The Dilemma: 32GB vs 16GB

I just got my second 32GB TF (first one stopped responding to touch, even after hard reset) and this one has dust under the screen and light bleed...(I was a naysayer..but the problems are REAL and not just some over exaggeration).
Anyway...I'm going to return the 32GB to BHPhoto...and managed to order a 16GB from Amazon today.
I still have some time to cancel and was debating...is the 16GB the right call? I've had the 32GB until now (since it was easier to get) and it was kind of nice knowing I had that space if I ever needed it...but do I NEED it? I realize the 16GB is expandable due to MicroSD, but onboard is always better.
How do you guys feel about the storage space?

I honestly think 16gb is a better choice as you're very unlikely to install so many apps to eat up that much space.. and you can the $100 ultra to get a decent 32gb micro sd card!

I do wish you would make up your mind with your 'stories', because over on another thread you had already bought a tab 10'1 in NY and there's no mention of also ordering another AT from Amazon.
I wish people would just piss-off and stop blatantly inventing ways to post BS stories on this forum about this freaking awesome device

Please provide a link to where I said I bought a tab 10.1. Also, please make sure you get your facts right before you attack someone.

I can totally see the appeal.
However, I want that keyboard with the extended battery and I also want an SD card slot. Say what you want, but having the option to expand memory is pretty awesome.

That's not true.
If you ever want to move files from device to device all you have to do is pop out the card on one device and into another.
I would hate to wait for 16GB worth of data to be moved through USB.
The biggest files are media files so if you plan on keeping a lot of movies on your tablet at one time, then the bigger storage is probably best.
Though, the way we are headed, everything will be streamed/downloaded through cloud anyway.

Exactly my way of thinking as well. Go for the lower end and make it even BETTER than the higher ended one by getting a 32GB CLASS 6 MSD Card.

I personally bought the 16 GB because the 32 GB was sold out @ BB. I figured that I could always expand my memory via micro SD.

to me it doesn't make a ton of sense to add more onboard memory when expansion is possible, cheaper and more convenient

16GB unless you really have tons of music/movies that you want to carry with you all the time. I already have a 32gb iPhone4 so I have no reason to store my music on the tablet. 16GB more than enough.

I personally went for the 32. Unlike a phone, the microSD and SD cards are accessible. I plan to use those like floppy drives of today. It's much faster to copy media directly to the cards from a computer and stick them into the pad than to try to sync or copy them via the pad. At one point, I was thinking that I can just upgrade. However, there will always be some apps that cannot be moved to the microSD.
Also, Amazon currently has the 32 for $499 and 16 for $449. $50 difference for onboard 16 is a no brainer.

I just bought a 16gb with the same mentality as some of the previous replies. I went with the cheaper alternative knowing that I could easily upgrade the storage with a Micro SD card if I started running out of space.

Does not follow that it is better. 48 may be more then 32 but it is less then 64. You don't think that people that buy the 32 gb model are then going to say "Aw I don't need a 32 gb Micro SD card, I have more then enough internal already". No they are going to say "I wish they had 64gb Micro SD card I can put in this thing".

I see you've edited your post how errrrr predictable! but then i see you edit a lot of your posts

Given Google music, and rentable movies that either stream or delete themselves after you watch them, I think Steve Jobs is on the right track. I have WiFi 95% of the places I go. 100% of the time on work days. With the Google music beta I have no music ON my tablet, but access to my entire collection with a network connection. The 16gb tablet has room for several movies, but once netflix and android market movies are fully functional I don't see the point of even bothering to rip a DVD into a format that will play. My conclusion? 16gb saved me $50 or more over the 32gb version. That pays for netflix for 6 months or so.

Got the 16gb, and got a 32GB microsd at 90$ (patriot 32gb class 10) looks great

If you really (x10) need memory, go for the 32GB model, otherwise, the 16GB model will do just fine.

Let's think about what you accused me of (starting a post about getting a tab 10.1). Was that me? No.

I decided to keep the 16gb from Amazon. External storage is all I need. Do any of the current folio cases have pockets to hold micro SD cards?

Problem with going low and using cards is it's a pain to maintain a desktop like atmosphere if I have some on board and some on a card and swap cards for something else and need access to what was on the other card. I have a mydocs folder under mysugarsync folder and sync it with my home computer. Considering a majority of my files are media/Office based, and mt TF replaced my laptop, I have a more complete setup without having to swap cards. I also had a bunch of gift cards and paid about $300 for the 32gb after returning the 16gb one so it wasn't a tough choice. I like card access, but swapping cards more often is not really my idea of efficient. Plus the slots are always open for use. Still wish the tablet had full size SD. Hate the trend towards micro on devices that have no justification for it. Considering the TF is wider than any other 10.1 with nothing else really under the hood in comparison, a full size SD should have been a no brainer.

and why do we have no info on when they will be available? all i see is 'coming soon" on the at&t page. why bother giving us the price tag a month ago then not having them up for presale? will they even be available upon launch on at&t?

Samsung are always the same they say there are 32 and 64 models but they never ever see the light of day here in the UK

I am wondering the same thing. It's just speculation of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if the 32 and 64gb versions will only be available through Verizon in the US. So AT&T gets first launch but Verizon gets a better variety? I guess we will know soon. I guarantee there are managers at AT&T that already know, but as usual, are not saying.

yeah i got fed up and just ordered my 16gb edition on at&t.

I'm won't buy the 16gb. I want 32 or 64gb. I'm in UK and Samsung won't reveal anything. 16gb is no good as only 8.9gb is free to users. And all apps and games and app data has to go in phone memory. Not micro sd.

I don't see any reason for AT&T to skip the 32GB, they have it as coming soon. Some speculate that Samsung is pushing the 16GB out first since its more popular but I don't see why they can't get both capacities out, its a pre-order for a reason.
I am porting from Verizon to AT&T so I have to wait and I'm stuck on a crappy old flip phone while I wait. I didn't want to get stuck hold the bag on my last phone and lose the value on it. My hope is its shortly after launch, but my fear is it could be a month or two after launch. No more Verizon, so AT&T better step up.
If they have a sku for the 32GB GS4, then its clearly planned, just a timing issue.

we are all just speculating of course but if they focused all manufaturing on one model (qualcomm 16gb) then they are more likely to meet demand rather then if they fragmented at launch and possibly missed shipping on multiple models. just a WAG tho...

I spoke to sammy today and they have no info on 32gb models. As i said i just sucked it up and got the 16gb today. I have a 64gb sd card anyways.

My S2 Skyrocket has 16 GB internal memory and I have never come close to filling it. However, it all depends on how people use their phones. I don't use mine for music or movies (at this time) so my biggest storage issues are phone related (nandroids, Apps, pictures and videos, etc...) and I usually use the external SD for the pics and vids. But here is why I want the 32 GB model:
1. If I ever find myself in a situation that I need or want to take a lot of videos and pictures but don't have an extra SD card with me or a way to transfer them to another media. It would suck to run out of storage when it is really needed.
2. 32 GB might not be needed (by me) right now, but with larger and better apps, games, and similar being developed, it can't hurt. In the future it will be welcome.
3. The 32 GB model will look better than the 16 GB model when / if I ever want to sell it.
4. External SD cards crap out all of the time. Having enough onboard storage to temporarily back up important info, pics, and vids will be nice.
Of course, like I said, everybody's experience differs and some people definitely need more than 16 GB to start with.
If the 32GB isn't offered, I guess there won't be a choice.

I'm just fine with my 80GB model.

A lot of chatter, but really.... if you want it soon get the 16gb version. if 32gb is important to you, then wait. No point whining about the fact 32gb isn't available yet. 16gb will be the most popular by far, it makes sense they started there.

Thanks for your opinion but the thread is about the 32 GB version so there is no point in you calling OP related issues "whining". As stated, I (and many others) would like the 32 GB version so any information about it is certainly welcome.

I know, some people just never read the fine print. I am just sitting idle until AT&T says something.

Wheres the 64GB love? Can I get a 9500 (ex5410) + 64GB + LTE is that too much to ask?

is there any way of loading apps on the sd card? 16gb seems awful low

"Life Companion" at 16GB ..

Last i read was the 32gb will be available when the s4 is officially avail April 30th. But I would not hold my breath as it was not from a credible source. I too am waiting for the 32gb as 16gb just won't cut it.

You can't move all games on sd, only some. So, you need larger internal memory.

too true, don't understand why they even put 16gb in if they are going to cram half of it with bloatware. minimum should have been 32 to start with
but once you root it and put CM10.X on it you will have a lot more room

And to answer the original question: I think Australia will be also getting a 32gb model in the coming wks (don't take this as gospel though, it's an unconfirmed rumour as far as I'm concerned).

File binding and rooting doesn't work yet, has reliability issues and stops some apps from working.
Internal memory works better. We need bigger memory models. The 16gb should never have been sold.

Yeah, I know, but soon for and binding will be possible I think. I agree with you, or at least Samsung should release all three version on the same time for those who want to buy more space.

Unlike Apple, Samsung doesn't sell the phone directly. It gets orders from the carriers and wholesalers. The carriers no nothing about the memory and apps issues so just ordered the cheapest model as it would sell the most. But they were basing this decision on lack of technical information.
Every single mobile phone shop is lying to customers telling them apps can be moved to the sd card. I have corrected the staff but do they care to raise it higher.

Yeah, but not only. If you check websites like Amazon, even there are only 16 GB devices They will release in 4-5 months the 32 and 64 gigs, when another, more powerful smartphone with 16 gigs will be released.

32GB is already out and being sold. there was a vid on youtube, ill look for it.

Any further speculation/rumor on the 32 release (on AT&T specifically)? I spoke with a rep who said they will be getting the 32gb version, but did not know when. I spoke with a samsung customer service/marketing rep on facebook who said to contact AT&T for info. No help at all, and 16 just seems too small even with the 64gb microSD

Any news update on 32gb/64gb with LTE models? I'd rather buy an 64gb htc one than a 16gb+64microsd S4. But I like the S4 more than the One.

I am also waiting for the 32GB version, don't know when it will be available in Middle East, can't wait to get my hands on this beast.

Difference in performance between 16 & 32GB?

So I pre-ordered a 32GB white version from Best Buy. They didn't have it on the 10th so I went ahead and bought a black one to tide me over. But I'm getting impatient for my white one.
Still not in at Best Buy. I'm told that they won't be in next week either.
But they have a white 16GB. I'm seriously considering buying it along with a 64 GB micro SD card and just call it a day.
My question is, is there any performance difference between the 2 storage sizes? Or does it just affect strict storage space.

There isn't any performance differences between the two. Unlike the nand that is used in SSDs, the storage used doesn't necessarily degrade when getting filling it up.

Just storage space. I'd hang for the 32 if you can. Don't do something rash just to have it today when in a few months you'll probably wish for more space.

Han... I agree with Wing on this one... I have a 32 gig note and I'm utilizing 10 gigs of it as of today. By the way, none of which are pictures or video, or for that matter too many games. I have a 64 gig sd card that I put my movies and pictures on.
So again, I'm utilizing 10 gigs out of the 32 gig storage that I have, that's just me, but if I were you I would wait for the 32 gig version

I would just have them ship it to the store and have them call you when it gets there. That way you don't have to pay for shipping, and can take advantage of the Best Buy return policies. There wouldn't be a performance issue based on the storage size. You've waited this long for the tablet to come out, what is a couple more days to wait for shipping? Play some GTA or watch some football till then. Life doesn't seize to exist because of a tablet.

Why? The 16 will be a lot cheaper and you can just throw a 64GB card in it for less than the price difference. Unless you anticipate NEEDING 96GB of storage instead of 80 somehow, lower built-in storage + external card is always the best option.

I disagree. It's $50 difference between 16 and 32 GB. You can break it down like this; If you keep and use the tablet for 24 months, it's an extra $2 a month!
I don't like moving apps to external memory, since not all apps support this feature. When I had my 16GB S4, I was constantly removing apps to make way for new apps. I hated that..
Also, the note does not have 16GB available to the user; it's more like 10GB.

So store all your files and whatnot on the external. You'd have to have hundreds and hundreds of apps to use up the full internal just on those.
Fifty bucks. You can get a 64gb micro SD card shipped for that. Keep all your media on there, apps on the internal, and for the same price you have 2.5x the storage.
The only way I ever filled up my s3 was downloading all my rdio music onto it. How could you possibly be filling up the device from apps? I've never in my Android life had so many apps I needed to move them to the card.

Not at all. I'm saying that MOST people have no need for 96GB of storage and could save money by getting the 16 and a card of whatever size they'd like. It bugs me when people are stubbornly insisting that they NEED to spend more money on something when they don't.
Okay, so you install Vice City and five more copies of it, and that still leaves you with about a gig and a half to do whatever with. Put all your music/movies/downloads/documents/whatever on the external and bingo bango you saved money AND had more space.
What SHOULD happen in Android is that they embrace external storage and make it easier to put stuff on the external card. What happens INSTEAD is we end up reinforcing the "tiered storage size" model like Apple and next thing you know more tablets and phones have NO external storage, and it costs $100 extra just to go up 16GB in size.
I'm not arguing this just because it's the internet and I like being contrary, it's because I really do have a reason to be promoting people getting the smaller model plus microSD.

dude, you're posting on XDA, not android4newbs. Most of us are power users who want and use more space.
If 16GB works for you, then cool. If someone wants to spend $50 for another 16GB, I don't see how that would bug you.
I'm the biggest fan of removable storage - That's why I choose Samsung, but preaching to all that MOST don't need more than 16GB because YOU don't use more than 16GB is just silly.
Also $50 is relative. To me $550 vs. $600 is not that big of a deal.

You're 100% right. I was speaking more toward someone who thinks 16GB isn't enough and wants 32. If you want 32, save a couple bucks and get the card. If you need ALL the space, then yeah get the 32 and a 64 card, but unless you need 96GB why spend the extra money?
$50 is definitely relative. I mean I have the Note instead of the Nexus because even though I'm not a massive stylus user I like having the option and the extra cost wasn't enough for me to mind, but I stuck with the 16 because I -reaaaaaally- feel like for 95% of users it's a smarter buy to get less included storage and add a card.
There's an added benefit, too. Let's say I buy a 16GB model and a 64GB card. Then in a year a new model comes out. I can once AGAIN get the 16GB model and stick my card in there. So not only did I save $50+ on the current one, but I saved it on the next one. It's savings that add up, and afford me the opportunity to get new devices! :laugh:
But again, it's about getting what YOU need. I'm sure some of you guys really DO need massive storage, in which case I really look forward for the day when these bad boys can take 128's.

You're 100% right. I was speaking more toward someone who thinks 16GB isn't enough and wants 32. If you want 32, save a couple bucks and get the card. If you need ALL the space, then yeah get the 32 and a 64 card, but unless you need 96GB why spend the extra money?
$50 is definitely relative. I mean I have the Note instead of the Nexus because even though I'm not a massive stylus user I like having the option and the extra cost wasn't enough for me to mind, but I stuck with the 16 because I -reaaaaaally- feel like for 95% of users it's a smarter buy to get less included storage and add a card.
There's an added benefit, too. Let's say I buy a 16GB model and a 64GB card. Then in a year a new model comes out. I can once AGAIN get the 16GB model and stick my card in there. So not only did I save $50+ on the current one, but I saved it on the next one. It's savings that add up, and afford me the opportunity to get new devices! :laugh:
But again, it's about getting what YOU need. I'm sure some of you guys really DO need massive storage, in which case I really look forward for the day when these bad boys can take 128's.

Hmm. I still don't understand why you would think someone who buys the 32GB Note wouldn't put a MicroSD card in it as well?
Also your cost savings analogy doesn't make any sense--but i'm sure you were just joking.
Let's set aside microSD cards aside for a bit.. Anyway you split it; it's $50 bucks difference between the 16GB/32GB model. for someone like me, it's money well spent.

I had a lot more typed, but then I thought back on it and you do make a damn good point. Once you're over $500 it starts to turn kinda irrelevant, LOL. No matter how you slice it, I have NEVER been happier with a tech purchase. I actually was unsure I wanted a tablet AT ALL before I got the 2012 version of the Note 10.1, and that was awesome enough, but the new one? Sublime. 16 or 32, whatever. Buy it, enjoy. Is it perfect? Naw. Better than any other tablet I've played with? By a long shot. I used this thing side by side with the Nexus 10 and don't wish I'd gone the other way in the slightest.

I was debating on the Nexus 10 as well, as I really wanted the high resolution display on *any* new tablet.
Im so glad I sprung for the '14 model. The Samsung perks was a nice touch as well.

You made the right choice, yeah. Is it just me or does the Nexus 10 feel like a Fisher Price toy by comparison? The 2014 feels like an executive briefcase to me, the Nexus 10 is a high school backpack. I hate the rubber back on it and the rounded corners. Seriously I opened the box of the 2014 up and was just like "oooohhh god I want to hold it even when it's not on."

I sold my Nexus 10 two weeks ago to get this and I'm so glad i did. This is definitely THE tablet to get now and it's a night and day difference compared to the Nexus 10.

Too many apps just don't take advantage of SD card abilities. SNote and Evernote are perfect examples. My Lecture Notes folder on my SD card is already at 1GB. After taking the system into account the 16 you should have 10GB available before use. That's really not that much. The 32GB model only gives you 26GB to start with. And yes I also have a 64GB card.

I'm getting one tomorrow and was also debating the 16 vs 32 question. But then I was checking out local stock in my area online and most stores are only selling the 32GB version. Problem solved, lol.
I should just listen to my own advice - I always tell people it's better to have more storage than you need, rather than "just enough". And in this case, a $50 difference isn't really that much.

IMO, you probably won't see it for a while. There's no announcement on when they will release it. However, to be fair the device has expendable memory. In all likelihood you would be able to add a UHS1 (if speed is a concern) 32GB micro SD for less than paying the extra for a 32GB unit.

The card could be so fast it creates black hole, but still will not let you put apps on it. I doubt Verizon will add a 32gb version. Especially with the camera failures. Verizon is probably mentally reaming Samsung behind the scenes. Not a good scenario for adding another model anytime soon if ever.

While that's true you still have access to 9GB of the built in storage. It's hard to imagine anyone loading 9GB worth of apps on their device. Not to mention generally speaking storage space is taken up by media (photo, music, videos, etc) which removable storage is perfect for.

Imagination is relative to device use. I have a 32gb S4 and have 7gb free. Also have a 128gb card with 30gb free. MP3, video and game roms fill that up.
Factor in sd cards are now limited in function with 3rd party apps, the internal storage becomes more relevant in need.

Well said, and one persons acceptable internal storage is anthers unacceptable internal storage. You get 10.7 GB of storage and you know what its not enough for me. I had a GN3 32GB until I returned it today. Comes with 25GB of usable space, I load apps and I am down to 22.8GB of usable space. So you are thinking he only uses 2.2GB of apps, and you know what that is correct . . . for today. I could d/l a ton of larger apps, like Dead Trigger 2, MC4, NOVA3, etc, etc and quickly eat up space. I should not be required to accept a lesser storage option because an OEM and/or carrier is lazy, greedy and inefficient in managing their inventory.
AT&T will very likley offer it, and very likely well before Verizon does and if they do I am on them like stink on a skunk.

Since Verizon is the only one with the camera failure I would suspect Verizons bloatware is the cause so samsung may ne mentally reaming verizon.

Expect the 32GB to cost at least $50 more than the 16GB which is why they should just do away with the 16GB in the US, EU, Asian markets and keep the 16GB for the markets where price is a major issue.

I haven't really checked but all the games and apps I've downloaded I thought I was moving to the SD card to save space. They say they're on the SD card. I was just wondering if there were any shenanigans going on. It's my old sd card from my other phone until I upgrade to a faster one.

Not sure we will see a 32GB version. Last year around now (in relation to launch date of S4) I was told a 32GB was coming via our corporate rep (person is also a regional trainer), but this time zero information. The camera issue though has VZW spooked, so this make the rep think that issue alone could result in no new models.
I am one of the more vocal fans for 32GB and always look at the Dumb & Dumber million to one chance. Not looking as good this time around compared to the S4. Maybe when they figure out the camera issue and sales start slowing on the 16GB version they will add one. That is 110% conjecture.

Nevermind, it just creates new folders with nothing in them. Only thing sd card is good for is pictures, roms, and music. I didn't even notice at first.....

How does the that help with apps? People that want the 32gb have more apps than will fit on the 10gb free on the 16gb model. With root looking dubious or at least a real pain to achieve, the only stable solution for apps and Kitkat is to be installed in the internal storage.
If you do not have many apps, no harm no foul and enjoy the model with about 15gb less app storage. Some will not since have more than 10gb of apps that fit on the 16gb model.

Still not a peep from Verizon corporate reps, but last year we knew already by this time in the launch window. Perhaps not happening, but based on the lack of interest here, perhaps no harm no foul for folks here.
