[Q] ATT S4, Feels choppy ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I'm not sure if there is too much crap in the default kernel, or if the cpu is being underclocked somewhere. But this 'feels' choppier to me then the S3 ever did which should not be the case. I can be in facebook and just scrolling along and poof .5 sec lag then it jumps ahead of where I wanted to go, and I am seeing this all over. Even in the play store installing apps. Suggestions ?

Yeah my note 2 feels smoother at stock BUT the S4 is smoother than my note 2 with any custom rom. Very odd.

yes i notice this very much. i have rooted mine as per the motosomething posted on the forum and disabled most services in titanium backup but still, there is a bit of studder/lag. its not 100% smooth as i was expecting out of a phone with a 1.9GHZ quad core processor and 2gb ddr3 ram!!!

Note 2 stock uses full potential of exynos. Custom Roms doesnt since exynos source not released

And that sucks it kindof got me rethinking about purchasing this at the moment with all these lag threads everywhere

The htc one is smoother but it has zero features. I still like the s4 with or without lag.

Guys just give it a minute. They could release an OTA update that fixes it. Remember it's 4.2.x not all apps are meant for it.

I personally want to thank all of the Guinea Pigs for helping to sort through all of the early release issues so mine will be a much better experience when I finally buy it.

I'm sure its do to apps not being optimized for it yet. I looked at what was using all of my memory and there was my good ole xda premium app at the top of the list. Lol. My one I had felt faster but I say give it time. I remember my note 2 had a couple updates within the first month or two. I could care less BC I live this phone.

Turn on power savings and see if it is snappier. It feels to me like it is. Very odd but maybe its just me.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337

Thank God it's not just me. I just exchanged the One that I bought on the 23rd for the S4 today and noticed a bunch of lag. Kind of upsetting. All the reviews I watched there was no lag at all. The One and the S4 have the same chip but the One is clocked at 1.7. Doesn't make any sense that it's snappier than the S4. I REALLY hope I don't regret my decision because the One I had was very good quality control wise..

I've noticed a bit of a slow down when unlocking from the lock screen and opening the app drawer. Nothing major but pretty annoying. The One I traded in today had nothing like that. Oh well.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda app-developers app

I also experience lag on my gs4. Not terrible, but my gs3 is faster in everyday use.

It's gotta be able to be fixed through an update right? If it's happening to all of us..

My international exynos I9500 has a bunch of lag also so don't feel bad guys. My guess is that it has to do with the 4.2 Jellybean. That version is pretty much optimized for the Nexus 4 (which I had) and had almost zero lag. That was probably the snappiest android device I've used along with the Note 2.
The HTC One is still on 4.1 so my guess once it's updated to 4.2 it will lag just the same until the overlays are optimized for it (Sense and TW).
In this meantime it's kinda bullsh1t that a phone with this much power still has more lag than a prior gen Galaxy S3.

I use a note 2 and I see the lag in the s4. A new "flagship" device shouldn't have this much lag on it even with all the bloat... The s3 didn't even lag like this which is kinda sad.

projectbutter makes the s3 amazing

I am really surprised at how amazing jelly bean really is on the s3, with ics it was fast and smooth already but now it blazes.
it is faster and smoother than my iphone 4s on ios6 and my wp7.5 hd7 of old which now belongs to my brothwe. it equals in smoothness that of my iPad 3 and in many ways is faster add depending on the app it generally opens them faster.
it is s real winner. battery life could be better but I'm more than happy at the moment and it was well worth the wait!

The official version is indeed better than the leaks we got earlier, and gives me hope that the later versions are going to be even better, not to mention 4.1.2 and 4.2.

I have both. I think that the SGS3 was already faster on ICS than the gnexus on JB. The gnexus is slower to load apps and lag a lot on places like the widgets menu.
I can only recommend Paranoid Android on the S3, I'm simply amazed by this ROM...

That's your opinion. I've tried both, and the S3 is faster, and better imo.
Certainly on AOSP it is without a doubt, ill always choose AOSP first and foremost now there can be no going back to Sammy ROM's only as a secondary ROM, i can live without FM Radio (i always use Tune in Radio PRO anyway much better highly recommended app) and other small things you don't get IN AOSP the good far outweighs the bad.
I have to agree Project Butter is a lot better than in the leaks, but there is optimization to do, like the widgets draw, which still lags until it is fully pulled into memory.
I can't wait to see what the updates have to offer.
And would u mind telling us how u managed with the freaky lag we get when we try to open phone dialer after it being closed 4 a while? Why do they call it a phone when the thng it does the worst is opening the phone app!
Just be thankful you don't have the WiFi issue that it gave me.
Beforehand, no problem connecting to the WiFi.
Now, I have had to disabled "power saving mode" in the menu *#0011#, because whereas previously on ICS, it would connect if the WiFi got dropped (say, it went to sleep, or I disabled it), unless I do this, if it gets dropped, it would not reconnect until I reset the phone.
Very, very annoying.
I've raised the Issue with Samsung.

Wow! Google should have never brought project butter up in the first place. Now we have some weirdos having a weird placebo effect thinking that the GS3 firmware does not incorporate PB when it would be absolutely retarded and more difficult for Samsung to take it out of the source code and add in half butter. That is like the most hilarious thing I have ever heard. No developer would rewrite PB to operate at half.
There is a possibility that touchwiz animations do not look as smooth as AOSP animations to some eyes but I highly HIGHLY doubt it that they would change the genetic code. lol
People need to stop tripping or otherwise Google is not going to even bring up any transition improvements to prevent this crap from happening to their OEMs that use Android skins.

Will I still get all the goodies like 60 fps and other stuff on nova launcher instead of touchwiz?

Note Gurus. Is the Note still a good phone to get?

I am on my way to get myself a Galaxy Note-1 because they are giving it away for free. I don't play games or do any heavy duty stuff and I don't want to spend too much either. I am coming from an EVO so this should be an upgrade, right? Come on, push me towards this already. :fingers-crossed:

Its a good phone with great development still !
Stock ICS is okay-ish, But whack in a custom kernel (essential) and it will make a massive difference, Besides, there are some awesome JellyBean leaks out now with tons of features so theres no point even thinking about ICS.... its history.
However, If you had that little extra $$$ why not consider getting the Note 2 ? there are some deals in the UK where the phone is free, but the montly payment is around £35 GBP
I assume thats what you meant by free right ? cause if someone is actually giving you this for free with NO contract at all....... TAKE IT !!!!
Note is always a good phone to buy even after 6 months from now. For now it has enough power that is needed by a tab or phone....
I am using it for the past 9 months and is still on stock ics 4.0.4 and its working way too perfect for me no lags or hangs. Still a best choice at a now reasonable price. Go for it.

They stick their half-assed Gingerbread UI to ICS, made performance worse, and totally makes a total mess that makes Note completely horriffic to use.

I have some old people that are rocking ics just fine. Its all relative, some better experience on ics, some gb, some jb.
Personally I was dissapointed with ics cause it would better utilize the hardware then gb. Considering the hardware integration in OS functionality, it wasnt to great. Android wide problem.
Problem I have JB is the ram bloitedness. The phone slows doen when apps are loaded, whilst theoretically this shouldnt be the case for android OS.
I notice the degradation of its specs in performance. So if your going to buy something that should last I'd recommend buying the newest stuff.
However if you do light browsing, no multitasking, then this is a perfect device, now also cheaper.
If you do multitasking, even with supercharging and bulletprooving apps you will find loads of reloads when switching apps. Kinda sickens me, why load it in memory if it cant keep the state properly (apple can do this)... The newest leaks look promising, but they will lag.. Then again if youre a light user it should be fine.
I noticed I almost never use pc when I got this phone.

Yep, TW-ICS really sucked.
Have not noticed any of the ram problems you have mentioned although I haven't been on JB-TW for a very long time.Try CM10.1.The new builds are very good !
Ics dont suck at all. The earlier releases of ics had some issues but those that are released late like in the regions of india pakistan and middle east. Its working way too perfect, with no ram leaks and plenty unused memory. They fixed the battery and other issues. Yes the notification menu is almost same as was in the GB. But overall a better experience than GB.

I cannot understand why some people say that ICS on the Note sucks. In fact it runs smoothly, it's stable, no problems at all. The only disadvantage of ICS is the brickbug. JB on the other hand is still in beta stage. If you go for JB you will have to deal with force closed app, sudden sleep of death, bootloops and the like. JB on the Note is not ready to be used as everydays rom. It's not yet reliable.

Nexus 4: the most lagfree android device?

Hi all, the nexus 4 is the devices that I want to buy, but I wanted to ask you something: is it the most lagfree device avaible in the market? How is it after installing many apps? I've read in many reviews that's the smoothest android device, but I would like some confirmations
PS: I have a galaxy ace and I know that the nexus 4 will definitely be a super-upgrade
I've got about 100 or so installed apps and it works just fine.
Edit: just checked. I have 129 apps.
From a Nexus 4 bathing in Jelly Beans
Its definitely one of the fastest out there if not the fastest. The pure Google experience that you get with the phone is awesome. If you like to flash your phone there's a huge variety of roms that can be personalized to the tiniest details, and with the right combination of a rom and a decent kernel you will forget what lag is.

With a nexus 4 you won't "need" to flash anything, you can do it if you want some extra customizations, but even the stock rom is lag free. Install apex or nova launcher and boost animation/window speed, and you'll get an even snappier experience.

I played with HTC One which is claimed to be the fastest, smoothest, and powerful Android phone. Yes it is! But sometimes you will have the stutter feeling when opening apps, just sometimes though, and it is somewhat unpredictable. its fast but not quite like a Nexus. you have to experience it to know what i mean. plus most apps are developed based on a Nexus, so yeah you'll have the best experience.
I have about 113 apps and still no lag. stock everything until last week i flashed franco kernel. planning to jump onto cyanogenmod tomorrow.
With all the things you say, you make me desire more and more the nexus!
I'm on stock, unlocked and rooted with 700hrs of up-time so far, no crashes other than a couple of 3rd party apps and no lag whatsoever =)

hey man, I came from cooper too and now I have an N4. It's a really good phone, specially when you flash franco's kernel and CM10.1 nightlys (yeah, you don't have anymore to wait updates from Maclaw, OldDroid or biel ). Battery life is good, and with franco kernel it's even better.
All the UI and system apps are really smooth, but when using some apps it's a pain to scrool (apps's fault). Videos and music also play without interruptions. Buy it, you will not regret.
Well I also have a note 10.1 and I'm not sure I'm noticing the lag you're talking about in the facebook app...

I don't think what you are describing is lag caused by the Nexus 4...
It's lag caused by your data speed.
With your facebook example, scolling sometimes stuters as it downloads the actual data & information from facebook itself.
The facebook app tries to place new information at the top & then it tens to want to automatically jump to the top.
If you were connected to LTE or even a fast WiFi connection that problem would be less noticable.
But as said earlier... it's just bad coding from facebook.
Come on man, the Nexus is amazing...
It has the same amount of RAM as my work computer, & lags less.
Personally I find the Nexus 4 to be a very fast device, I wont say lag free as I can certainly see some lag but is it the fastest device out? You bet, ive played around with a very new note 2 and an s4, the N4 seems to be much faster than the Note2 and marginally faster than the s4 just pressing the home button on those two devices show about .5 seconds slower than my n4 in action.
Battery life? Hmm struggle with mine if I am honest but I get a day now, it seems I get way less than everyone else and I am not sure why but I feel i got unlucky with my device and I pray to god I have a faulty power button or something so I can RMA within the warranty to hope for a new device haha.
Its the best value phone and has pretty much the same specs as the top phones, whats not to like? And its a Nexus .
Maybe I should add that the device is also faster than the iphones/ipads I have used which shocked me as people always praised their performance... lol, the N4 is simply held back by some poorly coded applications but what can you do? Hope Developers get better

Performance problems

Hey everyone!
Just got the Galaxy S4 in my hands (i9505). Before it I had a HTC One and a iPhone 5. I don't know if everyone knows it but both devices running very smooth. You just got NO, really NO lags - never. On HTC One you got even no lags on third party apps like Chrome or Opera browser.
On your Galaxy S4 you will sadly notice more often lags. There is no browser running smoothly, no gallery showing you pictures smoothly. Just launcher and a few more third party apps are running very smoothly.
Why is that so? How can we change? Tested roms like Wanam Lite or Revolution (roms that doesn't change/add much) and also some Kernel. I never noticed a smoother performance.
Help needed - I think everyone is interested in improving the performance.

Samsung rushed the phone to launch it. It will take a few updates to make it run realy smooth, it allready improved a lot compared to the first rom it came out with. BTW Android Revolution runs realy smooth imo. Also turning off some unneeded Samsung features improves performance.
swap for I9500 LOL

Why did you ssell HTC one?

Try flashing stock android 4.3 from google edition. No lag, works perfectly.

Any 4.3 based rom should run absolutely smoothly. Unfortunately to get this you'll have to flash your device.
I'm sending this from my S4 on CM 10.2 and it's smoother than an iPhone 5 on ios7 beta!

If you type in iphone 5 lag you will get 24 million results... Galaxy S4 only 4 million...
Since i got the revisited DBT 4.2.2 MGA rom yesterday it has become much speedier and snappy imo. Its a great phone but it still needs a bit of work software wise. Overall i`am very happy with the device.

WOW golly geeeeeeez, so the iPhone is 6 times better than the S4
Lol, the S3 was absolutely useless. Laggy, does not multi-task (i9300) cracks around bezel, uses yesterday hardware (Mali 400) etc....
The i9505 is far better and essentially solved the woes that the S3 had. Perhaps a few more firmware update will do the trick.

From M8 to Note 4 not so great

Note 4 is a great phone but coming from M8 and sense seems that the Note 4 is very laggy.
Not sure if it is 805 chipset cannot handle the resolution just like G3 801 chipset couldn't handle it, but Note 4 is very laggy. Might be the bloware withing touchwiz, but loading time is slow and alot of native app (app store, facebook etc) have a hard time loading and smooth scrooling.
Yes i do have the latest update and hoping this is only software related which can be fix with an update.
This lag reporting is wierd. I've only rooted, have installed a ton of crap, froze nothing and I've had 0 lag yet.
Wonder why some are getting it

It really sucks that so many people are reporting lag, very unfortunate. I myself haven't experienced any but a lot of users are.
I'm just waiting for an AOSP rom. That should have absolutely no lag, especially with this processor.

I went from the M8 to the S5 and never experienced any lag, I wonder why the NOTE 4 would produce lag. Try factory resetting?
Absolutely zero lag. Even a before the update. But then again I don't consider an app taking 2 10ths of a second to open "lag". Lag to me is windows 98 on a 86 computer.
if you think that your phone is "laggy", then try nova launcher instead of the stock touchwiz..if its still "laggy" something is wrong with your phone, or your expectations are too high
I had lag too and downloaded seeder from playstore lag is gone for me

While I personally live AOSP roms, installing AOSP on a note device defeats the purpose of the note.

I have the LG G3 and the Note 4. The LG G3 isn't that bad, but the Note 4 is perfectly smooth. About the only thing that will lag on LG G3 is my SwiftKey. Not an issue at all on the Note 4.
With the Note 4 just being released, a lot of lag the Note 4 is being blamed for could possibly be attributed to the initial setups and synchronizing going on in the background. The phone is actually very fast.
I haven't seen any lag other then when going to recent apps, which would lag on the g3.

Change the animtion duration in developers options will boost things a little . Just depend the lag you are descibing ? I expected TW to have a little lag but its nothing that rooting and and debloating a bit cant fix .
Can someone try Google Now Launcher and see how that feels on the device? Anyone also able to compare their experience to a Nexus 5? I have the G3 and it is not nearly as smooth. Lag is not very prevalent, but it's there and noticeable for me... nothing like the Nexus 5.

Yes touchwiz is laggy in my end compare to M8 buttersmooth sense. I'm using nova which is smooth. STILL opening application and load time M8 is FASTER as of now, a lot of application stutter and lag when scrolling. If you are coming from a note 3 or LG G3 might not notice a difference, but if you are coming from a M8 or even a nexus 5 you will see and differences.
Google now Is perfect for me and my launcher of choice is Next.
I have next on max Settings and still smooth

No I got it. I am opposite and don't like Aosp too much, just imagining how fast it would be.

The only thing that has lagged for me is Swype! I may have to change to something else, I'm fed up with it! Everything else is smooth as butter. Unrooted as of yet.
Smooth as butter for me....let the initial setup do its job and check your sync settings. ..also disable auto update in playstore.....maybe that's why some have seen pseudo lag.
My Note 4 is also buttery Smooth
My n4 is as well.
