was stuck at the boot animation.
I can boot into recovery luckily, but that's all I can do. I have CWMR v6.0.3.5. I've tried just about everything I can think of. [edit] I was able to contact Google for some live chat support and am now #2 in the queue. Hopefully they can either help me or get a replacement going. Either way, I'd still love any help you guys can give me, I'd really like to get it fixed rather than waiting for a replacement.
Okay, try this: Wipe everything via recovery and with everything i mean really everything! Cache, dalvik, storage, your whole system. There must be nothing left on your phone. Then flash a rom of your choice. Wipe cache and dalvik afterwards and see if it works

I've done that already, Factory Reset + wipe cache + wipe dalvik cache + format system/data/cache/sdcard/data/media. The phone was completely bare and that's when I sideloaded the stock 4.4.4 rom (otherwise it's stuck at the Google boot screen). I'll try it again, though.
Okay right now I'm using the Nexus Toolkit to flash the stock 4.4.4 .tgz image directly from google and unroot my phone (checking the option that the phone is Soft-bricked/Bootloop.
....Okay that finished and I'm still stuck at the boot animation and now I don't have CWMR. ****. [EDIT] But I can still boot into a custom recovery through the toolkit, which is good.

Damn, I really am stumped right now. That's really strange. Normally everything should be fine after a factory reset...
I've search several threads with bootloop problems, but none of them have this persistent bootloop. I believe you have damage your storage somehow, so that the system can't read the files and boot up properly. Maybe because of this 4.4.4 OTA update. Man, that's kinda sucks right now...

Hm, I didn't think I'd need to with the factory image, but I'll try that. I tried the 4.4.3 factory image as well but that didn't work either. I also can't find anything about the LG Flashtool that's Nexus 4 specific, but I'll try to look more into it.
Wait, how do I flash the binaries since they're .tgz files?

This is really strange man. Flashing stock ROM is the last resort but even that seems to be failing for you.
Have you tried downloading the stockRom again (just to make sure it isn't corrupted). Also, maybe you can try using TWRP instead of CWM this time.
Good luck.

No need to flash them, since you are on a factory image, sry.
Woah now, I've made progress! Maybe.... Anyway, in TWRP, I "fixed permissions" and mounted "system" but now I'm at the "Android is Upgrading, Optimizing Apps - Starting Apps" screen again (it only had to optimize 23 apps?). I was at this issue before when I was flashing roms last night trying to fix it, but going back to here is better than not getting it to boot at all. What else should I try next?
Note: I'm on the 4.4.4 factory image now and TWRP is just temporary through the Nexus Root Toolkit.

What about custom ROM? Cyanogenmod maybe? Make sure to downlaod the M7-Release.
Hm, alright, I'll give that a shot.
On a side note, is there a way to lock the bootloader again while in either recovery or bootloader? I fear that if it's unlocked, I won't get the $250 refund for the replacement.

[Q] Modified Platform.xml most apps crash and phone is unuseable

Hey guys, I'm having a serious problem with my Note 3 running kitkat, I attempted to modify the platform.xml and I don't exactly know what I did but i was attempting to allow apps to write to my external SD card, but I didn't change the permissions on it now the device literally is as about as useful as a brick.
-It will not run apps
-Internet doesn't work
-Various other problems
I've had a look at some other threads but my knowledge on androids is quite little, It was rooted by a friend who didn't exactly explain Rom's for android. So I'm wondering what I can do because I have some important things on my phone I do not want to loose, and from what i'm aware of a factory reset isn't the best option, if there's a way other than factory restoring it, I did see another solution with using ADB I think it was but i'm sure there is another way I can fix it. Note: Cannot browse any files or modify them they're not visible.
Thanks
Edit: Tried a factory restore from the restore menu I had with the root called CWM-base recovery same issue still popped up.
2nd Edit: Fixed the issue wasn't easy(This is for the people that have the same issue) I basically used android debug bridge to install root explorer, just download the android SDK from google and look up a tutorial on how to install apps, I modified the xml file to a stock one I had in the /system before I modified it, due to the apps crashing nothing would open so I couldn't do this, after that I restarted the phone made sure the apps crashed again, this was a good thing that they crashed, all I did after that was a factory reset never lost app data or my text files, everything is working and thank you guys for the help Some of my apps were gone but I had written them down so yeah, it was an annoying issue not exactly an easy fix b ut it works.
Hey. If u perform data wipe in recovery, u do not lose any files from your phone so this should be safe.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to fix the problem with XML file, but u can safely wipe your phone or reflash your rom.

"data wipe in recovery" By this do you mean the volume up + volume down + home till you get to the menu and press the restore? I just read this somewhere sorry for the noob question?
U press home +volume up +power button combo, until it reboots into recovery. Then you select wipe and factory reset or similar option. Just do not perform perform any formats, cause that's what erases your data. fingers crossed!

Always remember to have your phone over 30-40% of battery when u go to recovery to avoid your phone going off when messing with your phone
If u can get your phone to recovery, you can try to copy important files from there to your of and completely wipe everything and flash a new ROM.

So once my phone comes back on I can do a factory reset and hope for the best? I don't really want all of my apps to go or anything i've installed on the actual device, so when I do a factory reset will this remove everything i've got, i'm not entirely sure how i'd copy the files on to my pc because I couldn't browse anything on the device last time i plugged it in after I modified the platform.xml
You will keep your files but all the apps will be removed, so you will need to install them back. Probably you could copy the file you messed up from someone else and try to get tour phone back up but I am not sure how to do it.

Ok thanks a ton for the help, I'm going to see if there's a way to use the adb utility to pull the file I damaged get a stock one and push it, I don't know if it will work but i'll give it a go, or should I just do a factory reset? Did the factory restore, via the boot thing same issue and the stupid app crashing, I'm puzzled on what to do. Any other solutions I'm concerned my phone is literallly broken now.
Factory reset does only reformat cache, Dalvik and data partition. If you tinkered with your system one and rendered something useless, it won't help you at all to do a factory reset. It just does not touch the normally READ ONLY system. If you wanna fix it, and you have no setting to fix permissions in TWRP/CWM you have to reflash the system, either by reflashing the custom ROM you used from there or by using Odin and flashing the original system back to it. This is why you ALWAYS should have a TWRP (or if you really think about outdated stuff... CWM) FULL backup ready and armed.

Didn't think about fixing permissions. Worth giving it a try.

Broken digitalizer, trying to backup data.

Hello guys, I've been sitting in front of computer this last 3 hours trying to figure out how to recover data from my S4, GT-i9505.
I'm using CyanogenMod 11 o 12, it's Android Lollipop, TWRP recovery, don't know if rooted. The digitalizer is dead, black screen, no touch input at all and it's pattern locked, but I think I managed to change to a password with Google Device Manager.
Now the things I've already tried and didn't work:
- Connected the mobile via USB. It shows up on My Computer, Samsung Kies etc, but nothing appears.
- Kies recognizes it, but just loops on Conecting...
- ADB doesn't even recognize it as a device, but my LG G4 does. I do remember enabling debug USB on S4, but I can't confirm.
- I have gone through the install and reinstall USB drivers hell, tried with Samsung alone, ADB alone and with both at the same time, nothing.
- Tried to access data with recovery and download modes. You never know.
After all of this, the only thing that comes to my mind is trying to use another recovery wich hopefully doesn't wipe the phone so I can dump data to the SD card with Volume buttons.
Do you guys can throw to me some knowledge or other ideas? I would be very grateful.
Little PS: I tried to post some screenshots, but new account and anti-spam happens :/
You mean using another recovery.
Bootloaders and recoveries are different things.
You could use CWM, which operates with the hardware buttons.

Yes, sorry. I was just fed up and took a little rest after this post. Do you think that might work? Using another recovery for backup without wiping any data?

Changing recoveries doesn't require wiping data.
The problem afterwards would be extracting said data from the backup.

What caused the soft brick?

Ok, I sold my S4 i9505 (rooted and stock firmware 5.0.1) on evilbay and it was working perfectly when I sent it. 10 days after it got to the buyer they say it won't boot and want to return the phone. I'm extremely suspicious and would like to know if it is possible to find out if they have installed something they shouldn't have. A phone doesn't suddenly soft brick itself or does it?

I assume bootloop, because she said it was "constantly stuck in re-boot" . She apparently managed to get into Recovery Mode. I haven't got the phone back yet, but wanted to make sure I got all the info beforehand.

Have you done a full wipe before you give it away? Maybe wiped the system partition?

I did a full factory reset and did a quick test boot afterwards - all was ok. I may have wiped the cache partition but I'm pretty certain that that I didn't delete the system partition.
Does it has guarantee? When yes how long it left.
If you get the phone back I would flash a stock rom from sammobile with Odin, reboot and if it comes to the setup wizard you can give it her back .

Ultimately that's what I'll do, but I won't be sending it back to her. I'm already £££s out of pocket.
Honestly, I think she played about with it and messed it up. It took her 10 days to contact me. And since I booted the phone to the setup screen before I shipped it and it was working fine.
But I would like to know if it's possible to find out if and what she did and subsequently prove that
